Tom Petty was an American musical institution... his "Wildflowers" album was the masterpiece, but he wrote over 40 years worth of genius. I still can't believe he's gone.
Me either. Bought tickets for his last tour through my area. Mom got sick and I had to pass on the concert, Tom passed away about 6 months later. But, thankfully, mom was around for a couple more years...no regrets. BTW, I bought George Jones tickets and he died 4 days before the concert.

Certainly a laid back song. Also check out I Won't Back Down, Breakdown, You Got Lucky, The Waiting, Learning to Fly, Running Down a Dream, Here Comes My Girl and Don't Do Me Like That.
I saw Tom Petty many years ago. I thought I would be one of the youngest fans there, being about 30 at the time. Wow was I wrong. You had old time Willie Nelson hippies, 70's music rockers with long hair and pony tails, and a bunch of youngins' in their teens. And to my surprise, they all knew the songs. I've been to countless concerts (including 4 Ozzfests) and this was by far the most amazing feel of any. I enjoyed it so much I travelled several hours away to catch the next show. Not just once, but twice in that same summer!
Tom Petty said in at least one interview that he often liked to write lyrics that leave room for interpretation. It was a deliberate feature in this song. His videos also took an artistic approach and might tell a different story than the song (or no story at all). This song is a perfect example of that. "You Got Lucky" is another song that has a video that went in a completely different direction.
Hit my last number, walked to the road: Translation- Smoked his last joint & started thumbing. There really was nothing quite like one of his shows !Saw him 8 times.
Tom Petty effortlessly soared through all the musical epochs of American music without losing his own voice and making the world respect His style ; accepting it as a rare and unyielding edifice of Universal Genius!
Tom Petty was just a genius as a lyricist and musician. He was a True American Poet (and ironically, this song was his tribute to another one....Bob Dylan). He's sorely missed by so many and touched so many lives in so many ways.
Tom is so much more than his greatest hits, and I'm one of those guys. I'm glad you guys are giving Tom some love because he deserves it, but ya gotta go passed his greatest hits.
Mike Campbell and Tom were both playing with a pick (plectorum). Both are using electric guitars, (although an acoustic track is buried in there somewhere too,) I think what term you are searching for are APPREGGIOS. Instead of strumming straight through a chord, part or all of the chord can be picked by the individual strings one a time. With a pick you can strike with different attacks sounding louder, softer, more or less aggressive. Some guitarists prefer to just play with their fingers, instead of using a pick (Mark Knopfler- Dire Straights) but it is a personal taste thing. A pick is louder, but you can change the amp settings if you just use fingers to compensate for skin instead of plastic.
Tom Petty is amazing. Parts of this song has always sounded like Bob Dylan. And Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison vreated a super group they named The Traveling Wilburys. You really should check it out.
bluesy rock vibe, with the stacked vocal harmonies on the chorus soundin' so good. TP&TH have great songs..."Here Comes My Girl"..."Breakdown"..."Refugee"..."Free Fallin'"..."Runnin' Down a Dream"...lots more...
Mike Campbell is the other guitarist that's in the Heartbreakers. Saw them perform live once, and watching him play was super impressive. Also, and I didn't expect it, was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
Hey guys, love that you're getting into some Tom Petty, this one is another pretty easy song to play on guitar. At least the main rhythm guitar, it's always a great song to throw in the learning list. 🤘🙏😁

That's a great reaction, thoughtful and funny. Here's Lex painting this wonderful image of a backcountry road, for me it would be in the late evening, twilight, just hanging out. And Brad is like, no way man I'd be paranoid. Lmao. There are actually three guitars in this, left and right channel throughout the tune and they both have different textures and are doing slightly different things and then they come together at times. And then that solo that goes on through the outro is in the center channel. All three sound like picks to me, but I would say the right channel guitar does have a pretty soft attack approach. If it's not fingers, perhaps he's using a really thin pick, and at any rate it sounds like there's some pretty good drive behind it although the master volume isn't really loud. That always gives a nice warm resonance and sustain. This can be done by overdriving the master channel by turning the input channel volume up and the master volume down, or with an overdrive pedal or a combination of both. Also sounds like he's probably adding just a touch of compression and sustain with a foot pedal, which can allow for a very soft attack but still good body and resonance. Also he may have the tone control on the guitar dialed back from the treble end some which also helps.
Oh yeah, and then there's pickup selection on the guitar. He's probably using the neck pickup rather than the bridge pickup and that alone will help in that direction and then if it's a humbucker pickup(s), it's going to be even more in that direction.
I agree - picks are used her, not the fingers - but only guitar players or musicians would know this. Brad and Lex have good ears and observations - the guitar playing is muted/dampened in the rhythm playing - more subdued- which Lex noticed but didn’t have words for it.

The musical genius from Gainesville! Tried and true recipe for success, simplicity but but flawless in its delivery. Tom Petty's catalog is so vast and his longevity was proven out to be genuine talent. I would offer some of his best songs were still coming out like "I should have known it" or "Saving Grace" - two fantastic songs. The official videos are both just his band in his studio jamming - you can tell how much they enjoyed playing together as the Heart Breakers!
Petty never said what this song is about, but there are two common interpretations. It could be about Petty's divorce from his wife Jane, which happened a year before this was recorded. Another possibility is that it is about marijuana, as "Mary Jane" is slang for pot and the lyrics refer to killing the pain, which the drug is known for. Mike Campbell offered this explanation: "My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it's a drug reference, and if that's what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song."
TP the songs of a generation. We miss him soooo much but thankful he left us so many gems. This one is a break up song .... girl and last dance with weeds.....
He talked about it in some interviews over the years. It was actually a discard from a previous album he had rejected and dropped before finishing. When he was told that contractually he had to provide a new song for the greatest hits album, he wasn't happy (he didn't think greatest hits compilations should have new music because fans are buying them for the old music they know and love), so rather than take the time to start a new song from scratch, he picked this one up and finished and recorded in almost record time.
I recommend a song by The Pixies called “All I think about Now” it’s sung by the guitarist , her name is Paz Lenchantin, she’s super great , she replaced the original guitarist from the pixies

Tom Petty will forever remind me of summer concerts outside smoking up. Tom would take breaks to get his buzz back. Such a great time singing with the whole crowd.
Considering the "Indiana girls on an Indiana night" line, I always wondered if his "market square" line was inspired by the old Market Square Arena/Market St. in downtown Indianapolis. The concert venue staple for national bands around here in the 70's and 80's.
A US radio station said that Red Hot Chili Peppers plagiarized Last Dance with Mary Jane on their song Dani California and asked Tom Petty to sue. He said No because a lot of songs sound alike. Both songs were produced by Rick Rubin. Then again the Main riff of Petty's song resembles Waiting For The Sun by The Jayhawks from 1995. Keyboardist Benmont Trench from The Jayhawks played on both songs and were a touring member for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers
So I keep talking about how much I like TP... well this is a great example. This song was released as the only "new" song on a greatest hits album... and this ends up being one of his biggest hits ever. Amazing talent! then Wildflower comes out and this vibe carried over. Bravo 👏

Great reaction to another Top Petty hit! The Waiting and Even The Losers are two more Petty classics……there are many others!
This song is 🔥🔥🔥
Sweet drumming - Stan Lynch has great feel here!
Tom Petty has such an original sound. Love it...
A tune from a legend.
i love this VIDEO , music and BAND !!!!!
I bought “Damn The Torpedos” in 1979 (high school) and have been a fan since!
So I keep talking about how much I like TP... well this is a great example. This song was released as the only "new" song on a greatest hits album... and this ends up being one of his biggest hits ever. Amazing talent! then Wildflower comes out and this vibe carried over. Bravo 👏
What a sweet sounding track!
