For this album Queens switches between 3 different vocalists. The bassist at the time Nick Oliveri, Josh Homme, and the late Mark Lannegan of Screaming Trees fame.
It's a concept album with the listener getting in a car in los Angeles and driving out into the desert of San Bernardino county. You're basically driving to hell.
that little ditty that plays at the end of song for the deaf is a rendition of the opening track of the previous album and them laughing is them making fun of how goofy the lyrics are :D
"This is waltz." Well, Josh's 1st guitar teacher was a polka player, taught josh in that style, so JH now writes from kind of a polka base. He goes a LOT of different directions, but there usually is SOME threads you can follow back to find more polka.
If you liked this, check out Them Crooked Vultures…..supergroup consisting of the vocalist/guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age, with David Grohl on drums and backup vocals and John Paul Jones of Zeppelin on bass and keyboards. YOWZA, it smacks HARD.
Great first take on a great album. You showed lots of insight for a first listen. You'll definitely enjoy the rest of their catalog, and rhe great thing is they never stand still.
Great album. Probably the best one since it's the only one I feel like utilized the whole multiple vocalist thing of the early Queens days to it's advantage. I like Josh, but I miss Nick. RIP Mark Lanegan.
I love how diverse this album is. I know someones already commented the concept of this album about driving into hell but i think another cool element is the idea thay each song taps into a different radio station and thus is a different subgenre of rock
This was another one that was fun to watch your reaction to, as it is full of surprise. 😊 The voice of WOMB toward the end is the late, great Natasha Shneider, from the band Eleven (who you should add to your discovery list). The Queens album before this one, Rated R, is less polished but even more diverse and as good in my book.
My favorite tracks on here are first it giveth, song for the dead, go with the flow, God is in the radio, song for the death, and mosquito song are my favorite tracks on here. I love dave grohl he is amazing!
Stoner Rock (and a sub-sub-genre, Desert Rock) is what the previous band iteration "Kyuss" was, interesting you picked up on that. You can hear a bit of the same Kyuss flavors through QOTSA, and you should check out the "Welcome to Sky Valley" album even though it's their third and probably people would suggest earlier-is-better as usual. Josh Homme was a guitarist in Kyuss and a little tiny baby Homme can be seen in the "Demon Cleaner" official video, mostly feeding string/leash to a little person for some cryptic reason.
Hell yeah brother. I was 7 when this album came out, I think it might be the last great rock album. Anywho, check out Incubus’ 1997 album S.C.I.E.N.C.E., completely different sound, but you’ll see the albums are structured similarly. Lots of California bands used the storytelling/skit structure that groups like Pink Floyd, and tons of 90’s rap/r&b(i.e., NWA, The Fugees, etc.) used to great effect at the time.
Can’t go wrong with any QOTSA, but Like Clockwork, Villains, and In Times New Roman are a must. They’re a loose trilogy to be listened to in that order. Some of the absolute best rock music to come out of the past decade or so.
Would love to see you react to alice in chains. Layne Staley's vocals will blow your mind!. One of the most powerfull voices to ever sing. Would recommend facelift or dirt for a first album to listen to by them
You can't compare them to any other band. They have their own thing. They work very hard to have it. From songwriting to tones. They're respected by most musicians. They're all bad asses. Side note: This album and every album. Josh (singer and guitarist) requires drums and cymbals to be recorded seperately. It gives the drums a unique sound and feel. You can also isolate parts better in the mix. One example of what they do to be different.
if David Bowie and Tom Waits, sang with Black Flag and Masters Of Reality, covering pirate dirge classics, playing in the middle of summer on the Route 66 highway...American Western Desert Heavy Punk...not heavy metal, not hardcore punk...heavy punk
Not as controversial as you may think. While SFTD has more variety in terms of spanning a wider spectrum, and it COULD be considered more "interesting," but LC hits so much harder & delivers emotional effects to a greater degree than every song in SFTD except Mosquito Song, which fully conveys the desolation & hopelessness intended.
Sounds a bit odd, listening to you listen through speakers. Sound is phasing as you move around. Headphones and mix in the track is better for your audience.
We NEEEED a like clockwork reaction. Shit will blow your mind
Yeah what a completely insane album that is
Required listening. The growth alone is incredible. Songwriting, musicianship and soundscapes are incredible!
🤢 that was the end of the band. Became so bad and corny beginning with that album. Era Vulgaris was the last QOTSA album
One of my favourite albums of all time
Songs for the Deaf is the pinnacle of their early career.
Like Clockwork is the pinnacle of their later era. IMO
For this album Queens switches between 3 different vocalists. The bassist at the time Nick Oliveri, Josh Homme, and the late Mark Lannegan of Screaming Trees fame.
RIP Mark Lanegan 🙏🙏🙏

9:00 it is a different vocalist. Mark Lanegan from Screaming Trees. He co-wrote and did lead vocals on a few songs.
It's driving me crazy that he doesn't figure it out during the video 😂
"This is waltz."
Well, Josh's 1st guitar teacher was a polka player, taught josh in that style, so JH now writes from kind of a polka base. He goes a LOT of different directions, but there usually is SOME threads you can follow back to find more polka.
Mosquito song name-dropping/hinting towards the next album in line is a cool touch
It also feels like something that could come out of a Desert Sessions recording
If you liked this, check out Them Crooked Vultures…..supergroup consisting of the vocalist/guitarist of Queens of the Stone Age, with David Grohl on drums and backup vocals and John Paul Jones of Zeppelin on bass and keyboards. YOWZA, it smacks HARD.
I can't lie I love watching people have out of body experiences to Mosquito Song 👌
Great first take on a great album. You showed lots of insight for a first listen. You'll definitely enjoy the rest of their catalog, and rhe great thing is they never stand still.
One of the better music reviewers. Honestly better than Brad taste in music , I’d say he deserves to be as famous as Anthony Fantano!
Favorite band of all time right here, kings of songs to blast while driving fast. Really recommend their album Like Clockwork
Josh Homme has a little experience in stoner rock ironically, give kyuss a listen if it tickles your fancy x
Great album. Probably the best one since it's the only one I feel like utilized the whole multiple vocalist thing of the early Queens days to it's advantage. I like Josh, but I miss Nick. RIP Mark Lanegan.

This album just rocks all the way through, its long but worth it. Pretty much all of their albums are great in their own way
I reaaaaally hope you'll do Lullabies To Paralyze, it's my favorite album by them with imo the strongest concept
Please do Like Clockwork next! I think it’s even better than this one, though I love both so much
driving through the entire country using the entire speedometer
You MUST experience Like Clockwork...an absolute masterpiece❤
My favorite album & guitar tone OF ALL TIME right here
My favorite tracks on here are first it giveth, song for the dead, go with the flow, God is in the radio, song for the death, and mosquito song are my favorite tracks on here. I love dave grohl he is amazing!
This band is beyond tremendous. They just don’t miss and Josh Homme the 🐐 for real 🤘🏽
This was peak Grohl as far as I’m concerned

you have to do Like Clockwork, it is now considered another classic album from the band 🙏 🙏 🙏
Hell yeah brother. I was 7 when this album came out, I think it might be the last great rock album.

Oh hey, I jumped the gun. I see you know all about the skits. Nice.
My favorite album of all time.
Hangin‘ Tree is in 5/4 btw. and changes time in the bridge. So basically advanced Jazz. Insane Band.
Can’t go wrong with any QOTSA, but Like Clockwork, Villains, and In Times New Roman are a must. They’re a loose trilogy to be listened to in that order. Some of the absolute best rock music to come out of the past decade or so.
yessssSSS
...Like Clockwork is transcendental. Highly recommend
qotsa are goated songwriters imo, so consistently good
I demand you use headphones! There’s so much buried in Qotsa’s songs it’s a whole different game🙏
That voice is "N.P.Arrrrrrrr" the national public pirate talkradio station. Rum, shoulder parrots, and dabloons up for debate on the next segment.
Dave I think you should check out Beck if you still haven't. A good one to start with would be Odelay.
Song for the dead has my favorite drums in any song ever
Rated r, Like clockwork..... are just as good imo
Please react to Interpol's first two albums!!
Would love to see you react to alice in chains. Layne Staley's vocals will blow your mind!. One of the most powerfull voices to ever sing. Would recommend facelift or dirt for a first album to listen to by them
Rated R is the album that made me a Queens fan. Still my favorite. Great reaction!
One day you’ll listen to The Garden and wonder why you didn’t listen sooner
You can't compare them to any other band. They have their own thing. They work very hard to have it. From songwriting to tones. They're respected by most musicians. They're all bad asses.

Another reaction before listening to Imaginal Disk by Magdalena Bay 😢
I've already heard it. There will be no reaction sadly.
@@DAVECHER aw dang, bummer! What did you think? (I’ll still watch this video dontchuworry)
Lol they literally ARE the origins of stoner rock (Josh Homme with Kyuss)
Like Clockwork!!!
He's the Ginger Elvis.
Toxicity of a Down let's goooo!!
if David Bowie and Tom Waits, sang with Black Flag and Masters Of Reality, covering pirate dirge classics, playing in the middle of summer on the Route 66 highway...American Western Desert Heavy Punk...not heavy metal, not hardcore punk...heavy punk
speaking of Dave Grohl,
Whata loser he has become with one single Instagram post…
"Rated R" the album before this one was much better.
Funny you mention it being Nirvana-esque, because Dave Grohl drums on the record
Just another lovechild for Grohl.
...like clockwork please
This kind of is a classic album but ...Like Clockwork is so much more interesting than this for me.
Controversial take but Like Clockwork is like a billion times better than this album. Still great though
I agree.
Completely agree, I Appear Missing is one of the best songs oat
Nev
No album is even twice as good as this one. Clockwork is good though, in their top 4.
Not as controversial as you may think. Welcome to Sky Valley and Green Machine is better than anything QOTSA have done
Two words: Dave Grohl
Bro, please don't become like Brad Taste lol. Otherwise good shit.
Sounds a bit odd, listening to you listen through speakers. Sound is phasing as you move around. Headphones and mix in the track is better for your audience.
Yes I know this. My headphones broke a couple months ago and I can't afford new ones yet.
@@DAVECHER what will you get?
toxicity of a down, lol. close enough
It’s the concept of a band name
He got there in the end lmao
Please listen to The Holy Bible by Manic Street Preachers.
I guarantee you'll get 10k new followers over night.
Bro go back to leaving your best and worst tracks in the caption please 😭🙏
TERRIBLE AUDIO...plug-ins needed
