The 44th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. In 1960, it's JFK vs. Nixon in one of the closest Presidential elections of all time.
Feeling extra dorky? Then visit here:
www.countingthevotes.com/1960
The 44th Presidential election in American history took place on November 8, 1960. It was the first election in which Alaska and Hawaii could both participate. Dwight Eisenhower had a pretty good run, but he was the first President officially not allowed to seek a third term. His Vice President for eight years, Richard Nixon, now enthusiastically sought the Presidency. Several Republicans, however, supported Nelson Rockefeller, the Governor of New York and the member of the wealthy Rockefeller family. Rockefeller was the leader of the liberal/moderate wing of the Republican Party.
After he decided to drop out of the race, Nixon easily won the Republican nomination, but he was a little worried he didn’t have the Rockefeller Republicans on his side, so he met with Rockefeller to make sure they were on the same page on many issues. By doing this, Nixon sort of officially became a big government Republican, you could say. Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr., the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, was Nixon’s running mate. Lodge was a familiar name, as he was the grandson of Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and also had a bunch of other ancestors who were involved with national politics.
The Democrats knew they had to nominate someone exciting to get back to the White House. Many Democrats were interested. Most of them were new to the national scene, but most were just not that exciting. Pat Brown, the governor of California, wanted the nomination, but wasn’t that exciting. Stuart Symington, a Senator from Missouri, wanted it and was a bit more exciting. Then there was Adlai Stevenson, who had lost the last two presidential elections. Meh, not exciting. Wayne Morse, a Senator from Oregon. Better. Lyndon Johnson, the Senate Majority Leader. Even better. Hubert Humphrey, a Senator from Minnesota, yeah, kind of got people fired up. But really, there was just one man that energized the Democratic Party far more than any other. John Kennedy. And despite some harsh criticism that he was too young to be President- he was just 43 after all, the Democratic Party went with him anyway.
Even though Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson had their disagreements, Kennedy helped unite the party behind him by asking Johnson to be his running mate, and Johnson accepted.
So it was Nixon versus Kennedy. Both of them drew huge, enthusiastic crowds everywhere they went. Nixon promised to campaign in all 50 states, even Alaska and Hawaii. He probably later regretted that promise, however, after he hurt his knee on a car door and the knee got severely infected. After he recovered two weeks later, he stayed true to his pledge, but some historians say he was an idiot for doing so, as he likely just wasted valuable time visiting states he had no chance of winning anyway.
Lyndon Johnson greatly helped Kennedy by aggressively campaigning in the South. It was actually quite a smart move for Kennedy to choose him as his running mate. Still, several Americans criticized Kennedy for his youth, and just like with Al Smith in 1928, there were plenty of Protestants who didn’t want Kennedy, a Roman Catholic, as President because of his religion.
Since the economy was strong, Kennedy and Nixon often attacked each other on foreign policy. Believe it or not, this was the first time live presidential debates were held in the general election. There were four of them, and they were all on television, so it was a pretty big deal. For the first debate, most people who listened to it on the radio agreed that Nixon won. However, for those who saw it on TV, most agreed that Kennedy won. Why? Many say that Nixon looked uncomfortable and weak. He kept sweating, and was still recovering from his recent knee injury. He was tired from campaigning all day, and hadn’t worn any makeup, so his beard stubble showed up to viewers at home. Meanwhile, Kennedy looked rested, tan, and confident during the debate. It’s pretty crazy how many agree that appearing on television literally changed the outcome of this election.
However, going into election day, it was difficult to tell who would win. Everyone knew it would be close, and therefore this election became one of the most suspenseful and dramatic in American history.

I can't believe how many "but Roosevelt" comments there are here regarding Kennedy's age. Beat clearly said youngest ELECTED not youngest INAGURATED. Roosevelt wasn't elected to take office when he took over in 1901. Roosevelt won his election in 1904 at 46. Roosevelt is the youngest to take office, but second youngest elected. Kennedy is the second youngest to take office, but the youngest elected.
I hope this comment gets pinned that way the confusion can be lifted
It's a weird thing to be particular about. At worst, it leads to someone getting a trivia question wrong. At best...it's just a random bit of history.
Technically, he wouldn't have been INAUGURATED if he hadn't been ELECTED as vp.
Thanks professor. Kennedy was the first democrat to get assassinated. Any more useless trivia?
I’ve never heard anyone refer to him as just John Kennedy
Or Lyndon Johnson
I think Richard Nixon did in a televised interview in the 1980s, and presumptively other interviews.
The Animaniacs song does it.

Hawaii was the closest state in this election. Only 115 votes separated the two candidates. It was originally called for Nixon, but after a recount, it flipped to Kennedy.
I thought it was Florida in 2000 election. That’s crazy. Reminds me of the Iowa House of Representatives election where candidates were 6 votes apart
@@Joe-sd2kx Think that one’s close? There was a senate election held in New Hampshire in 1974 in which Louis Wyman (R) and John Durkin (D) were in a close race. At first Wyman won by about 355 votes. Durkin of course requested a recount. When the recount was finished, Durkin won by 10 votes. Then Wyman requested another recount, and when all was said and done, the final recount had Wyman ahead by just 2 votes.

I wonder why Adlai Stevenson even thought it was even worth trying to run for President for a third time? I would think after losing twice in the general election that he would get the message the American people didn’t want him as President.
It's kind of like how people are talking about Hillary running in 2020. Just... no. She's already lost one primary and one election. America has said no twice, she and others need to move on.
Well it’s not that they didn’t want him as president it was just the fact that he had to go up against a war hero like Ike and Ike was just a very popular guy I don’t think anyone could have beat him. He was just seen as the better out of the 2.
The Life Analyst that he did, also gotta account that the Dems in the 50s has Party fatigue there had been 5 terms previously of Democratic Presidents, that didn’t help them, made it much easier for Ike in 52.
Bc he had a cool name
McCain and Biden say hi.
Nixon and Kennedy both officially declined wearing makeup for the televised debate but what Nixon didn’t realize is that Kennedy had somebody apply makeup on him anyway.
Then, only minutes before they went on air, Kennedy played a psychological game by waiting until the the last possible second before he appeared on the stage, which threw Nixon off-balance even further.
Smart!

3:23 the difference in appearance vs sound is real. I work in radio and I edit a show every week that's a recording of a guy (we'll call him Bob) who gives a half hour seminar every Tuesday night. I edit the audio from Bob's seminar, and air it on Saturday. For the first year that I edited that show I never saw Bob, just heard him, and I thought he was the nastiest, rudest, most disrespectful guy I had every heard. I could just imagine him glaring and sneering at his audience through the entire seminar. Then I saw a video of one of the seminars I had edited. Bob was the sweetest, kindest, grandfatherly figure throughout the whole thing, and would take time to make eye contact and smile with every member of his audience.. Completely flipped my perception of his seminars on it's head. It's crazy how differently you can perceive watching someone talk vs just listening to the audio.
I love when the presidency is a very close election between two well liked candidates (at the time of the election)

Yeah, one of
4:35 this last election has shown us that the election doesn't even have to be close for one side to claim fraud
Technically it still was. Only about 120k or so votes in 4 states prevented trump from winning a absolute majority electorally. About 60k for a deadlock, where he still almost certainly would have won. We're talking about 120k out of 160 million total. Biden also had the same electoral number as trump so if you want to claim it was a blow out, then you gave to relent and say trump did as well. And sadly, like it or not, the popular vote really does not matter as long as we have this system. So you can try and talk about 7 million all you want, but its would make no difference if trump got that 60 to 120 thousand. So it was close, regardless if we like it or not
@@morgankingsley4992 yeah but trump became a sore loser despite the votes being recounted several times and no serious voter fraud claims were found to be legit
