Alternative to setting up a Linode - just tether your laptop to your phones data. Then you have an external ip and you can still use your regular terminal.
I used to do this years ago with an Alltel prepaid phone and it would assign a random ip every time, no link to a mac address, it was perfect for remote hacking/pentesting.
For those that cant install nmap when you make your server, use the command || apt-get update && apt-get upgrade || (without the pipes) first, then use the apt install nmap -y command. should work

Lots of great advice in a half hour video. As for routers not all ISPs allow you to use your own router. They will help you change your pw on your router but you still must use the router that they provide and they don't like their clients messing with the settings in the router. DD WRT is not an option for me. One might advise me to go find another ISP but I live in a very remote area in the Canadian North. I don't really have a lot of options. I only share this as I'm sure I'm not alone in this respect. What I don't do is use WiFi in my home. All devices use direct connect and that's a lot of devices so I use a lot of hardware to keep all those devices connected. I'm old enough not to use a cell and not miss it. Smart phones aren't smart enough to respect my privacy so I don't own one. If I must have mobile communication I have a laptop and Tim Hortons generally provides a good internet connection. My approach is simple and it works well for me. I pity people who feel they must remain connected to the Matrix 24/7 365 days a year. I own my network. My network does NOT own me.
Type "ipconfig /all" in windows command line to find your modem's default gateway IP address. Then log into modem, put into bridge mode and then use your own router.
Port-key, it's from Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, if I'm not mistaken the first time the term shows up it's when they're going to the Quidditch Cup, and thank you for your videos, I've been learning a lot.
Hey Chuck, you are a great instructor, you explain difficult things in a manner that is easy to understand, and you are very entertaining. A few years ago I built a home network with a Cisco Small Business router which acts as a gateway, a Cisco Small Business Layer 3 managed switch, which handles the routing and has two VLANS (one for my network and one for a guest network), and a Cisco Enterprise AP. Like you, I also have smart lights and I like your idea of putting the lights on a separate VLAN. My question is when having your phone and lights on separate VLANs, how do you control the lights with your phone if they can't talk across VLANS, or even Alexa if none of the devices on that VLAN can talk to each other? I'm also planning to switch to pfSense as a gateway firewall as my current Cisco router doesn't seem to support the use of Nord VPN to connect my entire house to the VPN. Are you still using the Dream Machine Pro or are you using pfSense? What is your current opinion between those options. Thanks Chuck!
Just started out as IT manager in new rule and this is gold for me brother, thanks so much! much appreicated any tips with presenting the ideas to the guys in charge? I use Miro
If you get ‘Unable to locate package error’ when trying to install nmap in linux, try running the update command first 'sudo apt update'. Great course, loving it.
@@Expllosaoriginal Oh okay okay I just wasn't sure if you were being sarcastic. Your public IP is actually something you don't want to be known, ironically! It would be similar to posting your mailing address where you physically live on RUclips for anyone to see. But instead of someone physically being able to come to your home, they would simply know where to go online in order to hack you and steal your information
While they said go to your friend's house and lock down their NAT router, of best interest: Only advise your friends about the flaws/issues. *Do not attempt to change their settings unless they approve, otherwise you will be breaking the law!!*
Very good kbowledge and presentation about the subject. Keep it up. Not one moment was dull. You were full of energy. The video covered the subject in a clear and concise manner. I am going to follow your networking advice.
Watching you and applying everything I've learnt from your videos has really helped me a lot I managed to secure a good job for myself after hacking the company's servers
Still, having your IoT devices connected to the Internet is a vulnerability, even with isolation, especially those with cameras and microphones. So the ideal solution is to take everything you can local, using Home Assistant or Homebridge on a Raspberry Pi or similar, use a VPN to access it from the outside (or at least use a server you control), and ideally reflashing everything you can with tested open-source firmware like Tasmota.
I scanned my home network from inside my house by using my laptop and tethering it to my mobile data network rather than spinning up a virtual machine in the cloud. Nothing against the Cloud VM idea, tethering is just what I chose to do instead. And I already had Debian installed on my laptop ;) Debian is my preferred OS. Thanks for the lesson on this Chuck, it was fun! Nmap is awesome. I use it to discover my router and switch addresses when I'm messing around wth my networking lab. Powerful tool!
very fun way of disseminating information. You should be a classroom teacher. I was hooked, kind of like in a trance, from the beginning until the end. And I now understand a lot of things better than all other videos that I've watched about the internet and protection of.
Dear Chuck, this is so entertaining so thanks a million. I will follow along with you and carry out these tests to find my vulnerabilities. I have never had a professor like you to help me with these aspects of security....., till now. Subscribed and ready to get schooled by Chucky. Fondest regards Pete
@@worlds_okayest_crossfitter so many people probably would have just been social engineered, people would have to be calling their ISP requesting new IP addresses
Home WAN IP address is dynamically assigned by ISP and changes often and esp when home user reboots/powercycles home router. Typically, ISPs charge extra money for static IP that is required for you to run some services and access your home network from outside.
He got you to buy one of those for a reason, it is really useful for server making, or making stuff, it can be a good use to anything, So before you go on about ratting this dude out, Use your actual fucking brain please, thank you.
Great video, really loved it.... But I think you forget to mention something.. Most of the times, you may have a dynamic IP address rather than a static one meaning that every time you connect to the internet, your IP will change........... So there's a chance that even if someone knew your IP, their Nmap scan will return "host not found"...... (unless u are a tech savvy guy and changed the IP to static 😜)

@mostafa ahmed :-))
This is by far the best network channel ever! Advanced topics are made so pallatable and easy to follow

Would be awesome, But I have the same job as him.
If he was your neighbor you'd have the best secured network in town. Second only to his own network. ;->
I would trust his network far more, than my current Cable ISP.
I'd try to hack him

Why not cascade a good router behind your ISP router?
@@DaylightRobberyCA 'tis a thought
You can always bridge their router into your own.
Type "ipconfig /all" in windows command line to find your modem's default gateway IP address. Then log into modem, put into bridge mode and then use your own router.
@@canadianwildlifeservice8883 This is the way.
I love your energy! You are talking about boring stuff with great enthusiasm and it makes fun to listen :)

Not a student my father died and now I have all sorts of bs happening, thanks for info I don't think I am tech savvy enough but I'm gonna try.
I will look into this tasmota thing! Thanks for sharing

Ahh, that probably explains why I'm getting a "host seems missing" error message.
I'm just tech savvy enough to be dangerous to myself.
