He sings this one in memory of their former bass player Paul Gray who passed away. That's a reason for so much emotion. It's not the original backstory to the song but that's kinda where it goes now.

This song is one he wrote with the help of his best friend Paul Gray. Evidently it became Paul Grays favorite song, sadly Paul passed away. So now at every live show, Corey plays this song as a tribute to Paul. The emotion you hear in his voice and can see in his expression when getting to certain lines are genuine, it’s hard for him to sing this song, which is why the audience helps him by singing it with him. Truly bittersweet.

He wrote this song with Gray, but it was dedicated to an ex girlfriend who left him in a difficult time. His sorrow while singing is caused by the loss of the friend that helped him to exorcize his inner demons. Most of us probably can relate to it

    • @joenobody5913
      @joenobody5913 2 года назад +29

That's what life is right? Eventually most of us can always relate in some way or another. People have a habit of thinking (often when something bad happens) that nobody could know their pain. But that's just not true. Chances are most people actually can. Very few people get thru life without losing someone they love. Unless of course you're a sociopath or a psychopath or something in which case you're gonna get thru life without caring about anyone but yourself (just hopefully don't end up a serial killer or something). Hurray for small favors!

Anyway, we did the thing for a decade, me and Quan moved to the city but big dude stayed and got married to a woman and had 2 beautiful babies. Years went by and I got a call from his mom that he died in a car accident he caused by drinking and driving.
That devastated me because I am the group alcoholic. That was supposed to be me. Not him. He never fucking called to talk about his problems. He bottled them up but I knew I should've known better to talk to him more but my problems were taking all my time. I left big dude behind and I hate it so much. I need a cigarette.

Corey's, as a comedian, would describe as a comic that doesn't write jokes. Comics that don't write jokes have stories. Corey is a musician with stories. He doesn't sing for a pay check he creates music because it's his expression. When I get on stage I talk about the day, not work new material all the time. I don't got material, I got shit to talk about. When people give you genuine expression it hits different. You can feel when someone is selling you a lie or their soul. That's my opinion. This hits because everyone can relate drastically.

"All of that was ripped apart, when you refused to fight" sums up my last relationship so well. She got sick and I stuck by her, quit my job to take care of her, put my dreams and wishes on hold for 2 years to make sure she was cared for. Then when she got better and I needed some care for my mental health, at first she was supportive, but on the day she didn't want to stick around, didn't care and cut me off. Turns out she had someone else lined up who didn't need help with mental health.
So yeah a week later I played this song just before I was about to attempt suicide, but luckily I was stopped and got the help I needed.

This dude makes it seem easy, while he's reaching the most extreme places with his voice. The emotion he can put into his singing is unreal, whether he's singing melodicly, grunting, singing with grit,...doesn't matter, he can do it all. Yeah for real. I find Corey Tayler to have one of the most--if not the most--versatile, powerful and wide-ranging voices in the entire industry. This man makes it seem easy, while he's reaching the most extreme extremes with his voice. His range reminds me of Freddy Mercury, and that is a gigantic compliment. Also, the emotion he can put into his singing is unreal, whether he's singing melodicly, grunting, singing with grit or lashing out towards the highest notes...doesn't matter, he can do it all. I sing in a band with some friends just as a hobby and I would give my left arm to have a voice even remotely like that. One of a kind, an exquisite vocal genius

This song is about Corey's first wife Scarlett. In 2003, he tried to commit suicide by jumping off of a balcony and his friend Thom stopped him. Scarlett threatened to leave Corey after that if he didn't get sober and get his mental health in order. He did, but they divorced in 2007. He seemed upset that it wasn't enough and obviously still loved her.

One thing I love about music, and really all art in general, is that it ceases to belong to you once you release it. Sure, it was written about something important to you (the artist), but every fan is going to connect with the lyrics in different ways and different parts will be meaningful to some that are filler for others....and thats okay. Its one thing that makes music absolutely beautiful. Thats also why I've never cared if a song wasn't about a thing that happened to the one writing it. It shouldn't matter whose story it is for it to have an impact. Take the song "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day. Billie Joe said he wrote it about the death of his father I think. The music video, though, shows a young couple in middle america torn apart by the war in iraq/afghanistan. To a lot of people, the song is about 9/11/2001 and a "war on terror" that has lasted until this year, a war that has left countless men and women widows, countless mothers childless, and countless veterans traumatized for life. It seemed like September 11 went on and on and on and on and on, and in a way it did. Both meanings can be true.
Same with this song exactly like you said. It started about a girl, but when Paul died the lyrics hit different. It could be that he doesn't even think of the girl anymore when he hears this, and thats okay. Maybe he thinks of both. I have always been a writer and lover of words and how they can both cut you like a knife and give a profound sense of relief even decades later. Sometimes only 1 line has meaning to the listener, and thats okay too.
I don't really have a point...just waxing poetic about the beauty of music I guess. Must be Monday.

Here are the complete lyrics so nobody misses any great lines:
Bury all your secrets in my skin
Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins
The air around me still feels like a cage
And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again
So, if you love me, let me go
And run away before I know
My heart is just too dark to care
    I can't destroy what isn't there
    Deliver me into my fate
If I'm alone I cannot hate
I don't deserve to have you
Ooh, my smile was taken long ago
If I can change I hope I never know
I still press your letters to my lips
And cherish them in parts of me that savor every kiss
I couldn't face a life without your light (without your light)
But all of that was ripped apart when you refused to fight
So, save your breath, I will not hear
I think I made it very clear
You couldn't hate enough to love
Is that supposed to be enough?
I only wish you weren't my friend
Then I could hurt you in the end
I never claimed to be a saint
Ooh, my own was banished long ago
It took the death of hope to let you go
    Oh, oh
So, break yourself against my stones
And spit your pity in my soul
    You never needed any help
You sold me out to save yourself
And I won't listen to your shame
You ran away, you're all the same
    Angels lie to keep control
Ooh, my love was punished long ago

Corey sang this live in Baltimore to his friend Paul Gray who sadly passed away. This man sings with such emotion in that performance he literally breaks down after the last note he sings. This song is so personal. The emotion in the song is overwhelming.

I can't listen to this acoustic without tearing 😢 knowing this emotion was for Paul how much it tears him up one of his best friends is gone 💔

This song never fails to make me cry, the lyric if I'm alone I cannot hate, and if I can change I hope I never know is so full of self loathing and it hits so deep. In some sense I still struggle with the implications of identifying with those lyrics, but it also empowers me to fight to change and open myself up to the world. This song will always have a special place in me. I'm glad you reacted to this. Thank you

Corey is one of the most underrated and under appreciated vocalists out there. Sure he probably couldn’t name many vocal techniques yet he is able to express such a wide variety of sentiments and emotions. The dude can sing anything.

I love how passionate you are! I love that someone else is so connected with music in the sense no matter what genre it is, you are moved In a way as if the music runs through you, touches your heart and soul and leaves everlasting emotions or a conscious connection that almost leaves you speechless in awe or excitement like the fire inside your soul is sparked or ignited every time you reach a deep respect for just pure talent! It’s good to see someone get excited and moved by music as I do, to the point where you can’t hide what your feeling! Love it! You are a beautiful soul and a beautiful person and I love your passion!

He does say at the beginning of the song "It's very hard to get through, so I'm obviously gonna need your help on this". I love Corey and your reaction is one of the best I've seen so far.

Corey is one of my favorite metal singers besides Tatiana. In Slipknot he has such clarity to his screaming that you can actually hear what he is singing. He has an amazing cover of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game. I highly recommend that one.

So when he is singing " spit your pity in my soul". From then on he is fighting tears it's raw emotion because even he is human.
