Nah! You people aint listening. Its about a guy dating a high school beauty in a small town, but shes leaving, she was always gonna, and they spend a last bitter-sweet night together.
I lost my wife 15 years ago. She committed suicide. She was 25, i was 38. I could not get ovrr losing her. I could imagine to take her home with me, dress her up. I am not a creep or a necropheliac, but I just was so sad about losing her forever. It took me years to get over her. In fact, just last week i was finally able to watch pictures i had of hrr and hang up a painting i once made of her. Its just a human reaction to a sudden loss at a terrible young age. Bless you Anne, hope to see you in heaven one day...i still love you!
Another one of rock's greatest recent losses. He was an icon from the 70's on. Miss him and his music so much. I hope you do "Don't Come Around Here No More" (just for the Alice in Wonderland-ish video!). "Running Down a Dream" and "Learning to Fly" are also fantastic songs. Fun fact - the part of Mary Jane in this video was played by actress Kim Basinger.
My husband and I were just talking about him! We were on a 6 hour drive and one of his songs came on. Then we heard him on every rock station all weekend. Now Jordan and Amber are listening to him too. Freaky! It's so sad that he continues his tour with a broken hip. He was on stage performing with a broken hip! Who does that? He didn't want to disappoint his fans so he kept taking more pain medicine and sleep medicine. He also had emphysema so more medicine. I think he also had a heart condition too. Sucks! I really loved his music 🎶
there is no bad Tom Petty song. I was fortunate enough to see him (from the second row!) 3 months before he passed I'm grateful to have heard this song, one of my favourites for sure
You have no idea how amazing Tom Petty is. I actually cried when he passed away. So many great songs that I can't even name them all. Thank goodness we still have his music to listen to, enjoy, and remember him by.
Along these lines you should try The Traveling Wilburys. It a Super group with Tom Petty, George Harrison(The Beatles), Roy Orbson, Bob Dylan, and Jeff Lynn( Electric Light Orchestra)...To me all of this groups music is great they only put out 2 Albums. The more common songs would be Handle With Care, End of the Line, or The Wilbury Twist.
Yes, but before you do Traveling Wilburys, you need to react to Roy Orbison. Songs are: "Crying" (1961 studio recording.) "Oh, Pretty Woman" (1964 studio recording.) Then you will be ready for The Traveling Wilburys. You want the videos for these songs, in this order: 1. "Handle With Care" 2. "End Of The Line" Everything will be more meaningful if you do these things in the order prescribed.
Tom Petty is absolutely iconic. Decades of good music. Definitely check out his work with The Traveling Wilburys, every member is a legendary singer-songwriter. The music world's heart broke the day he passed away.
No collection of TP reactions can be contemplated without “Refugee” an absolute banger, and the beginning of my lifelong Tom Petty fandom back in 1979.
I love that the dead body is Kim Basinger. She was everywhere in the late 80's and 90's. She played Eminem's mom in _8 Mile_ and was just amazing in _L.A. Confidential._
"Don't Come Around Here No More" is another great TP + HB song. "Learning To Fly" is also a great song (not to be confused with the Pink Floyd or the Foo Fighters songs by the same name - three completely different songs).
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers collaborated with David Stewart of The Eurythmics on Don't Come Around Here No More. Petty and Stewart share songwriter credit. Stewart played sitar and synthesizer and sang backing vocals.
Tom Petty is the epitome of coolness. He used to always wear these dark sunglasses. He has many great songs in his catalogue ... among them "Breakdown" and his duet with Stevie Nicks "Stop Dragging My Heart". RIP Tom - you left us way too soon.
He was one of the few to stand against super high album and concert ticket prices. He knew a teenager can't afford $300 to see a show ! When I was teen we were flipping and moaning over $10-12 a seat.
I think many of us always heard last dance with Mary Jane, one more time to kill the pain... was about Marijuana... and yep Amber got me!!! I've never seen the video!
I grew up with Tom Petty, he went to my high school (although a few years before me). He played all of the local bars and events. When he finally made it with his first release, I swore up and down that he hadn't, but we were hearing his music because he was a local boy. Was I ever wrong!

yes, I concur about your top 2 choices. Maybe 'cause I'm 67 and looking with reality at the end of my line. Not morbid, just real, and the more we talk about it, the more we can accept that it REALLY will happen and we may as well make peace with it.

Petty and his band were always good at bringing out the most attractice sounds from their instruments, the sweetly crunchy twang of ringing guitar chords
from songfacts - Petty never said what this song is about, but there are two common interpretations. It could be about Petty's divorce from his wife Jane, which happened a year before this was recorded. Another possibility is that it is about marijuana, as "Mary Jane" is slang for pot and the lyrics refer to killing the pain, which the drug is known for. Mike Campbell offered this explanation: "My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it's a drug reference, and if that's what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song."
Or its both... alot of people use substances to dull the pain of life including breakups.. but eventually they have to deal with reality. So to overcome the breakup you have to overcome the pain and quit using the things you used to dull the pain.

In this case I feel it takes away from the music for the first time listener.
Tom Petty was and will always be one of America's greatest songwriters. His catalog is extensive and there isn't a dud in the bunch. I am 62 and was around for his breakout album with the Heartbreakers- Damn The Torpedoes and was instantly a fan. He continued to drop iconic songs and perform right up until his tragic death. RIP Tom, you left us with a lot of songs that are timeless.
Tom Petty is one of my all time favorites to see in concert. I saw him 5 times, one was cancelled or it would have been 6. Absolutely was fantastic in concert, so fun to see. There are soooo many songs in his catalog for you to hear.
When i first heard this song on the radio, I thought it was a new song by America. Someone told me it was Tom Petty, and I didn’t believe her. The harmony sounds just like the group America. You should check them out. They are among the great harmony rock groups. Eg: You can do magic, Ventura highway, I need you, Sister golden hair surprise, Daisy Jane, Lonely People, Tin Man, Horse with no name, The Border, …
Tom Petty is an artist I haven't seen much of in the reaction vids. He's a crazy good song writer and is on a surprising number of records by other artists. He has a whole catalog of fantastic songs. A lot of reactors are sleeping on Tom Petty.
Actress Kim Bassinger does a GREAT job in this video! LOL You picked a good one pre-Halloween! And, yes, there is a double entendre to the name "Mary Jane". 😁
This man has been my soulmate since 1979 in regards to music. I've been waiting for you 2 to react to Tom Petty. I cried for weeks when he died. Thank you for this
The wedding dress scene is taken loosely from a scene in Great Expectations by Charles Dickens and Cold Moon by Charles Bukowski. The video won an award for Best Male Video in 1994.
I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in concert around 2003 at an outdoor concert in Kansas. The weather was perfect, the sound was perfect, Tom Petty was amazing and so likeable and cool. All in all it was a perfect night.
His song “You don’t know how it feels” has to be next- More fantastic harmonica! Also him snd Stevie Nicks duet “Stop draggin’ my heart around.” Please- you’ll love! No more scary at all Rob-😆 💜💙👍
I only saw Tom Petty live once, just a few months before he died. Hyde Park, London - Stevie Nicks also on the bill so of course she joined them on stage for Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. Made my day! 😁
A year ago I went on chantix to quit smoking, it gives you very vivid dreams. One night, all night long in my dreams, Tom Petty followed me around singing that song. All night long Tom was my shadow.
My favourite is I won't back down. I really enjoy his drawl. You will also find him in the supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylon and Jeff Lynn. If it freaks you out, consider that it could be allegorical. His relationship is dead.
Yes, he sounds southern..he is! A native of Gainesville Florida. He has a song, Southern Accents that is so moving. Heck, he has SO many great songs. If harmonica is your thing, check out You Don't Know How it Feels. A great duet with Stevie Nicks (apart from Stop Dragging My Heart Around) is Insider..just beautiful. Tom can ROCK, but will give you tender just as easily.
He’s an American Icon and legend who has worked with pretty much everyone at one time or another. AND you wouldn’t know it from looking at him but he didn’t take shit from no one ESPECIALLY record labels and producers. He even fought other artists fight against their labels. He definitely did things his way or no way.
I bought 'American Girl' when it first came out in 1977 in England during the punk/ new wave era. I was at school and in England they were classed as a new wave band. Its still my favourite song by them and one of my all time favourite songs. Also try listening to the live version of Refugee.
Strangely I was in California when I discovered Tom Petty and his You're Gonna Get It album. A long way from Gainesville, but bought every album he put out after that. My only regret is that I never saw them in concert.
You guys have only heard 2 tom petty songs. There is a large catalog of his albums. He is always with his band the heartbreakers even when only his name is mentioned. One of his first hits is a song called breakdown from 1977. My favorite is a song called runnin down a dream. Cool songs. Miss tom greatly. RIP!
He always had a great vibe. Every song he wrote and performed. Love "You Don't Know How It Feels" Also check out some music he did when he teamed up with a few other GREAT artists: Roy Orbison, George Harrison of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The group was called The Traveling Wilburys. Never hear too much about them anymore. All greats in their own right.
You both have to react to these three Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers songs. Refugee, American Girl, and I Need To Know. All fantastic songs. Refugee is mellow but still rocking, while American Girl and I Need To Know are faster paced and have some very underrated guitar work.
There's a boat load of great Tom Petty tunes, from Breakdown, American Girl, Refugee, Here Comes My Girl, Runnin Down A Dream, A Face In The Crowd, Learning To Fly, Room At The Top, Saving Grace, and many more. All mellow smooth bluesy rock & roll!
Tom Petty's music career was fantastic! Yes that is southern twang, he was from Florida. A lot of people put him in the punk genre, I just call it gooooood rock and roll!
As mentioned below. You two absolutely need to react to "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". Written by Petty for Stevie Nicks, an awesome, amazing, fantastic duet with two super talented rock icons!! I have seen it suggested in the comments over and over. Please take the time to react. You will both LOVE it!!
Jay, you are correct about this being a later song. It was released in 1993, while the group had been going strong since the 1970s. As creepy as the video is, it won the 1994 MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video. An unusual fact about this song is that it was first released as a cut on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Greatest Hits album. It was something of a treat for the fans to buy a greatest hits album and find that it included an entirely new song, and it was not misplaced as the song quickly made the charts and did become a big hit. So many great songs from Tom Petty, both solo and with the Heartbreakers, but one of my favorites is "Running Down a Dream".
That's actually been a rather common practice - to include a good new song on a greatest hits album. Kenny Rogers, Donna Summer, Paul Simon, Earth Wind & Fire, Abba and more have big hits that started out that way. 🙂
The best Petty song, by far, is Breakdown. But it is one of those songs that you have to blast! Turn the volume up on it! Petty was overshadowed but still excellent as a member of the Traveling Wilburys. A George Harrison (Beatles) super group that featured the greatest lyricist (Bob Dylan), one of the best vocalists of all time (Roy Orbison), Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra) and Jim Keltner on drums. Mary Jane is Marijuana.
No words strong enough to express how much I love this song. It's even better when you match the lyrics and the video together and realize the relationship between the two characters.
Tom Petty was one of best long time singer song writers from Gainsville, Fla. but moved to California to produce his many albums. He had a unique voice with a little twang in some songs. He was also a founding member of the Traveling Wilburys, with George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan and the Voice.....Roy Orbison. They made a couple albums, but Tom Petty was a rock legend with his band the Heartbreakers. He put on great concerts, and sadly was gone too soon. RIP Tom Petty. I hope you are jamming with Roy. Duet with Stevie Nick's great song; Stop Draggin my Heart Around.
I listened to Tom Petty in high school. When my 2 daughters were in middle school all they asked for from Santa was Tom Petty cd’s. I think that says a lot about his music. RIP Tom
Also want to hear "Refugee" "American Girl" "I Wont Back Down" "Learning To Fly" "Into The Great Wide Open" "Even The Losers" "Free Fallin'" "Don't Do Me Like That" "Don't Come Around Here No More" "You Got Lucky" "LSD" "Runnin' Down A Dream" and many more.
Suggestion for The Traveling Wilburys “Handle With Care” “Not Alone Anymore”…It’s a supergroup consisting of George Harrison (The Beatles), Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne (ELO).
oh, Tom Petty is definitely southern. He's originally from Gainesville, Florida. I lived there when I was younger, and his big 30th anniversary concert for the Heartbreakers was one of my first concerts.
This is definitely my favorite Tom Petty song! And that's saying a lot considering how many great songs there are in his catalog. I first heard the song as I was pulling into my parking spot at work one morning. He tells such great stories in his songs, so I just sat in my car and listened until the end. I wasn't disappointed! Don't Come Around Here No More is another great song, with another great style, and I know Amber will love The Waiting! Love you guys! 💖🎸
Tom Petty is a legend. It hit me really hard when he died; I grew up with his music. Caught me off guard. I don't think I've ever been driving without a Tom Petty song playing at some point, whether I put it on or the DJ picked it out. You should check out "American Girl." And if you want some great live Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, check out the Superbowl 42 halftime show. Best halftime show ever.

Enjoyed Them in Concert at Alpine Valley (way back in the Day!)
Actress Kim Bassinger does a GREAT job in this video! LOL You picked a good one pre-Halloween! And, yes, there is a double entendre to the name "Mary Jane". 😁
At least someone knows what Last Dance with Mary Jane means 99% don't understand what the song/story is about because they are too young
This man has been my soulmate since 1979 in regards to music. I've been waiting for you 2 to react to Tom Petty. I cried for weeks when he died. Thank you for this
Oh please react to "American Girl", its early and awesome TP. He wrote hits like almost nobody else (RIP) and his band the Heartbreakers are so great.
Everyone mentions the big ones, and rightlfullyy so. But one I love almost as much as any is "Into the Great Wide Open". Check it out!
His song “You don’t know how it feels” has to be next- More fantastic harmonica! Also him snd Stevie Nicks duet “Stop draggin’ my heart around.” Please- you’ll love! No more scary at all Rob-😆 💜💙👍
I second Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. Tom made Stevie Nicks an "Honorary Heartbreaker."
That or American Girl
You Don't Know How It Feels is my favorite! You will love watching him play harmonica!
Oh my goodness! Talk a about an amazing rabbit hole to go down! So many wonderful songs by Tom Petty.
George, Jeff and Ringo are in the video of I won't back down
When Tom died, I cried. I still cry for him. Music will never quite be the same again. I’ll feel the same when Willie goes.
This song is such a vibe. Especially when the harmonica and guitar harmonize.
You guys are awesome. Here comes my girl and running down a dream are a must Tom Petty !!
Tom is playing the lead guitar and harmonica a multi talented person
Felt a chill run down my spine when she opened her eyes wide at the very end. -- a nice Hitchcockian touch.
Yeah, it was first thought they were New Wave because of when they showed up. Boy, were they wrong!
Strangely I was in California when I discovered Tom Petty and his You're Gonna Get It album. A long way from Gainesville, but bought every album he put out after that. My only regret is that I never saw them in concert.
Tom plays the harmonica around his neck while playing the guitar and singing!
Love "You Don't Know How It Feels"
Also check out some music he did when he teamed up with a few other GREAT artists: Roy Orbison, George Harrison of The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The group was called The Traveling Wilburys. Never hear too much about them anymore. All greats in their own right.
One of the best "super groups" to have ever existed
You Got Lucky is my favorite Tom Petty tune. Running Down A Dream and Don't Come Around Here are also great.
Running down a Dream is the best on a road trip playlist!
Indiana girl here and I can't tell you how the crowd went crazy when he played this at the concert in Indy.....one of my favorite concerts. R.I.P..Tom
You both have to react to these three Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers songs. Refugee, American Girl, and I Need To Know. All fantastic songs. Refugee is mellow but still rocking, while American Girl and I Need To Know are faster paced and have some very underrated guitar work.
This one of my favorite songs by him
Since you both love harmonica I’d say try Blues Traveler. The lead singer is an amazing harmonica player. Start with Runaround.
The Mountains Win Again, Hook, But Anyway, Carolina Blues, Regarding Steven…
I just commented this too! Truly great harmonica playing!
"Into The Great Wide Open" and "You Don't know How It Feels" are some other great songs from Tom Petty.
Tom petty is one of my favorite artists of all time. He is one of the greatest American song writers ever. Please go down this rabbit hole
Tom Petty's music career was fantastic! Yes that is southern twang, he was from Florida. A lot of people put him in the punk genre, I just call it gooooood rock and roll!
My favorite Tom Petty song! Good show.
Kim Basinger was soooo young in this one.
One of the greatest songs ever! So thank you 4 this one!
It's a metaphor...drugs, last dance with Mary Jane, yeah...and Kim BASINGER, limp, lol
'Learning To Fly'!!!! Trust me!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
1:31 my best friend and roommate in college was from Indiana and we always screamed the first few lyrics from this song!!! Loved it!!!
LOVE Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. In my top 5 all time. Huge catalog and it’s all great and very diverse sounds.
FINALLY! Someone reacting to this song. My favorite song from Tom Petty. So sad when he died a few years ago
For harmonic playing, check out Blues Traveler. Hook and Runaround are two of their most popular songs
Breakdown live....the crowd takes over it is sooooooo coooool
The best Petty song, by far, is Breakdown. But it is one of those songs that you have to blast! Turn the volume up on it!
Petty was overshadowed but still excellent as a member of the Traveling Wilburys. A George Harrison (Beatles) super group that featured the greatest lyricist (Bob Dylan), one of the best vocalists of all time (Roy Orbison), Jeff Lynne (Electric Light Orchestra) and Jim Keltner on drums.
Mary Jane is Marijuana.
Breakdown is my favorite! Followed by American girl. Both are a total mood.
“You don’t know how it feels “
is another good one from
Tom Petty
Duet with Stevie Nick's great song; Stop Draggin my Heart Around.
another good one.. Stevie Nicks with Tom Petty, singing" stop dragging my heart around"
ya tom gave that song to STEVIE
This is just one of MANY songs from him. He was a genius !!! So many to choose from. 😎
Running Down a Dream is a Tom Petty classic! If you like the harmonica then check out You Don't Know How It Feels!
Most hilarious reaction ever. First time I saw the video all I could do was think What the...??!!!
Petty was a legend in his own time. Still keep his CDs in my car and play them regularly.
I listened to Tom Petty in high school. When my 2 daughters were in middle school all they asked for from Santa was Tom Petty cd’s. I think that says a lot about his music. RIP Tom
Tom Petty is just brilliant, as are the Heartbreakers.
Dont get no better then Tom Petty ! You know all of Florida misses him !
So glad I got to see him live a couple of times
Tom Petty & Heartbreakers are definitely worth exploring further. They can hold their with the big dogs.
Running Down a Dream is a must from Tom.
Try out the Traveling Wilburys…
Tom Petty
George Harrison (Beatles)
Jeff Lynne (ELO)
Bob Dylan
& Roy Orbison
“End of the Line” or “Handle With Care”
So many great hits... At least 20 + solid hits.. #RIP #TomPetty
