    From a Billboard Magazine interview with Tom Petty: “Free Fallin'”: “Jeff Lynne and I were sitting around with the idea of writing a song and I was playing the keyboard and I just happened to hit on that main riff, the intro of the song, and I think Jeff said something like, ‘That’s a really good riff but there’s one chord too many,’ so I think I cut it back a chord and then, really just to amuse Jeff, honestly, I just sang that first verse. Then he starts laughing. Honestly, I thought I was just amusing Jeff but then I got to the chorus of the song and he leaned over to me and said the word, ‘freefalling.’ And I went to sing that and he said, ‘No, take your voice up and see how that feels.’ So I took my voice up an octave or two, but I couldn’t get the whole word in. So I sang ‘freeee,’ then ‘free falling.’ And we both knew at that moment that I’d hit on something pretty good. It was that fast. He had to go somewhere, and I wrote the last verse and kind of just polished the rest of the song and when I saw him the next day I played him the song and he was like, ‘Wow, you did that last night?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah.’ And he said. ‘We’ve got to go cut this,’ and we just took off to Mike Campbell’s studio where we knew we could get in and get it done that day. So we went in and made the record that day.”

    The lyrics deal with Los Angeles culture, mentioning actual places in the area: Reseda, Mulholland and Ventura Boulevard. It implies that the people of LA will casually use others for personal gain, as the singer has just dumped a girl and doesn't even miss her. Petty was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida and moved to LA with The Heartbreakers in 1974. His outsider perspective came in handy in this song. -Song Facts -

    • @TheCkent100
      @TheCkent100 3 года назад

      I'm surprised that Song Facts didn't mention that the freeway does not actually run through Reseda. It runs through Tarzana, which is south of Reseda. Reseda's southern border is Victory Blvd, which is about 10 blocks north of the 101 freeway. I say "about" because I never actually counted the blocks when I lived in Tarzana.
      Both Tarzana and Reseda have the same number of syllables, so no idea why Tom chose the incorrect town when he wrote the song. Maybe it was name recognition - Reseda was the name of the town that Daniel Russo lived in in the original "Karate Kid" and people were more familiar with Reseda as a result than Tarzana. Tarzana's only real claim to fame is that it was named after Tarzan. The author of the Tarzan books was Edgar Rice Burroughs, perhaps the most famous resident of Tarzana in the town's early years. But most people don't know that fact.

    “Free falling” was a studio add lib that was suggested by Jeff Lynn of ELO. “She’s a good girl” was also a studio add lib, but that one came from Tom Petty, the two (Lynn and Petty) were just playing around with song ideas when this one just fell out of the guitar. Interestingly, Tom Petty’s record company passed in this song. They thought that he included it in his tape as a joke. It turned out to be his single greatest hit ever.

      For some reason Howie hated it. It was off his solo album and he basically brought a lot of the band to play on tracks and Howie seemed irritated during the recording Tom thought he was irritated at the process taking too long and and Howie said it was the song he didn't like. Tom said he's free to go if he doesn't want to play on it and I'm guessing him saying ok and leaving meant he wasn't there for the initial recording.

    I went to Tom Petty’s last concert before he died, it was at Hollywood Bowl. The last song he played was “American Woman”. I commented to someone on the way out that I wasn’t the biggest fan but I just had to make sure I saw this legend of music play before he died. Man, he had so many hits, it was a great concert.

    The song's meaning: Although the singer has the perfect, all-American girlfriend who loves him, he doesn't want that. He leaves her with a broken heart and sets out to be free. He's hanging with the young street crowd having fun (for example, the skateboarders and vampires). He is no longer tied down by his traditional girlfriend in a monogamous relationship and expectations of marriage and suburban life. He admits that he is a bad boy and doesn't even miss her. He keeps singing that he's now free! However, with that freedom he admits that he is also declining quickly (free falling) into the abyss of street life.

Petty explained in an interview with Billboard magazine that he and Jeff Lynne were sitting around trying to come up with a song, and Lynne got him to say "free falling". The next day they went and recorded the song. He didn't write it about any person, but instead what he saw on his frequent drives along Ventura Boulevard.
