Yes, he actually got his girl, beautiful model Christie Brinkley former supermodel, who appears in the video and was his wife and mother of their daughter, Alexa Rae. This song was written for Christie, I think. 🙂🙂🙂 Sadly, they did end up splitting…please check out his A Matter of Trust. The video features Christie and baby Alexa..really great song!
Actually it may have been written for Elle Mcpherson who he was dating at the time
@Little Ogeechee Thanks for suggesting Matter of Trust.... I was raised on Billy Joel's music and a Matter of Trust is one that is in my Top 10 list .
@@LeighMet - perhaps, but Christie Brinkley appearing in his videos seems to back up the Brinkley story.
You're both right... "According to an interview with Howard Stern, Joel had originally titled the song Uptown Girls, and it was conceived on an occasion when he was surrounded by Christie Brinkley, Whitney Houston and his then-girlfriend Elle Macpherson. According to numerous interviews with Joel, the song was initially written about his relationship with Macpherson, but it ended up also becoming about his soon-to-be wife, Brinkley, both women being two of the most famous supermodels of the 1980s."
And I LOVE A Matter of Trust and it doesn't get enough play! 😍
I saw Billy Joel in Concert back in the 80's, while he was still married to Christie Brinkley. At the time, she was one of, if not the top super models in the world. She was in attendance that night and my seat was in a direct line of site to hers. I am not sure that I ever saw the stage.
This is an homage to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a major pop/rock act in the 1960s/70s. Frankie Valli had the falsetto of falsetto voices. They were the top American Band before the Beatles came along. They had #1 hits when the Beatles were around, and #1 hits after the Beatles broke up --- the ONLY AMERICAN BAND TO DO THAT!
The 4 Seasons are band you HAVE to react to.
December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)
@@headofbaphomet my favorite
Agree
Technically, but Elvis was close...his last number one was just months before the Beatles last, and his first was well before.
been after them for a while to react to the Four Seasons. One of the biggest selling groups ever. Rag Doll has unbelievable harmonies, their first three recordings all hit #1: Sherry, Walk Like a Man and Big Girls Don't Cry.
This one's from Billy's absolutely incredible album An Innocent Man. The whole record is a tribute to the '50s acts that Billy loved growing up. I believe "Uptown Girl" was supposed to be an homage to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, which is why he chose to sing it in an inflection that was slightly different from his normal voice. The backing vocals are incredible, and the beat is killer on this one.
Album tracks and artists emulated:
Side one
No. Title Length
1. "Easy Money" (Homage to James Brown and Wilson Pickett[2]) 4:04
2. "An Innocent Man" (Homage to Ben E. King and The Drifters) 5:17
3. "The Longest Time" (Homage to doo-wop groups like Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers) 3:42
4. "This Night" (Homage to Little Anthony and the Imperials; chorus tune is Ludwig van Beethoven's Pathetique sonata) 4:17
5. "Tell Her About It" (Homage to Motown groups like The Supremes and The Temptations) 3:52
Side two
No. Title Length
6. "Uptown Girl" (Homage to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons[10]) 3:17
7. "Careless Talk" (Homage to Sam Cooke) 3:48
8. "Christie Lee" (Homage to Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis) 3:31
9. "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" (Homage to Smokey Robinson) 3:56
10. "Keeping the Faith" (Homage to Betty Wright's "Clean Up Woman". Lyrical homage to Pre-British Invasion Rock n Roll)
Frankie Valli could have easily sung this! What a perfect homage!
Bumping this album on my record player right now!
One of his best albums.
Oh, you’re right. It is very Four Seasons!
Another great Billy Joel song "Only the Good Die Young" ❤🎵
Yes! One of my favorite songs of all time...still jam out to that one.
Thats the one that put him on the map. Very controversial at the time. I remember radio stations were banning it.
"For the Longest Time," "Always a Woman," "Still Rock n' Roll to Me," "My Life," "You May Be Right," "Just the Way You Are" etc etc. So many good ones to choose from! Love that you're finding all of this awesome music and enjoying it so much (and sharing that enjoyment with us!)
Only Human too
You forgot “tell her about it.”
You comment is really getting me excited for his concert in august
If you do You may be right be sure to do the Central Park concert version with Garth Brooks.
❤
If you want another Billy Joel that's different, try The Longest Time, an acapella number that harks back to fifties doo-wop.
One of my favorites!
One of my favorites!
Oh, YES! Such a great song.
Love that song
This this this, yes.
"For the Longest Time" is definitely worth a reaction.
The girl in the video is Christie Brinkley, his wife!
According to an interview with Howard Stern, Joel had originally titled the song "Uptown Girls", and it was conceived on an occasion when he was surrounded by Christie Brinkley, Whitney Houston and his then-girlfriend Elle Macpherson. @Gerald H obviously ex wife now. Wife at time of video.
@@foreveralone11w Sorry to nitpick but future wife at the time, this song came out in '83 and they married in '85.
Ok guys no fighting or you will be going to bed with out dessert.
@@seanscanlon9067 again. I’m well aware of all that. I just wanted to answer their question of “did he get the girl?” I wasn’t writing an official fact checked paper and going for specifics and timelines.
@@papamaniac2410 thank you! I simply tried to answer the question in the video title. Lol
Billy Joel songs are timeless, Billy is a class act hit making machine with a great band.
Billy Joel: "Goodnight Saigon" and "Scenes from an Italian restaurant" are my favorites ❤️❤️
Good night Saigon is chilling. One of my favorites.
Billy Joel songs worth a listen:
"You May Be Right" (my personal favorite)
"For the Longest Time"
"Only the Good Die Young"
"It's Still Rock and Roll to Me"
river of dreams
Only the good die younfg is so good. Mind you, I was raised catholic, so...
Allentown
Big shot
Moving out
Goodnight Saigon
Billy Joel's "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" is a great song, has some great piano, saxophone, is a story song, and a fan favorite.
My absolute favorite of his songs. 💚
It also has an amazing coincidence with the documentary Three Identical Strangers
@@sourisvoleur4854 Yes!
This song really shows off his skills. Gives you a good feel for what he can do.
That one is my favorite then NY state of mind.
Billy Joel is an underrated artist. He’s got so much soul and plays on many different strings. But you gotta listen to «Downeaster Alexa» from Billy!!!
Nah...He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time,as well as the seventh-best-selling recording artist and the fourth-best-selling solo artist in the United States, with over 150 million records sold worldwide he is rated.
Who thinks he's underrated? People who have never listened to him before? He has so many many top hits and great songs, what a catalog of music.
the fourth soloist with the most sales in the most important market in the world, but of course, he is undervalued, by that logic there are only 3 well-valued artists
He got her, married her, had child with her and divorced. But they are great friends. Love Billy Joel!
Just the way you are & honesty by Billy joel are really beautiful songs also! Yall would for sure like those i think 😊
Billy Joel has countless hits. Next “just the way you” are please
Yes, plus SAXOPHONE!
Great horns too.
"The Longest Time" is unique for him and flows perfectly!!!
"My Life" is a great Billy song. The piano is terrific. It was also used as the theme song for an 80s sitcom called Bosom Buddies, which starred Tom Hanks (before he became a mega-movie star). "She's Always a Woman" is also terrific, as is "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me".
I thought I was the only person who remembered Bosom Buddies. Awesome!
Agreed. He has many awesome songs, but My Life is special.
"My Life" was the first Billy Joel song I remember from the radio, and I rushed out and got the album.
I will always remember My Life as the Bosom Buddies song!
oh yeah, Bosom Buddies was good. I remember My Life as the theme song very well. Great song and yes, really great piano in that one.
By the way one of the female costars with Tom Hanks went on to play a part in the movie Bachelor Party with him as well. She also played Marty McFly's sister in Back to the Future (had to look up her name, Wendie Jo Sperber).
Say Goodbye to Hollywood, The Stranger, and Allentown are a few of my favorites. He has a lot to choose from.
Song was actually written about Christie Brinkley, Elle MacPherson (His then girlfriend) and Whitney Houston(a very young model at the time). Originally titled Uptown Girls. When he met all 3 at a bar in Jamaica who were there for a photo shoot. And it was written in the style of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
Billy married that uptown girl. You need to listen to “matter of trust “it shows Christiana with their little baby girl and the video itself is so entertaining!! You’re gonna love it!!
‘Keepin The Faith’ is one of my favorite from him. The video is so fun 🤩
One of my favorite Billy Joel songs is The Longest Time. Every voice you hear is Billy. Awesome song!
Billy is “In residence” at Madison Square Garden in NYC. He played his first concert there and over the years, he has SOLD IT OUT 76 CONSECUTIVE TIMES!
Yes and don't forget in the early 2000's Bruce Springsteen sold out 10 straight nights at the old Giants Stadium in the Meadowlands that was configured for 55,000 people each night!
Both amazing accomplishments.
I was at number 24. He was AMAZING!
Billy Joel concerts are a lot of fun. He loves to talk to the crowd and ask everyone what they want to hear. He sits on stage a plays the piano and sings. He has a great band, and they just have fun.
You need to do “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”, Billy Joel says it is his best song
CLASSIC
They'll get both piano and horns with this one.
I just posted the same comment!
And it is!
OK, so piano, AND horns, AND it's a great story-song, AND Billy thinks it's his best... I mean, C'MON!
I remember when Billy Joel start his career, he had a host of hits. This being one of them. "Piano Man" being his biggest hit, that started it all. "My Life" is another great song of his.
Allentown is one of his best. Gets back to his great piano playing.
I love that song. Billy is a master storyteller.
It's getting very hard to staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay
"Leningrad", "goodnight Saigon", "lullaby" and "she's always always a woman" are some other diamonds in Billy's musical treasury chest (a lot of piano's 😉)
Other songs from this album to listen to are "Tell Her About It", "The Longest Time", " Keeping The Faith", and "River Of Dreams".
All great songs. I don't think he ever wrote a bad song.
Oh yeah, Keeping The faith! One of my all time favourites.
@@brothergrief9531That definitely is a great song. This night and My life are a couple of of my favourites
@@ladykaycey After leaving the comment I also remembered another song I love - Easy Money.
Sorry to be annoying but River Of Dreams came a decade after the An Innocent Man album.
Every Billy Joel song mentioned in the comments is great. If I had to pick a fav, I think I'd go with "Still Rock n' Roll to Me".
A couple of great songs from Billy Joel are. "She's got a way" and "Just the way you are" Two of my favorite songs.
This song and his other song "For The Longest Time" were like tributes to one of his inspirations, Frankie Valley and The Four Seasons. You should check that out and ALSO Frankie Valley and The Four Seasons song, "Oh What A Night, Late December 1963"...you wont regret it. Youll instantly put it on your playlist, literally...that beat from the start is impossible to resist.
"River Of Dreams" favorite Billy Joel tune. Ever
Billy Joel is a great story teller. Just keep going. My favorite artist ever.
Billy Joel's biggest and most iconic song is JUST THE WAY YOU ARE. It's a standard classic that he wrote. You guys should make it your next Billy Joel! It's a masterpiece of smooth.
great song he has so many i like the song Honesty and Vienna .
We saw him in concert and after he finished the song he quipped
“And then we got divorced”
many people hate that song bc it's like easy listening but it's a great song
I disagree, I think this is his biggest hit ever and it came from his biggest album ever. He even did a newer version of Piano Man during this time. Speaking of Which you could argue Piano Man is his biggest hit.
So great to see a different generation see these amazing videos through fresh eyes.
3 more completly different songs from Billy: "Just The Way You Are", "All About Soul" and "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant".
Definitely “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant”!!!! 👍🏻
Haha, I have always loved this song. When I was in jr high some girls and I picked this as our song to walk to during a fashion show, so much fun! Good memories.
DUDE, do "Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel
I finally saw Billy Joel at Wembley Stadium here in London 30 years after I became a fan. Still a fantastic talent.
Next Billy Joel songs… “Goodnight Saigon” about the Vietnam war (with vets singing backup) and “She’s got a way” which is a true confession of love.
They should wait to do this one on Veterans Day. That would be perfect.
Thanks for sharing this reaction. This is actually my favorite Billy Joel song. Another great one is "Matter of Trust."
Billy Joel has SO many good songs. You guys could do a week's worth of just him.
More like a month
I can't really think of a bad Billy Joel song. All his songs are either good or great.
U guys made my day, U guys listen to my favorite Billy Joel song. Uptown Girl, great song, U can break it down on the dance floor. Awesome beat. Thank U Jay & Amber. Another great hit will be The Longest Time. U guys will like that.
"Always a Woman" you will adore!
Two videos you will love because they give you a feel of the average 1980's people are Billy Joel's "A Matter of Trust" and U2 "Where the Streets has no Name" because they give concerts where the people on the streets of New York City in Billy Joel's video and Los Angeles in U2's video are part of the videoes. Christie Brinkley is in the Billy Joel video with his kid I think.
"matter of trust" is another great Billy Joel video and song, showing yet more of his talent.👍
Yes really like that one
"Only The Good Die Young" is a must.
Two of Billy Joel's best songs are his most insightful and soul-touching--'Goodnight, Saigon' and 'Downeaster Alexa'. Both great, thought-provoking songs.
And along the lines of Downeaster Alexa, another great song where he tells the story of loss of an industry and thus loss of a way of life, tradition and identity is Allentown.
Goodnight Saigon moves me every time - and it's been a thousand times by now. Breathtaking.
@@steviekc9057 BJ toured here in NZ in 1987. I took my little sister to see him at Athletic Park, one of THE rugby football grounds in the world, at the time. We were up in the Millard Stand which was a double decker (rare in NZ at the time) and crazy high to be sitting on in a southerly wind straight off the Antarctic. During games, it would shake as spectators jumped and shouted but never quite found the natural resonance to make it collapse. So he started Goodnight Saigon, with the choppers. The stand vibrated in a way I'd never felt before and really did feel unsafe. But that wasn't why the crowd didn't shout. Only days earlier, a local hero volunteer rescue helicopter pilot called Peter Button had died in a crash while helping police chase an escaped convict. 13 helicopters did a flyby at his funeral, and that was what the sound evoked, not US war machines in Vietnam. I never hear it now without thinking of that time.
River of dreams is still one of my favorite Billy Joel songs
When I saw Billy Joel in concert in the 80's, I had a birds-eye view of Christie Brinkley offstage dancing through the entire show. Makes me kind of sad they didn't last.
My favorite song from Billy
Billy Joel did a bunch of these campy, vintagey videos in the 80s. I think they’re really fun. Another one to check out is Tell Her About It - some of Billy’s best lyrics, IMO. Also Keeping the Faith.
You must MUST listen to “and so it goes” by Billy Joel! Powerful lyrics, amazing piano throughout, you’ll LOVE it! Please!
My personal favorite song by Billy Joel is "Vienna". Billy himself ranked it in his own top five.
Definitely
One of my personal favorites too. Though to be honest, every song on The Stranger album is a winner.
Vienna is a favorite but I always have a place in heart for Allentown because that's my hometown.
My personal favorite, as well!
I agree! Vienna is amazing. One of my favorites, if not THE favorite.
A good companion song/video to this is Keeping The Faith which showcases his love of the music he's said multiple times influenced him. Other songs that would be great choices would be Allentown and Good Night Saigon or older tunes like Only The Good Die Young and Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) as well as It's Only Rock And Roll to Me and Sometimes A Fantasy. He wrote a lullaby song for his daughter: Lullaby (For Alexa).
When I was young, I was a dancer for 12 years (tap, jazz, ballet). This song we did a dance to for our recital, one year. I am now almost 48 years old and my dad still dedicates this song to me. It will always be his song to me bc of me dancing to it when I was little. He played it for me at my wedding. ❤️❤️❤️
Yes! He got the girl!😂
It's Still Rock and Roll to Me is one of my favorites
This entire album, An Innocent Man, is Billy Joel reflecting on the musical influences of his youth (the '50s). If you listen to the album straight thru, start to finish, you can clearly hear those influences. Also, Billy was starting to feel his age. Hitting those high notes was becoming more difficult, so he wanted to record 1 more album with the full power of his voice. The song "The Longest Time" is a wonderful doo-wop song, and the official music video is fun. However, the real treat of that song ... Billy recorded ALL 5 parts of the song in the studio. How many artists ever had that kind of vocal prowess?
And since you're such a country fan, find a live version of "You're My Home". Originally on Piano Man, "You're My Home" has a great Country & Western vibe. The live version on Songs in the Attic is the best. Here's a link for a live version (ruclips.net/video/zDH2E2wWjc0/видео.html). Two things to note about the song. First, the song's imagery was definitely written 'on the road'. Second, Billy 'turns a phrase' in the final verse. Can you say, "Hot Sex" without using either word?
The pretty woman in the video was his real life wife,(now ex wife) Christie Brinkley. They have a daughter together and I remember when those two were the talk of the town for getting together lol 💕✌
Mr Joel always seemed to be able to get supermodels as he also dated Elle McPherson just before he got with Christie Brinkley, according to some they both were interested in him at the same time, how many guys can get 2 supermodels trying to get his attention at the same time?
Billy Joel is a national treasure.
Still Rock N Roll to me by Billy Joel is my favorite. Please react to it. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Billy Joel songs which are personal favs: "It's still rock n roll to me" "Piano Man" "She's always a woman to me" "For the longest time" "You may be right"
'She's Always a Woman (to Me)' is one of my favorite Billy Joel songs, and one that I'm sure Amber would like her husband to sing to her every day.😉
Angry Young Man... Best Billy Joel song ever!
“The Longest Time” is one that I think you guys would really enjoy. Glass Houses was the first album I ever had when I was 5 years old. I loved it! I used to dance around the house singing “You May Be Right” and “It’s Still Rock n Roll To Me”. So many greats.
Yes! The Glass Houses cassette was the first I ever bought with my own money. I was 8 or 9 at the time. Good times!
I would love to see them react to the longest time. I really like that song.
You just reminded me that I actually had the 8-track.......
@@Dave-in-TN Yeah, me too. I bought the 8-track tape first and then shortly after purchased a cassette deck for the car, along with my first cassette tape which was Glass Houses; I wore it out and bought a second tape, which I also wore out, and then I bought the vinyl record album so I could record my own cassettes!
Yes, The Longest Time is like old Barber Shop Quartet style but a very good song
You've heard 3 very different Billy Joel songs now: a piano ballad, a rock 'n roll history lesson, and a 50s doo-wop. He's got such variety and he excels at all of them! If you want to hear another really different one, go for "River of Dreams". Or "Just the Way You Are" for a classic love song.
OTOH for two more of his all-time great piano ballads, listen to "New York State of Mind" or "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"
This is a cool song.... Has very much a Frankie Valley and the 4 seasons kind of vibe.
yeah its in a 50's singer style
Yes, sounds a lot like Big Girls Don't Cry.
You're right on about the 4 Seasons vibe. It was intentional. There's a 52 min vid titled Billy Joel Performs Howard Stern (RUclips is deleting a lot of posts with links, so I can't include that). At 4:45 in the vid, Billy Joel says, in writing Uptown Girl, he heard "like a 4 Seasons thing", then he sings a bit of Rag Doll. At 9:17, he sings a bit & says "that's supposed to sound like Frankie Valli." He also points out that Rag Doll [which is about a guy loving a girl not of his social class], includes the line "I love you just the way you are."
I never made that connection until you mentioned it. But so true.
When Billy Joel was 15 years old he was a studio musician and it was him that played the piano on the Shangri-Las' hit song "Leader of the Pack."
The girl is model Christy Brinkley. They were married for a while.
Thanks for Billy Joel. Another great Billy Joel song is "It's All About Soul".
I think you should listen to 'Scenes from an Italian Restaurant'. Fabulous piano, sax, lyrics and Billy himself described it as his best song.
Billy Joel -Still Rock and roll to Me is my favorite classic songs of his
Jay would LOVE "You May Be Right." That's right up his alley. Trust me on this one. It's more rock, and kinda edgy. :)
I love "You May Be Right"! Fun song.
How about Still Rock and Roll to Me?
He would probably like Big Shot also.
I think "Just the way you are" or "Honesty" should be the next reaction for Billy Joel discography! Such a beautiful song and lyrics. It's a must
Suggested: Billy Joel - New York State of Mind - Live version. Rob will love the piano and sax.
Yes! One of his best!
Love it !!!
🧡💛💚💙
Yes to NYSOM, NO to live version the first time hearing...listen to live versions after you hear the original
All his songs are 🔥! I really love “Just the Way You Are.” The variety of music just within his catalog of HITS is mind blowing. Not to mention the songs that never achieved hit status.
I feel like I’m partial to Billy’s slower songs, but I always liked “River of Dreams,” both because the album was popular when I was in high school and because my show choir did both “River of Dreams” and “Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel),” which was always one of my favorites of his. I also love the whole Storm Front album, but “And So It Goes” is the reason I bought the CD.
I agree. Billy Joel is an Extremely versatile Singer songwriter.
River of dreams is definitely one the top of my favorites of his👍🏻
You should check out “Leave a Tender Moment Alone” from his Innocent Man album(same as this one)
The video for his “You’re Only Human (Second Wind)” is another one that stands out. Great storytelling!
"The Longest Time" should be your next Billy Joel song!
Another great by Billy Joel it's still rocking roll to me
If you like the style of this song, the harmonies & the vocal play, you'll love The 4 Seasons. Frankie Valli has a falsetto that will just blow you away.
Yesssss I love Frankie Valli
Uptown Girl is Billy's tribute to Frankie Valli...
One of my favorite songs when I was a kid in the early 80s.
New York State of Mind, Just They Way You Are and She's Always A Woman To Me are also great songs that you should react to.
I love this video! One of my favorite songs by Billy Joel is “Honesty”. It’s a slow song, but beautiful.
Another great song from Billy Joel that I've always enjoyed. You've listened to three songs that show three different styles of Billy Joel; now I have to recommend one that shows off yet another completely different side of him: "For the Longest Time." it also happens to be my favorite song by him, and really shows off his vocal talent (as you listen, keep in mind that Billy recorded ALL the vocals for it BY HIMSELF, recording multiple tracks to play together for the finished song). It is truly amazing and I have no doubt whatsoever that you will both love it!
Great song. I like almost everything he has done. One of my favs is Keepin' the Faith
Billy has great tunes for sure his tour with Elton John was awesome
Question about the baby:
"What time of the day was he born?"
I was born late at night and according to my mother, I would never sleep at night unless we were traveling and laying in the back seat. I remember the feel and sound of the car would lull my to sleep (which bled over to the daytime also).
Even now, after many decades, I hit my stride of full consciousness and energy around 10pm, no matter what I try.
Two songs you might want to check out "Always a woman" and "River of Dreams", Billy Joel's versatility and musicianship are legendary, so talented, no wonder he did get his "uptown girl".
Two of Billy Joel's deeper songs are "Down Easter Alexa" about the plight of fishermen losing their livelihood and "Second Wind" which deals with suicide.
His Frankie Valli n the Four Seasons homage!
Try their Walk Like a Man; Sherry; Big Girls Don’t Cry; Silence is Golden
Billy Joel albums The Stranger, Glass Houses, 52nd Street, Storm Front & River Of Dreams are fantastic.
Any BJ album you pick up is going to be a wonderful experience.
"Goodnight Saigon" is probably his most powerful song, since it deals with the Vietnam War. One of his more underrated songs is 1986's "Modern Woman"
I get goosebumps from Goodnight Saigon
When i listen to this song, i always think about Prinsess Diana... Rest In Peace, Lady D
I love Billy Joel... He was so good at taking on the topic of people being divided by money, and how little it really means (Isn't it funny how much successful artists do that?) Other great songs of his that I would personally recommend are "The Longest Time" (another hit in this style with the doo-wop chorus backing him up) "Only the Good Die Young" (A rocking banger) "Big Shot", "My Life" and "New York State of Mind"
Amber! I am begging you.. You like Musical Theater? Start doing Musical Mondays!!!! There are so many great songs from musicals that I would love to see you guys listen to.... "Song Played on a Solo Saxophone" from Miss Saigon, "Michael in the Bathroom" "More Than Survive" really anything from Be More Chill, "Carrie" from Carrie the Musical, "My Mother Bore Me" from Phantom... I have so many more....
For the longest time is a must from Billy Joel
