How to get over driving anxiety: Core Beliefs CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety)

  • If you are having difficulty overcoming your driving anxiety, perhaps a limiting belief is holding you back. A core belief is a deeply held belief about yourself, others and the world. This can influence everything you do and how you perceive the events unfolding before you.
    Limiting belief examples:
    I have to know everything otherwise people will see I’m not good enough.
    I have to be a perfect driver or I could cause a crash.
    Women can’t drive as well as men.
    I can’t drive on a motorway.
    A limiting belief is something you believe to be true but actually isn’t based on reality … it’s based on your past experiences. It wouldn’t hold up in a court of law. The challenge with limiting beliefs is that we’re blind to them. They influence everything and we allow them to limit our opportunities because we can’t see them.
    So this video is about noticing your limiting beliefs about driving. And how you can change them.
    When you take off your limiting belief ‘glasses’ you’ll find it easier to to get over your driving anxiety and move forward with your life.

    I needed this so much - before lockdown I used to be able to drive anywhere without a second thought about other mean drivers/big scary roundabouts etc - but over lockdown I became so much more anxious which has manifested as major driving anxiety. I am so scared of other drivers getting mad at me or messing up on a big roundabout etc basically all the beliefs you suggested 😭😭😭 it’s actually draining the life out of me having these beliefs engrained in me because I feel like I cannot enjoy anything in life anymore without being overly anxious and panicking about it

    • @GenerationCalm
      @GenerationCalm  3 года назад +5

      The fact that this has only happened since lockdown means it won't take you too long to get back to where you were. And you can take the skills from these driving anxiety videos (I have a whole playlist if you haven't found them already ruclips.net/p/PLlhU5CGlNSZzyEPmTqeeOq0pM8b3vP5Bb) and apply them to any area of your life. Just pick one area of your life (driving, work, social) and work on improving your anxiety/stress there first. Then you might find it has a knock-on effect for everything else!

    I can't thank you enough for your videos, I wrote you not long ago and so far I've been driving alone for seven days, started the week doing chores in the city and driving to work. Now yesterday I had a little hit with another car, it was my fault and as embarrassing as it sounds I got completely hysterical and started crying and saying sorry the whole time the other driver and I were doing the accident paperwork, thankfully it wasn't much to be hysterical about but I just couldn't handle it better, today I realized that my behaviour wasn't ok and that it actually wasn't the end of the world, because I firmly believed that everything was over then. As ironic as it sounds I'm more scared of driving through the city than driving through a motorway, perhaps because I have to drive through a motorway every day? In any case You really helped me a lot with past videos, I don't think I would have started driving alone without this help, and this video really helped in putting my thoughts on perspective, its going to be really helpful for the rest of my driving story. Sorry for the long comment, and thank you wholeheartedly for sharing these videos, much love

      Sorry to hear about your little bump. But it sounds like it wasn't too serious so you can pick yourself up, dust yourself off and try again. City driving is challenging for a lot of people ... especially after 9 years of not driving. So I'm impressed that you're already doing chores around the city ...alone!

    I avoid driving & always make excuses to get out of it. I got to the school and generally stay local. I get scared driving anywhere am not familiar with. I feel trapped and stupid. I worry about others think & take everything to heart. I dropped a friend to a supermarket the other day & she said i drive like a learner, that has set me back even more. I have no confidence , i really want to drive where i want but i dont even try. I avoid motorways & will get public transport even when it would be quicker & easier to drive. Please help. Its been 18 months now & i still get nervous & avoid in stead of confront.

      You do a great job of explaining your thoughts, beliefs and your difficult driving scenarios. I know it seems overwhelming right now, so it's time to set a goal. Think about if driving were not an issue for you, where would you go? What would you do differently. How would you feel? Let yourself dream and imagine what life would be like. (I have a visualization meditation that may help you do this ruclips.net/video/af7yvNL9qUA/видео.html). Then set a small goal that will set you on that path. Getting crystal clear will help you achieve the life you want.
      Secondly, because taking that first step towards a fear is difficult, try taking on an alter ego. (This video explains all ruclips.net/video/vkLSZXGxhi0/видео.html). Everything you need to get over this driving fear is already inside if you, but taking on an alter ego will help you reveal it.
      Thirdly, and I know it's difficult, but please be gentle with yourself. We all have strengths and weaknesses. But that doesn't mean we can't learn and improve. You can improve your driving and your confidence, you need to believe you can, and get started. Just like any skill, the more you drive, the easier it will become. I wish you all the luck in the world!

    Thank you for this video.
    I get anxiety about driving often times. I can also feel anxiety about long car trips. I have often worried about needing to use the bathroom on the road and not being able to stop somewhere for a while.
    There have been a bunch a times that I would avoid driving alone but also many times I have driven by myself. For some reason, I often feel comforted with some else in the car with me as I drive.
    I find that I enjoy doing doordash deliveries. I have noticed times I had avoided going on a delivery or postponing it later on. I am fairly new to it but I like it so far.

    • @GenerationCalm
      @GenerationCalm  4 года назад +2

      Yes, lots of people say they feel comforted by having someone with them while driving ... but that often depends on the passenger. Well done you for doing door dash deliveries though. You are obviously not avoiding too much, which is a good sign. You may eventually want to work up to longer trips. But for now, keep up with the deliveries and explore what sometimes makes you postpone (I'm a big supporter of writing down your thoughts).

Overthe day I became depressed because of fear to be fined. I'm student with wife and an autistic child I have little earnings and more responsibility. I cant afford driving instructors and nobody is there to help me. Feeling helpless.Your words are really healing. Huge respect and appreciation for your encouraging words with loving voice. I’ve been in several really bad car accidents, none were my fault. But now I’m scared to drive because I don’t have the confidence in myself that if something does happen I won’t panic and hurt myself or others. It’s been 3 years since I’ve driven.

    • @GenerationCalm
      @GenerationCalm  2 года назад

      I'm sorry you've been through those experiences. It certainly makes sense that you would be fearful enough that it stopped you from driving for 3 years. Perhaps, when you feel ready, you could consider easing back into driving ... very short and easy routes only! That way, you'll gain the confidence in your driving skills again.

    Hi Clare. I truly believe I can drive on the motorway however I have avoided them for many years now because of the false sense of fear that I feel. I did overcome it at one stage but now I am at the opposite end because I haven’t driven enough on the motorway. I don’t like the high speed, find it very difficult to overtake and get more anxious when I don’t see a hard shoulder. But I believe if I push myself and get a routine of practice in then it will get easy and easier for me. But my problem is the journey to the motorway is the bigger problem, once on it I believe I can handle it. Would like to hear your reply.. Thanks

    • @GenerationCalm
      @GenerationCalm  2 года назад +2

      I think it makes sense to start small still. Like you said, getting into a routine of driving daily, not on the motorway straight away but roads leading up to motorway and faster dual carriageways. Just keep practicing until you feel so comfortable you're ready to move on to the next step. When you first go on the motorway, plan for it to be at a quiet time of the week where you can practice with very little traffic. It's very normal to feel nervous after taking a break from driving on a motorway, but you'll get there with practice. If you haven't watched it yet you might find this one helpful ruclips.net/video/PprXGuFn2fk/видео.html and good luck

    I have trouble trusting other people driving the car. I feel like I have to be in control. It makes things more difficult. It seems to take me too long to understand changes in the road with construction and traffic. I get really stressed. I hate driving through big cities and lots of traffic although I have never had an accident. I don’t understand the fear. Driving familiar places are no problem. I think I feel like I will do something wrong and what if I get my family hurt in an accident? Vacation road trips are unpleasant for me and my passengers at times. I don’t want to stay like this. I don’t want my kids only vacation memories are their dad losing it over traffic.

If it's possible, do a 20-30 minute drive in addition to what you normally do.
