2022 and people are still surprised slipknot has clean choruses, at least the chorus in hivemind wasn't some weird happy chorus, was kind of darkish still, I liked it
I think the reason these songs aren't hitting hard anymore is because Cory had legit hate when he recorded Iowa and I think he's let a lot of that go and it shows in his vocals. It seems as though he can't channel that anger anymore
Although I find some merit to this opinion, perhaps that's just the artwork's context seeping into your perception. Like, imo, the musicianship is perhaps better than ever for new slipknot, but once a band does a certain style for such a long time, the shock value that self titled and Iowa had just inevitably fade.
He can't and he don't wanna hit that anger, the guy is in a good life now, he already surpassed those traumatic events and pain, but that's why the album sounds so cringe, it's a simulation of someone who still feel that anger.
I'm on board with you Drew, I appreciate them trying to take it a different direction but I don't think it fits Corey. I was a huge fan of We Are Not Your Kind and I was pumped to see them keep heading in that direction, especially with the early drops from the album. When I heard Adderall as the opening track I got super nervous and felt a little let down. Corey is an absolute legend but something about his cleans definitely feel off with me this album, which is strange because he had great cleans on their previous album in songs like Unsainted and Not Long For This World. Dying Song, Chapeltown and Yen are solid, but as you keep progress through the album it seems to me the songs become less memorable. Maybe that will change with more listens but I don't feel myself getting drawn back to it. If you look at the album on Spotify, each song has progressively less and less streams, which leads me to believe most other listeners feel the same. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm leaning toward team cringe on this one. I HOPE that changes but that's my current feelings!
I think Adderall is the only song that really connected with me. I didn’t have any hope from the singles. Chapeltown Rag is in the running for one of the worst Slipknot songs to me. The lyrics are awfully written IMO. Power to those to really like this album. Since it’s Slipknot I wish I could feel the same. But major letdown after WANYK. Hearing the way Jim Root and Clown described the process of making this album really makes sense. Unpolished, rushed, and lacking a creative direction, mostly due to Covid restrictions. When the artists themselves don’t feel great about it, it’s definitely a recipe for a product that’s lacking.
Personally to me this album is still solid. If I had to give it a /10 it’s probably 7-8/10 tbh. I’m gonna have to agree with the clean vocals being somewhat forced.
Comes across as a bit disjointed and safe at times but still an enjoyable record. WANYK was melodically creative and texturally rich in ways that they never really explored on their other records. This one is a bit stiff melody-wise and lacks the cohesion of WANYK but again, still an enjoyable record.
It's very much a thing a personal preference but Corrie's singing is great imo. Loved every bit of Corrie's voice on WANYK. Heirloom is the only track I didn't really like from a melodic standpoint.
I think a lot of that was because of the problems they had with covid and everything meaning there was no preproduction for the album. With that I think it would have been a rich as the last album
I can see it being a grower on people. Its like any album with diverse songs that are not what you initially expect or perhaps want. Albums in general can take time to grow, adapt to ya as time, experience goes on. I love it when , even after the first few days an album isnt hitting you, but then without trying to like it, it just moves into view and life more. I like the clean vocals, as they remind me a tad of the Grunge era, which is where I started waaay back.😅😅🤘 This album will defo polarise people and maybe thats a good ting. I think that if it was all balls out blastorama, youd still get people saying "Nah, theyre trying too hard to sound like Iowa".😅 It mite not be what everyone wants but at least too, its not what everyone predicts.
Iv'e always appreciated their more experimental side as it adds a nice, somewhat twisted side to the usual barrage of attacking riffs. With this, Im enjoying and involving myself more into the alternative, tangent throwing tracks. Acidic, Yen, De Sade and especially Finale are bloody fecking good songs. They've got interesting passages of music and cool ideas twirling around and keeping me involved. I think the more standard Slipknot songs work here too, even if they sound a bit by the numbers initially. But again, people will prolly want more of that. Those that want Iowa revisited will be dissapointed, but they've been there, done that regarding that extremity. I thought We are not yer Kind was their best album meself. Great comments and ongoing analysis as the music went on.
I agree with you on this album. Lots of people are saying they shouldn’t go back to Iowa level heavy because of how bad the recording session was but they can still be heavy without hurting their relationship. I don’t even know I just want another Iowa album. Might sound cliché
They’re definitely pushing in a new direction. With Corey’s cleans I like them some of the time but I definitely agree with you on how it’s used a little too much. Jim Root was also talking about how he felt this album wasn’t as good as they could’ve made it because of covid restrictions on the song writing process. He described it as messy because of this which you can definitely hear in the songs. It doesn’t feel as tight as We Are Not Your Kind felt
I would call myself a diehard Slipknot fan, and I agree. From what members (mainly Jim and Corey) have said in various interviews as well as Corey's Reddit AMA conducted around the time of The End, So Far's release, that it isn't an album representative of the band's A game. The band was constantly getting fucked by Roadrunner in regards to when they wanted the album out. At first, they wanted the band to take their time (as Slipknot usually does), but then Roadrunner wanted the band to crank the album out as quick as they could. This prompted the band to book a ton of studio time to record what songs they had finished writing, but then Roadrunner told them to take their time again, further delaying recording and releasing the album of unpolished and roughly arranged songs that could have been tightened up, polished, and given the once over by the band to make them sound as entertaining, unique, and as kick-ass as we all know they can be. The End, So Far is a very good album and is not bad by any measure. It just isn't the wall-to-wall masterpiece that We Are Not Your Kind is.
Your reaction to Hive Mind was me exactly while I was washing dishes with the headphones in. Jamming so hard, scrubbing so hard and then... singing. The hurricane came through the same time the album released. It was going to be the soundtrack for Ian, but failed. But Im still kinda vibin' to it?. I think.
Your comments were spot on. I’m 50 years old. The first slipknot album changed my life. One of the top 10 best things I ever heard but your breakdown of how they sorta do the cleans and try to pop it up overtime work perfect and true
The strength of WANYK was that it was a cohesive whole. One song flowed into the next and each song played a role. That made up for some of the weaker tracks. This album just feels like a bunch of disconnected songs. Which is fine in theory but just doesn’t work. My general reaction to this album is “ehh.” No tracks that really stand out to me. And definitely forcing the clean vocals at this point. Edit: from the comments it’s interesting that this seems to be so polarizing. Not one thing about this album is cohesive to me. There’s a harsh break between each song.
I think exactly the opossite lol WANYK didn't have a cohesive estructure for me, specially bc of those strange bridge songs and the fact that they mixed clean with screams in a more "common" way. On the other hand, TESF does have that flow between songs that you can actually hear and think about how they progress, specially with those clean vocal songs(Dunoo why you are saying they feel forced, I think they sound pretty well placed this time since they built the songs around them, like in the first Slipknot albums). That being said, I do enjoy WANYK more that TESF and I Agree that this album doesn't really have a song that stands out tooo much (I mean, yeah they have the singles that are pretty good, and H377 or De Sade/Finale are really good songs that are going to be remembered well in the future, but they don't have a Solway Firth or Nero Forte or A Liar's Funeral).
Same. I feel like this dude is apart of the metal scene just enough to know all the tropes and whatnot, so when he hears the choruses he cringes to appeal to the “hardcore” Slipknot fans. But the choruses are fucking amazing
I like this album but if I had to rank every album, it would 100% be at the bottom of the list. The singles hyped me up because I loved them and I hoped the rest of the album would be on a similar level, the only songs that were highlights for me apart from the singles were H377, Medicine For the Dead and De Sade. That being said, I tolerate the rest of the tracks and go through the entire album without skipping. Overall, decent but could've been way better.
Its kind of underwhelming compared to "We are not your kind" especially the recording quality but its quite enjoyable. I wouldn't call it cringe though besides maybe some chorus.
I find it interesting that you dislike Corey’s cleans so much bc I love them. I will say I don’t like it as much on songs like hivemind on this album, but songs like Unsainted… I think it’s amazing
I’m just curious what about Corey’s cleans do you not like? He’s got an amazing voice (in my opinion of course) do you not like his voice at all or just not in a heavy song.
Big Slipknot fan here, been to many shows, have all albums. I'm so glad someone shares my view on recent Slipknot's albums. With the last one everyone seemed to love it and I just couldn't see (or hear) it. This is the same! I cringe so much when I see lazy reviews that say "slipknot is going back to the roots". Again?? Love the review! No need to please anyone.
I really liked WAYNK, not because of specific songs but because it felt like a cohesive whole. This one I share your sentiment with. Disjointed and lacking in all departments.
I've definitely grown out of slipknot but I'll probably bump a couple of these tracks. Maybe now that they're off the record label they'll make something good. Wishful thinking probably.
Between .5 The Gray Chapter, We Are Not Your Kind and The End So Far i preffer the first one. The last two albums a have been meh tier albums. I'm a huge Slipknot fan, but they're lacking something lately.
I think it's the emotion. Slipknot's older music ranged from several topics. Topics such as the music industry, necrophilia, abuse, politics, war, grief, getting into the mind of a serial killer, depression, suicide and a whole bunch of other messed up topics. All which gave a sense of fear, chaos, insanity, melancholy and rage. We Are Not Your Kind is simply about one thing. Corey's divorce from Stephanie Luby which he shares a daughter with btw so that makes the whole thing not only petty but morally fucked on top of that. Mainly since it puts pressure on his child who he apparently hardly sees. Take of that what you will. With The End So Far, there's nothing here and it feels like a filler album. There's no anger, no sadness etc. Yeah sure there's a bit of commentary on about how social media is dividing us and how the media distorts the truth but those ideas have been tackled in metal constantly for the past couple of years. Disturbed and Five Finger Death Punch were touching on those subjects prior to this album's release. It's not necessarily a new or original idea in terms of song writing.
This is my first video I've seen of yours and I was initially turned off from it because the title said you were cringing to slipknot; although, you articulated your review really well and I understand where you're coming from with the cleans take. They're not for everyone just as the whole genre is subjective to your taste. I don't like them when I feel they feel forced, but I've been really VIBING to this album, so far. Really appreciate your honesty towards it and hearing your thoughts on the album! I liked this video format too, good shit. Also, saw a lot of comments saying this album is a grower, and I 100% agree. Give it a couple listens and those cleans might grow on ya
I’m in the same camp with this. I appreciate your honesty. It’s how we get the best from everyone. I also feel the same about the clean vocal parts. It seems like it has to be in every song and I really wish it was less.
they are old, rich and don't owe us anything. they aren't going to make another IOWA and that's okay. they still have some heavy stuff in their discography. I appreciated a lot of the choices in this album. but some of these did feel pretty forgettable or dragged down by the clean chorus. I thought 8 to 9 of the 12 were okay.
I totally get what you mean by the 50/50 cringe enjoyment thing. For me I think its just Corey Taylors delivery. The band is playing their asses off all across this thing but Corey's vocals just feel so miss matched at to many points.
I like heavy throughout, with a softer finish, which is why i think Finale is such a great ending track, still I really like Adderall even though it isnt slipknot
I disagree sorry, constant death growls and screaming just becomes tiresome I actually like Corey's singing voice and appreciate the fact they write more melodic choruses nowadays. They are maximising their talent and finally write songs with meaningful lyrics instead endless swearing, they are writing the music of mature men not angry adolesecents. Corey might be a tamed beast but he is still a beast all the same!
I like both, I’m kinda disappointed there isn’t a lot of heavy songs but if I want that I’ll just listen to suicide silence or something. I do love this album though.
I found that this album is definitely something you have to listen to more than once to make a final opinion on it. I listened to some of the songs and didn’t like them for the first time but by the third or fourth time I started to enjoy it. Idk most of the album had that effect on me
I really like the album and I respect people that don’t like it specially because of the clean vocal I’m just a little bias since I loved slipknot, but I understand when people call cringe especially in hive mind, I like the song but I’m also not a fan of the chorus, I still think is a good album, the dying song, yen, warranty and h377 are probably my favorites.
this album is the epitome of "so close yet so far" it has some seriously fucking amazing parts in it, and then those amazing parts can be ruined by a sub par chorus or musical arrangement, ive never had a big problem with the clean vocals, if done right it can be good, but thats the problem, in a lot of spots it very much isnt, the vocals can seem like a huge contrast to the rest of the song, the album grows on you a lot once you start understanding what the intention was, but that still doesnt make it any less confusing, and with them going with no label here on out, im slightly worried that the next album will be that but even more, we will have to see
My thoughts exactly. The clean parts of these songs all feel like different songs thrown in the middle of a different song. Like boom heavy riff and then super autotuned clean pink floyd Like vocals suddenly. It has just pulled me out of so many of the songs.
@@jackalthakomodo5257 id rather they keep the clean stuff to the songs that should have them such as finale, and Adderall, because they arent heavy songs, but something like say hive mind? the super clean vocals dont work, now, just imagine a hive mind chorus with the typical heavy vocals it had around the chorus, would have been pretty awesome i think
@@jackalthakomodo5257 and another thing, this album instrumentally is very good, but with 90% of corey's vocals sounding like they should be on a stone sour album instead of slipknot really hurts it
The End, So Far Songs Ranked (Worst to Best) 12. Acidic 11. Heirloom 10. The Chapeltown Rag 9. H377 8. Medicine for the Dead 7. Hive Mind 6. Finale 5. De Sade 4. Adderall 3. Warranty 2. The Dying Song 1. Yen
I think this is their worst output to date, and i've been feeling like this since "dying song" dropped. This album feels like a compilation of ideas that no one bothered to polish at all, the mix is absolute garbage, guitar solos on this album just sounds funny to me. But because of the fact, that this is their last "roadrunner era" album, im curious what they're going to come up with next time, 'couse if this wasn't just a "last glimpse of slipknot we all now" then i don't think that this band gonna put out something worthy listening. Really hope that they're going into completely different direction then just continue to copy paste their old stuff. Intro and outro tracks are bangers tho Great reaction Drew😚
Honestly I'm just tired of Slipknot sounding like metal musical theater lol. When I got into Slipknot, they weren't as theatrical as they are today. Yes they've always had masks but I always felt like they served a purpose and those purposes being to envoke fear, disturb, disgust and expressing anger in a artistic manner. Nothing about recent Slipknot has the emotional impact I get when I listen to All Hope Is Gone, Iowa, Self Titled, Vol. 3 and .5: The Gray Chapter.
With all due respect to Slipknot, they went from an aggressive, creepy, and disturbing metal band with music that portrayed a sense of anger and melancholy, to a band that isn't even remotely creepy anymore and is basically a pop metal act at this point. Another downside to me is that it's felt more about the theatrics recently and less about the music. I'm sure a lot of that is influenced by Clown.
I think it's a solid album, probably because I've bummed slipknot since 07 though. I can still safely admit though it does seem they're at a point where they can't seem to get out of this sound that people aren't particularly liking since wanyk. Maybe it was something to do with roadrunners contract and what not, I'm probably completely wrong, maybe they'll go back to their routes when they release their next album :) I like Corey's cleans I'm surprised people don't, always thought people did since alot of people loved snuff back in the day.
Yeah, never got into Slipknot. They were too hardcore when I started listening to rock/metal. I slept on them for a decade. And now they’re not hardcore enough lol. Went from Foo Fighters to Meshuggah and missed them on the way.
I agree 100% I know Corey is a iconic singer and with Iowa one of the best vocals ever on a metal record and I even loved the first few stone sour records but lately his vocals are just not sounding good..his melody chorus and overall sound I don't know if I'm over it or if he's changed
I hope some day you will react to Katatonia -The Great Cold Distance Album. Its one of my favourites in terms of vibe, feel and sound (also vocals are very good). Very underrated band i havent seen them to be popular for some reason because this album is gold. Its not heavy in terms of metal its closer to Deftones but without this deftony in your face and uncomfy stuff ( without sound design basicaly in vocals). Not asking for a video i just hope you will at least check them out.
Really refreshing to find some actual criticism on the album! ^^, so far it's either "love it because it's Slipknot" Or hate it "because it's not Iowa", and even tho i love it myself, i have to agree it's mid. Either way great video
I think the main issue for me is the guitars. I like what’s actually being played but the tone really doesn’t do much for me and the guitars are just a tiny bit too quiet at points
Not like the physical bass being played but the bass in general, it sounds like it's coming through a mid cars speaker's regardless of what you're listening to it from.
I 100% agree with you. Except, I will take it a step further and say that Corey's vocals ruin this entire album for me. I like The Dying Song and Yen a lot. Outside of that, I can't stand his vocals. There are tracks where he's kicking major ass but just can't help himself and throws in those Stone Sour stadium pop vocals, and it just kills the vibe of the song. It actively makes me angry listening to this album because it has the potential to be great. The instrumentals are awesome in most songs, but his cleans fucking ruin it. And I'm not a hater of cleans or his cleans in general. But his delivery here fucking sucks ass.
I don't get why some people are still expecting everything they make to try and be more intense than Iowa. Like thats probably their heaviest work, and possibly their best work. However, musicians evolve, get bored, and like experimenting because its fun. Im a massive fan of more experimental songs like vermillion, til we die, and adderall. However, there's fans that say "thats not slipknot" purely because the songs are better constructed than they used to be and arent complete chaos the whole time. Im not saying that that's your sentiment, because it didn't seem like you came across like that. Anyways, 8.5-9/10 album for me, i vibed thoroughly
Adderall gave me crackhead vibe De Sade, is like If Rain Is What You Want but on beast mode Warranty, the chorus reminds me of every Disturbed songs Hivemind, I give it an eh chorus Yen, will forever be remembered because I really like that breakdown and it’s in Drop A with Sid’s turntable Heirloom, “secret unreleased” Stone Sour song
We essentially had the exact same reaction to this album particularly the cleans, since listening to it a good 6 or 7 times I've realised the first half is great, the mid after Medicine for the dead is 👎 and H377 onwards is also great but also when I say great I don't mean Slipknot great, this is probably their most mid album to date but nonetheless the songs considering they were recorded for the most part in isolation during covid came out a little better than I thought but not exactly to the knots standard it's after some listens a good 6.5 to 7 out of 10
how could some people like vol 3 and dislike the end so far? For me it DOESN'T MAKE SENSE. Corey SINGS in CHORUSES since EVER, and particularily on Vol 3
Slipknot is my favorite band and a lot of this seems busy and the formula they always follow is running ragged. They can still do it, but the choruses are just saying the weirdest things. It's like they force it in specifically to follow the formula. To me, the most appealing things on this album is when they changed pace. Also, I think Coreys voice is mostly fine, they just apply it to awful things.
I think some of the production elements is really interesting, like the electric elements, the choirs, but I'm not going to lie I am getting really tired of the clean choruses, they start to sound samey, I do like de sade's, the dying song's and yen's. Overall it's a pretty okay album
I actually really like the more atypical (for them) sounding songs. Sounds like they were actually playing what they felt like playing. But most of the “heavy” songs are paint-by-numbers post Paul and Joey Slipknot that we’ve been hearing for years now. It sounds try hard and just like they’re trying to maintain a brand. Also, why do they insist on over-producing Corey’s clean vocals all to hell? He’s a great singer and doesn’t need that, it just sounds sterile and boring. Clean parts in Slipknot songs didn’t use to sound like that. But, whatever. I liked half the album. Also, I think you’re spot on about Corey being a bit out of touch, he writes some really cringey lyrics at this point. Actually, he wrote some bad lyrics back in the day as well but it worked better with their vibe back then. But now it mostly just feels like something he should’ve grown out of by now.
When did this narrative of Corey being a terrible songwriter come from? He’s usually great to me the lyrics on vol 3 still impress me esp with no cursing
@@romaretaylor9953 I wouldn’t call it a narrative, that was just my opinion. I also wouldn’t call him a bad songwriter, he’s written plenty of fantastic songs in his career (And I agree about his lyrics on Vol 3, they were great). But a lot of (Not all, again), but a lot of the lyrics from him that I’ve heard in the past couple years just haven’t really done it for me, and especially on a song like Chapeltown Rag that just kinda sound lame to me. And as far as back in the day goes, there were some lyrics off of self titled and Iowa that straight up sounded like and angry middle schooler scribbling in a notebook. Again though, it worked with the vibe they had at the time and I still love those songs.
Slipknot is one of those that they never had the opportunity to try some experimentation in its music, and that's exactly why it sounds more weird than it should be
i like the album and i can see what you mean by the way it sounds in some songs ,even jim root was giving this album heavy unhappy with it vibes because he mentioned they didnt do any more pre production at all with this album, its like an album tour drop album to keep the fans happy ina way ,but good review of it
I really apreciated their new approach and I hope they keep it this way, it reminded me of their self titled album. I don't want an IOWA part 2, these times have passed
@Eikuza Think you need to lower your expectations if that's the case. Corey did an AMA on Reddit and he answered a question which asked him how the production of the album was. He replied that it was disjointed due to COVID and personal stuff. So I think that it's a decent album in light of the circumstances
I love this album and the fact they are reinventing themselves on every album. This one is amazing, it has harder songs, softer bits, harsh vocals, clean vocals, beautiful riffs and melodies, plus an amazing basslines. What more could one ask?
A lot of the verses feel forced and the poppy choruses, too. Seems like they rehashed nero forte and the devil in I in quite a few songs. Not disappointed in the album, but they have a lot better.
Mostly team cringe, but started to get into it once I viewed the album as a camp metal musical theater piece. Makes way more sense from that perspective, and became somewhat enjoyable. Kinda like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The cleans on this album all seem to have a doubling effect on his voice that make it sound super weird and poppy. I don't hate clean slipknot choruses, they've done it well in the past, but this album has that weird sound that really rubs me the wrong way.
My Slipknot album ranking goes like this: Iowa Slipknot We Are Not Your Kind All Hope is Gone Vol. 3 .5 The Gray Chapter For me, this album is better the AHIG, not sure if it's better the WANYK, might have to wait a bit more. But, I think this album could have easily been better than WANYK. Jim Root said that because of Covid there was basically no pre-production for the album, and they felt rushed and that they weren't able to get the best out of this album. I still really like this album. I know many purists will not because "too much melody" but I don't care about that, Corey has a killer voice both clean and harsh, why not hear both? If I can have Gojira and folk bands like Show of Hands next to each other in my playlists. I think I can handle slipknot with just a little more melody
My ranking is 1. Self Titled and Iowa 2. .5 3. Vol 3 4. AHIG 5. WANYK 6. TESF Its too hard for me to judge between ST and Iowa. I've been listening since Self Titled dropped in 99 and when Iowa came out it took a little bit to adjust but I fell in love with it. It may sound funny now but back then it felt like a huge change in sound between the two. Then when Vol 3 dropped it took even longer for me to really accept it and love it. The same can be said for every album that followed for me but all for different reasons. Unfortunately for me WANYK and now TESF just haven't had the same impact on me as the others did. I still like them I just think they're starting to lose it imo. It feels to me like Corey just isn't fully into it anymore when it comes to Slipknot. That doesn't mean he doesn't give his best at live shows but lyrically these past two albums haven't been nowhere near his strongest imo. With TESF there's like 3 or 4 songs that sound like they'd be more at home on Stone Sours House of Gold and Bone 1 and 2 and thats from someone who never liked the comparisons between the bands but starting on Critical Darling on WANYK and then these songs on TESF it sounds like that and even musically too. I'm actually a big Stone Sour fan too and love HOGAB 1 and 2 (I think its their best works other than their first album) but this is a Knot album ya know? I really love when Slipknot does their softer thing like Vermillion 1 and 2 and Yen is great but on other songs on the new album layer in it just doesn't sound like Slipknot to me and thats the first time I've ever felt that way since the beginning. It kinda saddens me. I really hope their next album is better. Although we'll probably be waiting a long while for it.
@@buddykaiser2380 that's fair. I do really like both styles of slipknot. Mostly because I can't sing harsh so I appreciate being able to sing along sometimes. I'll have to sit and think a while before I decide on Corey's lyrical strength but it didn't seem bad when I listened the first time
I respect the review I myself love the album every song and I get tired of the pop shit in metal songs I love the cleans but they have to be right I love the cleans in this album I listen to much heavier shit fit for an autopsy /Lorna shore / the acacia strain etc etc but I still love slipknot I love the review but my opinion is so different I love this it grew on me
The cleans in self titled and Iowa are so expertly inserted into the song. To the point where nobody notice them. Compare that to AOV off of .5, which is utterly jarring in comparison. Not even an attempt to blend, just type of vibes.
personally, i loved it after several listens. and now ive been putting chapters together out of the songs as to what he may be writing about. in an interview awhile back, CT said now that he got some things off of his chest with wanyk, he wanted to approach this one by trying to write from other ppls perspectives. i think that Adderall, Dying Song, Chapeltown and Yen all tell one part of the story on their own. and there are likely two other chapters told through the other 8 songs, in a way. this may or may not have anything to do with it, but Clowns one daughter died a while back during the wanyk cycle and i dont think we ever heard how and part of me wonders if he maybe lowkey made the story of the first 4 songs possibly talk about what she might have been going through and how they are all processing it now. idk. ideas.
This album is good, considering that they are already a bit older. If you want an album like Iowa or ST Corey will lose his voice or screw it up, so either we never get another album, or the album will be crap, so enjoy the new album, the new music, it's not bad, in my opinion better than the last three albums, some didn't, I hope when they release a new album that it will be better, when they are no longer in cooperation with Roadrunner Records, because I think they softened them a bit, with that exaggeration and forcing of clean singing vocals and the instrumentals are amazing, the guitars are better than the last three albums, Jim and Mick did a fantastic job, as did V man, as well as Pfaff and Clown on background vocals, the drums are great, Jay keeps getting better and better, Craig and Sid are phenomenal on this album, Corey is great with the screams as well as the clean vocals, but like you said, I feel like they're pushing it too much, and I think we need more songs on this album, maybe a 3 or 4 more
@@travisspaulding9540 in my opinion, gray have best emotions put in songs, WANYK is meh idk, it's better put together, like all songs are have better connection and It seems something is off, it misses that something, beacuse this new album is disorganized, WANYK have a little bit flat sound, but not as much as AHIG. And AHIG in my opinion have better solos, drumming, but sound is a bit flat, this album in my opinion have the purest sound of instruments and vocals out all of the last three albums, if this album didn't have this forced clean vocals and bit better and longer solos, it would be much much better, my rating is 7.5 out of 10
It's not that I want Corey too scream and ruin his voice I love his cleans when there good take any of the lead singles of all hope is gone all clean all memorable and amazing..there's none of that on this new album
@@danilomladenovic9314 i can’t believe anyone would say this is better at all. The only thing this has over WANYK is the quality of his screams and even that, it’s not by a large margin. WANYK was different without being overzealously experiential. You can’t say the same thing about this album. WANYK also had at least two songs that’ll go down as classic. I don’t believe anything on this album is even remotely memorable for the most part.
While some songs like Warranty and H377 come through, this album makes me appreciate The Grey Chapter MUCH more. So much more brutal solid across the board, this is good in its own way but apart from traditional slipknot.
My big feeling for this album is unfinished. It feels to me like the guys were like: lets put something out to finish up this contract. They should have said screw the stupid restrictions and got together to really put the time into perfecting the songs and doing some more vocal takes. It just feels to me like 3 or 4 songs would be more at home on Stone Sours House of Gold and Bone 1 and 2 and thats coming from someone who never liked the comparisons between the two bands. It always felt like Corey at least tried to separate his way of singing between Slipknot and Stone Sour but starting on Critical Darling on the last album and then the songs on here its really the same way he sang for HOGAB and while I actually really love HOGAB pts 1 and 2 I didn't buy a Stone Sour album. I bought a Slipknot album. One that for me will probably forever be their weakest. Thats not to say it's not good, its just the worse of the best. It really just feels incomplete to me. Even in the recording. It sounds like they spent almost no time on the vocals. But I will say one thing in Corey's defense. On Slipknots earlier albums (especially the first two) there's a lot of effects and track doubling +++ on Corey's vocals that make them sound even more vicious than they are. They're still sic performances on their own but when all that is added its much fuller than the newer stuff sounds. Thats not to say that there's not still some of that on the newer stuff but you can definitely tell its not nearly as prevalent. But on this new album in a lot of places his vocals are just not great in the mix imo. That and it feels like he didn't do many takes. The whole album just feels like the whole band was like eeeeh...good enough. I know Jim said pretty much that this process was just completely lacking and Shawn said he feels like this is more like releasing some songs than a official album. I really think this was just their way of finishing up their contract and they just didn't refine it nearly as much as they should and could have. The songs needed way more time to cook and be perfected. Unfortunately they did what all celebrities do and bowed to the ever lingering fear of the coof and let it get in their way. I could see if it was being made back when it first started but by the time they started making it most people are getting on with their lives and while still taking precautions they're not letting it control them like some would like.
the choruses are getting weaker and not memorable anymore, like "well, the part with melodic voice is supposed to go here, put something here" and that's it.
Yeah... I'm a massive long time Slipknot fan since I first heard their self-titled album when I was 14 years old, and this album just fell pretty flat for me. I can appreciate some of the more experimental parts and there are some moments/songs that are good at times, but overall it's one of my least favorite albums from them if not completely at the very bottom. Pretty disappointing to be honest :(
when in chapeltown rag he says "when everything is god online, nothing is" my interpretation is online we can make or break someone quick it basically has became a god in itself so knowing that now we have people who thinks their voice is the only one who should be heard unless you agree with them. when it becomes people thinking only what they want matters then nothing anybody wants matters.
I must say, if they knew how to mix their fucking music on the last 3 albums like they did with their first 2, those 3 albums would be their best pieces of art. But no, Jays kit sits so far back in the mix, the guitars have no crunch anymore… Jesus the riffs are so good but lack so much actual mastering anymore. So sad.
It's definitely quite different. But I vibe heavily to it. The only gripe I really have is that the overall mix seems a little....off to me. Some instruments don't seem to come out as well and some songs seem louder or lower than others. Am I the only one that thinks that way?
I loved the fact that you made this video with constructive criticism and giving the credit to the band where it was earned…regardless this was a good album and for a band that’s been doing this for 20+ years and still trying hard to make good music is enough credit for me 7/10 🫡🔥

2022 and people are still surprised slipknot has clean choruses, at least the chorus in hivemind wasn't some weird happy chorus, was kind of darkish still, I liked it
I don't know how people can't understand they have had clenas since the first album
@@dapaintbrush6965 yeah, I’ll admit, this isn’t my favourite slipknot album but I’m not surprised at all by the cleans
@@campar1043 its a good album. Sure it could have been better but it's still good
@@dapaintbrush6965 yup it’s a good time. But not great
on my first listen I felt exactly how the guy in this video described feeling. I liked Hivemind but the chorus really didn't land for me
I think the reason these songs aren't hitting hard anymore is because Cory had legit hate when he recorded Iowa and I think he's let a lot of that go and it shows in his vocals.
I agree and I'm happy for him but the emotion just isn't there anymore
Agreed. And, at the end of the day, who wants to be angry? Who wants to ACT angry? 😂
I’d give it a 7/10 I agree
WANYK is a masterpiece. Truly a work of art. Some many amazing breakdowns and riffs that are placed perfectly.
H377 cringe? Bruh wtf u talking about. Best track.
Yeah, that's my favourite song along with 'Medicine for The Dead'
satire?
Yes it is cringe it sounds repetitive
@@l0_pez184it's literally the best rap line and rhymes in the nu-metal world. Is not cringe

It already grew on me from Hating acidic to it being my favourite
Well said🥃
Iv'e always appreciated their more experimental side as it adds a nice, somewhat twisted side to the usual barrage of attacking riffs.
I've just been listening to it non-stop since it came out & I'm Vibing to it more than I'd like to admit
Bro the albums greats! Slipknots the best metal band of all time imo
@@freyasworld5024 Hard disagree.
@@aw_1890 yeah, it's not the best, in my opinion it's in the 4th place, just because it has better vocals than volume 3, otherwise it would be a tie
Because it’s a little more different people are gonna jump the gun on the album overall WANYK was better but this one’s growing on me!
I should follow up by saying my 11-year-old daughter thinks they’re the coolest thing in the world right now 🤘🏼
The strength of WANYK was that it was a cohesive whole.
Nah this albums flow is crazy good too
Huh weird I actually felt the opposite about we are not your kind… album feels like 8 tracks to me and I edited it down in my play list
Definitely disagree
Disagree i think it flows well I agree that WANYK is better though
Medicine for the dead really reminded me of Tool, and when you said it, I died laughing 😂. Didn't expect someone else to notice it
Hahahaha glad someone else agrees!
@@DrewFortune97 The riff reminded me if Lateralus riff, idk about you, maybe that's the reason why I liked to song so much😅
After my first listen I thought this album was mid but it’s definitely a grower. For me it’s a 7/10
Agreed
This is honestly one of my favorite Slipknot albums.
Mine too dude
Glad I’m not the only one. I really liked the grey chapter too and I feel bad for not loving the OG albums 😂
Same. I feel like this dude is apart of the metal scene just enough to know all the tropes and whatnot, so when he hears the choruses he cringes to appeal to the “hardcore” Slipknot fans. But the choruses are fucking amazing
Hivemind, Yen, Finale and chapeltown rag were my favourites of the album I'd say
Also 6:50, the song is Unsainted
Honestly this is one of my favorite albums of the year. I dont get the cringe or the hate
Honestly i feel this album was just to get there contract done with roadrunner
I’m just curious what about Corey’s cleans do you not like? He’s got an amazing voice (in my opinion of course) do you not like his voice at all or just not in a heavy song.
I think his vocals are great too
I’m just kinda bored with corey’s cleans. It just really sounds like they’re out of place
I could not agree more with everything you said. I was trying to articulate My thoughts and you did it for me. Cheers.
I've definitely grown out of slipknot but I'll probably bump a couple of these tracks. Maybe now that they're off the record label they'll make something good. Wishful thinking probably.
I have a feeling this album will grow on people like WANYK did
Most people liked wanyk straight away
This album funnily reminded me a lot of All Hope Is Gone, which is hated by many, but it's propably my all time favourite Slipknot album.
100 % agree
I like both, I’m kinda disappointed there isn’t a lot of heavy songs but if I want that I’ll just listen to suicide silence or something. I do love this album though.
Both is good
It’s not a good record.
@@LyricBossYTyes it is
I found that this album is definitely something you have to listen to more than once to make a final opinion on it.

Intro and outro tracks are bangers tho
Great reaction Drew😚
The intro and outro don’t sound anything like old slipknot but you want old slipknot? Make it make sense
If people keep comparing new slipknot to the self-titled or Iowa they will never like new slipknot.
I agree 100% I know Corey is a iconic singer and with Iowa one of the best vocals ever on a metal record and I even loved the first few stone sour records but lately his vocals are just not sounding good..his melody chorus and overall sound I don't know if I'm over it or if he's changed
I think it’s because he’s started adding a weird effect to his vocals. It’s really noticeable at the start of the dying song. It annoys me quite a bit
I am pumped for this album. I think it needs to be listened to multiple times to really get into it.

Katatonia is great. A nice mixture between heavy and melodic, depending on the album.
Totally right man. I feel like sometimes all the instrumentals are too quiet and all we get are the vocals.
The bass is WAAAAAYYY too low!
Not like the physical bass being played but the bass in general, it sounds like it's coming through a mid cars speaker's regardless of what you're listening to it from.
Nah the guitar tone is great. Same old Slipknot tone, but great as always.
Adderall gave me crackhead vibe
De Sade, is like If Rain Is What You Want but on beast mode
Warranty, the chorus reminds me of every Disturbed songs
Hivemind, I give it an eh chorus
Yen, will forever be remembered because I really like that breakdown and it’s in Drop A with Sid’s turntable
Heirloom, “secret unreleased” Stone Sour song
Cringing and vibing with this album is possibly the best description imo for the experience the album creates
Honnestly the album already grow up on me
I think some of the production elements is really interesting, like the electric elements, the choirs, but I'm not going to lie I am getting really tired of the clean choruses, they start to sound samey, I do like de sade's, the dying song's and yen's.
Slipknot is one of those that they never had the opportunity to try some experimentation in its music, and that's exactly why it sounds more weird than it should be
Check out Korn’s newer release(s)
While you’re at it, check out Tallah. They are a band you don’t want to sleep on
Hang on...haven't been to this channel in quite a while. When did you start liking growls over cleans? Last I checked it was the other way around 🤔😂
i like the album and i can see what you mean by the way it sounds in some songs ,even jim root was giving this album heavy unhappy with it vibes because he mentioned they didnt do any more pre production at all with this album, its like an album tour drop album to keep the fans happy ina way ,but good review of it
I really apreciated their new approach and I hope they keep it this way, it reminded me of their self titled album. I don't want an IOWA part 2, these times have passed
new approach? every song since 5 sounded the same lol
@@DigitalBath306 you need new ears then
@Eikuza please explain
@Eikuza Think you need to lower your expectations if that's the case. Corey did an AMA on Reddit and he answered a question which asked him how the production of the album was. He replied that it was disjointed due to COVID and personal stuff. So I think that it's a decent album in light of the circumstances
@Eikuza Good for them. Do they have 9 million monthlies on Spotify? Or 2 No.1 albums?
Is it weird that h377 is my favorite song on the album or Maybe Adderall
I feel exactly the same
I love this album and the fact they are reinventing themselves on every album.
This one is amazing, it has harder songs, softer bits, harsh vocals, clean vocals, beautiful riffs and melodies, plus an amazing basslines. What more could one ask?
I just can't with slipknot anymore,... its just not original or special anymore.... there isn't anything standing out... 1 time listen and I'm good
A lot of the verses feel forced and the poppy choruses, too.
I mean, isn't that kind of the tradition Slipknot come from anyway? maybe they're finally showing their true colours as this generation's KISS
I'd prefer 10 songs balls to the wall, and maybe a variety of tempos/tempo changes to keep the unpredictable nature of cool metal
It’s so weird because I said exactly the same thing about Corey’s Vocals just making it less heavy
The cleans on this album all seem to have a doubling effect on his voice that make it sound super weird and poppy. I don't hate clean slipknot choruses, they've done it well in the past, but this album has that weird sound that really rubs me the wrong way.
My Slipknot album ranking goes like this:
Iowa
Slipknot
We Are Not Your Kind
All Hope is Gone
Vol. 3
.5 The Gray Chapter
For me, this album is better the AHIG, not sure if it's better the WANYK, might have to wait a bit more.
My ranking is
1. Self Titled and Iowa
2. .5
3. Vol 3
4. AHIG
5. WANYK
6. TESF
Its too hard for me to judge between ST and Iowa.
I'll have to sit and think a while before I decide on Corey's lyrical strength but it didn't seem bad when I listened the first time
The new album is absolutely amazing!!!! 🤘🏻🔥
Not even an attempt to blend, just type of vibes.
personally, i loved it after several listens. and now ive been putting chapters together out of the songs as to what he may be writing about. in an interview awhile back, CT said now that he got some things off of his chest with wanyk, he wanted to approach this one by trying to write from other ppls perspectives. i think that Adderall, Dying Song, Chapeltown and Yen all tell one part of the story on their own. and there are likely two other chapters told through the other 8 songs, in a way. this may or may not have anything to do with it, but Clowns one daughter died a while back during the wanyk cycle and i dont think we ever heard how and part of me wonders if he maybe lowkey made the story of the first 4 songs possibly talk about what she might have been going through and how they are all processing it now. idk. ideas.
If you take take adderall and heirloom out of the album its a pretty solid album.
I face-palmed when the chorus kicked in on Hivemind.
This review is spot on.
This album is good, considering that they are already a bit older. If you want an album like Iowa or ST Corey will lose his voice or screw it up, so either we never get another album, or the album will be crap, so enjoy the new album, the new music, it's not bad, in my opinion better than the last three albums, some didn't, I hope when they release a new album that it will be better, when they are no longer in cooperation with Roadrunner Records, because I think they softened them a bit, with that exaggeration and forcing of clean singing vocals and the instrumentals are amazing, the guitars are better than the last three albums, Jim and Mick did a fantastic job, as did V man, as well as Pfaff and Clown on background vocals, the drums are great, Jay keeps getting better and better, Craig and Sid are phenomenal on this album, Corey is great with the screams as well as the clean vocals, but like you said, I feel like they're pushing it too much, and I think we need more songs on this album, maybe a 3 or 4 more
Better than the last 3? False. WANYK was better musically and more cohesive and .5 was better than this as well.
@@danb5944 I like his clean vocals too, but this just feel to forced, even forced was good but they can do a lot better in my opinion
Bro if you want your head kicked in Check out OH WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS from FIT FOR AND AUTOPSY or anything from HUMANITYS LAST BREATH
U basically want an iowa pt.2
Fr
the choruses are getting weaker and not memorable anymore, like "well, the part with melodic voice is supposed to go here, put something here" and that's it.
Slipknot turned into the Jonas bros
Yen is the best song on the album
It is. And the song is just.....OK
So sad.
Heard the album first thing in the morning and loved it😶
I wouldn’t call this album cringe…
Same it’s alright but I like Yen, Hive Mind, Chapeltown Rag the best
It's definitely quite different. But I vibe heavily to it. The only gripe I really have is that the overall mix seems a little....off to me. Some instruments don't seem to come out as well and some songs seem louder or lower than others. Am I the only one that thinks that way?
My fave slipknot album is we are not your kind and going from that to this was…a let down.
I loved the fact that you made this video with constructive criticism and giving the credit to the band where it was earned…regardless this was a good album and for a band that’s been doing this for 20+ years and still trying hard to make good music is enough credit for me 7/10 🫡🔥
Yen is the best song off the album
i agree with you on everything besides acidic heriloom and h377
I think album 8...is where we get a less stifled sound...it's definitely going to be a reset after this..
