He passed away on the eve of my 60th birthday. I never thought he would not be here for my 60’ and 70’s and beyond. It sucks living in a world without Tom Petty.
We've lost too many fantastic musicians before their time. Whenever I listen to a favorite song I relive the feeling of loss when I remember that the artist is gone.
This was a "contractual obligation" song. Tom was leaving MCA Records. It was going to be a greatest hits release but the requirement was for 2 new songs. One was a cover of Something In The Air. The other was Last Dance With Mary Ann (an original song). The fact that Tom could write such a great song just to fulfill a contract should tell you something about how great a songwriter he was.
One of Petty's top hits of the 90's ,thanks for playing . It's in his top five of all time, which is saying quite a bit, since he had so, so many. RIP Tom. video is much better.
Record company asked for a single to add to the Greatest hits album. Petty said, how can it be o Greatest hits if it hasn't been written yet. Then he goes and writes this hit song. A legend
Huge Petty fan here and this is a top5 Petty song for me any day. I absolutely love Mike Campbell's work on this song. I wait for the riff at 4:25 every time I hear this song. Just killer.
Funny. It was just a quick throwaway song required for the "best of" album and turned out to be one of his best I think. Kim Bassinger stars in the odd video.
@@Kayjee17 - Still one of my favourite music video clips too, nearly 40 years later! 😊 Based around 'Alice In Wonderland', with Tom as the 'Mad Hatter' 😀
Glad to see you getting some good distorted guitar. "Breakdown" and "Running Down a Dream" are both rockers with moods distinctly different from "Mary Jane" . If you'd rather try something trippy as hell with a wild video to match, go for "Don't Come Around Here No More", where Tom appears as the Mad Hatter.
I AM SO GLAD YOU DID THIS SONG!! As much as I love everything Tom Petty's ever done, this is definitely my favorite! I heard it for the first time when I was pulling into my parking place at work. It had just started playing on the radio, and I sat in my car and listened to it until it was over. I'll never forget it, because the song made such an impact on me! If you want to listen to another great one, on RUclips or even by yourself, check out 'I Need To Know', from his Greatest Hits, or from his album, 'You're Gonna Get It!'. It's a short song, but it's a serious rocker!! Lisa 💖🎸
Imagine writing a new song for a greatest hits album that had never been heard and never been a hit. And then it became an absolute mind blowing hit song.
I was so mad I missed that one, but I had two pre-school kids at the time, and no baby sitter money back then. I missed the Black Crows concert too, and being an extra in a League of Their Own all for the same reason. 😆
one of my fave tunes from one of my fave artists - I liked this as it differed from the other stuff that he was doing at this time - it also reminds of the part of the 90s sound scape that I enjoyed.....gone too soon and an avoidable death 😞
Out of all of his great songs, this is my favorite. When I bought his greatest hits album, I loved it the first time I heard it. And yes, you need to now watch the video on your own. It's subject matter may be disturbing to some people but it's like a car accident where you can't look away. I read that actress Kim Basinger said it was one of her hardest acting roles. She said doing what she had to do was not easy. On a side note, I just turned 70 last month and it's weird every time I watch this video and see her in it. It's surreal because she is 8 months older than I am.
Another one of them songs, i had to turn off my Radio on the way home so i could keep this in my head, figured it out when i got home on the set list next day.,
My daughter when she was really young used to laugh iike crazy when he sings she's standing in her underwear. She thought it was hilarious! Believe he was talking about Marijuana. "Mary Jane"
The official video is a must for this one!! 🎤🎸🎼
It's impossible to describe what a phenomenon this song when it came out. Everyone loved this song. Even people who didn't like Tom Petty.

I saw him a few years ago in Cologne and it was a great Concert

Salvo put on ya party dress
@@thejoelrooganexplosion2400 I would LOVE to see that. lol

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Unmistakable. Unforgotten. Immortal. ✌
Yes after listening to the song, you must watch the video!
Gotta watch the video!!
WATCH the video. It will explain it.
I miss that he will never make another song for us
Record company asked for a single to add to the Greatest hits album. Petty said, how can it be o Greatest hits if it hasn't been written yet. Then he goes and writes this hit song. A legend
One of my fave Tom songs
Me too!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released this song on their greatest hits album. That's how confident and good they were.
🌸 one of my very favorite Petty songs.
Such a great and DEEEEP rabbit hole. R.I.P.
Definitely one of my favorite songs of there's. The video is epic, should check it out for sure.
Definitely need to watch the video 💯

I saw Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in concert at an outdoor venue in Kansas City about 2005. It was a perfect concert.
Can’t wait for you to see the video! It was big on MTV.
One of the best!!
RIP Tom 😭
My favorite Tom Petty song of all time. Fun to watch you react to it!

A LOT of his videos are odd, you know? I think the one for Don't Come Around Here No More is really strange and interesting.
And some years later, the Chili Peppers kinda ripped it off for their song 'Dani California', along with Hendrix' 'Foxy Lady' riff 😅

Wrong🤡
@@Kayjee17 I love how he interpreted his songs and didn't make cookie cutter videos.
A true American treasure!

Yes! I love how he interpreted his songs.
Three of my 5 favorite Petty songs.
I used to sit in front of the TV waiting for the music video for don’t come around here no more to come on MTV when I was young lol
He was in a movie with Kevin Costner called The Postman

5:34 I applaud your taste!!
This song, his voice, and that harmonica are freaking fabulous!
Unfortunately it became popular in 2017 in response to Petty’s death. Such a good song.
Always will love this!!❤
I love the Wildflowers album,so good.
Thank you, Krista! I've been wanting him to hear this for MONTHS. lol The video is a MUST.
Great song and ya it hits strong .
Hey Salvo! Haven’t seen ya for a while. Not a big Petty fan but I like this song and Free Fallin’. ✌️❤️🤘
I saw Tom in Evansville Indiana in late '95 or early '96. As you can imagine, this song was the hit everyone was singing to 👍
I was so mad I missed that one, but I had two pre-school kids at the time, and no baby sitter money back then. I missed the Black Crows concert too, and being an extra in a League of Their Own all for the same reason. 😆
Another person from E-ville 💪

I lived in Posey county for a while, in the early to mid 90s. My dad's from there 👍
@@danrumble74 It's weird seeing multiple people from E-ville on some random low view count video from a small content creator. Pretty cool
This will be fun!
Thanks for sharing!
I still feel sad whenever I remember Tom Petty isn't with us any longer.
good call on listening first and then adding the video -- it's iconic but weird so people get distracted.
Amazing song! Miss that dude, his music was so good.
That song 100% has a southern rock Lynyrd Skynyrd sound and vibe to it. Love it!
In my opinion he was always under rated.
Maybe cuz he wasn't super main-stream until later in his career? Always loved his early rock.
This and You don’t know how it feels! Great tunes😎
Any song that has "oh my my, oh hell yes" as a lyric is a guaranteed banger lol

Especially the ending.
You can clearly hear Bob Dylan influence in his voice. Very angsts, bluesy and hard rock. What an awesome song,,!
Just so good
I saw him at Red Rocks in Boulder Colorado
Red Rocks is in Morrison , not Boulder.
@@j.kevvideoproductions.6463 technicality, I lived in Loveland and everyone thought it was the ski area.
Nothing not to like about Tom Petty. Steady groove and his get down voice.
Another one of them songs, i had to turn off my Radio on the way home so i could keep this in my head, figured it out when i got home on the set list next day.,
I'd recommend "Swingin'" and "It's Good to be King". ❤ Both are great songs with great music videos.
I would like to suggest Louisiana Rain. It never got a lot of airplay, but it is one of his best songs.
My daughter when she was really young used to laugh iike crazy when he sings she's standing in her underwear. She thought it was hilarious! Believe he was talking about Marijuana. "Mary Jane"
The video, Kim Basinger, interesting subject matter.
Salvo--dive in with Tom Petty...he's got tons of great songs! Just start with the greatest hits and...yer off! :-) Enjoy, T
Super song 3:13
❤Genius ❤
❤❤
Correct! Listen first! The video is amazing but listne first!!!!!
JellyRoll and Snoop Gogg are covering this song
So glad you didn't watch the video first! Appreciate the song ❤and then watch the insane video 😂
Imo, he should have watched it. It puts a whole new spin on the song.
Petty was divorcing his first wife (Jane) when he wrote this too, which adds another layer
I’ve heard that too, however this song was recorded about 3 years before his divorce from Jane.
My favorite by Tom Petty ❤but I do hope you watch the video!
Very Dylanesque.
Good call on just the audio first. The video is fun but definitely a little overwhelming of the merits of the song.
Love this song. I personally think the music video is weird, or maybe just distracting
Saving Grace!
Not about weed…old song called Indiana Girl he dusted off….he was in the process of divorce from his then wife Jane
He didn't divorce his wife until 3 years later.
