  • @JMulvy
    @JMulvy 6 месяцев назад +268

    The song is about an unrequited love, it is full of regret because he believes he drove her away by confessing his love to her. The video is about his obsession with her and inability to let her go after they split. If he becomes her, he never has to let her go. The story goes that Paul heard Corey working on the song by himself and he was really self-conscious about it but Paul convinced him to keep working on it. Then one day when Corey was particularly down Paul (bass), Jim (lead guitar) and Joey(drums) surprised him with some preliminary instrumentals to go along with it and it became a collaborative effort that the band had not experienced before. I will save the rest of the story for when you react to the Live acoustic version that the comments will no doubt beg you to react to. By the way... there are NINE members in Slipknot at this time and Snuff is their most popular of the slower, emotional songs but you are right. It is not their typical sound. This video was directed by Shawn (lead percussion) featuring cameos from Malcolm McDowell and Ashley Laurence.

    • @JMulvy
      @JMulvy 3 месяца назад +11

      @@ksensapp7702 the friend you are talking about was Paul Gray (Pig mask, Bassist) and he didn't commit suicide he OD'd. Snuff was the last song that both he and Joey Jordison (Kabuki mask, drums, died of a genetic disease) worked on. They were both alive when it got released, but since their death (especially Paul's) this song has been rededicated to their memory. When it was released it was about a friend who he confessed his love to but she did not love him back and it not only destroyed what hopes he had for a relationship but it ended their friendship too.

    • @test-547

    • @JMulvy
      @JMulvy 3 месяца назад +3

      @@test-547 Not quite. Both Paul Gray and Joey Jordison were alive when the album All Hope is Gone was released in Sept 2009. It was the last song the three of them worked on together. Paul died May 2010 and Joey in July 2021. The song was rededicated to Paul after. The woman in question Corey was never actually married to. He was going through a divorce at the time but the 'friend' who helped him get through it was just being a good friend. He thought it was something more than that but he was wrong and when he told her she disconnected from him entirely. The pain of this song was originally from an unrequited love.

    One of the great things about metal music is that sometimes the heaviest metal song isn’t the heaviest song musically.
    One of the things that drew me to metal music in my youth, when I was first struggling with my own demons and mental health issues, was how it can explore these deeply emotional and difficult subjects in such an open and direct manner. One thing people who aren’t metal fans, or understand the genre, don’t get is that metal music is just as capable of making the listener cry as any other type of music.
    Slipknot is an amazingly talented group of musicians and Corey Taylor’s vocal ability is truly tremendous.

    It looks like no one has taken a stab at unpacking the video without cheating and searching the internet to see if Corey or the band did a behind the scenes or explicitly answered it.
    It follows a man tortured by the promise he once made to never forget or let go of someone who has died. We can presume he went through the 'normal' stages of grief at home, and in the opening shots, he's smoking a cigarette to calm his nerves before he escalates his coping attempts to dressing up as his lost lover in an attempt to recreate...something. Perhaps a night from years past.
    The video tells a bit of a different story than the song and lyrics in my opinion, as those non-musical elements aren't present on either the album (album version is over 1 minute shorter) or when Corey does it live acoustic.
    There are two more angles to approach the video from - one is from a kink angle from the shoe sniffing to self harm to cross dressing. A second would be the concept of a 'snuff' film and how this would fit into that genre... perhaps the video tape he keeps replaying may be so torturing to the main character that an otherwise innocent 'home video' has become as horrifying and painful as a snuff film following his loss. That's all too much to unpack for a YT comment section though.
    Hope you do more reactions, I love how much musical knowledge and attention to detail you brought to this song!

    • @TealCamel
      @TealCamel 5 месяцев назад

      Great synopsis. Another possible interpretation is that she is living but has left him; but either way, he can't cope with the loss and has taken to becoming her in order to try to fill the void. A third possible interpretation is that she never existed; she was a figment of his imagination that became so real his mind splintered and he started having multiple personalities, and he keeps reliving the loss over and over as in the "real" personality he keeps finding the clues his alter-ego left, such as the lipstick on the glass or the shoe.
      One of the reasons I love the video is that it invites such speculation and discussion. There's no real "clear" answer.

    I really wish people would stop watching the music videos for their first time reactions. I can't tell you how many of these types of videos are ruined because the listener is paying attention to the video instead of the music. Plus a lot of the music videos, including this one have stuff in them to add to the visuals but aren't in the original audio. During that final build when they stopped the music for the spoken word I could see in your face you were disappointed. And I agree it killed the momentum of the song, but they did it specifically for the video. No offense I think your reactions are unique and love them but try to find the audio version from now on. Its the first version we all get to listen to when the song/album is released. Love your singing along parts and the vocal isolation as well.🤘🔥

    The distance between a song like Snuff and a song like Diluded isn’t far off. You simply have to be willing to listen to what he is saying, the hurt he’s conveying, and how it’s impacted him. If you go into a song labeling it as “scary boy music”, you’ll never truly listen to it. Music doesn’t have to align to your personal tempo to convey a message or be considered powerful.

    Oh, Cris - you picked a fantastic first song to introduce yourself to Slipknot. No need to dive headfirst into the ice water if you don't have to, yeah?
    Recommended next step (takes it up a notch without approaching their more extreme tracks, still beautiful vocals - and LYRICS! Always lyrics...):
    "Dead Memories"
    It's also a great song, because it includes both Joey and Paul, both of whom are sadly no longer with us...
    Loved your reaction. I've been listening to Slipknot since I was a dorky teenager. It's been almost 30 years, and I still love them.
    Loved the vid.

    Weird choice as a Slipknot debut!
    For a more authentic experience....
    People = Shit, Disterpiece, SIC, Heretic Anthem, Eyeless, Spit It Out, pretty much anything from the self titled or Iowa albums
    This was a later song, almost a ballad when they were experimenting, and Coreys first contribution. Its very dark still!

    Great analysis as always! I like the way you point out interesting vocal moments in a music track without instrumentals 🤩
    Similarly, I was introduced to Slipknot through their lyrical songs such as "Snuff" or "Vermilion Pt. 2."
    My suggestion is to continue exploring their not scary boy but a bit heavier music like "Vermilion Pt. 1" or "Killpop" 😉

    I just found you through the algorithm! Holy moly, I enjoyed this so much. Snuff is my favorite song. It got me through hard times and I have the first few lines tattooed on my wrist. I really love the fact that you teach us so much about the musical composition of the song and point out every individual thing. I'm not musically inclined at all but my baby brother is and he's talked to me about isolating a certain instrument, etc in a song and I have such a hard time doing it but I easily followed along with you! Thank you for the lesson!! Definitely subbing. :D

    This song feels more like a Corey Taylor solo song or his other band Stone Sour song. If you want the Slipknot experience gotta react to something from their self-titled album or Iowa album. Songs like Surfacing, Liberate, Spit it Out, Disasterpiece. After Iowa they went way more commercial which isn't bad but their sound changed too.
