Billy met super model Christie Brinkley (the "uptown girl" in the video) and ended up recording a whole album of songs that were basically about her! She became a regular star in his music videos, they ended up getting married, had a daughter, stayed together for a long time, then got divorced, yet still remain very close friends to this day.
I was actually originally inspired by Elle Macpherson who Billy also dated prior to Christie and was originally called Uptown Girls, but I suppose he dropped the S in its finished form when he started dating Christie.
Billy Joel used this as a tribute to Frankie Valli + the 4 Seasons. BJ says this is 1 of his favirites he likes to sing in concerts. 😎 BJ originally named this as Uptown Girls bc he was dating Elle Macpherson + befriended Whitney Houston + Christie Brinkley. BJ + EM broke up. BJ broke up the title to Uptown Girl. The breakdancers here led to the dancers in Everybody Wants to Rule the World performed by Tears for Fears in 1985, 2 years later. In the 90s, Backstreet Boys sang this in a concert at a tribute to Billy Joel. CBS broadcasted this!

I read somewhere that he doesn't perform this anymore at concerts because he no longer can hit the high notes. Maybe someone who has been to a recent Joel concert can provide some recon on this. Great stuff as always from him. He and Huey Lewis and the News provided a brief, but great, neo-doo-wop vibe in the early '80s that was a refreshing throwback. The '50s nostalgia craze in the '70s mostly thrived in films and TV, but beyond the "Grease" soundtrack, it never really penetrated the music charts significantly beyond some U.S. new wave bands, like Blondie, the B-52s, and the Go-Gos, who dabbled mostly in'60s surf music sounds, but also did some '50s stuff.
