The 57th episode in a very long series about the American presidential elections from 1788 to the present. In 2012, Obama seeks re-election, but a lot of Americans are still upset. #mrbeat #presidentialelectionsinamericanhistory #elections
This is the last episode until the Election of 2016. I can't believe I made the deadline! Thanks to all who supported me during this series.

The 57th Presidential election in American history took place on November 6, 2012, my 31st birthday. Oh crap, I’m getting old.
Barack Obama became President as the economy really sucked. It was known the Great Recession, and the Obama administration's solution was to have the federal government micromanage the economy in a way somewhat similar to Franklin Roosevelt’s administration. Then again, the George W. Bush administration micromanaged quite a bit, too. Obama continued the bailouts of corporations, but also of ordinary people, and Obama signed laws like the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to try get the country out of the recession.
By 2012, the recession was over, but the economy just trudged along. It was nothing to get too excited about. And the rich kept getting richer and the poor kept getting poorer. This led to unrest on both sides of the political spectrum, with The Tea Party movement on the right, and Occupy Wall Street on the left.
Still, Obama kept a campaign promise by bringing the troops home from Iraq. Well, kind of. We still have military bases there. Obama did send more troops to fight in Afghanistan, and we are in fact still there fighting right now. Obama also sent troops to Libya and expanded the drone strikes in several countries to continue the War on Terrorism, especially in Pakistan. Speaking of Pakistan, on May 1, 2011, U.S. Navy SEALS killed Osama bin Laden, the dude who claimed responsibility for the 9/11 attacks, after they found him hiding seemingly in plain sight in Pakistan.
Of course, the most famous and probably biggest accomplishment during Obama’s term in office was his signing of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare. The main objectives of the law were to make sure everyone had health insurance and to lower the cost of healthcare.
The Democratic Party still loved Barack Obama, and he was easily renominated, along with the 47th Vice President in American history, Joe Biden. Hi Joe!
The Republican Party, meanwhile, had some division. Yet again, quite a few nominees competed for their nomination. The leading four were former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, back again trying for the nomination after not getting it in 2008, U.S. Representative Ron Paul, also back a second time trying for the nomination after not getting it in 2008, Rick Santorum, a former Senator from Pennsylvania, and Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House, who led the Republican Revolution of 1994. I have to mention that Gingrich used to teach both history and geography at the University of West Georgia.
The Republican candidates had some heated debates and definitely disagreed on several issues. It seemed like it would be tough for the party to unite behind one candidate. But they somehow did. They nominated Mitt Romney, although many Ron Paul supporters resisted his nomination, and Paul himself did not endorse Romney. Romney was the first Mormon to be nominated by a major party to run for President. Romney picked Paul Ryan, a U.S. Representative from Wisconsin, as his running mate.
The Libertarian Party had gained a lot of momentum, probably because of the popularity of Ron Paul. They nominated Gary Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico for President, with Jim Gray, a former judge, as his running mate. Johnson originally tried for the Republican nomination but wasn’t doing so well so instead joined the Libertarian Party.
But yeah, don’t you know we have a two party system, Mr. Beat? The campaigns for Obama and Romney broke records for the amount of money spent and the amount of negative campaigning. This was the first presidential election after the Supreme Court case Citizens United v. FEC, which opened the door for unlimited election spending by corporations. Most of that spending went toward super PACs, or groups trying to drive public policy or get politicians elected without directly working with any candidates or political parties.

Barack Obama ultimately carried the state of Florida with 50.01% of the vote, to Mitt Romney's 49.13%, a margin of 0.88%. Having also won the state in 2008, Obama's 2012 victory made him the first Democratic president since Franklin D. That's exciting stuff. I really appreciate you watching them and sharing them. Don't worry, this series might be wrapping up, but it's going to be replaced by something terrific. (Trump reference)
I have two main theories why Clinton lost
1) The media kept saying Clinton was going to win so voters didn't bother voting (Brexit paradox)
2) Bernie Sanders supporters, angry he didn't win gave spite votes to Trump and Stien.
plus most who were going to vote Clinton, weren't voting Clinton they were voting against Trump.
The same voters in the rust belt who voted Obama in 2008 voted for Trump because he represented change- just like Obama in 2008. Clinton was seen as more of the same by these voters.
Clinton didn't bring excitement like Trump or Obama did. The Dnc should have gone for someone more charismatic like Biden or Sanders.
I'm hoping to give Trump a chance, but only time will tell.
(Hindsight is 20-20 isn't it?)
+Westportlad You are pretty spot on, I think. A lot of people who voted for Trump didn't necessarily like them. They just wanted to give a giant middle finger to the establishment. Trump hopefully will at least drain the swamp.
The Democrats saw Hillary as unbeatable. They though women would come out in droves to vote for her as blacks did for Obama.
Westportlad however Clinton would have been a much better president! If the events like emails or the Russia hacking never took place, then Clinton would have won by a landslide! Clinton would be like Obama’s 3rd Term!
Tamila you make no sense! She was more qualified the Trump she was Secretary of State, First of Lady, and a US senator! Trump was just a TV star and bad Business man! Clinton lost because Trump did something with Russia and swayed voters too Trump, also people wanted change but Trump is not he’s a bad president!
Tamila - yes, we all know. Per your right wing definition = literally the US is the only capitalist country, and Canada, Australia and all of Europe are communist. That's literally what u are saying. U do know that per capita GDP the US is #5 - that's right, if 5 of these other "commie" euro counties had 325M people, the us would have the 5th strongest economy. How is that even possible. These are facts (the GDP per capita) as well as the US doesn't have the most millionaires or billowing per capita - hos that also possible when these other counties are "straight up Cold War soviet communist" counties. Oh yea, and US is 11-37th in best health care, behind all the "commie universal health care counties" - you're the one who looks like the idiot. I used to b just like u, till my closest friend lived in Europe for 6 yrs and I made tons of European friends thought him and realized once they gleefully told me "u ever look at US in per capita, you're literally middle to last in everything bcuz your country is so right wing" - I did, changed parties and lived in reality, once I realized reality sucks. Because personally I'd like to b #1, and I'm pretty freaking sure "more right wing is the answer" when we are off their right-to left spectrum on the right side, I don't think more of what makes us last to middle helps. Paul Ryan was a terrible VP choice. Way too inexperienced.
Portman should've been the VP pick. I picked him when I did the 2012 election on The New Campaign Trail game and I was able to win as Romney.
How strange. I remember being a kid still in middle school just about to get out of the shower when I heard my parents cheering when Obama was elected. I think that’s the first time I was properly introduced to American politics.
I was a senior in high school during this election. Looking back, it's chilling to think this was the final gasp of the traditional GOP before Trump came in. Though when you look at archive footage like McCain shutting down a racist questioner during the 2008 election, the MAGA people were always there. Trump was just the first to openly embrace and enable them in decades.
Obama had a photo op with Louis Farrakhan that the media hid, they were right to question ol Barry.
Though I wonder if those who praise McCain and Romney now would've voted for them back in '08 and '012. Chances are, probably not.
Those that hated the traditional GOP never let that hate go. If you hated conservatives before Trump and you still do with Trump still around, it's more you than conservatives.

If he would’ve gone up against Clinton in 2016, he would’ve won big and possibly even won the popular vote in my opinion. United States would also be less divided. Romney has the moral high ground over Trump, Business sense over Obama, and less political baggage than Clinton & Biden.
That's assuming Romney knew what did and didn't work back in 2012 and learned those lessons by 2016. He would've been a great president, but how many people would've preferred him over Hillary. Plus, Republicanphobia was much more of a thing by 2016. Some of it was because of Trump, while much of it was because of the Dems shifting further left and becoming more bigoted/intolerant.
The first sentence seemed very strange. The second made everything clear
This was the most inconsequential presidential election in modern history since Romney is almost the same candidate as Obama
Maybe. But being out of office for 8-10 years, being just former governor that long (rather than just 4-5 years ago) can seem like a big gap and disadvantage, too long an absence out of office and unimpressive (in both primary and general elections) to talk about long-ago achievements even if it was previously Republican governor of blue state like Massachusetts.
Paul Ryan's face Is soooooo werid ot makes me feel soooooo scared😟😟
Bruh what?
He has the deadest eyes I’ve ever seen.
This is like saying "OrAnGeMaNbAd"
@@hansolo9585 May I introduce you to Woodrow Wilson
he was definitely the class clown
1:46 Biden has had a long habit of sniffing hair.
Yeah and the guy that's said he'll date is own daughter is much better right?
@@mrballondorkarimbenzema8328 yes he is
@@harrisonwaterhouse5051 No he's not, but as a Joe Biden supporter, the Sniffing Kids jokes are pretty funny ngl.
@@taiwandxt6493 They kinda are tbh.
@@mrballondorkarimbenzema8328 It seems like liberals will consistently refuse to face the music of something bad about a Democrat and shift the focus to a Republican. Just accept it and stop trying to switch the subject.
If there was ever a film to be made about Mitt Romney, Bruce Campbell would be the one to play him
Or maybe Mitt Romney could play him
The calm before the storm.
More like the start of the storm. 2012 was when elections became fights.
In my class mock election, I voted for mitt Romney cuz his name reminded me of ramen. I was a dumb kid
I voted Romney in my school election in 5th grade too cuz I was in Georgia and I knew he would win the state. I miss seeing Mitt Romney memes back then
This is the first election I participated in a way. When this was going on, Nickelodeon did an election thingy for kids to vote between Obama or Rommney on their website and annouce the winner on the channel. I don't remember who I voted for but it doesn't matter since they announce Obama's victory from their polls and the real polls. Did anyone else rememeber that? Did Nick do that again for 2016 and 2020? I swear 2012 was like the last normal election year!
Dont know if they did it for 2020 but know they did it in 2016, as well as every other election since I think 1996
2008 was the last normal election year. 2012 wasn't pretty. It was normal compared to the last 2 elections, but 2012 was far from normal.
THATS ME
SOMEBODY WITH A JOE BIDEN PROFILE PIC RESPOND NOW. I WILL DELETE THIS ONCE SOMEBOY DOES IT
@Ringsofearth No
@Ringsofearth correction trump is

I love the last few episodes of this series because they have songs I remember.
My first U.S. presidential election as a U.S. naturalized citizen! 🇺🇸
César Augusto congratulations!
@@Voluntas-Club Thank you!
Congratulations! Hope you like it here!
I loved discovering this channel. I hope you make a new series of videos or something regarding presidents. I'm currently undecided on who to vote for but my vote doesn't really matter bc I live in NY which is Hillary territory
Might as well "waste" it on a third party candidate, then. :) Glad you discovered my channel!
