  • Driving anxiety, or vehophobia, can be so limiting. If you are going through driving anxiety treatment you may feel like you are stuck, and not getting any better.
    How to deal with driving anxiety starts with understanding your fears. Followed by slow and steady actions towards your feared situations. So you drive in progressively difficult scenarios according to your individual fears.
    During driving anxiety treatment it can sometimes feel like you are not improving.
    If so, this motivational video is for you. Overcoming driving fear takes a lot of commitment but you can do it, just don't give up!
    Driving phobia is a very disruptive problem that can lead to family issues, loss of confidence, limited independence as well as the horrible symptoms of anxiety. So it is well worth the time and effort to push through those fears and keep going.
    Here I explain how the three P's will help you keep going as you are learning how to overcome driving anxiety. Patience, progression and practice.
    Let me know if this video helps you.

      I love hearing that you are taking action. You can absolutely do this - and just like any skill - break it down into steps and make sure you keep at it, a little at a time. Taking action, no matter how small it seems, is what will eventually take that fear away. Keep up with the good work!

I even think maybe its not for me, beause it took my little sister 2weeks to drive without fear and my husband dont understand why am i taking so long.

      Hey, we all have good days and bad days. Do whatever you can to make yourself feel comfortable about driving and take your time. If you feel too anxious one day, ease off and try again another day when you feel more strong. Don't compare yourselves to others, we're all on our own path (or road)!

    I just found your videos. I just made the decision I would conquer my huge one ( LA DRIVING) immediately but I think I’m gonna go a little slower. I have noticed these fears came up on me after o had my last son. No real thing has happened but o have a wonderful husband who does all the driving. I think that has allowed the fear to grow cause I don’t “have too”. I started to realize a few months ago that it is taking a tole on me in the sense that I say no to things that are far and I have to drive. Freeway driving and going downhill is so my specific issues. “Loosing control” what I have learned helps is getting on the slow lane and getting behind a big truck helps me so much.

    • @GenerationCalm
      @GenerationCalm  2 года назад

      I'm impressed with your thinking on this. Practicing little and often will probably be best for you. So plan out some routes where you'll feel more confident (no hills or freeways), and go out when the traffic is quiet enough for you and decide if your prefer to have a passenger with you or not (some people prefer company and others find it off-putting). Good luck!

      @@GenerationCalm Just wanted to let you know that I followed your advice in taking one step at the time. I've never liked driving, I've been completely terrified of driving my whole life. We've lived in a small town where I didn't need to drive, but when that was necessary I've always relied on others. I have three kids, you can only imagine the guilt I felt. Last summer I took additional driving lessons which went really good, but then again my phobia resurfaced. Two months ago we moved to another country, we live in a big city where driving is a necessity. The horror! To make things worst, people drive here on the left side of the road, which confuses me even more. I summoned all the courage I have in me and started driving, then I completely froze. In Cyprus (where we live now), drivers are very aggressive and reckless which made me even more anxious. I had to stop my car on the the side of the road and let my husband take over. I swore I'll never drive again. I felt terrible, just awful. I have two daughters and I just want to be a good role-model to them. I wrote down what my fears are about driving and realised that it's the other drivers I am afraid of. So, I guess it's about control. I don't know. So, I just took one step at a time. I drove my son to his Nursery school which is like a 5 minute drive from home. Then I drove my older daughter to school, 15 minute drive,. I drove around the neighbourhood just trying to lower my anxiety. I went to the supermarket, but I parked a bit further. Nevertheless, it felt good. While driving my heart beats so fast, I sweat and feel absolutely terrified, but I know my limits, so I am not pushing it. My husband puts a lot of pressure on me, but I explained to him that I need to do this my way. It will take time and I'm completely OK with it. My greatest fear are roundabouts and highways, but I know I'll get there soon. I wanted to thank you once again. Your videos inspired me and gave me the tools I needed to get started. Thank you!

      Oh my Goodness, you have done amazing! Even though there have been (and probably still will be) hurdles, you have kept going......and slowly. Having a goal in mind, like being a role model for your daughters, is what will keep you going when others give up. I love that you are examining your thoughts about the fears. Not being able to predict the driving behaviors of others is a biggie, especially when you're in a country that has a more aggressive driving style. Maybe you can go even further with that and think about how you would cope if "a driver suddenly swerved in front of you" or something similar that worries you. You'll soon see that you would cope better than you know. Good luck, keep going and continue progressing slowly. Slow progression is always better. And when you add in the stress of moving countries it's good to be kind to yourself. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Not only does it put a smile on my face, but it gives other people hope too!

    Great videos about driving anxiety. My biggest issue at the moment is that I am driving someone else’s car and you can see the nervousness in them and the reverse anxiety (if that’s a thing LOL) so I am doubly anxious myself. Nightmare…

My fear and anxiety kept growing, and the reason being my mind kept thinking what if I hit someone/ pedestrian? I am a safe driver and never ever will to hurt someone. It affects me so badly that my face started losing fat, I got shivering on my face because of this reason. I need your help to overcome this.

      You can work your way up to gradually faster roads in your own time. And then, when you do, stay on it for long enough that you feel the fear starting to subside. What I mean is, don't go on a freeway for just one mile and get off at the next exit. Stay on it for about 20 miles. It allows for your fear to start leveling out.

      I understand how frustrating it is when test nerves get in the way. But you can do this. Why do I know? Because your first statement was "I can drive'. That's 3 powerful words right there. You can drive..you just need to take the pressure off yourself when it's time for the test. Feeling nerves during a test situation is completely normal - don't know about you - but I normally feel it in my belly. Maybe you could practice a bit more with someone watching you (even with a clipboard so they act like the real tester), so you get used to that feeling of being watched. Good luck!
