DRIVING PHOBIA treatment in 6 steps

- You can overcome fear of driving and this video details driving phobia treatment. Having a driving anxiety can restrict your life, so it's important to face your fear so that you can start living life without limitations.
Having a driving anxiety can range from the specific fear of driving on highways/ bridges/ tunnels to avoiding driving altogether.
The basic premise of driving phobia treatment is to drive as often as possible. But, of course, if you try to do this quickly, and jump in at the deep end, it will scare you even more. So, it's important to take it step-by-step and take your time working up to your ultimate goal. There is no rush in increasing your driving confidence.
There are many psychological aspects to reducing your driving anxiety. This video concentrates on behaviors, thoughts and feelings and what you can do to help yourself be successful before and during being out on the road.
If you have driving anxiety goals, here are the tips I discuss in the video:
1. Set an intention for every drive
2. Learn to breathe more slowly and consciously
3. Prepare yourself for success like a performance
4. With self-awareness, you are in control of your emotions
5. If you feel panicky in the car, pull over when it's safe to do so, but try to stay in the car
6. Be kind to yourself, even if you have a setback
Driving anxiety, or vehophobia is common, but is absolutely possible to overcome on your own. You can do this. Picture your goal, prepare for it, then act on it.
Driving phobia treatment is possible. It will require patience, practice and gradual progression.

🚙DRIVING ANXIETY SURVEY 🚙
Friends, I need your help! If you have experienced driving anxiety, I would be so grateful if you could you please spare 10 minutes to fill in my questionnaire forms.gle/i7koDwEGaYy5vmox5 .
You may have seen my driving anxiety video's on RUclips and now I am writing a book to help people overcome driving anxiety. I am interested in collecting a broad range of views from people with driving anxiety to make sure the book is of benefit to as many people as possible.
Note: Everything you share will be strictly confidential, and will only be used as general research for my book, to understand the experiences and patterns of behavior among anxious drivers of all levels.
Thank you so much.
Clare from Generation Calm
Goodevening I find your videos to be highly beneficial I am and have been a very good driver but I must mention that for the past one year I have suffered with this problem... But with the help of your videos I am set for recovery......
I’d be interested in reading it when it’s finished, I’ve taken several great strides in driving the freeway the last six years or so, but still have some challenges with bridges, windy mountain roads or freeway driving for more than an hour or two
THIS IS A VERY HUGE THING FOR ME CURRENTLY!!!!
I feel really sad for other people who are going through the same anxiety as me, but it’s also comforting to know that I’m not alone in this. I wish I knew other people my age who are also struggling. I’m 25
I definitely get how you feel my fear is not driving in general just feels like I’m about to pass out while driving
I'm 25 too and today I drove alone for the first time. It took about 10 minutes and people were honking me and I couldn't park and I cams back home sobbing and feeling so bad about myself
@@kerennoyman1988 I'm 25 could drive but I'm rusty one of the reason I feel I'm not good enough for a relationship (I'm a guy)
I'm 27 and I'm suffering 😥
I am almost 30 . facing this stupid phobia for last 2 years only... Now its not feeling like driving its like escaping through bridges and bypass road or hilly roads really fed up of this
If someone as calm as her was sitting next to me while driving, I’d be cured!
Thank you!
Totally agree
Facts bro !
I'm 25 years old and I am fearful of driving. Although I have my license, I haven't driven by myself for more than 5-10 minutes, and this was just a basic drive around my neighborhood.
I feel like a burden whenever I ask for a ride from my family members or boyfriend. I so desperately want to be an independent driver, but I am afraid of driving alone.
I love that you say you desperately want to become an independent driver (there's fire and motivation in those words). If you have access to a car, start by doing some very short drives around a quiet neighborhood. Plan out a route beforehand so you feel confident. And decide beforehand whether you would like a (calm) companion in the car with you. You can do this! But take it slow ... and don't compare yourself to other drivers.
Generation Calm I greatly appreciate your words of advice, and your videos on the topic. They have both assisted in stirring some much needed confidence in driving, so thank you! 🌹
Omg I am so the same! I had my license taken 2 years ago and then I was living abroad so I never really practised it. Came back home , my parents bought me a car and Ive been with my dad a few times but he is shouting on me so much that makes me even more stressed. I know how to drive (obvs not very experienced) but I am so terrified to do it by myself and I feel that I am all the time depending on someone. Couldnt relate more to your story. 😔😔
@@christianamitropoulou454 When you learn something shouting makes you more nervous. So it is better to be calm and cool to learn. When I went to learn driving instructor used to fight with me, I couldn't learn anything and left that place.
@@aps7802 thank you for your answer! I agree 100% with you. I am no longer driving with anyone instead I take my time and I am driving alone now. I must say I feel so much better now and more proud of myself :)
I want to overcome this fear, because I'm tired of not being able to live my life the way I should. It's embarrassing I'm 35 and haven't been behind a wheel since I was in my early 20's. I'm also tired of the endless jokes, mainly from family members. Getting my license is a huge deal for me, once I accomplish this I will feel a weight lifted off my shoulders.
You can overcome this fear Natavia. But do it in your own time, for your own reasons. This is all about you and the sense of achievement you'll feel once you start driving again! So start small, but dream big ... you got this!
in the same boat as you. I am desperate to overcome this fear :( every time I get behind the wheel, my hands are shaking. But family and friends don't get this and I am forever a laughing stock for having this phobia!
I'm 41 and don't have my DL. I took the test and failed. I've already had a panic attack driving and that was like being on a rollercoaster with no safety bar.
I'm your generation. The weird thing is, in my early 20's I LOVED driving and wouldn't give it a second thought. I wish I could be like that again.
You and me both,we are at same age ,I get mad anxiety as soon as i think of making mistakes or bumping the car.
I think the most embarrassing thing is having a car and a license and this irrational feeling that you'll never drive again because you're too scared.
Fears often are embarrassing, but there’s something about driving anxiety that seems even more so. Although you might not see yourself driving yet, allow yourself to imagine where you might like to drive to.
I'm in the same position! Own a car and have a licence, which makes me feel like an imposter. It's almost like there's even more internal pressure to go out driving, because in theory nothing is holding me back.
@@gabrielekavaliauskaite589 You can drive though, it's been approved, try and remember that.
I would try doing small journeys on basic roads without having to worry about roundabouts or lane changes, learn where the lights are so you know when to stop. Once it becomes second nature be a bit more adventurous.
I've only had 5 lessons and I'm struggling a bit with nerves, but you have your license which is really good.
I'm so afraid of driving, I don't even have a learner's permit. Whenever I even picture myself in a car, I immediately feel anxiety. My breathing races, my palms sweat, my heart races. I'm almost 40, and it's been holding me back. It's a huge hurdle for me that I can't seem to overcome.
Start small...just start with your motivation. Think about why you want this so bad. What would driving open up for you in your life? You don't have to answer that question here, but start to think about these questions. Because at some point you will find the benefits of driving will outweigh your fears. So get ready for it!
You need a really good instructor...I felt safe with my instructor, but today, attempting to drive a car nearly 5 months later {lockdown} in a much older car, I had to look down at the gears, and my son said 'That's so dangerous,{empty road} get out now!'' and my confidence was in tatters.
The gears in the old car and the clutch and the seat all felt so alien!.......I wonder if I ought to buy an automatic? I was so used to my instructor's lovely Mini.{Manual}
OMG... I'm in the same boat! I'm a little older than you, but same issues. This problem has been holding me back, too.. for years.
same :(

I’ve recently passed and I’m absolutely terrified of driving when it’s busy, I’m such a people pleaser and the thought of annoying people/bumping into their car/looking like an idiot makes me absolutely shake, it’s not motorway driving that makes me anxious, it’s small skinny streets!! I really hope I get over it with practice x
Same here you won't believe.
YESSS ME TOO. Whenever there’s a car behind me
I am totally same even tho I get to my destination I have a melt down before hand x
Same 😭
Me too I'm terrified of driving
Oh my gosh, I thought this was only me!
I've always been so embarrassed about my driving fear since everyone else in my family doesn't mind driving, and I feel so ashamed of putting off getting my driver's license. These videos help more than you'll ever know. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing!! I think a lot of people watching these driving anxiety video's can see from the comments section that there are so many people having similar issues. When you feel ready, you'll be able to start working towards your license.
Any updates? 💛
Glad to know that I’m not alone. I’m 30 and I have a fear of driving. But since I’ve had my son it’s hard trying to get anything done. I took the first step in getting my learners permit. Next I’m going to get my actual license. I believe in myself and I know I’m going to be okay!
I love that you're taking it one step at a time. You can do this!!
Wow you and I are in the exact same boat!!! Good luck to you!!

my parents talked me into buying my first car but now I am so terrified of driving anywhere and I am so ashamed.. I'm 29 and I feel like a failure
Do this in your own time. There is a balance to be had between feeling pushed into driving or never driving because you want to stay in your comfort zone. You will have to push yourself into it at some point, but you be the judge of when that is. Nothing to be ashamed of!
Hellooo I just turned 28 I know it sucks and I get compared to younger people ⛄️, but being safe is better than driving in fear , having someone picking you up or calling a cab is better than having anxiety attacks while driving. Because I know if I drove a car , it’ll mess me up
I always feel anxious before driving . The night before the day of driving makes me sleepless and worried . I'm always filled with negative thoughts .When i'm driving my mind just stops working and i feel so so stressed . I always had a dream since childhood of driving my own car .Now when i have my car , i just become so so so stressed at the time of driving . This all has made me so depressed . I'm the only one in the family who drives so i can't share all these feelings with my family also because they will never let me drive.I just want to enjoy driving and stop feeling anxious about it . Also one more thing, whenever i drive and comeback home ,i rewind all the journey in my mind every single time .This feels so depressing. I know i drive fine but still there is some sort of fear in my mind . Please help me to get rid of this . Please give me a solution.
I'm 32, I'm a brand new driver, and I'm still scared too. I really want this though, so I am determined to find a way to get pass this.
@@divsharma5478 i can kinda relate to you. but don't worry you're not alone. I remember when my parents would make me drive only 5 minutes to mcdonalds without warning, only a 5 minute drive. yet my heart dropped. usually i'll prepare and like think about the journey before i drive. its ok man, it takes time. and we're still a work in progress. but i know someday you'll be able to drive without that anxiety building up everytime :)
You know that feeling when you’re going down a rollercoaster and you feel that drop in your stomach? That’s what I feel whenever I start to panic about getting in an accident and I tense up bc in my mind I think that a car will hit me, and also cars that are close behind me make me nervous. I just want to drive in peace 🥺
Isn't it amazing what anxious thoughts can do to the body? Someone else recently mentioned being scared about aggressive drivers that get too close, so I'm planning on making a future video about that.
Just wanted to let you know I have uploaded a new video about what to do when a driver gets close behind you ruclips.net/video/R6kVwNPQ1xU/видео.html. You may find it helpful.
Yesss exactly ... the rollercoaster drop and butterflies in your stomach
I have this same issue I pull over if a car is behind me.
I almost WANT to get in a crash just so the tension will end. It's a form of torture.
I needed this so much. Thank you for making this video. I have such a huge appreciation for the kind people who recognise the issues that people face and are trying to address it. Thank you for your help.
Thank you for your kind words, it's much appreciated! The video's actually came about because I know people who have this type of anxiety, so I get to see first-hand how much driving can distress them. Yet in other areas of life they are in complete control.

I’ve had a phobia of driving on motorways for around 7 years now. Looking at other comments it seems like I’m not as bad as others, but I feel for anyone who has to go through this.
I too have this fear. Came out of nowhere about 10years ago while I was driving on the highway. I just felt trapped. And that feeling still follows me. And it sucks cause for my work some times I may have to drive. I’m watching these videos to cure this.
It's been 4 years since I got my license, I drove very few times and eventually gave up. I'm thinking about taking some classes again in order to get more confident but honestly the idea of me waking up one day, geting in the car and just go somewhere by myself feels crazy and so scary!! Also i get stressed everytime i hear about car crashes and accidents that are happening. And i feel this pressure from family for not driving and I can't stand this. I's not that i don't want to, but the fear is big. I've been dreaming of having my car and going to places instead of having to use public transport but then again i think about all the bad stuff that happen on the road and i'm so scared.
I think you might be thinking too far ahead and scaring yourself. Take it just one step at a time. First, get in touch with that feeling you talked about of having your own car and not having to rely on public transport. Allow yourself to dream of where you could go or how it could create freedom for you. And make yourself a small, achievable goal. For now, you could just research driving instructors who specialize in helping drivers gain more confidence after a period of not driving.
Omg I’m the same ,moreover I’m 33 a single mom I really need prayers .
Such great videos. I’m learning to drive in the UK at the age of 49. Better late than never. I’ve had terrible driving anxiety and have been feeling embarrassed and frustrated. You’ve already made me feel so much better. Thank you.
I'm so pleased that you're starting to learn to drive. Starting at a later age can feel difficult, but you've got a lot going for you. As we age, we care a little less about what other people think, we have a bit more patience, and we now know that the brain has the ability to learn new skills at any age. If you like J-Lo, you might appreciate this video ruclips.net/video/ppr0Qaqzjq4/видео.html&feature=emb_logo
I’m learning to drive now, at the age of 43... no one seems to understand my deep fear and growing anxiety when driving... it’s embarrassing...
i am 39 yo now and i just bought a new car and start driving only 3 months steel i am learning! each morning befor i start the engine i feel anxious and shaky! Then after a 10 minut drive slowly i get calm! So if i did it then you can make it to! dont give up take it step by step
I got my license at at 16 (I think, I could have been 17) and I loved it. I was anxious when I had my permit, but oddly enough I was fine once I had my license and loved driving. But the last 2 years for me have been really tough mentally. 2021 has been AWFUL for anxiety for me, I can’t drive, I can’t go anywhere alone, stop lights and traffic make me panic and the busy roads trigger a lot of anxiety. It came out of no where, and I feel so depressed and worthless. I just don’t know what to do.
I often get asked, ‘why did my anxiety start out of nowhere?’ And it’s true, sometimes it can seem like everything was fine and dandy one minute and then a raging phobia the next. But once you start unpacking the events that led up to the phobia, it’s becomes clear that there were some stressful life events before the anxiety struck out of nowhere. When you’re going through a stressful time, it creates the perfect breeding ground for a phobia to develop. The stressful events could be negative (grief, divorce, bullying at work, illness), neutral, such as a hormonal shift (menopause, adolescence) or positive (planning a wedding, moving home, starting a new job). This is often the explanation when you can’t understand why you suddenly developed a driving anxiety after 2 or even 20 years of enjoying driving. So please be gentle with yourself, 2020 and 2021 have been tough years and I imagine a lot are going through similar situations. If you find it difficult to drive on your own at the moment, so be it, have a partner keep you company. Your worth is not dependent on whether you drive or not!
I’ve had the same thing waiting in lines for coffee with my wife or traffic or people driving crazy really makes me panic
I'm 24 and get so much pressure from family/friends to get a licence and start driving. I took lessons a couple of years ago while having a phobia then but then gave up after completing lessons. I'm trying again this month after rescheduling 5 times.
Videos like this + therapy are helping- thank you!
Don't let the outside pressure get to you. Learn for you, you'll get so much more from it that way. My suggestion is to figure out your personal motivations for driving, that may help you to keep going. Hope you go for your next lesson!!
i'm a new driver, i passed my test in july but for some reason i am very anxious about driving, having a mishap, making mistakes, and it's spoiling the experience for me. i try to keep a lid on it but it doesnt always work. i'm lacking in confidence which doesnt help. Thanks Clare for some very useful tips.
I remember back to when I first passed and the nervousness I felt when first driving alone. I literally drove for less than 5 minutes and came back to the house exhausted. Your driving doesn't have to be perfect, you can make mistakes. It's a skill we all have to learn, and only practice makes it easier. So be gentle with yourself, ease up on trying to be perfect. Drive little and often so you just get used to it. You passed the test, so you are a safe driver.
Generation Calm thanks Claire, I will keep telling myself that
Thank you so much for making this video and reminding me of my success story with driving .. I had a really bad anxiety that stopped me fr driving for seven years .. but then I took baby steps to start driving for the first time after getting my licence .. some people take driving for granted .. but we ( people with driving anxiety) know how challenging it is .. for everyone out there I would say: if I could do it, so can you 👍👍👍
You've come a long way and I love hearing your success story!! It's so important that others know it can get better. It's takes some work, patience and motivation. But you did it! And just like you said, others can do it too! Isn't it good to look back sometimes and see how far you've come? Nice work!
Thank you for sharing. I haven’t driven in a number of years due to the extreme anxiety and it gives me hope to hear other people’s success stories😊
I am 42, still afraid of it.
As a psychologist I do go with the client into his car and provide motivation, insights and required therapy. We do it, definitely.
That's fantastic! I know some psychologist's are reluctant to do therapy outside of the office due to liability and health and safety issues, but this is a great service you offer.
I’m trying like 3months on and off I could not overcome my fear specially on making turn I get nervous what should I do?
@@minawajid5038 You can email me and I will help you. Psychologyforall@rediffmail.com
I think part of the problem is 'on and off'. For you to be able to overcome your nervousness you need to try driving as often as possible, daily is best. Because making a turn will become easier, it will become like second nature, but it will only become that way if we practice often enough. It doesn't have to be a long time everyday - 20-30 minutes if you can manage it.
I wish my therapist would but covid restricts it
Your soft and calm voice reduced my Anxiety.....😌😌😌😌😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you so much!
I have dreamt of driving since I was a little girl. My dad was a great driver and my brother too. When I was 16, my father got brain cancer and my brother moved out. My dad lost most of his motory skills on his right side so he could not drive anymore. I went to driving school and I had a little accident (bumped into a parked car) which sparked my fear of driving.
Eventually, I managed to get my driver’s license and drive a couple of times. Then I stopped. I was an ok driver only when I had an exprienced male friend next to me, but incapable of driving on my own. I haven’t driven ever since and it is so frustrating to me.
On one hand, it’s almost like I associated driving with my dad’s illness. And then the fear has grown out of proportion and now I even feel anxious on highways. Just the thought of driving with lots of cars speeding around me make me so fearful. I am so sick of relying on public transports or being looked at as someone inferior for not being able to drive despite having a license. I moved to a foreign country 4 years ago and now I’m considering going back to driving school and take my driver’s license all over again. I can’t let this irrational fear win.
I'm so sorry to hear about your driving experiences, but you are not alone with this fear. Everybody's story is different, but the effects are the same (often feeling 'less than' other people who can drive, feeling like a burden to others or over-reliant on public transport). Being in a foreign country might be the perfect opportunity to go back to driving school. Take your time with getting out there on the road again, you can take as many lessons as you like while you get comfortable with driving. You got this!
@@GenerationCalm Thank you so much for the gentle words ❤️✨ I appreciate your work enormously!
Go girl......all the very best 🖤🖤

How fantastic that you're taking lessons again! You're getting back in the drivers seat after 4 years. It takes a lot of guts to just do that! You'll get there ... and the confidence will come with practice!
I’m crying reading this, cuz I had my license for 1 year and I have the same issue, and I have nobody to talk about it.....
@@inesvaz4923 so sorry to hear that but I can tell you that it gets better with practice

How do u take lessons where do u go
I have my license 2 Years agosto I bought a car and scared to drive. It's so embarrassing. I'm tired asking people for ride to work.
Even just being in the drivers seat freaks me out. I've grown so used to always riding shot gun that the shift in perspective is jarring. Suddenly all of my surroundings seem completely alien and im consumed in panic. My mind keeps telling me "No this is totally wrong. This isn't right and we need to get out of here right now" I think the first step i have to take is just sitting in the car stationary with no intention of going anywhere until it stops feeling like I've been transported to a whole new dimension. I can't let this fear control my life anymore.
I think your idea of the first step is perfect for you. Sitting in a stationary car, have the music on, get comfortable and just hang out for a while. Making the car feel like a second home will go a long way to helping you feel less anxious

i’m from a small town where there are no freeways or stoplights and i just moved to a good sized city with double lanes and all kinds of intimidating things. i’m 16 and i have my permit, but i’m not a very experienced driver. i used to live on a dirt road and i’d drive on that because there was no one else on the road so i was comfortable, but when i got on the highway, the high speeds were overwhelming. i think i’m so terrified to drive because in drivers ed, i was shown all kinds of accidents and they were pretty scary. i’m sure once i get my confidence back i’ll be able to learn and grow more as a driver. your video has helped me get motivated and i will remember your words when i get anxious on the road! thank you!
You can work up to highways. For now, just slowly get used to these new intimidating roads in your town. It's probably about familiarity. You were used to your dirt road and it felt comfortable. After time, you will get comfortable in your new surroundings too. Wishing you much luck!
I found your videos today and am so glad I did. I am taking my driving lesson today and am so scared and nervous. Really going to try to heed your words when I am in the car.

...I wasn't even sure I was in the right place when your (compassionate ) video was among the first to "pop up" Claire. After viewing and receiving the heart behind helping those of us who have this issue, maybe even some of us didnt know what the problem really was to the stall in driving, but seconds after watching these tears of release started to fall and I knew I had taken the first real step to addressing my delay. I dont believe the blockage will have too much power over me that much longer...God bless you and thanks, really.

Hi Clare, thank you for this video. Is really helpful for me. I never knew that something like driving anxiety does exist and how dreadful it can be until it happened to me. I always felt confident to drive, used to be lorry driver in the past and currently I'm a bus driver. 4 weeks ago I had really bad face to face crush while driving bus and since then I'm literally "paralysed" mentally, anxious to drive again. I've been off for 4 weeks now from work but after watching this video yesterday I sat behind the wheel and was able to drive few miles with my car and hopefully I can return to work soon. Thanks again for this video
I’ve been dealing with driving anxiety for years and it seems to come and go. But lately I really feel like giving up. Thanks for this video and keep doing what you’re doing, it gives me and so many others hope!
I know it can feel overwhelming, but you can go at your own pace of getting back out there on the road
I had a panic attack while driving back in October of 2020. I haven’t been able to drive by myself since then. I occasionally will drive five minutes away from my house but the second I make it to my destination or come home, panic attack occurs. I’m terrified I’m going to pass out while driving is the biggest thing.
Having a panic attack is so intensely unpleasant that most people will do anything to avoid having another one. Which is how so many phobias begin. Know this, while having a panic attack, your blood pressure is higher, so you can't pass out. But it's important to focus on slowing down your breath while it passes. I imagine the reason the panic attack occurs once you've gotten to your destination is because you start overthinking what 'could have' happened. The good news is that you have only had this fear for a relatively short time, which means you can overcome this fairly quickly. But only once you are a little less stressed in life in general (most panic attacks occur when we're going through a stressful life event). You don't need another thing to add to your 'to do' list if you're currently going through a hard time.
Excellent! These are concise, rational and easy tips! Great video
Thank you for this video. Very good tips.
Honestly needed this. I've been having very bad nightmares about driving such as getting in a wreck or like dying. Just thinking about driving makes me feel very anxious. Even though I'm only 17, soon enough I am going to be an adult and I'll need to learn how to drive. Im hoping my fear can go away so I can drive without feeling anxious
Once you start the action of driving, you'll find the anxiety will go away. It's early days for you, you got this
This video was really helpful, thank you so much. im just crying watching this because it really is extremely frustrating, and having someone tell me its ok after i've been scolded so many times just made me tear up.
It's a far more common fear than anyone lets on, because people are often too embarrassed to say anything about it. Take your time with it!
@@GenerationCalm Thank you so much :') I will
I’v just bought a car. I had my license a year ago, and never been on the driving seats since then. Tomorrow, I will have my first try, driving my own car. This video has been very helpful! Thank you so much!
What a wonderful video!!! Thank you so much!
This has helped me immensely to understand what is going on with me. I drove the length amd breadth of the country for 18 years and then developed a horrific fear of driving. Now I struggle to drive 5 miles to town without having a panic attack. Its cost me a job I loved and I need to get back on track.
Its awful because I can be absolutely fine then I start to panic incase I have an attack. Its awful and I dont know how to break the cycle.
Sometimes the fear develops at a time in your life when there's a lot of stress going on (like a break-up, grief, illness, a house move). You'll get back on track. Just take your time working back up to how you used to drive.
I truly appreciate this video! I didn’t always have driving anxiety. I just had my first child I’m 33, and after having my son and dealing with some postpartum, also came driving anxiety out the blue I’m not even sure what triggered it, but it’s extremely frustrating for sure! I love the idea of meditating before driving! Thank you 🙏🏼💚
It can often start during a period of stress or hormonal flux (having a baby definitely falls under those categories). But it also means that it will be easier for you to get back to normal quickly because it hasn't been a problem for you for very long. You might find these affirmations perk you up before a drive and get you in the right mindset ruclips.net/video/Fd20cAQKYnE/видео.html. But don't be too hard on yourself, having a baby is beautiful but it's also stressful. So be gentle with yourself.
I feel the same happen after had my daughter I was never been like that
@@clarissavelasquez1645 yes I’m still dealing with it, overcoming it slowly, but it’s been tough. We will get through it!!! Speak positive affirmations to yourself!! Speak life back into you, retrain your subconscious mind so that it’s not dwelling in fear. I’m with you! We got this 🙏🏼💚
I'm going through the same thing. It's really bad cause now my maternity leave is over and driving to work is a problem . I'm scared to change lanes 😟
thank you for this video!! i’m 18 and get driving anxiety after a car accident. i don’t have license yet but tomorrow i want to overcome my fear by applying for driving school
Ill definitely try to remember to take tiny steps and get over my phobia.. you are very right about having blips.. i feel either over confident or just purely lack confidence to drive. I hope I can get over it. It definitely affects lifestyle and choices that I make.
I once saw on telly a woman who developed a fear of turning right after an accident. She had to turn left, even if it meant going routes that took miles to do. I hope she got over it and got help; she couldn't avoid turning right all the time.
Hello I'm 46 yrs old and my anxiety for driving has been hindering my life for years..Sometimes i feel ashamed of not being able to drive...I'm glad i came across this video..Daily I will try my best to fight this.
You can do this. Shame is such a crippling and negative emotion and it can keep you stuck. But there's nothing to be ashamed of. The antidote to shame is self-compassion. So be nice to yourself and see how you can transform into a confident driver. You may find these affirmations helpful as you move forward ruclips.net/video/Fd20cAQKYnE/видео.html
Am so happy to learn that am not alone currently joined a driving class am 35 and I can feel like am getting better with the anxiety 🙃 I really want to do this .....thanks for sharing
I you have a very calm way of talking and if every person learning to drive had someone like you as a teacher , it would be so great .
Iam 54 years old and learning driving . Making an effort to overcome my fear of driving . And stumbled upon your video . Loved it !! Thank you
So nice of you, thank you
She's very reasurring, she speaks in a calm tone which is motivating me as I am not confident at all, she speaks about exactly how I feel and I feel confident as I feel like it's very normal which is motivating like feel like im ready to drive, thank you for your guidance
Thanks for sharing this. Driving anxiety is normal for so many people and I'm glad you're feeling motivated to overcome it
I have PTSD from an accident and have been too terrified to drive for the last 13 years. In the spring I am going to try again. I will rewatch your videos. Wish me luck.
If you take your time going through the steps, be patient and gentle with yourself I have no doubt you can do this. Wishing you tons of luck!
💜💜💜💜🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thank you, beautiful. I am going through my driving lessons after being without driving for almost 7 years. Before I had always been a anxious driver. But I have decided I'll put an end to this. I want to drive as confidently as I walk. Thanks for your help.
I needed this so much, especially the last part. thanks so much
Glad it was helpful! You'll get there, step by step
I'm 26 and have a fear of driving. When I started to learn, I was somewhat okay and handled driving well from age 13 to 16 but after that fear hit hard. I think it was mostly because I was panicking and got anxiety when driving with my whole family in the vehicle and my mom was a total backseat driver and by dad would yell back at her then they would get into a raging argument. My dad was calm when teaching it's just my mom always had unhelpful advice. My time driving was not calm at all. And there's a few other things that have happened with me just being a passenger that has made me have anxiety just being in a vehicle. I really want to over come it cause it's affecting my life big time for many years.
Thankyou so much for this video. I’ve always been fine driving but lately I don’t know why but I’m getting anxiety attacks when I drive on highways 😭. I know the only way I can overcome this fear is to practice more but it seems easier said than done 😭
Well, I think everyone's a little more anxious than usual these days. The extra stress is coming out in various ways, and for you it's driving on highways. Be gentle with yourself. Take your time and you can work up to it again.
@@GenerationCalm but how can you work up to it again if that includes your suggestion of pulling over and gaining composure? Highways are not conducive to pulling over on.
Thank you for making this video and having a very encouraging and realistic dialog. I really needed this, tomorrow I am practicing my driving with my boyfriend, I do have a lot of pressure of knowing how to drive so I am taking all your tips to account. I have my goal destination and I will work my hardest to not be scared of driving. Becuase I don't want to be scared of life anymore, I want to live and have new experiences and driving will let me do that.
Yesss, you got this! And remember, being scared is OK. With time and practice, driving will become less scary. But in the meantime, don't let those fears stop you from getting out there and practicing. Hope it went well!
Your tone is peaceful and your points are helpful. Thank you
You are so welcome, thank you
Great video series on driving. Luckily I am okay driving, but I've noticed I've started to get anxiety over parking! great tips thank you x
I've had a couple of people mention parking to me. Will keep it in mind for a future video x
Thank you so much! Had a bad lesson yesterday and I am sobbing since. What to do when you are too nervous to see clearly?
Sorry to hear that you had a difficult lesson. Sometimes it just takes one thing to get us off track and we then lose focus. Ask your instructor if you can pull over and take a moment to compose yourself, slow down your breathing, and remind yourself that you are still learning and that it's ok to make mistakes. Then get back on the road. In the meantime, before your next lesson, don't dwell on the lesson. When you're learning anything, you'll have bad days and good days, but when you look back it's the bad days where you've learned the most.
Very good friend video about driving over bridges, because fear on the roads is difficult but the important thing is to overcome it. Thanks for sharing those 6 steps, nice video
Yes, you are right. Overcoming a fear is not a quick fix but it will open up a new world of opportunities.
I really love your encouragement for driving anxiety. I learned so much from it. I will start doing what you advice staying calm and breathing doing meditation before driving. Thank you for sharing it.👍❤️
You're welcome and good luck 🍀✨
Thanks I needed this I’m 37 and I’m so scared of driving but I’m trying to push myself to do so and sometimes I just can’t do it so I just Jim out the car and i don’t know what it comes from I don’t like when other ppl drive too it scares me so much
Yes, pushing yourself to face the fear is good, but do it a little at a time. And please be gentle with yourself. There's no point beating yourself up about being scared of driving. You'll slowly get there. Figure out your reason for wanting to get over your driving anxiety. That will help you find some motivation. In the meantime try this next video, you might find it helpful too ruclips.net/video/PprXGuFn2fk/видео.html
It's not that I have fear of driving, it just instructor making it seem like I would crash. Too much negative emotions put me into spot
Yes, unfortunately a small number of instructors can have that effect on learner drivers. It's a shame! I wonder if it's possible to find another instructor.
Thank you so much❤
I just had a panic attack because I have to drive somewhere I'm not confident in driving today, but I put this video on and your voice just Intsantly calmed me down a bit, and now after watching the full video it's given me a lot more confidence to drive today, and I'm actually kind of excited to use some of these techniques, thank you so much.
How wonderful. Going from 'nervous to drive' to 'excited to drive' is a shift in mindset that makes the process so much easier. Good luck with your driving
I'm a guy, I'll be 34yrs this year and the fear of driving is ruining my life. Fear has held me back from accomplishing so much in life including getting my license God alone knows sighs..
I want to force myself to work towards getting my license before this year ends. I need to overcome my fear and anxiety it always makes me feel as if people are watching me or I would make a mistake or people would laugh at me.
Honestly I just loathe driving in my area. Especially multiple days in a row: I'm just so tired of dealing with people rushing others off the road, people who damn near cause an accident, people who just don't have any concern for other drivers on the road. It makes me stressed out because it just adds unnecessary strain on everyone else.
I know, it's hard when other drivers are just so inconsiderate or distracted.
I have to drive again after nine years of getting my license and never actually driving during that whole time. I don't know why it is being so hard for me all of the sudden, I would expect being clumsy but being this afraid to the point of crying in the car and also crying while watching your video is so unexpected, I don't know where any of this is coming from but thanks a lot for uploading the video, it is really helpful, I had no idea this fear was common.
9 years is a long break so it's understandable to feel overwhelmed about driving again. See if you can get some practice in and gain your confidence in steps. You may find this video helpful ruclips.net/video/PprXGuFn2fk/видео.html.
Ty so much for making this video.
My pleasure! I hope you find it helpful
Thanks for this Video.
I am 42 and going through that phase currently.
Have been trying to learn for last 7-8 years now.
Left it for 6 years in between due to phobia.
Now got a little hunch back for learning.
Wanna do this anyhow this time.
There have been so many failures and I feel so embarrassed.
Don't feel embarrassed ... everyone has a fear of something! Get back into driving in a slow way, step by step you'll gain your confidence,
@@GenerationCalm Thanks alot. God bless you ♥
For people out there who really wants to know what fear of driving is, I will share my experience here. Fear of driving/ riding is a very emotionally and mentally breaking driving phobia. like most of us I was waiting to pass my driving test to drive and enjoy with friends. I always sat near the driver seat to watch and learn the driving in my childhood . My driving classes and test was not so hard I passed tests so easily with my skills and love for driving . I got my license at 18th and the second week of getting license I drove omni van with my 6 friends from Alappuzha to Vagamon in Kerala, that was my first hill driving experience . The best part is that I was the only one who knows driving among my friends at that time and age . we visited different hilly areas with 18 to 46, hairpins in different cars ,SUVs, Vans and in different climatic conditions like heavy rain , fog , I was the driver for all the trips we had. I was having a very good expertise in night driving also . those were the best part and memorable days of my life. . I also used to ride bike to hilly areas like idukki, munnar , rosemala in Kerala and I also traveled from Kerala to Madurai in my bike . while typing this I am married and we have a 1 year and 6 months old kid and I am almost 30 years old . One day me and my wife went to panchalimedu a tourist spot in Kerala by bike . That was the first time I experience this phobia. I really didn't understand what's going on with me, I cant ride my bike upwards the hill . I stopped my bike and told my wife there is some issue with the bike . Again we continued our trip but again made different stops at different turning of the hill. Finally somehow we reached the destination .All that time I was complaining my bike because I dont know that this is all my mental fault. tThen we visited the area and started to return home. we started to ride the slope downwards but I cant control my bike . I told my wife the bike brake is having some issues. My wife took our backpack and started walking the downhill slopes and turns . Once the hilly road bends and slopes were over I was able to ride with her . returning home also I believed that my bike has some issues my wife also thought the same. After that one day i was travelling with my family in my car . I noticed that driving through bridges and hilly roads was not the same like before . I feel something suddenly when I see a bridge ahead. understanding about the situation I told my wife about my condition . she was shocked to hear that I cant drive like before. Now my friends drive in our trips to hilly areas . My friends also was shocked to hear about my situation . Two weeks before we went to aazhimala temple in TVM . I drove my car with friends, but when there was simple sloppy highway road in TVM I was not able to drive downhill and we all stuck there for like 20 mins . I was not able to descend the no1 highway road. I Cried in that situation with my friends in my car . actually this Place is almost 140 km away from my home I drove that 125 kms an i was not able to drive that 15 kms with height and slope highway road . Then i stopped a passing by person in bike and told him to go slowly in front of my car so I can climb and descend the road. I cried in my car and all my friends were just making me drive like the olden days . Now I am a marketing executive I ride like 1200kms 1 month in my bike for marketing purpose till I face this issue but without riding and driving I cant live . I always take shortcuts without bridges or bypass. still feeling bad and feeling guilty I cant take my wife and son to a hilly destination by driving. This feeling is really killing me but I am fighting Harder to be that old driving expert .
Thanks for this
This really helps. I just got my license and to only to end up in a fender bender (minor scratches on his car but nothing dramatic) I thought my life was over but I realized it’s a lesson and it happens to the best of us. I though of never driving again but these tips really encourages me to put my best foot forward 🎉
I can mostly handle around town driving. The second it's a long distance I immediately panic.
That's common, staying close to home probably feels more familiar and comfortable
@@GenerationCalm any other tips to help me on long trips? I'm already making a crisis kit.
Hi ! I got my license two years ago but was not able to drive alone because of the fear. But today I watched ur video and mustered courage and took a small step towards overcoming this anxiety n fear I drove all alone to the grocery store, and here I am. If I can anybody can👍go for it guys. Thank you for the wonderful video🙏
That's amazing, I'm so pleased you did it! You might also like my driving affirmations video for a little more courage when you need it ruclips.net/video/Fd20cAQKYnE/видео.html. Keep it up!!

Kid you not, was thinking of giving up until I watched this…. Thank you 🙏. I am not giving up
Failed at driving test first. My mom made me drive traffic road. That was crazy. After getting license she make me drive high way but a busiest one😭.Really stressful.
im 27 and don't have a driving license 😭 however my instructor tells me im almost test ready but i feel anxious about driving. Especially since i haven't had lessons during lockdown i feel even more stressed to getting back to driving
Having a long break between drives can feel difficult, even for those of us who have already passed the test. It's normal to feel a bit rusty! But it sounds like your instructor feels confident in you, so that's a positive sign. You got this! Your first lesson might be a little intimidating after the restrictions are lifted, but you'll back into it and be ready for your test.
I have learnt driving and was driving fine i also passed my driving licence test and got licence but then one day accidentally i hit my car in my own parking and after that I m so scared of sitting in the driver's seat that my body shiver but after watching this video I have plan to come over my fear anxiety of driving.
Thank you so much for this video😊
Thank you very much. Definitely gonna try it. I always run out of the vehicle when I stop and not go back around the drive seat. So your suggestions are what I'm gonna follow next me
You're very welcome! I'm glad you're open to trying out the suggestions.
I only feel anxious before I drive or planning the trip but once I’m behind the wheel i feel more confident even tho sometimes i feel a bit nervous but i control it with my breathing or just singing in the car .. i wasted almost 3 years dealing with this stupid fear and lost so many work opportunities due to long distances or in busy areas.
Yes, building up to the drive can be so nervewracking. And you're right, when we do the action, in this case driving, it's not as difficult as we thought.
My driving instructor killed my driving confidence, having a go at me for slight mistakes. I finally passed 4 years ago but sill haven't drove since. I'm in my mid 20s now and I it's holding me back so I really need to sort it out.
Some people really shouldn't be instructors!! I imagine it's left you with doubts about your driving almost like hearing your instructors voice in your head. But, as you get back into driving, you'll gain confidence and believe in your ability more and more. You can get past this hurdle even after 4 years!
bro same! my driving instructor gives me headaches about the littlest things I do which don't matter and can be sorted with time.
Me to had same experience
Thank you...I've been on my learners for 6 years..and I felt like such a failure..your video has helped me a lot!
Glad it helped! You're definitely not a failure
I'm not driving for ten years now I want to go back driving I've never been in an accident before I'm scared to drive on the highway or straight road I can drive around the town no bother, I needed this video. Thank you so much for posting this ❤
You can do this, even if you haven't driven for ten years. Just start slowly and practice as much as possible on quiet roads at first.
I;ve become more fearful of driving with age. I've noticed others have also. I used to drive everywhere and am determined overcome this. Thanks for the Video. Very good points to remember.
22 and working on not getting panic attacks when learning how to drive, I've never been in an accident but I feel like a lot of the tension comes from when my parents try to teach me.
Yes, having an actual driving instructor is often preferable because they're not going to get nervous or judgemental. Not saying parents can't teach, it's just there's a lot more tension.
You are awesome.
Superb insight and guidance
I am now building confidence after watching this video. I am new driver i can drive alone but still im worried that what if i hit somebody there's a lot of what if im scared what my father reaction after that what if. But now because i watch this video I'll drive back. It is what it is what ever happens i dont care the only important thing is that I'll drive safely. I'll continue to practice and practice safely and thats it.Thank you for doing this video Ma'am.
Hey! Do you have any advice on how to help anxiety when meeting other drivers? When I meet other drivers I panic and start making very small silly mistakes that I don't normally do.
Do you mean other drivers on the road or another driver who's a passenger with you? Either way, it sounds like you're most afraid of making mistakes, which probably leads you to believe others will think you're a bad driver. Remind yourself that everyone makes mistakes, it's a part of learning. Here are a couple of things you might like to try: a) work on your self-compassion b) try some affirmations like 'My driving gets better every day'. ruclips.net/video/Fd20cAQKYnE/видео.html
@@GenerationCalm Hey, thanks for your reply! Merging into busier traffic mainly. I'm fine when there isn't much traffic round about me but when there is I hit a panic and end up making such silly mistakes that I wouldn't normally make.
I used to be fine until I was a passenger in an accident 4 years ago and since then I've really struggled with driving anxiety and panic.
After a road accident i developed extreme fear of driving so i would love to work with you how do i get in-touch. I'm in the UK
So sorry to hear about your accident. I'm based in Florida and that doesn't stop me from working with people from all over the world from France to Australia to the UK, because I do everything online. I would be more than happy to help you, and there are a couple of ways to work with me. If you send me a quick message on my contact page www.generationcalm.com/blog/contact/ I can email you back and we'll see if I would be a good fit for you.
This is great…been dealing with driving anxiety for 5 years due to a car accident. I’m trying to get over it.
Sorry to hear you've been going through this. I know it's been 5 years, but take your time in facing your fear. You don't have to jump in at the deep end, just work your way slowly to expanding your driving range.
I'm going to use this video for future, driving anxiety has wasted my life, I've avoided going nice places and job opportunities 😢because I've let this get to me , but it's so difficult , I'm driving a little but not as much as I want to but I feel I've come along way than I did a couple years ago, I don't drive for 2 years the thought of it then would leave me sweating and would feel physically sick.
Yeah I was instantly relaxed as soon as she opened her mouth!
One thing that is absolutely essential, will be to get out there and drive ... everyday! 30 minutes a day, if you can, in addition to the normal routine driving you have to do for your family. But it's important to go at your own pace. First, only driving on roads where you feel comfortable. It's important to connect back to your childhood when you longed to have your own car. Think about what it meant to you. Because you achieved it! You passed your test. Now, think about your new goals. What would being able to enjoy driving mean to you? Write it down for yourself. What might you achieve if you could drive wherever you want to? At the moment, the only thing that stands between you and that goal is fear. But you can deal with that, by driving more often until you get used to it. I have an entire driving anxiety playlist with 9 video's ruclips.net/p/PLlhU5CGlNSZzyEPmTqeeOq0pM8b3vP5Bb. Take your time working through them because you can do this!
Generation Calm Thankyou very much . I also feel the same that i should drive regularly to eliminate my anxiety. Usually i drive once or twice a week but now i'll try to be more regular . And one more thing is that whenever i drive with family members i always want to impress them and then the performance pressure makes me nervous and i tend to do a few mistakes like harsh acceleration or sometimes releasing the cluth quickly making the car stop with a jerk.I always feel stressed about making a mistake.
This video is the right video for having confidence and taking control, her calm voice is what will help anxiety and overcoming fear, this is what everyone needs to be better at driving. You can’t learn with someone who afraid to let you have control or who don’t have patience it has to be someone just like her for guidance and safety.
Thank you so much Kandice.
I just started back driving after 15 years. I want to drive further. I just drive to the store and back. This video inspires me to go further.
