The 56th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. They'll be done by Election Day. In 2008, a lot of exciting candidates enter the race for President, and history is certainly made regardless of who wins. #mrbeat #presidentialelectionsinamericanhistory #elections

The 56th Presidential election in American history took place on November 4, 2008. This was the first election in which I voted in the primaries, and there were a lot of exciting candidates to vote for. But first, let’s see how George W. Bush’s second term went. Well, probably not that well. The Iraq War kept getting worse, and Bush became a scapegoat for the government’s poor response to helping victims affected by Hurricane Katrina. Not only that, but the economic was in shambles after the housing bubble burst in what later became known as The Great Recession.
In 2008, Bush’s approval rating had gotten as low as 25 percent. Therefore, many Republicans began to distance themselves from him. Was Dick Cheney going to run? Haha, that’s a good one, Mr. Beat. This election became the first time since the election of 1952 that a neither the current President or current Vice President ended up a candidate, and first time since the election of 1928 that neither even went for it. Then again, Bush couldn’t even if he wanted to due to the 22nd Amendment, but anyway...the Republican nomination was completely up for grabs.
I will mention a few. First of all, there was this guy…Ron Paul, a Congressman and doctor from Texas, stood out among the nominees because of his non-interventionist foreign policy and overall libertarian views. He had actually ran for President with the Libertarian Party back in 1988 but had lost badly. There was also Fred Thompson, an actor and former U.S. Senator from Tennessee, Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City. He was mayor, in fact, at the time of the 9/11 attacks, and like to bring that up. There was Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and, of course he’s a bass guitar player, too. There was Mitt Romney, the former governor of Utah and the son of George Romney, who was a presidential candidate himself back in 1968. And finally, there was John McCain, who was back for a second-go at it after not getting the nomination back in 2000.
McCain was polling in single digits after he first announced his intention to run, but eventually moved his way up to become the frontrunner. While the early primaries went back and forth, after Super Tuesday there was no stopping McCain. He became the Republican nominee, going with a surprise choice as his running mate. Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska. She was only the second female to be on the ticket for a major political party in American history.
The Democrat Party also had quite a few candidates. First of all, there was this dude….Mike Gravel, a former Senator from Alaska who appeared to not give a crap what people thought about him. There was Bill Richardson, the Governor of New Mexico, who was trying to be the first Hispanic to be President in American history. Then there was Dennis Kucinich, a U.S. Representative from Ohio who was the only running in 2008 who had the distinction of voting against the Iraq War. There was Joe Biden, the Senator from Delaware who also ran way back in 1988. John Edwards, Kerry’s running mate in the 2004 election, Hillary Clinton, the wife of former President Bill Clinton and by this time a Senator from New York. And finally Barack Obama, a Senator from Illinois, who was a relative newcomer but made a strong impression giving a speech during the 2004 Democratic Convention. Wooo, that’s a lot of candidates.
Well, there were really two front runners- Clinton and Obama. The two went back and forth in the primaries, and it got pretty intense. After a 17-month long battle, Obama finally got the superdelegates to his side, and in June Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race. The Democratic Party nominated Obama, who became the first African American to win a major political party’s nomination for President in American history. He chose Joe Biden as his running mate.
Much of the debate between the Republicans and Democrats in the presidential race revolved around the Iraq War and the financial crisis. Because Bush was so unpopular, McCain distanced himself from him, although Bush did endorse him. McCain had some blunders during his campaign, like not remembering how many houses he had, but so did his running mate Sarah Palin.

Then the day after the election happened, the school principal said on the innercom that kids weren't allowed to discuss the results. Later when Obama got inaugurated I remember two things:
1. Lots teachers refused to show it on the tvs in the top corner of our classrooms
2. My math teacher who was an elderly black woman had tears in her eyes watching the tv and said she remembered how bad things used to be when she was in school
Man your school was F'd up if teachers can't keep their Fox News Indoctrination to themselves. I bet they encouraged prayers though.

I'm surprised you didn't talk more about Sarah Palin in this video, as she's generally regarded as the main reason McCain lost. If I remember correctly, up until the conventions, both candidates were neck-and-neck, and I knew a lot of Democrats who said "I wouldn't mind too much if McCain won; he's pretty liberal for a Republican." But once Palin was announced as his running mate, and especially after her Katie Couric interview, the McCain campaign just took a nosedive and never recovered.
McCain still had a chance until the Recession. Palin just made it worse.
nah GWB's approval rating was 25% and the economy was shit. Any democrat was going to beat any republican, this was not a competitive race
McCain never had a shot. He was a joke.
That's what the Republican establishment wants you to think, but the reality is McCain was a bad and dull candidate that inspired no one. Barack Obama was fresh, charismatic, and connected with people. That plus the economy and no VP candidate would have made a difference
@@anonymoususer450 he didn't connect with people, lol. They voted him in because he was better than Hillary and McCain. And white liberals slurped him up because he is black.

This was the first election I paid any sort of attention to, and I still cannot comprehend why they went with Palin as a vice presidential candidate.
Christopher Highseat I wondered if he was trying to lose.
They were trying (unsuccessfully) to appeal to the more right-wing end of the party. McCain was too moderate for some. Also hoping her youthful energy would be appealing.
My thinking is they looked at her as "checking off several boxes" and didn't really do a thorough enough job of vetting her.
There's a reason the best known book about the campaign was "game change". McCain seemed to have little hope running a regular campaign, so the campaign took a flyer on this wacky person who energized the Republican base. She ended up having a bunch of skeletons in her closet and totally backfired.
They chose her in hopes to get some Clinton supporters to vote for John McCain
John McCain is a massive upgrade compared to George W. Bush and should have been the nominee in 2000. Sarah Palin as VP on the other hand… Well… Is trading evil for completely dumb an upgrade?

@@mkratos17 and Dems tried to compromise them anyway, even going as far as weakening the ACA by removing the public option, and still not a single Republican voted for it. This is in my opinion, the best video Mr. Beat has done, not only from this Presidential election series but the whole channel.
It sort of followed Matt that he voted in the primaries for the first time, the disaster's of Bush's second term and the background music, Coldplay's Viva la Vida. It is such a perfect song to capsulate the year 2008 and Obama's campaign and promise for hope and change. Young people from all aroune America hoped and destined for change in the system following Bush's scandalous wars, the collapse of the economy and so on, but Obama couldn't deliver on most promises yet he was, again, like many, "the lesser of two evils".
Well done Mr. Beat, the song puts a tear to one's eyes at the state of American politics following Obama's lack of initiative
He did dig the economy out of hole, put some significant reforms/regulations/requirements to health care and banking, also withdrew from Iraq, he couldn't do much more with the country frankly being pretty impatient and fundamentally divided and unwilling to work with him.
I'll never forget in my PolSci class in 2005/06 when my instructor mentioned some names to look out for and the one name she said to keep an eye on was a senator from Illinois named Barack Obama. This was my 1st election I voted and played Metroid Prime 1 and stopped playing to go vote haha.

As a 20 year old moderate (but leaning more right nowadays) lemme just say Obama might not have been the best president but he also got us out of the recession.. helped to change SOME peoples perspective on race (which goes a long way).. and overall did his best to put the American people first. I respect the man and wish nothing but the best for him and his family.
Ok I respect that
With respect, Obama didn’t “get us out of the recession.“ Free market economies are designed to recover from recessions on their own, which is what generally happened for the United States’ entire history until the Great Depression. The government intervention such as the healthcare and stimulus policies likely increased the length of the recovery. Economist Thomas Sowell is highly educated on this subject and has written many books about it. I recommend him to you.
@@brandoncara8204 I recommend a wide variety economists besides just the one prominent black economist who would say otherwise. Show some intellectual honesty here. General consensus is Obama's handling of the economy averted a more significant economic crisis and there is a vested interest amongst capitalists to act like government intervention didn't result in the longest period of economic growth after the New Deal policies of the 40's and overall prevailing belief Reagan's trickle-down economic has damaged the economy.
"But SoWeLL says..." If you felt confident in the facts you wouldn't have to specify who the above person should listen to reach the "correct" conclusion. You shouldn't need to mention a specific economist. The overall consensus of nonpartisan reports like the Congressional Budget Office as well as the overwhelming consensus of presidential scholars overwhelmingly support Obama's programs did a world of good particularly in job creation, GDP growth, and deficit reduction. Personally, I think acting like free markets and capitalism are scared cows in a reality where better systems do more good is silly as it implies certain systems regardless of effectiveness or impact are above debate or criticism.
You were so right about how Rudy Giuliani loved to bring up the fact that he was mayor of New York City. I remember when he ran in his election and, literally, everything he said had something to do with 9/11 or War on Terror. I believe that really hurt his chances because the main issues in this election were obviously the collapse of the economy and the UNpopularity of the Iraq War. "War" was the last thing most Americans wanted to hear at this point.
He might have performed better in the primaries had he campaigned in Iowa and New Hampshire instead of mainly South Carolina. He didn’t even partake in the debates until they got to SC.
USA needs people like Mike Gravel...he is the person who can truly reform the political system

Last election where we had two decent candidates.

This aged like milk.
@@ThunderTheBlackShadowKitty yeah you're right 2024 changed everything
@@nahtatroll January 6, 2021 changed everything. That was the day the GOP died and it's NEVER coming back. The old GOP your grampa knew is gone, man. Gone. The new GOP is something different...something much worse.
@@ThunderTheBlackShadowKitty The GOP isn't worse. Maybe if the Dems didn't bully them and harass them over anything and everything and falsely accuse them of every bad thing that's happened, it would be different.
It's a classic case of someone who was bullied constantly one day becoming a bully himself.
The Dems are the ones responsible. Quit acting like bigots and snobs and your party will be respected again.

And be careful RUclips doesn't copyright strike you for using Coldplay as BGM.

Primaries:
Republican:
Ron Paul
Fred Thompson
Rudy Giuliani
Mike Huckabee
Mitt Romney
John McCain
Democrats:
Mike Gravel
Bill Richardson
Dennis Kucinich
Joe Biden
John Edwards
Hillary Clinton
Barack Obama
I fucking knew you’d mention Ron Paul.
LMAO why is this comment so funny?
Why wouldn’t he?
This was my first election that I was able to vote in
After the recession there was no way MCain was going to win, ever
Even without the recession, McCain was gonna lose.
As someone who was in HS, I knew the winner of Obama vs Hillary would be the next president. And that was before we really saw the effects of the recession take root.
@@finchborat More people definitely seem to want to reelect president once but then not give his party a third term in a row.
"Palin was young ... like Obama"
I think that's the first time in history that someone made a comparison between Palin and Obama because most people just silently agreed that there is no comparison between the two in another - more relevant - metric.

imagine Hillary actually winning the superdelegates. obama would've had a go around with trump and whooping his ass and we wouldn't be in this mess. say what you will about obama's presidency, but his campaign was strong af
Donald Trump would have held his own. Barack Obama is one of the worst presidents, he coddled a generation of weak people.
An Obama vs. Trump election would've been fascinating, and given Hillary's personal unlikability and various blunders, I wouldn't be shocked if Obama could've won it.
Trump would’ve never even ran in 2016 since the main reason he was motivated to run was because of how disastrous the Obama Administration was
I have to express my annoyance with Obama being declared "the first African-American U.S. president" rather than "the first U.S. president to have African descent" or "the first racially mixed U.S. president". His mom is white, all I'm saying. To just look at a person's skin colour alone to determine race is a tad erroneous.
I agree. It's silly to bring skin color up, and it should be worded that way, but you know...society.
rockerdax I'm pretty sure other presidents have had African descent. Only 1 african ascendant is enough to have African descent...
Dill Sulix
Well obviously we all have African ancestors somewhere down the line, as it's where mankind originated from. Of course I'm talking about someone who has a parent of African heritage. But now that I think about it, it would be just as much of an American landmark to have a president who's parent(s) are of Haitian descent, or Australian Aboriginal descent.
rockerdax You're the kind of guy who don't understand that when we speak about african descent, we speak about black (or arab) people, not people living there hundreds of thousand years ago.
What I mean is that since there are a lot of black people in America, there's a pretty high probability that a white guy has african descent, even if its only one black person 300 years ago.
Under laws in effect at the time of Obama's birth, a person with any significant degree of black ancestry was considered to be black. There was no such thing as "half white." If Obama would have been subject to the burden of being black, he should receive credit for being black when he prevailed. See, e.g., Fla. Stat. s. 1.01(6) (repealed 1969) (defining a person with one-eighth or more of African blood to be a "negro" under the law).
Great to reminisce and refresh this era. The election of Obama in 2008 was the genesis of political thought for me as a zoomer.
The Coldplay backing music really drags this great explanation down
This was the first election since 1952 where neither a previous President or Vice President was nominated by either Party as their Candidate. This would happen again in 2016.
58.2% was highest turnout since 68? That’s sad.
We should have turnouts of 95% and voting should be mandatory. All local, state & federal elections should take place on the same day on the same ballot. Election day should be a federal holiday where you encourage Americans to discuss politics. If there was ever a good day for it, that's the day.
Who is here waiting for the next and last video in the series until another 4 years.
Trump v Biden

Biden won
He’s gonna have to talk about how he didn’t concede, it will be interesting

SO weird to think of 2008 as history, but I suppose if you're the age of Mr. Beat's students, it's as long ago as the election of 1908 or 1808.
And that was when I ruled the world...
When I was studying humanities the question 'when is something history?' came up a lot and, frankly, I never had the balls to say 'oh, maybe a little less than a decade after the fact?'
The music is fitting for this election, seeing Viva La Vida was perhaps 2008s greatest hit
