He was married to supermodel Christy Brinkley (woman in the video) and they have a daughter.
Both his wife and young daughter are in the video “A Matter of Trust.”
You need to know that she really was his “uptown girl”…… Christie would go on to become Billy’s wife, and mother of their daughter.
Billy also said Uptown Girl was also about another supermodel he dated before Christie, Elle MacPherson.
@awlins735
That might explain the Elle MacPherson pin up in the garage at the top of the video.
(That WAS Elle, right? Not Christie? I probably got it wrong.)
It is Christie in the poster. @@BlackieNuff
She was and still is one of the most beautiful women ever, she doesn't seem to age
@@AgenteusaRR I know! On Parks & Recreation, it was supposed to be an ongoing joke that nobody could understand how the dumpy aging Jerry (played by Jim O'Heir) had this impossibly young gorgeous wife (played by Christie Brinkley). But in real life she's 8 years older than he is!
Christi is still absolutely gorgeous at 70!
Billy Joel said the song was inspired by the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. He married Christie Brinkley in 1985 and they divorced in 1994. You still have lots of great songs to hear by Billy Joel including "She's Always a Woman", "Just the Way You Are", "Big Shot", "Only the Good Die Young", "River of Dreams", and "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me".
Yes, it had the Frankie Valli vibe.
Specifically borrowed the riff from the Four Seasons "Let's Hang On".
All Classics. But "Still Rock and Roll" is *FIRE* !!!
"Honesty" "She's Got A Way" "You May Be Right" "She's Always A Woman" "Just The Way You Are" "New York State Of Mind" "Movin' Out" "Vienna" "My Life" "The Stranger" and his brand new release "Turn The Lights Back On" are all so good that you could pick one with your eyes closed and be happy with what you hear!
I would add We didn't Start the fire, but they already saw that. So, my addition would be River of Dreams for another type of music.
I'd like to add Laura and Rosalinda to this list. Both at the top of my list.
@@lindalee5866Those are two more great choices Linda, especially "Rosalinda's Eyes" !
and Until the Night
"Keepin' The Faith" too 🕺
Next Billy Joel ought to be "For the Longest Time". Another upbeat classic you'll really like, about coming back to love. :)
My Favorite Billy Joel song. :)
And with seven of the best background singers he could find. 😂
Seriously, if they love his vocals in this, FTLT needs to be next on the list.
The official video of this song 🎵 is brilliant.
This song was Billy Joel's tribute to Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. The song even got shades of Rag Doll. A banger song indeed!!!
Yes, this is tribute to Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons. "The Longest Time" is Billy's tribute to the Doo Wop era
One little tidbit of info is that this song was originally titled Uptown Girls as at the time he was surrounded by ladies like Christy Brinkley, Whitney Houston and his at the time girlfriend Elle MacPherson. The song was written initially to be about his then relationship with MacPherson but then also became about his soon to be marriage to Brinkley.
And NO unlike what people are saying in comments Brinkley was NOT Billy Joel's wife at the time of this video. At the time he was dating Elle MacPherson, another supermodel. This song and video came out in 1983 and Brinkly and Joel got married in 1985.
He released an album in 1983 called "An Innocent Man". He made all the songs with a 1950' sound. Ioh, and when this video was made, she was his wife.
That was a great album. One of my favourites.
A great album, and imo, one of his most underrated songs. I've always loved the An Innocent Man song, but it gets no airplay on the classic rock stations I've found.
No, they didn't get married until 1985. This album came out in 1983 and the latest this video would have been done would have been 1984.
Billy Joel has a lot of hits with a big variety of sounds and styles.
Christy Brinkley was probably the most popular Super Model in the world for a while there and also had a big part in the movie Vacation, with Chevy Chase, as the hot girl who revved up Chevy's character. o
Billy Joel wrote this as a flipside to the Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons song "Rag Doll." This song has 1950s and 60s rock vibe. The video reminds me of the movie version of Grease (1978).
How was this the flipside to a Four Seasons song? A "flipside" is the actual other side of a 45 rpm record. The flipside to "Rag Doll" is "Silence Is Golden"
@@andreaschmall5560it also means: another aspect or version of something, especially its reverse.
@@davidnorth-martino If it's being used in the context of a 45 record it's misleading unless you change the wording...for example "And on the flip side of the sentiment of the song Rag Doll." Don't mean to be nitpicky but yeah.
You still have his biggest hits to look forward to, honesty, always a woman, still rock and roll to me, only the good die young and so much more
The 80s were the best years in my life.. peace and good greetings from Russia to everyone
NEXT- RIVER OF DREAMS Official music video OR 1994 Grammy Awards performance. You will LOVE it!!
Oh, that’s Christie Brinkley. His uptown gal. His wife. Mother of their child. ❤😊
The most soulful Billy Joel song, including a majorly soulful vocal performance is called "New York State of Mind" and all the reactors react to the live version he did on the British program "Old Grey Whistle Test". It will blow your minds. So much soul and so much beauty. "Leave a Tender Moment Alone" is another soulful vocal from this album.
Great Reaction BARS & BARBELLS! Another video with Christy Brinkley is
A Matter of Trust! It’s a barebones setting just pure power vocals by Billy Joel!🎸🙏🏻
Billy Joel married that uptown girl - Christie Brinkley!! NOW - "Goodnight Saigon" needs to be next!!
A Matter of Trust is an awesome rocking song.
Billy Joel always did great videos to accompany his songs... This
one was no different... It had a great song with high energy... I'd like to suggest that you look at the song that he does by the name of " Pressure "... It's another high energy video and a great song by Billy Joel... Another great reaction guys... See you on the next one... Keep Being Awesome !!!...
The supermodel would be Christi Brinkley....his wife for 9 years....whom he wrote the song for....she is also in the video for the song A Matter of Trust along with their daughter
Billy Joel adds the doo wop singing that he grew up with
Any man/boy alive in the 80s knows Christie Brinkley! Especially from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issues lol. Awesome reaction guys. Always love Billy Joel. Your selections the last 2 days are awesome. Rush, ZZ Top and Joel... Awesome!!! GO BOSTON BRUINS!!! 🍻🤟👏
I had 2 posters on my wall, when I was in the boy category.
Growing up my 3 year old brother would dance whenever this song came on the radio. Damn I love envisioning my baby brother dancing to this song! It brings me back.
River of Dreams...another Billy Joel...again different vibes...Love it....💛
Christy Brinkley, who also appeared in Billy's other music video for the song , " Keeping the Faith "
This song was a love letter/tribute to the music style of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. Frankie Valli actually sang the theme song to Grease in the movie. Supermodel, Christie Brinkley, went onto to have a small cameo as a "mystery blonde" in the 1983 comedy movie "National Lampoon's Vacation". Boyband, Westlife, covered Uptown Girl in 2001.
Thanks guys. This is my favorite Billy Joel song.
The movie GREASE was very popular at the time. Ive youve seen the movie, youll know the nod to the movie. Also that girl is Christy Brinkley. She was an international model at the time. Think project runway. That was his wife at that time.
Grease and this song are years apart 😂
Should look into "The Longest Time" by Billy Joel. One of my favorite vocal performances by Billy Joel.
This is from one of Billy’s best albums if not the best for the variety of music as he used it to do take offs on other musical groups. This one was a version produced in the manner of “The Four Seasons with Frankie Valli“. They were very popular in the 60s and 70s and preceded the Beatles. Billy had just come off of dating Elle Macpherson and was with Christie. According to him he started writing the song before he married Christie and it was called “uptown girls”. Of course Christie Brinkley was a supermodel and his wife at the time. It’s incredible how she looks at 70.
For Billy Joel, I would recommend New York State of Mind and Baby Grand. The second is a duet with Ray Charles and not to be missed.
Just the way you are! My favorite.
The Stranger and Stiletto are also great songs from Billy Joels catalog.
This is from his "An Innocent Man" album from the early 1980's. The entire album is a homage to late 50's to early 60's musical styles. Highly recommended.
Such a fun song. Loved hearing again. Love Billy Joel.
I met Christy in downtown Chicago back in the mid-1980s when I was going to college. She was having a fashion show at a major department store. My friend and I cut class and met her. She was playing Billy Joel songs since she had just married him. She was very nice and a total babe, of course!!!
Christie Brinkley was Billy Joel's wife at the time. It was one of 5 guys she married besides being a model.✌️❤️
They had their turn until she got older.
They were just dating at the time, they didn't get married until a couple years later.
Such a fun song! Always lifts your spirits!
My favorite Billy songs are completely different in style. The Old Grey Whistle Test of "NY State of Mind" is a showcase of his piano skills and voice, with a full band and an amazing sax solo. In the song "And So It Goes" it's stripped down, just Billy and his piano on a bare stage, spilling his heart out.
Great song and reaction guys, another fun Billy tune is Matter of Trust.
Christy Brinkley was the supermodel in that video. She and Billy were married after that. They had a daughter. Later divorced, sad!! The Longest Time and Honesty are two of my favorites by him. So much talent.
love how the homies on the bikes backed off once they realized one of the boys had his eyes on the prize. lol. and even helped make him look epic in the headlights, excellent wingmen. around 7:10 or so
Billy Joel went through phases in his career, his piano music was , I believe his mostly earlier work, which I love, like Piano Man, this son is more poppy, it was much later in his career, a different part of it. Still a great song, just a different time. ❤❤
Thanks for reacting!❤❤
"Just The Way You Are" won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year in 1979. Others "You May Be Right" "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me" "New York State of Mind" "She's Always a Woman to Me" "Don't Ask Me Why" "Vienna" ... the list goes on and on.
Christie Brinkley was every boy's dream when she appeared on Sport's Illustrated Swimsuit cover!!
You got to check out his official video for the song " A Matter of Trust"
Uptown girl sounds like a Frankie Valley and four seasons tune👍
Except that Billy's voice is much better than Frankie Valli's.
@@hippiemama52LOL!!!! Don't think so!!
Great song. A tribute to the four seasons.
"Tell Her About It" is another good song with a great video from around the same time this song came out. Also Christie Brinkley appears in his video for the song "River of Dreams".
I just saw him live a few days ago here in Tampa. He was with Sting and I saw him play this song.
Billy joels videos are the best
for Sam's liking the light and fluffy sound, give The Longest Time a try, a throwback to the the street corner groups
Moving Out is one I think you would like. Fun and upbeat.
It nearly floored me when U guys said you "never heard of Christie Brinkley" !! Guess I'm gettin old. I'm a macho type of guy (not in Phil's league) but Brinkley was one of those Iconic models in the 80s. Literally a household name. Guess time passes everyone by...
Innocent Man and A Matter if Trust is a must listen to ❤
His vocal range is also great The Longest Time.
"Only the Good Die Young" is one of my favorites! btw He did marry Christie Brinkley.
Billy is a master of writing in different styles. This one is in the style of the Four Seasons.
The first music video I saw on MTV!
I love this song by Billy Joel ❤️
If you want to hear his vocal ability, check out the longest time. Every sound you hear in that song comes from his voice.
Lovin' the Billy Joel reactions, guys! He has so many great songs--you're in for a long ride...my top favs are 'Angry Young Man' and 'The Entertainer'. You'd love 'em! Cheers, T
Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel were dating at the time they shot this video together (which she did for free - which got her in trouble with the Screen Actor's Guild. She had to join SAG after her appearance in National Lampoon's Vacation) ... I believe she's appeared in at least 3 Billy Joel music videos (most prominently, of course, in "Uptown Girl")
Billy Joel's got an AMAZING song library which y'all should definitely explore further (I love the songs which are kind of throwback tunes to the old tyme styles of doo-wop and 50's rock)
This song is paying direct tribute and homage to the Four Seasons early sound-most notably the song Walk Like A Man and Big girls don't Cry-mimicking Franki Valli's vocal style.
“ You may be right”
Thank you for this one! Next should be "Movn' Out"...another "different" one from Billy.
Check out Billy Joel's music video "A Matter of Trust". FIRE!!!
Thanks for another great reaction video! If you’d like a different vibe from his more poppy songs, “Goodnight Saigon” is a great choice.
There are a ton of great songs from Billy Joel. You honestly can't go wrong with almost any of his catalog.
I'd suggest "River of Dreams", "Angry Young Man" or "My Life".
Hey Phil and Sam, some other Billy Joel songs that you should definitely check out are:
Allentown
Keeping The Faith
It's Still Rock'N'Roll To Me
Tell Her About It
My Life
A Matter Of Trust
The Piano Man
This was Billy's tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Check them out. Try their hit Dawn.
Christie Brinkley was in the movie National Lampoon's Vacation the same year this song came out.
This & Piano Man are my all time favorite Billy Joel tunes 👊👊👊👊👊👊👊
I always felt that this song was an homage to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, a legendary band from the 60’s. You may have heard of them from the movie and play about them, Jersey Boys. Anyway, thanks for checking this song out, but you have an awful long way to go to get thru Billy’s catalog!!! #billyjoel #frankievalli #fourseasons
Christie Brinkley was huge. She may have been the biggest supermodel in the world at the time. She’s also in the movie “Vacation” with Chevy Chase.
another one that's in my album collection library!
Christy Brinkley was also in the movie “National Lampoon’s Vacation “ starring Chevy Chase .
That whole album, Innocent Man, was written and performed in a 60s old-school style. Lotta doo-whop on many of the songs.
During her modeling career Christie Brinkley was a CoverGirl model. So the Uptown Cosmetics billboard is also a play on the billboards for CoverGirl cosmetics that were common in the 1980s (CoverGirl ads in print magazines were also prolific at the time). I do like your observation that the Uptown Cosmetics ad is juxtaposed the neon sign for the Downtown Gas station.
Love it
One of my favorites that's similar but way better to this vibe from Billy is Matter of Trust.
The beautiful Christie Brinkley top model, her appearance in National Lampoons Vacation is classic !
"Tell Her About It" is another perfect song like this one 🎵
I would recommend that you do "The Stranger" A great song.
For s great vocal performance by Billy Joel, you should try "Leave A Tender Moment Alone". A beautiful ballad and great vocals.
I was lucky to be able to talk to Christy Brinkley a few times on her facebook fan page circa 10 years ago. She was very accessible for a while there and very friendly. o
Summer Highland Falls live in Germany. It's one of my favorite songs of his and during that particular video he explains the meaning of the lyrics to the audience. It's brilliant.
Glad to see you enjoying George Carlin. Great reaction
You are truly just getting started on your Billy Joel journey. Here are just a few of his songs you should consider: Captain Jack, Only The Good Die Young, Big Shot, Honesty, New York State Of Mind, and For The Longest Time.
Billy had such an extensive catalog of great songs that it is hard to pick one out. For something totally different I would suggest Goodnight Saigon, which was a song about the Vietnam War.
Christy Brinkley, they were married at one time. Love me some Billy. Listen to Only The Good Die Young. Awesome.🙂✌️
This was during the Christie Brinkley period. No more suffering artist! He's all happy and loved ! lol
I loved this tune when it came out. An 80s song with a 50s flair.
New subscriber here. Love your channel. As others have undoubtedly pointed out by now, this song was done in the style of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Imagine how Billy must have felt years later when Frankie Valli came out on stage and sang a portion of this song for Billy as he sat in the audience. I believe it was a Billy Joel tribute concert. Great reaction, folks!
I never saw Phil smile so much during a reaction. It may not be the best song, but it does accomplish the happy vibes.
I am a huge Billy Joel fan and have enjoyed the videos you have done. I would reccomend that you continue to explore his catalog. Some of my favorites include River of Dreams, The Longest Time, And So It Goes, Turn the Lights Back On, You're My Home, The Stranger, Downeaster Alexa, Only the Good Die Young, just to name a few
There are dozens and dozens more to explore by Billy Joel, but there's three in particular that made/make impactful social commentary; Allentown, Goodnight Saigon, Downeaster Alexa. All three talk about important topics while still becoming hits.
The song is a musical homage to The 4 Seasons. Check out their earlier songs like "Dawn". "Sherry", or "Let's Hang On" and then connect the dots to Uptown Girl. Apparently, you were unaware that Christie Brinkley became Billy Joels wife.
Billy is also a very creative motorcycle builder.
