- kea Billy bookcase assembly is a no-hassle project; even if you hate building furniture or you have no experience at all, you can get on board with this. It's true that assembling flat-pack furniture can be an intimidating task, but this one Ikea item is foolproof. It's not a time consuming job, either. With only 12 steps (13 if you're mounting it to your wall which is highly recommended), Billy bookcase will be ready within an hour.
If you're in the market for a bookshelf which is modern, affordable and easy to build, Ikea Billy is the model you shoud go for. Billy doesn't look like a cheap piece of furniture at all, it's easily customisable and used in many more ways than just for books.
Billy bookshelf is available in many different sizes and for some models even 4 colours, which means you're sure to find the perfect piece for your needs.
For safety, please attach tall furniture to the wall, particurely if you have small children at home.

Im stummped. I have this in black and im confused about the skinny peice at the bottom. Basically the toe kick. For me, one side is black and the other is wood colored, mean for the back of the bookshelf.
Now the problem is, if the black part is facing outward as if youre viewing the cabinet from the front the two pegs are towards the left (you can see in this demo the two pegs on each end are skewed to one sode and there's an extra inch of board to the right.
Basically, if the black is showing forward the pegs are on the wrong aide and there is a gap between the toe kick and the bottom shelf. Can someone help?

great video, do you know if the background panel is necessary? can I avoid mounting it?
You can but shouldn't do it because the bookshelf won't be stable. You have to attach it to the wall straigh away. Without the back, you also can't put the recommended weight on the shelves, the load has to be much lighter.
How did you connect both the units?, did you get that screw in the packet to connect the units together or did you had to buy them separately?

I’ve assembled it all I just have the actual shelves to put in but the manual mention about using brackets to drill into the wall in case it falls over did you do this? Or leave it free standing?
I left it freestanding. It is safer to attach. Especially when there are children or cats at home.
Hey! Really helpful for me to visualize the quality of the build. But I have a question, the one I'm interested to get is half the height of the bookcase you've shown here.
Would it be fine to leave it standing free? It's in my room and I have no pets or children so not much concern really.
I don't think you need to attach it to the wall.
3:46 After I marked the centre on mine, and eventually got the back on (not easy when the room is not much longer than the height of the bookcase), I didn't need to measure from corner to corner since I also just drew a centre line. Also, you can feel where the centre is as well, so that's fairly straight-forward.
However, the back panel didn't sit quite flush with mine. It was fully in, but slightly skewed at an angle top AND bottom, as if it had been cut badly. This is the problem with mass production. I got the nails in but it should've been a bit longer because it could come free from one or two of them, if pressure was put on. If they made it a bit longer so it overhung slightly below the bottom shelf, that would give you a bit of play with it.
I'd best not say how long mine too me :-D
Have you managed to finish your projects :) It's not always straitforward and the pieces sometimes are not ideal. As for the size of the rooms, I know exactly what you mean... :).

@@k-nemo I didn't get notified of your reply at the time, but I did do that, and then bought two more last January. There was damage on one, but I got a partial refund, as it's liveable with. For some other items, they had to go back because they looked like they'd been thrown about the warehouse..
Its so difficult to get the back cover slide into place 😢

Are all the holes suppose to be align to where you have a lot of flexibility of how much distance you want the shelves or are there only certain spots you can place the shelves? Not all the holes are align on mine is it defective?

It is a good practice but if you don't have small children at home is up to you.

ma i 28 cm di profondità partono dal fondo della libreria chiusa o è la lunghezza del lato esterno? devo metterci dei quadernoni ad anelli che sono lunghi 27 cm e ho paura che non ci stiano
28 cm è lo spessore del rack esterno.
I taccuini da 27 cm sporgeranno leggermente dagli scaffali.
Non posso misurare per te perché non ce l'ho a casa

Can you explain the diagonal measurements more? Can't you just eyeball it and see if it lines up?
You won't see if it's perfectly straight if you just look at this. Both diagonals have to be the same. length. It's the easiest way to check if the furniture is rectangular.

I don't understand how to fold the back
I compared the diagonals to make sure the bookshelf is rectangular, and then I nailed it. You don't have to compare the diagonals if you don't won't the shape to be ideal. You put the nails in one of the shelves, you have to mark whre it is before you add the back 3:13

Can I ask you something? I need another level, therefore I want an extra shelf, but I am not sure if the screws (the thing we put in the holes, sorry for my lack of vocabulary 🥲) are included. Do I also have to buy them? I couldn’t find any information about this on the IKEA website.
In my opinion, the pins come with the shelf.
