In the years since leaving office, Bush has proved his humanity by maintaining close friendships with the Clintons, the Obamas and many more on the opposite side of the political spectrum. Reminds me of when UK Conservative leader David Cameron's young son died, and literally everybody in Parliament gave him messages of support and condolence. Wholesome as it should be.

What I like most is he never mentions "blacks" or "African-Americans", but as Americans who should be proud of what was accomplished then. It speaks volumes to the way he views people; not as groups, but as individuals. He was a terrible President, but I still believe Bush is a warm-hearted soul. As is Obama.

This was an incredibly humble and generous speech which he devoted almost entirely to congratulating and welcoming the Obamas. Like the first sentence he said Obama won. He even said his victory was impressive. People would’ve called the president weak for making this submission but it’s a sign of strength.
Yes the way both Mccain and Bush privately called Obama and then publicly spoke and said Obama won by name, shows that they affirm and support the elections. The invite to the White House is polite also to help the transition.
The Republican party was awful back then. Warmongers and moral absolutists who only served the corporations. Trump has made it a much more inclusive and welcoming party that focuses on the working class and opposes war. The two parties have essentially swapped places over the past decade.
One thing I'll say about Bush and Obama is that they both have class. I don't recall them bitching and throwing a fit when thing's didn't go their way, and when thing's worked out they were too humble to take all the credit for it, that's the kind of person i respect.

Man, I had so many gripes with Bush's policies, but nobody can deny he was a class act in the way he carried himself. This is a great speech showing phenomenal leadership. As much as I didn't like this man's presidency, I was always confident he cared about America and Americans and that, even if we disagreed, he had a lot of love in his heart. I miss this era of politics. I miss the people we were then.
I agree. For all his faults and bad decisions, this was one of the times he stood up and showed how a president should act. In addition, kudos to both Senator John McCain and then Governor (now senator) Mitt Romney for how they handled defeat in an honorable fashion. It is difficult to imagine the nation going back to the way things ought to be.
I was completely against most of Bush's policy and may never forgive his administration for Iraq. But even though partisanship was quite virulent in this period, it was nothing like the destructive forces US democracy faces today. How low things have sunk that this is the case.
Unfortunately you can't change others. But you can act like this yourself. I've been doing politics for over ten years now and the least I can tell you is that there is still a _significant_ number of people, both inside the parliaments of the world and outside on the streets, who have great respect for this. And they will pay it back in their own ways. Not everyone, of course, especially not today. But being a class act will never not resonate with people. And if it inspires some of them to follow your example, you've already made the world a better place and established your own tiny, little legacy. More to come, or maybe not, doesn't matter. At that point it was already worth it.

I think you cannot really compare that. This was after Bushs second term, so he did not lose those elections, his time was over anyway. If you look 8 years earlier, he also did not accept that that the majority of americans voted against him and he even only won the electoral vote in court. But of course Trump beats Bush by far in being the worst preseident ever. At Bush I can at least understand that some people liked him as person, Trump is a disgrace for the whole human species.

I did not have a great opinion of him as President., but the warmth and dignity of this address was beyond reproach and President Obama said he could not have been more welcoming and helpful throughout the transition. And now.....
It has been an interesting contrast seeing Bush as POTUS and Bush as a private citizen. After a few years, it made me realize that the George W. Bush we saw in the Whitehouse was merely a puppet "controlled" behind the curtain by the likes of Dick Cheney and Karl Rove . I think he was forced into becoming a president because he was part of the Bush family and that's it. He was a talking head for the more conservative parts of the Republican Party and when those policies were a failure Bush got the blame instead of them. In the end, I will remember George W. Bush the same way I remember Jimmy Carter. Bumbling presidents with good hearts that gave back more to the people of America as private citizens then they ever did as presidents.

I have to make amends. During his tenure, he was very unpopular here in Germany. People either hated or ridiculed him. That he was the face of the wars following 9/11 did not exactly help. But this is as presidential, educated and dignified as it can get. And on many occasions afterwards, he'd show the same spirit. Like that interview during Donald Trump's administration: "Mr. President, do you also believe that the press is the enemy of the people?" "No, theye are here to hold people like me accountable." Regarding his impacts there are dozens but the primary ones in my mind are the two wars, the economic meltdown and the raise of the government surveillance state. He made that speech without using the word "black" or mentioning the word "race". He talked about America and what a great country they had. That kind of positivity too has changed in the years since.
It says a lot about people indeed. You know that in 2000 Al Gore was called president elect by the media (as Biden is today) and that after multiple recounts, the results were flipped and Bush won (as Trump may do now). Bush didn't accept the result that appeared incorrect. His legal team called for recounts, as Trump's team is doing right now. When there have been 100+ affidavits submitted claiming they witnessed both intentional fraud and negligence, videos of poll watchers being denied entry(illegal) and the Supreme Court of a State overruling the legislature (against the constitution) then there is obvious cause for investigation. If people are so certain nothing went wrong with the mail-in ballots then what do people have to lose? People have very poor memory it seems. People that oppose the supervised counting of all legal votes and the discarding of illegal votes...it really says something about how much they actually support democracy.

I believe Bush was always ahead in Florida but that one state would determine the presidency. The margin of victory was minimal - less than 2k out of 6million voters. The recount for small margins of victory is widely mandated to protect the integrity. Big difference between Gore/Bush and Trump.

What I like most is he never mentions "blacks" or "African-Americans", but as Americans who should be proud of what was accomplished then. I was completely against most of Bush's policy and may never forgive his administration for Iraq. But even though partisanship was quite virulent in this period, it was nothing like the destructive forces US democracy faces today. How low things have sunk that this is the case.
Unfortunately you can't change others. But you can act like this yourself. I've been doing politics for over ten years now and the least I can tell you is that there is still a _significant_ number of people, both inside the parliaments of the world and outside on the streets, who have great respect for this. And they will pay it back in their own ways. Not everyone, of course, especially not today. But being a class act will never not resonate with people. And if it inspires some of them to follow your example, you've already made the world a better place and established your own tiny, little legacy. More to come, or maybe not, doesn't matter. At that point it was already worth it.

It has been an interesting contrast seeing Bush as POTUS and Bush as a private citizen. After a few years, it made me realize that the George W. Bush we saw in the Whitehouse was merely a puppet "controlled" behind the curtain by the likes of Dick Cheney and Karl Rove
. I think he was forced into becoming a president because he was part of the Bush family and that's it. He was a talking head for the more conservative parts of the Republican Party and when those policies were a failure Bush got the blame instead of them.
In the end, I will remember George W. Bush the same way I remember Jimmy Carter. Bumbling presidents with good hearts that gave back more to the people of America as private citizens then they ever did as presidents.

It says a lot about people indeed. You know that in 2000 Al Gore was called president elect by the media (as Biden is today) and that after multiple recounts, the results were flipped and Bush won (as Trump may do now).
Bush didn't accept the result that appeared incorrect. His legal team called for recounts, as Trump's team is doing right now. When there have been 100+ affidavits submitted claiming they witnessed both intentional fraud and negligence, videos of poll watchers being denied entry(illegal) and the Supreme Court of a State overruling the legislature (against the constitution) then there is obvious cause for investigation. If people are so certain nothing went wrong with the mail-in ballots then what do people have to lose?

I believe Bush was always ahead in Florida but that one state would determine the presidency. The margin of victory was minimal - less than 2k out of 6million voters.
The recount for small margins of victory is widely mandated to protect the integrity.

In my country we have an actual democracy so we can watch any and every news outlet to gather a big picture of the happenings in the world.
