@@rougelazer8278 You probably already know what happened. In October of ’67 McCain was himself still a Young Voter and flying his 23rd Vietnam combat mission and his A-4 Skyhawk plane got shot down over Hanoi and he had to eject, which basically means setting off an explosive charge that blows your seat out of the plane, which ejection broke both McCain’s arms and one leg and gave him a concussion and he started falling out of the skies right over Hanoi. Try to imagine for a second how much this would hurt and how scared you’d be, three limbs broken and falling toward the enemy capital you just tried to bomb. His chute opened late and he landed hard in a little lake in a park right in the middle of downtown Hanoi, Imagine treading water with broken arms and trying to pull the life vest’s toggle with your teeth as a crowd of Vietnamese men swim out toward you (there’s film of this, somebody had a home - movie camera, and the N.V. government released it, though it’s grainy and McCain’s face is hard to see). The crowd pulled him out and then just about killed him. U.S. bomber pilots were especially hated, for obvious reasons. McCain got bayoneted in the groin; a soldier broke his shoulder apart with a rifle butt. Plus by this time his right knee was bent 90-degrees to the side with the bone sticking out. Try to imagine this. He finally got tossed on a jeep and taken five blocks to the infamous Hoa Lo prison - a.k.a. the “Hanoi Hilton,” of much movie fame - where they made him beg a week for a doctor and finally set a couple of the fractures without anesthetic and let two other fractures and the groin wound (imagine: groin wound) stay like they were. Then they threw him in a cell. Try for a moment to feel this. All the media profiles talk about how McCain still can’t lift his arms over his head to comb his hair, which is true. But try to imagine it at the time, yourself in his place, because it’s important. Think about how diametrically opposed to your own self-interest getting knifed in the balls and having fractures set without painkiller would be, and then about getting thrown in a cell to just lie there and hurt, which is what happened. He was delirious with pain for weeks, and his weight dropped to 100 pounds, and the other POWs were sure he would die; and then after a few months like that after his bones mostly knitted and he could sort of stand up they brought him in to the prison commandant’s office and offered to let him go. This is true. They said he could just leave. They had found out that McCain’s father was one of the top-ranking naval officers in the U.S. Armed Forces (which is true - both his father and grandfather were admirals), and the North Vietnamese wanted the PR coup of mercifully releasing his son, the baby-killer. McCain, 100 pounds and barely able to stand, refused, The U.S. military’s Code of Conduct for Prisoners of War apparently said that POWs had to be released in the order they were captured, and there were others who’d been in Hoa Lo a long time, and McCain refused to violate the Code. The commandant, not pleased, right there in the office had guards break his ribs, rebreak his arm, knock his teeth out. McCain still refused to leave without the other POWs. And so then he spent four more years in Hoa Lo like this, much of the time in solitary, in the dark, in a closet-sized box called a “punishment cell.” Maybe you’ve heard all this before; it’s been in umpteen different media profiles of McCain. But try to imagine that moment between getting offered early release and turning it down. Try to imagine it was you. Imagine how loudly your most basic, primal self-interest would have cried out to you in that moment, and all the ways you could rationalize accepting the offer. Can you hear it? It so, would you have refused to go? You simply can’t know for sure. None of us can. It’s hard even to imagine the pain and fear in that moment, much less know how you’d react. But, see, we do know how this man reacted. That he chose to spend four more years there, in a dark box, alone, tapping code on the walls to the others, rather than violate a Code. Maybe he was nuts. But the point is that with McCain it feels like we know, for a proven fact, that he’s capable of devotion to something other, more, than his own self-interest.
@@sims2lovealot it would be different if he came back to help americans as a politician but he actually hurt them quite a bit in his career, he was in favor of mass amnesty which hurts millions of Americans who had to now compete with these new citizens, he also fought against repealing Obamacare which was against his voters interests. Also held his senate seat hostage.
I remember dropping everything and rushing to watch this live on TV on election night of 2008. This is one of my best memories from election night 2008, and I'm watching it now for the first time in twelve years. I see I remembered this all very accurately. This concessions speech shows us what our country used to be, especially when individuals like John McCain were around. I saw John McCain fall ill, publish his last memoir which he wrote knowing his time was limited, and ultimately pass away. In his last TV interview McCain was optimistic, saying that he was an "an 81 year old man who was blessed to have had such a great and fortunate life." It doesn't get any more humble and admirable than that, especially considering the hell he went through for 7 years as a POW in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton." His conduct as a POW was astonishingly courageous and admirable, especially when he rejected an offer to be released in a POW exchange, standing by the old military saying, "first one in, first one out." McCain was a true gentleman all throughout his fascinating and historically significant life, and his passing was a loss to our country regardless of your political opinions. I was saddened and insulted as an American that Trump did not visit John McCain's casket, though I'm sad to say, I wasn't surprised. But what I found most impressive and reflective of McCain's personality was the fact that he asked his former political opponent in the 2000 Presidential election primary, President George W. Bush, and his former opponent in the 2008 Presidential election, President Barack Obama, to read his eulogy. May you rest in peace, John Sidney McCain III.

"We are fellow Americans, and no association has ever meant more to me than that". Great words, from a great man.
I got tears in my eyes, what a true American. His voice is commanding, kind, and earnest. We need a man like him guiding the GOP out of this darkness. God bless John McCain & God bless America! HARRIS/WALZ 2024 get out & vote people!
This is what a true Patriot looks like. God bless your soul. RIP
I disagreed with his viewpoints but his behavior is that of a real man, a real leader.
Right or Left, this man is a true hero, he could see the bigger picture.
Thank you for that great video. He was a great man and would have been a great President.
To rephrase McCain: All true Americans are proud of their citizenship and democracy. Every vote counts.
McCain knew from the start of the race that it would take a miracle to win, and he consciously decided to run the race in a dignified and honorable way. It got ugly at times, and that's fine, but he refused to sink to the depths to which so many in his party tried to drag him. His arguments with Obama were over policy, not character. Though I did not agree with his positions, I know that McCain genuinely believed that he was working to improve the US.
What a complete gentleman, respectful and gracious. Everyone could learn from this man.
A part of American decent and honor died along with John McCain. What a man.
When McCain passed away. He took the gop with it. RIP
It’s amazing how much US politics has devolved from that time, from calm and intelligent clashes and humility in defeat to people thinking they gotta hate the person who doesn’t align with their political following and finding every reason to do so
Clinton vs Bush was also bad. Really bad.
John mcCain was a one of the last decent men in the Republican Party, honest men of integrity are severely needed
I have to be honest, this is probably the best concession speech I've ever heard. I've got mad respect for John McCain.
This is what true patriotism looks and feels like.
Legendary speech and with no script this is how is done.
Trump always insulted McCain but his ghost got the last laugh when AZ went blue
And John Lewis is laughing right alongside him from a Democratic Georgia!
Hey, maybe if the judges throw out all of Trump's stupid lawsuits, we can say that it's the spirit of RBG getting in a good kick. She certainly deserves one.
Right he was insulting McCain before 2016 and it went red the first time. The 2nd time some Dead people came back from the graves and voted for alzheimer's Biden.
@@austin4688 Lol found another one! How's alternate reality going? Cindy McCain actively campaigned for Biden and told the people of Arizona not to vote for Trump cause of what a loser he is.
Is it stressful seeing conspiracies everywhere that dont exist? We debunked the dead people voting thing like three weeks ago. Keep up.

Yes, Bush Jr term should have been McCain's term 100 %
Bush wasn't a good president but he's a very likable person, just not as a president lol.
His biggest mistake was to select Sarah Palin as his running mate.
To be honest, he needed the reach towards his partiy extreme. If anything he failed because his moral standard was too high. In the 21st century you don't get to suceed as a republican without at least courting the fascist-esque element.
Yep. I was undecided among the 2. But when Mc Cain picked Palin for his running mate, he lost my vote .
Sorry Sen. Mc Cain. But your concession speech made me proud for my choice with your strong support.
RIP.
@@youwill4588 Honestly, Obama is a great personality but he failed in the most fundomental way in that he gave the bankers a free pass and approved if not spearheaded massive bank bailouts. We could have a new "new deal" but instead we had the beggining of our brave new world of unimaignable income inequality and all that comes with it. However, to say that the republican side would not have done the same or worse is just nonsense.
@@willnash7907 You do realize that George W. Bush signed the bank bailout into law during 2008 right? It was the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.
Yes, he admitted it that was the worst mistake he had done. He also said he was forced by his campaign committee to accept the selection of Sara Palin they picke for him as his runing mate. Lo and behold, as John McCain suspect, she turned out to be an empty headed accidental governor who had never heard of the ocurance of the Two World Wars & she also used to think Africa was a single country not a continent of 54 countries. Well, then too many things she didn't know & was so difficult where to start to teach her in that short period of time. And The rest is history!!
This man will live so long even after his death.....this speech inspires me to the bone, every time I listen to it, and imagine the miraculous day I'll hear an African Presidential competitor speak such of the other.
A fine man. God Bless this outstanding American 🇺🇸.
I am moved to tears by his humility and sincerity. He was a GREAT man. RIP JOHN.
"I like people that weren't captured!"
Trump talking about John McCain who served in the US military with dignity.
Just one of the disgraceful things Trump has said :-(

His nickname was "songbird" McCain because of how he ratted out his fellow armymen, look it up! Not a great character.
@@rougelazer8278 www.snopes.com/fact-check/was-sen-john-mccain-a-hanoi-hilton-songbird/
@@rougelazer8278 how about you try being in the situations he was and then get back to us about how noble and self sacrificing you were
@@sims2lovealot it would be different if he came back to help americans as a politician but he actually hurt them quite a bit in his career, he was in favor of mass amnesty which hurts millions of Americans who had to now compete with these new citizens, he also fought against repealing Obamacare which was against his voters interests. Also held his senate seat hostage.
I remember dropping everything and rushing to watch this live on TV on election night of 2008. I remember being moved by this concession speech as I watched it, which I though showed the good character and personality of John McCain.
A gentleman, a man of honour, both virtues and characters Trump has no idea about.
Why would trump concede when court proceedings are still in place? There's already 2 states doing a recound and full audit so the elections not over yet...
It's such a damn shame, that on this day we need to look 12 years into the past - to find an honorable Republican leader, that lived up to that moniker.
How he stopped his voters from booing and at the same time gave a very amazing reason to why he(Obama) deserved to win. And to remind people what America is. A land of opportunity and land of the free.
Class act. The crowd went from booing to clapping. A man with true influence, class, and dignity. Incredibly well done
