I hope this helps! It's really easy to assemble.
Thank you so much!!! I have been debating whether these would be more trouble than they are worth, but you made it much less frightening!!
@@marymorris9780 The Billy bookcases are the easiest furniture assembly I've ever done! Definitely go for it! 🤩
Hi Karen! Thanks so very much for this assembly video! This was super helpful! 😊 Sadly, I must’ve somehow skipped over the step at 1:58 and forgot to put in that last screw that you mentioned helps keep the back panel positioned. 😱 Do you think that will give me any problems? I’ve attached the extension units and have moved the bookshelf units with them attached and haven’t noticed the back panels shifting at all. It’s a bit late as I’ve attached them to the wall already. 😩 Do you think I should be worried about the structure? I’d really appreciate your opinion. 🙏 I realized when I saw the extra screw. 😬 Thanks so much for your time!
@@Singyourheartout324 No, don't stress at all! I doubt it will be any problem, especially being way up on the top shelf. Definitely not worth undoing all your work now they are in position. 👍
@@AthomewithKarenThanks so much for this quick reply! I really appreciate it! I was so worried, so this really puts me at ease. ❤️😂 Have a wonderful rest of your day! 😊
I love the effort you put in making of this video. You help a lot of people. I hope you and family be well Karen

Good video Karen! As soon as IKEA gets the Billy cases back in stock I plan to get a few, including the height extension.
Thank you Reggie! You'll love the Billy. It all fits together so easy and looks great.
Brilliant! Thank you!

Great video!
Thank you! I hope it helped. 😁
Looks so easy to do it, but my attempt would not go as smoothly as yours😁
Great video💥👏
I guarantee you could do it. Easiest thing I've ever assembled. 👍
👍
Thank you!
Thank you - very helpful video - we would need to take 3 cms of the height - if you did this does anyone know if there is the space to do this away from the already drilled holes?
If you trim off some height you will lose the pre drilled holes, but you could buy some small angled brackets and screw the extension to the top of the bookcase. It would be secure and it wouldn't be visible. That's what I would do.
Do you think the 31 1/2 wide extension can be placed on two 15 3/4 billy bookcases?
Yes, Rick, I think that would work. As long as the two narrow bookcases were screwed together tight, the fittings for the extension should slot into the top of the bookcases without a problem. And I think that would look great! The Billy is made to all be matched together. This is the link to the instruction book. It might help. ruclips.net/video/Bl1eeUPnlVo/видео.html
Thank you so much! I was wondering how hard it would be to install, I didn't want to remove my books to add the extension.
It's super easy. It just sits on top! Glad I could help. Thank you for the feedback.
@@AthomewithKaren Going to Ikea this week to get 5 new extensions!
@@lincyayala3482 oh that's going to look great!
Hi I am currently thinking about installing these bookcases, but I am no pro at this. If the bookcase is ceiling height, how should I go about attaching it to the wall?
Good question Toni, and I pondered this for a while before I came up with a solution.
One way, would be to attached the Billy to the wall as per instructions, and fit the height extension after it is place.
Or (and this is what I had to do) - Instead of screwing the bracket to the top on the outside of the bookcase, I screwed it to the under side of the fixed middle shelf, inside the bookcase. The bit that you screw into the wall sits against the back panel of the bookcase and you screw through that panel, into the wall. Make sure it goes into the wall stud not just the plaster!
Watch lots of videos, take your time, and plan each step and you'll be ok.
Good video! I have a question please... is the wall bracket attached to the top of the main bookcase or to the top of the extension unit?
Hi Syl, you attach the wall bracket wherever suits you and your wall. As long as it fixes securely into the wall to prevent the bookcase falling over. Attaching it to the main bookcase would be stronger.
@@AthomewithKaren Okay - thank you for the prompt response! x
@@sylpisces thankyou for the lovely feedback. 😊
THANK YOU! This is going to make it less intimidating to put together =)
I'm glad it helped. 😊
@@AthomewithKaren just finished putting it together =)
@@princepeterwolf that's great! Was it easy?
@@AthomewithKaren It was, much more than I had anticipated. If it hadn't been for your video I'd probably not have done it right away, so thank you for that :)
@@princepeterwolf now you can fill it with your favourite things. Well done!
Very nice work. But how are you going to get it out into another room now?
They are staying in that room. The bookcases are screwed to the wall, I ran skirting board all around the bottom, and the carpet went in around them. Permanent built-in bookcases. I'm really pleased with the result!
Is there any gap at the rear bottom of the height extension unit to allow for the earthquake fasteners? I already added those and now I want to add the height extension part
Hi Josh, yes there is a gap. The sides of the extension sit flush on top of the bookcase but there is a gap all the way across the back to accommodate the brackets.
what i am wondering about is you are suppose to anchor the bookcase to the wall. but if i put the anchors on top of the Billy bookcase, then how do i add the extension on top of that.
The units are designed so there is a gap, the full width of the unit, between the top of the bookcase and the bottom of the extension. This allows room for the brackets that are supplied to use to attached the bookcase to the wall.
Can you add multiple extension shelves on the same bookcase or only one?
Hi Briana, both the bookcase and the extension have predrilled holes to suit the cam lock that joins them together. There is no provision to add another extension. BUT I don't see why you couldn't use small brackets and screws etc to add another extension. I'd definitely screw it to the wall though, so it doesn't topple over.
Hi Karen, I want to add an extension unit to a half height Billy bookcase but it doesn't have the holes for the small cam screws pre-drilled. Do you have any suggestions on drilling them? I'm guessing that the holes IKEA pre-drills are just blank holes and the cam screws are self tapping so it's just a question of drilling a suitable size. If you think it's doable what drill bit size would you use?
I think that would work. I'd get the extension unit and use those holes as a guide for size and depth. You can take the screws with you to the store to get the right size drill bit. Good luck! It'll look great!
@@AthomewithKaren Thanks Karen that's what I was thinking. I live in an ancient cottage with very very low ceilings so this should be a solution to my bookcase problems. Fingers crossed.
Do you know if you can put two extensions on top of each other?
There are no pre-drilled holes for this but, if you're handy with a screwdriver and some brackets, you could certainly add another extension on top.
Is it possibile to put more then only one top element up?
The shelves aren't designed for that. There are no pre drilled holes etc. It could be dine but you would need to find a way to securely attach extra units.
What if the ceiling is too low so you cannot put in the top cam screws?
The top cam screws go in the top of the bookcase, not the top of the extension. But if you can't lift the extension up over those screws, you could leave them out, slide the extension on to the top, and screw in a few L-shape brackets to fix the extension to the top of the bookcase.
Thank you@@AthomewithKaren
Was the height extension larger. Billy bookcase is 31.5 inches height extension is 32 inches
The height extension is the exact same width and depth as the bookcase. It sits perfectly on tbe top. You can't even tell it's an extension.
@@AthomewithKaren the dimensions are what I read you from the ikea website. Can you please conduct this
@@Ai_TheGreat I don't know what to tell you. The height extension is designed to sit flush on top of the bookcase. They are the same size. Perhaps you should contact Ikea and ask them to clear up the confusion.
@@AthomewithKaren thank you for responding
@@Ai_TheGreat I'm sorry I couldn't help. It's very strange. I hope you solve the puzzle.
Whats the maximum weight for it ?
Hi Ramon, I have found the Billy bookcases to be quite solid and sturdy. I only have books in my bookcase so I haven't thought about its weight capacity and there wasn't anything mentioned in the assembly instructions, either. Maybe you could have a look on the Ikea website? Or send Ikea an email?
Embarrassed to state and speaking for myself, but this would be much better for the hapless and relatively helpless with the addition of CLOSE-UPs so that you can see which hardware goes where. The speeded-up pace of the video didn't help me either.
Hey Kenzo, thank you for the feedback. I'll remember those points if I ever do any more assembly videos.
