In this video I am sharing how I added a height extension unit to a short IKEA Billy Bookcase to get exactly the size I wanted for my built-in bookcases.

I've just bought a small Billy bookcase and the height extension unit to do exactly what you've done. This is just the info I need to add the height extension without having to resort to using joining plates. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thank you SO much for this. I found myself in the same predicament with the shorter bookcase and the extension. I had no clue what to until I found this video.
Thank you thank you thank you!
This is the info that I've been looking for which is not listed on any IKEA page. Thanks for the feedback!
Just followed this on two of my shelves. Thank you! 😍
Thank you for the tutorial! This was exactly what I was looking for! I’m working with some height restrictions & wanted to add that extension unit, but wasn’t sure if I could. Glad to know it’s not hard to do. 😄
I'll say it again Deborah, you are amazing on the tools...and the result was nothing short of amazing. I hope you are well and not melting away with your heat...you'll need to send me some sunshine Down Under xx
Thank you! That was exactly what I was looking for.
Exactly what i am looking for. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the tips. It's my case exactly. Cheers
You are a lifesaver, thank you so much!
Thanks for this! Was planning on doing the exact same thing, but was still wondering how to make holes that aligned with the cam screws perfectly. This answered my question.
Exactly what I needed to solve my issue, which is by the way something that Ikea should modify ! Thanks a lot 🙂
You're very clever Debbie x
Looks great
thanks for sharing this, this is my next project :)
Thank you for this!!! I have a short billy as well, but it's on the floor, therefore those 4 grey screwy things on the extension would be very visible at the top. Can't I just flip the top and screw those grey things in from the bottom? It looks like it's symmetrical on all sides.
I think you probably could as long as it all lines up. Good luck!
Hello! Could you please share the drill bit sizes? I know you said small & #6, but I wasn’t sure if that’s the technical size term?
Hi there, I understand a UK size 6 drill bit is 0.204 inches or 5.18mm. Does that help?
@@LivinganOrganisedLife thank you so much!! I’m having someone else help me add my extension unit on, but this definitely should help give us a starting point if those measurements don’t convert for us for some reason.
@@LivinganOrganisedLife Just wanted to say thank you again for this tutorial! I worked with a friend and added on my extension unit over the weekend. It looks great and was so easy to put together. I’m excited to start filling up my bookcase again! 😄
Is it safe to use a cordless drill on the screws? I would have thought the 'wood' would be to fragile to use a cordless drill/screwdriver.
I think it’s fine as long as you drill slowly. Hope it works out well for you 😊
How far did you have to drill in? Trying to do this on my own but it's a struggle
I only drilled it a short way, probably only half a centimetre so I could get the fixing hole in the right place. The screw will then find it’s right depth when you screw it in. Good luck 😉
God I should’ve stayed in school to learn how to measure
What if the ceiling is too low so you don't have enough space for those top cam screws?
Could you use a couple of L braces (corner brackets) on the inside? And paint them the same colour as the shelves? You probably wouldn’t see them easily ☺️
I actually did this but it's very wobbly, not the perfect solution. Thanks for the answer! 🙋♀@@LivinganOrganisedLife
@anaesterhazy631 mmm, maybe add some more brackets or larger fixing plates? If you have the tools you could secure it with pocket hole screws and fill them afterwards?
@@LivinganOrganisedLifeThank you, but you are overestimating my skills largely! No way I could do the pocket holes!
I also find it scary to mount those boxes up on a ladder, I was afraid I am going to break myself and Billy!
😂 I think I’d add an angled plate covering most of the length, that would have to hold it! I’m sure you can do it!
