In his extraordinarily graceful eulogy, Barack Obama demonstrates what it means to respect and admire a political opponent while at the same time disagreeing with him. I'm a lifelong Democrat, but I am very sorry there are no John McCains left among us. He was a tower of decency whose like, I fear, we will not see again.

What a wonderful eulogy. If you are truly a patriot, you know that we are all on the same team. The fact that McCain asked Obama to deliver his eulogy tells us all what we need to hear, that we who love our country may disagree in the minutia of policy, but we are brothers and sisters who share this wonderful inheritance.

I met McCain and his wife back in 2008 he changed my hole outlook on him and his family .Let's just say he showed me a lot about hi. And I have the utmost respect for McCain I spent 4 days with him.

Obama is the finest orator of our time. Quite apart from the decency, respect and affection he showed towards a political opponent, this was a masterclass in public speaking. The substance of the speech, the pace and (most importantly) the pauses are close to perfection.
I am painfully aware of my shortcomings when benchmarked against leaders like Obama, makes you wonder how they evolved to such greatness. Both men qere in fact amazing. From Europe.
President Obama is a master of communication. he is a brilliant orator, with his way to respectfully say things with a sense of humor in John McCain's eulogy. he has an excellent command of the English language for sure. even though they were fierce rivals for the Presidency. this shows that they had a great deal of respect for each other. and that's how it should be after all.
To be fair most of this speech would have been written for him. He would have made additions himself. They all have professional speech writers. His delivery is what sets him apart. Like Bill Clinton he is a brilliant orator.

I was going through my phone and came upon the funeral for John McCain 2 years ago where former president Obama was giving the eulogy. These were two men from two different political parties yet they have so much respect for each other. If we had men and women who treated each other with love respect, kindness and compassion by putting their differences aside,the world would have been a better place for all of us.

First of all I'm a black Democrat. I served in my states national guard. But I have profound respect for Senator McCain. His story is as patriotic as any story in American history. Being a p.o.w. and persevering through that making it, back home, and continued to serve his country honorably. He's a true treasure. He was a fair man. I was going through my phone and came upon the funeral for John McCain 2 years ago where former president Obama was giving the eulogy. These were two men from two different political parties yet they have so much respect for each other. If we had men and women who treated each other with love respect, kindness and compassion by putting their differences aside,the world would have been a better place for all of us.
These two men didn't have important differences because they spelled their parties differently. The world is rapidly coming to precisely what they worked for - Totalitarianism. Enjoy your New World Order. I am not with you on this.
They may have respected each other, but they failed to share it with the rest of us.

@@bigverybadtom Actually, they weren't required to "gift" us anything. As adults, we as individuals should apply critical thinking skills when we make our choices to behave in certain ways. It's called "freedom of choice" and "personal responsibility". Adults shouldn't need to rely on other people when they make decisions or blame others for their failures.
It made me tear up how even in this difficult and heartbreaking time that President Obama brought laughter and smiles to the McCain family. To see them smile was hope that life goes on, but not without the wonderful memories of Senator John McCain.
God bless the mccain family. Such wonderful people and John was a real class act.

This is statesmanship. This is a Democrat leader giving the eulogy for a former Republican leader, once opponents for President of the United States. Do you realize how powerful this is? Treating all people fairly is representing the character of America is how President Obama described John McCain. “The spirit of striving to be better, to do better ...” above party lines. This is why children could have aspired to become President of the United States. No one is perfect, you can only strive to be the best you can be and to help bring out the best in others to achieve the best outcome for all. Let you without sin cast the first stone

I watched this live and seeing it again years later, I'm still amazed at the eloquence and respect of this speech. That little chuckle shared by George W Bush and Michelle is heartwarming.

First of all I'm a black Democrat. I served in my states national guard. But I have profound respect for Senator McCain. His story is as patriotic as any story in American history. Being a p.o.w. and persevering through that making it, back home, and continued to serve his country honorably. He's a true treasure. He was a fair man. Never lost sight that we are all on the same team. I wish there were more Republicans like him.

I am just now listening to this after all these years and it is a wonderful and kind tribute. Even more important that they were political opponents AND friends!
Friends would be a hell of a stretch. They were simply united on the fact that they both wanted America to be the best nation it could be, and they both understood that. They simply differed in how to go about that.

I remember the first time I heard President Obama do a speech the year before he ran for President. , I was so impressed how eloquently he spoke. I said to my father this man is going to be our president one day. I am so proud to say I had the honor to work on his campaign when I lived in Wisconsin. Watching this tribute to Senator McCain is exactly why John McCain asked president Obama to speak at his funeral. Because he would honor the hero Senator McCain was. 🙏❤️🙏
