This is one of those songs we called "Swamp Blues" in NC, because it was bluesy but you were too damn hot and sticky wherever you were playing to get a faster tempo... :P Petty was also really good at writing songs that could have multiple meanings, and many times even he didn't know what the meaning was. In the documentary 'Running Down a Dream', he talked about his song writing as being fairly passive. It would start with a tune or a lyric, and the other would come.
