My Minn Kota Ulterra Experience. Have you taken the plunge?

  • Minn Kota Ulterra trolling motors will automatically deploy, operate and stow via the remote control however the downside to this unit is, its manual power button that must be pushed prior to launch as this unit does not have the ability to power on from the remote control. so I had to take the plunge and retrieve my rig.

*Great little trolling motor **enjoyable.fishing** recommend had it hooked up to my 15 foot old town canoe and it pushed it pretty good with me and my son (220 pounds each).*

I've been researching these "Self-Help" style motors for a couple of years. Still I am undecided. I am, like Steve, human and know this WILL happen if I buy this style of unit. I've concluded it's the price of "Angler Excitement", similar to buck fever only much less seen, rarely shared..... Reason being, Steve is one of the most well respected fisherpeople on the water today. It takes HUGE humility for an Angler of this level to share his "Swim". Much respect to Steve for having the nerve to share what most would put in their DELETE file. RESPECT

    EASY Fix -
I have the same MK, and to AVOID the much colder swims of northern waters, I used Velcro to attach the remote to the motor when not in use. This way I HAVE to go to the motor for the remote, and it REMINDS my excited, fish crazy self to turn ON Power and listen for the chirp! Hope this helps keep you dry.

We all make those bloopers. Once last year, I put my boat in at the landing, parked the trailer, got my vest and a few other odds and ends out of my Jeep, walked (walked mind you) bac t the dock, got in the boat (which I had left idling) and put it in gear to leave when I noticed the carpet was wet. I looked at the transom and low and behold I had left the plug out. Not only that, I had obviously lost the plug or someone had liberated it. I had to RUN back to the parking lot and put my trailer BACK in the water, load the boat, and go buy a new plug. I now carry two spares. One in the boat and one in my tackle box.

That is what comes from depending on electronics. I have solo launched and retrieved for YEARS and not once has a line tied from the boat to the truck, or the dock, let my boat drift far enough that I had to swim to the boat to get it back. It has always been right there at the end of the line and all I had to do was pull just a little, that is if I was being lazy. Normally just tie boat to the dock after getting the boat off the trailer and when I get back from parking the truck the boat is right there waiting for me to step aboard.

You're not alone Steve....I watched a guy have to do this very thing. :)
On a serious note though, in another incident (not trolling motor related)another guy jumped in to fetch his boat which had drifted away from the dock with his daughter in it. He cramped up and drowned. Ever since then I've been wearing my PFD at launch & load, just in case I have to fetch mine.

I had one before I bought it I was re insured they had the problems fixed with the trolling motors. I unloaded my boat and it took off across the lake had it in the shop a few times and replace it and one night I went to the lake and my boat took off again and bouncing off other people's boats Sea-Doo Docs across the lake and all I could do was watch it it would go wide open and slow down all by itself luckily a man and his son about 10 minutes to 12 put his boat in and meet him when chasing my boat down and that was a job by itself because it would cut off and turn on wide-open make 90s I said the heck with it. I sold it for 300 hundred dollars I believe I pay around 2,400 for it I told the person I sold it to what it would do and along with other problems with it I still had a warranty with it I switched it over to him.
