    This looks fantastic! I used 3 tall Billy bookcases to make a floor to ceiling for my office/ library and LOVED that room. I put them on top of wall kitchen cabinets that I raised off the floor and I could hide things like office supplies, paper, printer stuff, etc. Sadly I had to sell it in my divorce 😢

    This is lovely! I want to do something similar but don't have any power tool. I always see a base support being built for the bottom and the sides. Can you please help me understand the reason? Are they for the weigh or to level out the book cases or both? If the wall is only 100" wide on level floor and I only add the extension to the book cases, are they necessary? Thank you.

      Hi! Thanks! So the base support on the bottom is to lift the bookcase up so the baseboard can be put under it. Plus it helps support the weight from the shelves and books. The extensions are also to support the weight and to screw the bookcases into so they won't fall over. They're also to use up the extra space since the bookcases didn't perfectly fill the wall. I explain more in detail on the blog post too athomewithashley.com/ikea-billy-bookcase-hack-library/

      @@AtHomewithAshley if to try this, would you actually need a base? I don’t need to add height nor for baseboard. I get the side supports but can’t you anchor it to wall itself

    very impressive build! how tall was the ceiling in that room?

    Awesome project and detailed instructions! I am building a very similar one except only one 14" height extension shelf over the top support. Did the side supports get screwed into studs as well? Usually studs arent that close together. 4:14

    Hi! I want to do some similar, but with wheels in order to use it as a mobile room divider. Do you think is possible?

      I would be afraid with the weight of the books, that it wouldn't be very stable

      Not true. I’ve had my Billy bookcases for over 20 years and haven’t observed any bowing even on shelves that have nothing but books.

      How do you actually find anything? "You have any historical fiction?" "Oh yeah, we've got 2 pink, 6 blue, 4 red, 1 yellow, 7 black, and 1 mauve".

    The project is very cool and useful, but sorting the books by color matches on buying them by weight. 🤦‍♂️

    • @AtHomewithAshley
      @AtHomewithAshley  Месяц назад

      Thank you. Our brains probably work different. I didn't buy them by weight. But I remember my books by the color of the cover so that's how I organize them. Plus I like how they look. I respect that you probably remember books in a more conventional way.
