This was 7 years before autotune was invented. Written by Prince, but her performance of it is sooo beautiful!
pitch correction is the technique and it has been around since the early 70s, auto tune is just the name of a commonly used program, this song is using pitch correction, reverb, delay, compression etc
And better
@@WookieWarriorz It's not auto-tune or pitch correction. It's called double tracking. She records a voice track and then she sings over that voice track. So you're essentially hearing both of her voice tracks played simultaneously. This has been used since the 60s.
@@WookieWarriorz no it isn’t, I can do this with my cheap mixer, its just her voice over her voice, but it’s all her voice, stop trying to justify this great song with today’s BS
that was just simple multitrack harmonization but on the same note slightly out of tune and tempo called double tracking, as someone already said. Maybe there is some distortion or hard compression on one track to make the voice more scratchy and linear in the harsh part, and a reverb to glue the whole thing. That's what they would do today, at that time the audio could have been compressed and distorted just by using analogic tapes in the recording and mixing process.
there is no autotune. she's just that good. she and her mom had a "difficult" relationship, mostly alleged abuse and stuff with the church. and her mother died in real life before she did this song, very emotional for her.
Then history kinda repeats itself, as her son took his own life not so long ago.
@@AD270479 Specifically medical history. Clearly there are mental issues going on with her.
Prince wrote it about his housekeeper
I don’t even think autotune was invented when this came out. There may be some doubling though.
@@johnobrien1528 must of been a fantastic housekeeper
Incredible voice...all natural...no autotune.....
Yet . . . it is double tracked.
@@JayG666 Which every musician ever has done. From the Beatles to Nirvana. Double tracking is NOT the same as autotune - and will not hide a bad performance.
@@zoeherriot It could. It's a studio tool. Just like the others. Stop Boomering about auto tune.
No autotune.
Only outoftune.
😆
“I’ve been so lonely without you here. Like a bird without a song”. That lyric is the best in the song
I heard it as I read your comment
No auto-tune when this song came out.
@@Tommysimonsen auto tune official release date was Sept of 97'-cher song was 98. Nothing compares to you was early 90's
@@Tommysimonsen nope, her song "Believe" (first to use auto-tune) was released in 1998!
Digital auto tune didn’t exist but sometimes they could manipulate a track by slowing or speeding up the tape. But I don’t think they used it often. This particular song has a doubled up vocal track which gives it a beautiful and ghostly effect.
@@ChadTheAlcoholic go listen to live version of this song... Its Sineads voice that make it, not any edits or doubles or anything else
@@peterwhite2681 I of course know what you’re saying but there is without a doubt a doubled up vocal track on parts of the song. It adds to the big picture
No autotune on her stuff. She just has that "yodel" technique down and can flip her voice and also belt with great power
They did not say autotune, they are talking about the parts where the voice sounds like the lines are being sung twice, like it has been duplicated and offset.
@@barryevans791 They did on 2:53.
its an irish capability
@@davexvs Really? Doubling the vocal line on a recording is an Irish capabilty huh? LMAO...Seriously, it's ok to like a song, but don't attribute superpowers to a blatantly obvious recording trick.
@@TritoneChris reverb or echo effect I would have thought was pretty obvious
No auto tune. She’s Irish and they sing with the kind of “yodel” thing. I know that’s the wrong word 😂! It’s a love song. Me and my friends went to a 24 hour diner after one of them was going through a break up. She played this song on the juke box on repeat for hours and cried and drank coffee. One of my fondest memories. We laughed about it for years, since they ended up back together. Over 30 years later they are still together.
keening

Blah, I already rambled a novel as to why this autotune thing is simply a false notion poeple use to feel more superior with their musical tastes in another comment. But can you name a single actual singer these days who needs or relies on autotune? Not any popstars and not the new generations hip hop. Singers. Just name one. It's just not true. I am just so curious what singers are using autotune to where everyone thinks all current artists use it. lol I think every generation has beautiful singers and talented artists. The only thing that has really changed is the radio, and what they choose to put on there. Especially with how popular streaming is now. But musically, there are plenty of gorgeous natural voices with no autotune.
I was going to say her Irish accent is strong. But her voice is so powerful. She is stunningly beautiful too. Which she cut all her hair off to avoid appearing to be. Lol
Highest selling single in the world in 1990. It’s one of those few songs where you stop what you are doing and listen to it, and wonder if you’d ever had a love that would leave you feeling like that when it ended (or if you’d left somebody and they’d felt like that).
👍👍👍
Prince wrote this, but it's Sinead's song now. That's what happens when you do a great cover of a song. :)
This song is from 1989, about a decade before autotune.
Yeah I actually find it really annoying when they attribute someone’s vocal ability to auto tune. Especially as in this case when the song preceded auto tune by like…a long long time!
Chris Cornell did an acoustic one-take that is just haunting.
Hey..I wanted to tell this:)..about Prince
It's not auto tune but it is layered. It's just her voice over her own voice on a backing track. Doesn't matter though. The live version is just as beautiful.
@@Tijuanabill I was gonna say, Rosie Gaines killed her part. That's my favorite version because of her.
no autotune, brad - that's just straight-up old-fashioned reverb on the high end
I think they used a noise-gate, too, and just a touch of chorus (that part Brad thought was "doubled")
@@mostlyevilmisha It is doubled.
I love how Sinead can sing with such true emotion. Such a beautiful song. At the end of the song she breaks out in tears, she really loved mom.
No auto tune for my girl Sinead. Pure talent. So many wonderful tracks in every possible style but I prefer her own harder stuff.
They are doubling maybe more at times and using delay but not auto tune or anything modern. It can be done live too.
Wrong, she used technology to enhance her voice, she sounds like shit with her natural voice.
I am curious, because I ALWAYS see people commenting "no auto tune" as if beautiful singers these days use it. lol We can all talk about how amazingly talented someone is without feeling the need to down other music. It's just so childish, and not even correct. Please name me any current popular singer who uses autotune. I will take just one. I can rattle off so many modern singers from so many genres who don't.
The ONLY time you see autotune is on radio pop songs and some current young hip hop/R&B. That genre just happens to be whats popular right now for the radio, but there are a multitude of fantastic singers/artists. There are beautiful and extremely talented voices in every time period. I just appreciate greatness and beauty is all forms, and comments like this shows me you've boxed yourself into a false definition of what is talent. Which means you're missinout out on a lot of wonderful music.
And i know this is blasphemous but autotune isn't always bad either. It can make already perfectly beautiful vocals have a different feeling. It's different than artists who purely depend on them and use them on all their songs. But autotune used correctly is merely another instrument. I would also like to think experimental bands from the 60's-80's, like the Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc would have also experimented with autotune, as they did with all other sounds and whatever new technology was out at the time. Hell, even Peter Frampton has one of the greatest albums ever from that time period and is know for the instrument he uses that sounds very similar to autotune. So it isn't that someone uses it, its how they use it. And again, this notion that singers these days depend on it is complete nonsense. lol Just a lazy attempt at musical elitism. lol
Ramble over.
You may be thinking of "overdub" rather than "auto tune". That's when they record the vocals more than once and layer them on top of each other. It makes the vocals sound "thicker" or more powerful.
Yeah, they're nowhere near the same thing.
I listened to the intro again, but it's a little difficult without headphones...
I believe if you listen to the first verse that is just the reverb others mentioned (the sound of singing in a big open room where the sound almost echos a bit). But when the drums kick in, that's when it sounds like they overdub and have two different vocal tracks layered. Probably needed it to give her vocals more power with the drums and instrumentation that came in.
You're probably right but when Lex said that I thought maybe she was talking about the grace notes that Sinead sings, which are a big thing in Irish traditional music.
Ray Charles started that right?
@@carlamarlene2927 I am not sure, but if you have any stories that talk about it, I would love to read about it!
Sending Sinead some good vibes, She's gone through a lot in her life, and now dealing with mental health issues after her youngest son committed suicide recently. This song is amazing, but it doesn't showcase her unique voice as much as her originals.
I did not know that - I just read a long account of her son's death and it was heartbreaking. Make me feel lucky by comparison.
@@stephenbrough8132 I had just read a few days ago that she is hospitalized after posting a very long (and unnecessary) apology to her son's father and her fans over her inability to cope. My youngest of four is also going through some things, and I can't imagine losing him. It's heartbreaking.
@@laurettelaliberte8864 I'm sorry to hear your youngest is having a hard time and you too as a consequence. It often seems that the youngest lose their way to one extent or another - I can think of many examples in my own small world and I wonder whether there are proper studies into this or whether I am just reading more into it than there is. A friend with one 3 year old who I adore, said she had heard that the first child tends to be more independent and again, I can see this possibly being true from my small view of the world. Anyway, I'm waffling - but I do wish you the very best in your efforts to help your children achieve happiness and contentment - and yourself of course. Parents deserve medals.
She didn’t write the song or the lyrics it was Prince
@@georgehermans2187 Which is why I mentioned how her voice is more impactful on her originals.
Love that people are still discovering her music and enjoying it :) RIP Sinead!
You're hearing an "overdub", also called a "double track." The artist sings the song, then sings over his or herself to gain a fuller sound (or just to add more emphasis on certain parts). Sounds like there was also some reverb in the mix. This technique is used in almost every song, in one form or another.
Prince wrote it, Sinead delivered it. She's an extraordinary singer. Her later work on Irish traditional numbers with the Chieftains and Van Morrison were somewhere on a higher plane.
When my husband has been in the bathroom forever I like to stand outside the door and sing 🎶It's been 7 hours and 15 days🎶 and then he yells at me to go tf away. So that's some info you all know now.

No autotune. She sang it twice on two separate tracks. What's amazing was how she was able to sing it almost exactly the same on both tracks, but different enough that you could hear both.
Her mom was actually VERY abusive to her but she has Stockholm Syndrome and still missed and loved her mom even after her mom passed. Her story is very sad!
She wanted her lovebut got zero just mean
Brad u guys neveruse the videos the songs with the videos are great.great great.even alanis morissette ironic.
Very sad
No autotune at all. Some people with perfect pitch really can sing that well naturally. Great song, really terrific, written by Prince.
Snead autotuned voice? No! She has one of the best voices in pop rock, alternative and folk rock. Very natural voice. She had many popular songs/videos throughout her career ('80, '90s, and '00s). I think this song was about her mother or a lover. I don't remember. Brad is close.
Also autotune was rarely used back then, I think Cher back in the late '90s was the first mainstream artist to have a mainstream hit using autotune. "Believe" was a pop dance hit. But, autotune wasn't used often until around the later 2000s, mostly by rappers and R&B singers. Lil Wayne, T-Pain, Black Eyed Peas, etc. Many pop artists. Also a few rock bands.
I doubt Prince wrote a song about her mother. It is about an abandoned lover though.
Not rarely used, it simply didn't exist.
This is from 1990 and auto-tune hit the market in '96.
She didn't write this song. Do some research.
I heard a story that it was prince writing about his PA going away for a few days and he used that feeling of loss to apply to the end of a love relationship.
The effect is a double track of her voice and two different recordings, known as 'double lead' or 'scratch lead' very common and still used to this day to give a fuller sound and more raw impression
Lexs so switched on with the meaning of songs. She understands the nuances in voices she listening to I love her reactions
totally agree--she has great intuition/feelings
Some of what you hear in her voice is Irish keening. You will hear it with Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, and even sometimes in Bono's (of U2) singing, both are Irish. Back in the day, most of us thought this was a breakup song - but great music means different things to different people, it doesn't have to mean the same thing to the listener as it did to the singer.
Spot on Steph.
Composed by Prince. He chooses Sinead on purpose. No one else could sing that song unless Prince accepts it. It is from him a guarantee of the highest quality. Her tears were Real tears during the video. Wonderful.
Chris Cornell did a pretty damn good job covering this
Prince wrote this song, he did not pick Sinead to sing this song. The record company decided to let Sinead do this cover without Prince's permission. The best versions of this song were by The Family and by Prince himself.
@@anthonyhelton257
Prince’s version is so good.
Actually he had another band of his record it first. He built bands in his spare (?) time.
@@neshobanakni Yes, the name of the band was The Family.
This video was made at the height of the over-the-top,special effects-laden extravagant video days of MTV. But just a simple close-up of the singer's face and a few establishing shots, was so incredibly captivating.
And yeah, that's her voice. Listn to the a capella song "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". My favorite from the album is "This Is The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance".
D’Angelo “Untitled” was the same type of video.
Mine too
This was recorded nearly a decade before autotune was even invented.
Nothing before 1997 was ever autotuned. This song was 1990.
It's just two tracks of her lead voice playing at the same time, giving it a thickness and an occasional detuned flanging sound.
no autotune back then, and yes real tears, she has amazing eyes that hold your attention right through the video, very clever.
I can attest to the purity, the power and passion in her voice having seen her in concert several times. She’s authentic and does not need any auto tune help.
one of my favourite sings of all time. amazing vocals. passion. those eyes.
I saw her in concert in the early 90's, she is such a beautiful person with an amazing voice.
was fortunate to see her in 2008 and she was still as amazing and mesmerizing
@@GeePeeSterRace and then she went completely insane.
When you held out your arm to pause. I was like “no way he is pausing at this timing”

Lex picked up the ball on this one. It’s def. a heartbreak and worth another listen
When Lex said "Her voice is round but sharp at the same time" was really profound and I really like that description... I love that the both of you are coming into your own when giving your own personal interpretation of each song, it makes me happy because y'all haven't heard any of these beautiful classics before and the analysis afterwards or during are cool because for someone like me who grew up listening and still listening to these songs your analysis can sometimes make me think "Oh wow I've never thought of it that way before" and that makes me smile... Love the channel you 2, keep up the very cool content... Big fan from New Zealand
Coming out of London England, as soon as she locks her eyes on you, your transfixed and mesmerised, smashing through the screen and grabbing your heart, a voice of platinum pearls and golden glass, RIP SWEETHEART.
It was written by Prince and it’s about a loss of a partner. The mention of a mother was about when the lost partner planted plants for the mother.
Actually Prince wrote it about his housekeeper who left his employ because her father had died suddenly.
I was in High School when this song came out and it was HUGE. I hated it. But, now, with decades and decades of life experience behind me, I can appreciate just how fully O'Connor gives voice to how a broken heart feels. Iconic performance, and some great songwriting (as usual) by Prince.
The song is written by Prince and it is about a breakup but when she was recording the video her mom had recently died. She wasn't exactly sad about it. Her mother hated her and treated her like garbage, still the line "all the flowers that you planted mama, in the backyard, all died when you went away" made all these painful memories flood over her. That's the point where she starts crying.
Brad, you made me literally laugh out loud with your "so what is this song about?" - I mean *MAAAAN* seriously?? Love you guys, seriously, favourite reaction channel, you complement each other perfectly.
The entire album that this is on, "I do not want what I haven't bought" is AWESOME. She had amazing talent, she just kinda went off the deep end mentally because of personal issues. That alienated a lot of people, especially when she tore up a picture of the Pope on live TV, and nobody understood her context at the time.
I doubt there were many people in SNL's viewing audience that /didn't/ understand "her context at the time". Ireland was in the news constantly.
This song always gives me a lump in my throat. Such a beautiful voice.
rest in peace Sinead 😢😢😢nothing will compare to you ..Dublin, December 8, 1966 - London, July 26, 2023
Sinead is such a talent. I pray that she is able to make it through her mental health struggles and the recent loss of her son. She’s endured so much in her lifetime.
I've always been a big fan of Sinead O'Connor - Troy (from the Lion and the Cobra) is a great example of the emotion she is able to convey with her voice.
Love that track, epic.
Troy is great.
@@s.oliver3687 There are so many of us asking fr "Troy" here.
My favorite off The Lion and the Cobra
Oh yes, Troy! My late husband was a crumpled every time he heard it!!❤❤❤
I absolutely love her cover of this Prince song. It became a smash hit and I went out and bought the CD and it turns out there are many great songs on it. It's really a solid album. In fact one of the songs, that is so beautiful, I think it's called, I will have you with me or maybe that's just the hook in the chorus. But I've performed it with some others at a friend's wedding. It is acapella in four verses and four voices, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and it starts with one voice and then with each successive verse adds another so it's all four singing acapella for the final climax of the song. No auto-tune at all, she really is a great singer but she did double track her voice on this, which is a perfect choice for this content, I believe. Basically, she sings it once and then they go back and she sings over herself singing basically the same thing, but due to very slight differences, it gives it that extra body and makes it sound really textured and penetrating.
RIP Prince
OMG really look at her talent!!!!! She was was way before her time!!!!!!!!!!
She really was
She harmonizes her own voice, she sounds like two people are singing.
This was a smash hit, MTV music video of the year.
I turned 52 yesterday. This song still makes me cry. It's absolutely beautiful. You feel every ounce of loss she's going through.
This was all Sinead. No funny business with computers or anything like that. This is how she does the song every time.
Fun fact, the song was written by Prince and released on the only album his side project "The Family" released.
I am 41 now. My parents got divorced when I was four years old. I remember my mom used to hear this song after the divorce over the years, one of her fav songs. I was still a child. She was depressive, played this on vinyl over and over, candles burning, no light, she crying. I lost her when I was 18, she 38. Murdered by her boyfriend. When I was 36 married my great love. She also loved this song, gifted a vinyl to me. Lost my Woman to my former best friend, they both have a child now - one year ago. Now I am sitting here, in the dark, alone. Think of my mom and my former wife. Still love them both. Thanks for choosing this song!

Wow, man. Please always remember that the world is full of beauty in spite of its tragedies.
Keep on keeping on.
I love that so many young people love a 40 yr old song. She sang this song because her mum died and it made her think of her and her feeling towards her mum after she died.It never ages.. But now she must think of her son who killed himself, my heart breaks for her. I loved .the song in my 20 and still love the same song, It would be my favourite solo song it never ages.
Sinead was the Adele of my generation! No auto tune but a few overdubs in post production. Saw her live in 88 or 89 and she sang a song a cappella and everyone’s jaw was on the floor.
It's called voice doubling. Happens on most classic rock songs, but she changed it up by occasionally doing something different with the other voice. Prince wrote the song, and just a reminder - song lyrics aren't all real life.
The "Foggy Dew" is a traditional Irish song she did with The Chieftains. Her voice in it sounds like a crystal clear powerful silver bell. No autotuning, there is a video of them in the studio. Link:

Hi Brad & Lex❤️ i think it's a lost of her mother she sings about ❤️🇸🇪👍. THX again B&L for a wonderful reaction 👍🇸🇪👍
At one time she was on her way to becoming a mega superstar, then she sings on SNL and at the end of her song she tears up a picture of the Pope- she tanked after that. Beautiful voice
Can't say I blame her there.
Well, she didn’t think she was basically banned from being able to perform because God forbid you say something bad about a clergyman, and everyone knows I’m a victim myself that the people that claim to be the closest to God are the worst perpetrators of violence and abuse against women and children
Seen her a couple of times. Her voice is crazy good. Although this is a Prince song she covered many call her a one hit wonder, i personally think her own stuff is miles better. Her song Troy is really good...actually any song from her the lion and cobra album. She's had a bad press though and has had a very public struggle with stuff.
Any song from that album ("Nothing Compares 2 U") is good, too. What a great singer/songwriter.
Totally agree. I love the song "Mandinka" off Lion and the Cobra. She was already pretty popular in the album-oriented-rock world before "Nothing Compares 2 U" was released.

Nothing Compares 2 U is a song written and composed by Prince for his side project, The Family; the song featured on their eponymous 1985 debut album. The song's lyrics explore feelings of longing from the point of view of an abandoned lover.
She added the word "Momma" to the lyrics because she had lost her mom. But the words (except momma) were written years before by Prince. It has nothing to do with the loss of a parent. It is all about liss of self. When you think you've found ",the One," you start to open up. In those late night soft conversations after the lovemaking is through, you do more than cuddle and whisper words of love. You begin to let another inside your psyche -to see who you really are. Your very darkest fears you share. Your longest-held dreams you share. Your emotions felt of joy, anger, sadness, all are revealed. You end up giving to another a part of who you are that no one else knows.
Then your lover leaves. With your liver goes that part of you once shared and you feel you will never be while again. That emotional rollercoaster is captured in her eyes and the quiver in her voice. This was not just a song, this was art.
No effects on her voice at all. Hearing her live was life altering, the raw power and emotion in her vocals is just incredible. You should give "Troy" a listen.
This song is really just a straight up break up song. Nothing complicated about the song, really.
This version of the song came out 7 years before autotune was invented btw :p
The song is genuinly beautiful, one of the very few songs i would ever classify with that word.
Prince wrote and recorded this song in 1984, It was Sinéad O'Connor's manager, Fachtna O'Kelly, who came up with the idea for the Irish singer to cover the Prince song.
When Sinéad cried In the video, it was a real tear. In the Rolling Stone Top 500 songs issue, she said, "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'" In her memoir Rememberings, O'Connor explained that the lyric that triggered the tear was:
All the flowers that you planted mama
In the back yard
All died when you went away
Her mother, who was abusive toward her, died in a car accident in 1985 when Sinéad was 18. That day, she removed the photo of Pope John Paul II from her mother's bedroom wall; this was the same photo she famously tore up on Saturday Night Live. Peace out.
I see other comments that say the same thing. This is music from when I was a kid and we did not have Auto-Tune. She is just a very good singer.
Great reaction
Anther one they played the hell out of on MTV. For you youngsters, yes MTV use to play music videos, lol.
Still brings tears to my eyes. He voice......whew
Listen to her whole album, "The Lion and the Cobra". So many powerful songs. Between her ethereal voice and the subject matter...you'll need therapy afterwards.
This was a #1 hit in 17 countries. In the US, it was one of the top songs of 1990, topping the Hot 100 for four weeks.
Lex you're so empathetic, and it shows. Beautiful.
No autotune. Sometimes, they'll double the main track into a background voice track to create an echo or use an echo effect. This works in studio but live its historically much harder to pull off 1) since the singers aren't there and 2) recorded tape tracks during that time were not necessarily digital or rudimentary digital and super high quality recording was only really in the studio.
A great song, written by a great artist. This is the cover I've always known and it helped propel her into the mainstream. HOWEVER.... Chris Cornell's rendition of this song truly gives these lyrics their full meaning. In my slightly ignorant opinion, this song now and forevermore will belong to Chris....you guys should check it out.
Sinead was/is a phenomenal talent...Her career definitely had ups and downs. The best qoute I read from her was that, paraphrasing, she never wanted to be a rock star, she wanted to be a protest singer... I think the Lion and the Cobra is a fantastic album. Troy is an amazing song and Jackie is an under appreciated gem
This lady reacting is sharp smart, thank you guys for honoring Sinead
Hey y’all- oh you must see Sinead do this live- her voice is phenomenal- she’s onstage, barefoot, dancing a little-and it’s beautiful! AND LEX, if you haven’t (I should have checked) anyway, you must see Chris Cornell’s cover of this..AND there’s more- A more R&B style done by a group called The Family- absolutely gorgeous with R&B and orchestra notes- Every cover is very different- Sinead happened to make the song famous-Soooo many people have done these versions.. The Family version always gets over looked and shouldn’t- they were one of the first to do it- (Written by Prince.) y’all will LOVE Chris Cornell’s cover FOR SURE! It’s a must SEE and hear-Him, his guitar AND VOICE- on another note, imagine Chris Cornell singing MJ’s “Billiejean!” (Yes, THAT “Billiejean!” ) Well don’t imagine I, cause he did cover it-😃 Slowed down, acoustic and voice! Blow you away, I tell ya.’ And Brad, plenty of distance in all of them.. 😆
The Family was the original recording; they were a group that Prince was trying to promote, and so he wrote the song for them.
Of course, Prince's own performances of the song are pretty damn good, too. But when is Prince not?
I'm partial to the Chris Cornell version myself.
Yes and he did a great cover of THANK YOU by LED ZEPPELIN ON THE HOWARD STERN SHOW 🎸👍
Chris Cornell did a better version of the song
Her mother died in a car crash when Sinead was 18. And altghough her mum abused her severely as a child she said she always thinks about her mum when singing this. I was 21 when this was released and it meant the world to us. Amazing to see, she touched and touches people, no matter what age , backround or religion all over the world. She left us with this treasure but way too soon. The suicide of her son was, after all she had been through (abuse by the people who worked at the catholic instiutions where she was placed ) was just to much to bare.
Nah brother, no auto-tune here. Pure talent
She probably has the best vocals Ive seen on this channel. And yes I love Alanis as well.
React too Troy
Hey, I recommended that too. It's stunning, isn't it?
Troy++
yes, Troy is a masterpiece
absolutely troy is fantastic
@@pauldover1403 yes sir, live may even be better with Troy. It's close to me
There is no auto tune, she’s just an amazing singer
Legendary recording. That is the definition of recording art.
Acquaintance of mine was in a residential home in Dublin a while ago and she was with a woman who was wearing a head covering everyday in the common room. After a week or so a song came on the radio and she said to this woman " oh my god that singer has the most amazing voice I ever heard" this woman then left the room and someone came over to her and said " you know that's Sinead O'Connor the woman in the song you've been talking to all week"
She said she apologised to her for not recognising but I think she was happy she wasn't recognised to be honest
No autotune... just her voice.
Heh. I love that Brad & Lex interpret any sort of audio FX as "autotune." Guys, autotune was a late 2000s thing. (Cher used it in 1998, but it didn't really catch on until much later.)
Also Brad, my guy, how did you manage to miss that this was a break-up song, but pick up on the single line in the song that mentions "mother"? Did you literally miss the entire rest of the lyrics?
He misses a lot on these reactions
This is why their constant over analyzing of songs drives me a bit mad. Instead of just chilling to the tunes & feeding their souls w things they've never been exposed to before, they always get into these unnecessary over analytical tangents......
At this point they're not "reacting" anymore, they've turned into music critics..
Cher used it as an effect, not to cover up the lack of talent as many do. Cher clearly had an awesome powerful voice.
This sudden mention of a mother always confused me about this song. It was so clearly a break-up song but then why throw in "mother" in that way? I still think it is a break-up song and she is just talking to her mother about the break-up, but lyrics are open to interpretation and reading it as a song about a mother that died is fine with me, too :)

Prince wrote it and "Mama" is just used to reference a female.
Sinead didn't gender swap it along with the other lyrics because she could use it literally to reference her deceased mother as tribute.
That song was written by Prince. Sinead O'Conner had a lot of great material. She had a rough go of it after her speaking out against the Catholic church on SNL. But it ends up she was right about the things she was saying. On 3 October 1992, O'Connor appeared on Saturday Night Live as a musical guest. She sang, which she intended as a protest against the sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church, referring to child abuse rather than racism. Her life eventually spiraled out of control a few times since then. She suffers from a bipolar condition. One of my favorite tunes by her was called "The thief of your heart" which was used in a film called In the name of the Father.
I had this same reaction when I learned of Whitney Houston's passing. I'm a 55 year old army veteran and have found myself breaking down in tears 4-5 times in the last several days since i first heard of her passing. As when Whitney Houston left us, i think we are all now the lesser for it, RIP Sinead.
Try one of the live versions. They show her incredible vocals and stage presence. Also, her song “Troy” is great and would be curious for your reaction. She also does Pink Floyd’s “Mother” live with Roger Waters and I know you had a strong emotional response to that song by PF.
Gotta give “Troy” a listen. If possible listen to the live version from the Pinkpop festival. Pure POWER. Her voice is unbelievable
Yes on Troy. It’s an absolutely amazing vocal performance. But PLEASE do the studio version before you start messing with live.
@@djm0111 I agree. Her live performance of Troy from Pinkpop is phenomenal but you really need to be familiar with the studio version to understand the passion of the live version
"Nothing compares" to real feelings and emotion in music. Still and for a long time a classic and timeless.
We can all tell that Lex liked this one !
I'm in total agreement. I remember when this came out 30 years ago.
Huge hit!!!!
