As of now the Ikea Billy is $99 , Target is $35 and walmart is $36.88. They all look so similar, I am glad I found your video. I wish Ikea had the white one in stock for $49

Thanks. I don't think you mentioned weight load per shelf. I think the Ikea shelf holds up to 66lbs as opposed to 30lbs for the target shelf. This may not matter to most, but it will to me since I'll have a large number of textbooks, which tend to be heavier.

Need extra shelves for Target or Walmart bookcases.... head over to Home Depot or Lowes and buy Rubbermaid melamine shelf. They will cut to size. Be sure to measure your shelf or take with you. About 20.00 for a 6 foot shelf. Buy additional shelf anchors 4.00. I just did the research. Or make shelves from all that cardboard we are recycling.
I used to own 10 IKEA Billy bookcases with the bookcase toppers in oak. I bought them when ikea first opened in the US. They served me well for over 15 years. Then I down sized. Now I'm in a micro studio. I miss my books

This was an amazing video!!! I was expecting an Ikea bookshelf comparison but I was pleasantly surprised to hear Wal-Mart and target have bookshelves!!! I have the Ikea kallax bookshelf and I never see anyone else with them! But hey this was a really inclusive comparison! Loved the video :D
Also I live in Canada so we don't have target and our Wal-Mart's are different, but I've never had to look to Wal-Mart for a shelf since my kallax shelf does it all :D it weighs SO MUCH tho omg

    Lovin your eyeshadow
My nearest ikea is also like 2 hours away. And it's brand new, so before last year it was like 5 hours away.
I have the walmart white ones
I owned three black ones from walmart for years (10, 4, 3). The shelves did sag a bit, but they held up on my end. And I moved across the country a few times! I couldn't see spending extra on more expensive shelves. Lol.
This was really really interesting and I'd love it!

I finally took the leap in 2021 and built my own shelf on the wall. This cost me about 100 dollars for 6 shelves at 36 inches wide. However, i want to do another section in the future. I have just been burned by so many bookshelves! I know not every one can just build onto their wall, but if you can, you should do it!

    Great vid....
I got the Walmart one about 3 years ago..$30
Just pick another onw up a couple days ago..it was $36 and to my suprise it was not as wide as the OG one..but the same height..so there getting cheap on us...but it might help out as i loaded sone shelves on the OG one to much, and the shelves bow down a bit..

Lol! Fun to compare. I've had 7 of the Walmart tall 5 shelf ones for 15 years now. Still in good condition, survived one move... filled with combo of books, movies, etc. I will say I bought a Walmart small 3 shelf a couple years back for my sewing space...not the same quality as my others. Just another thing to think about...if plan on adding more later and want things to match your best bet is IKEA.

Thank you for making this video. I just started getting a few bookshelf I'm tired of storing in totes since now I got my own little hobbit hole. I'm glad I stumbled on this video before buying. I love Ikea but with my budget it is very tight. Thank you again for comparing. Have a nice day.

I'd be interested in an update on shelf sag, also two years on the prices are way different, it's now $90 for a billy in white, and targets white ones are $50 I don't know about Walmart didn't check.

I really like this idea. I don't need shelves because I have built in bookshelves where I live so I've never even looked at them in stores lol but it's great for future reference. Walmart is just awful in general lol so I'm not surprised their original price is the same as Billy. I love how everyone is like IKEA is cheap and I'm just sitting over here broke lmao. This was a cool video!

The one thing I don’t like about the Target shelf is how uneven the shelf heights have to be because of the way it’s constructed. The bottom two shelves are super high compared to the three at the top half (since there’s that unmovable part exactly in the middle and you can’t evenly space the shelves).

    • @TheRealJameson505
      @TheRealJameson505 3 года назад

That's what I'm dealing with. IKEA is to far away and I am gonna try the Walmart one to see if it can be evenly spaced

is it possible to add in shelves within the Target bookcase? I know with the ikea one it's possible so I'm trying to figure out before I pull the trigger on the ikea one

Target and Walmart do not carry extra shelves. But hey I got you. Head over to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a Rubbermaid melamine shelf. They will cut for you. It's about 20.00 for a 6 foot board. You'll get 3 23in cuts with some left over. Buy shelf anchors for about 4.00

I never appreciated ikea more than now when you can't buy anything because they're out of everything! Went to the West Sacramento store no bookshelves- nothing -no couches. The closest that they had any bookshelves was in Burbank California. I don't know if they're sitting on a ship waiting to come to learn or if they haven't been built or what's going on but I can't wait until they're back.. There's just no other shelves that you can customize like the ikea shelves When I'm trying to buy bookshelvesonline can't find anything close to ikea prices.

Ikea bookshelves are too deep for most books so there's a lot of wasted space. I prefer buying CD/DVD storage units for my books.

Wow, back in the mid-2000 aughts, here in Iowa, when I was looking for book shelves from Target or Walmart, one could not find ANY bookcase shelving units under about $200, and what's worse is they were made from VERY cheap plywood (there wasn't anything sturdy about them) and they were all ONLY about 3-feet high. Heck, I couldn't find any stores, despite years of searching, who would even sell a taller shelving unit that reached anywhere above 3 feet...not even around back-to-school time, which really shocked me.
