I love this -- at the beginning, Tom says, "Me and Del were singing . . . little runaway." He's referring to Del Shannon's song, "Runaway," playing on the car radio. A classic 1961 song.
Also, Mike wrote a bunch of the songs - the music was there, Petty added lyrics. It was quite a team. Mike Campbell wrote "boys of summer" in fact....Petty didn't want it, so Campbell gave it Don Henley, who wrote lyrics to Campbell's music and the rest is history.
Did you notice in the video that Tom tripped over a Grammy award? Ironically, he was nominated for three from this album. But he won the same year as a member of the Traveling Wilburys.
Tom Petty met Elvis when he was 11 years old and was inspired to become a singer. This song represents chasing that dream. This was from the "Full Moon Fever" album from 1989. Jeff Lynne co produced this album and played several instruments on it. Great tune with definite sounds of Jeff's influence. Great reaction.Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️ ❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Best concert I ever saw-and the diversity of the audience all jamming together is something I will never forget. It was either ‘80 or ‘81, can’t remember the time exactly, just the vibe.
My dad went to the university of Florida in the late 60s he said he had a friend call him up n said come down to this frat house, there's a band playing that you got to hear, we went, n said they blew him away, it was tom petty, ill never forget that story
If you're wondering about the visuals of the video they are based on a very old comic strip called "Little Nemo in Slumberland" which was about a little boy who had weird and bizzare dreams about strange lands. They just inserted an animated Tom Petty into it.
This is from his solo album Full Moon Fever. An excellent record, more Rock and Roll than his Heartbreakers stuff. RIP Tom Petty You're sorely missed,.
I got hooked on Tom Petty in his early days when I heard the song "I Need To Know" 2:24 of rocking goodness. You should check that one out. Great job guys.
Thanks for getting to my favorite Tom Petty song. The best Mike Campbell solo of all time. Mike is a very underrated guitar player. All of the musicians in the band are exceptional players. This song rocks!
I feel incredibly lucky to have experienced Tom Petty live during one of his (stated) favorite shows in Indiana when the craziest tornado storm hit during the show. Scary and knocked out the power for about an hour, rained like heck then restarted the show in MUD! Mind you, most of that venue was not covered and turned into a mud pile in the rain. It was wild and fun. That was the early 2000s and one of my favorite memories ever. More Petty please!
Tom Petty is rarely in the conversation of "The Greats," but 50 years from now kids will still be covering these songs in their garage bands and feeling how cool these songs are. It's hard to find a bad TP song. Try "Don't Do Me Like That," or "Refugee" next.
From around 1978 to 2000, Tom Petty was America's most brilliant and prolific singer-songwriter... truly a legend. I still can't believe he is no longer with us.
What a great driving song, the speed limit is optional with this one blasting out my car speakers. Saw them do this just a few rows from the stage, Mike Campbell was on fire that night, he also did an instrumental segment with a surf guitar tribute to Dick Dale that was amazing. Try Mary Jane's Last Dance, it is a studio classic but this is another of his songs that takes on a life of its own live. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
OMG I know in the past I kept requesting it now it's cool that they finally get to listen to it and that's what I would always say I go on road trips and I play that song it's a good road trip song
“She’s a Woman in love” is one of my favorites …. I saw him in concert in the 90’s and had a chance to see him perform what would unknowingly be his last performance at the Hollywood Bowl a few years back….. RIP Mr Petty… you are truly missed 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸…
Yeah, Amber. Exactly right; the guitar riff in this is fantastic but then when it hits the chorus, you've got that heavy thick acoustic guitar strumming which they put up in the mix to compete with the electric guitar and it just adds that incredible rhythm to it. Great observation.
I saw Tom Petty six times, always a great concert, and this song was so so so good live! Brings back some great memories! RIP dude, hope you are in a great dream!
The lyric "Me and Del were singing little run away" is a reference to Del Shannon which was a singer in the 50's and of course he sang "Little run away" which would be a great video to react to for y'all.
@@bartstarr100 The last album release by Mr. Shannon was "Home and Away" which was produced by Andrew Oldham 2006. Petty produced "Drop down and Get Me" 1981. The album after that one was produced by Jeff Lynne and Mike Cambell title "Rock On" 1991
II forgot to tell you guys that The Heartbreakers was the opening act for The Who when I saw them in concert last year in October and the last song they played was this song "Running Down A Dream" and they played it for like 10 minutes and everybody was on their feet ....screaming and clapping and yelling!!! It was so good. And that was the second time I saw the Heartbreakers in concert.....The first time was with Tom Petty!!!
My favorite Petty song. I never saw that video before. The song is a golden rocker. Be careful if you use it as a driving song. You might find yourself speeding over the posted limit by the halfway point. ;-)
Check out "Even The Losers" next. Epic song. In terms of buried meanings, the lyrics in this song, "Trees went by, Me and Del were singing, "Little Runaway". I was flying" is a reference to Del Shannon and his early r&r classic hit "Little Runaway". Tom stole his bass player (Howie Epstein) for the Heartbreakers; Del was not amused.
My favorite Tom Petty song...followed closely by "Don't Come Around Here No More". What a reaction day!! 3 absolute bangers!! "Into the Great Wide Open" is a great song that tells a story. "Free Fallin" and "American Girl" are some classic Petty songs to check out as well.
He had me at Damn the Torpedoes. I highly recommend She's a Woman in Love (It's Not Me). So many great songs. That was a reference to Del Shannon, Little Runaway. Not sure if you have reacted to that song.
By the way, you guys put out so much content. I so appreciate your dedication to your subscribers and others that find it. It takes work and it doesn't go unnoticed! I have to say Thank You!
Technically, this was from Tom Petty's solo album Full Moon Fever without the Heartbreakers, although Mike Campbell helped write this song, and various other members are on other tracks. This was recorded with Jeff Lynne, and was around the same time recording was happening for the Travelling Wilbury's Volume One, so George Harrison and Roy Orbison are also on a couple tracks on the album.
One of my 10 favorite Petty songs, was nice to see you listen to this Legend again. He made so much amazing music with the Heartbreakers and a few more with the wilbury's
I have a personal connection to this song. My sister's former boyfriend was a friend of Tom Petty and one night, they were in a limo riding around. The little guy he is running with was based on Dale...and they were in the limo singing "Runaway!" This has got to be my favorite of all Tom's songs because of the connection!!
There's good music in every decade. I love the music from the 80s but there are artists from today that I like such as Taylor Swift, Harry Styles and Beyonce. Actually my music taste runs from the 50s to present day.
You "Boomers" need to stop fetishizing the 70's, and 80's as if rock died after those decades were over because rock and roll never died, its alive and kicking, and even more albums are being released today than any other time. And no, I am not talking about the souless radio stuff lacking riffs/solos, I am talking about stuff you need to find for yourself under the hundreds of rock labels still alive today, and independent artists releasing on places like Bandcamp.
Mr. Petty (RIP) hailed from Gainesville, FL, which is famous for more than just being Tom Petty's birthplace. So trippy. Yep. Great entertainer, full package, he left us wanting more.
This song is Tom's attitude on life: not waiting for something to happen, just go out & chase it. If you create a road trip playlist, this song will be perfect. Love you guys!
Love, Tom Petty. My wife , big big fan and I have seen him 5 times. You Wreck Me, banger. As an encore, he did different covers, that we're all ways cool. Love him at Red Rocks. So dearly missed. R. I. P.
Heh. And he has one of the deepest rabbit holes in music. You still have so many great songs to get to. Refugee, You Got Lucky, Don't Do Me Like That, American Girl, Rebels, Yer So Bad and many more.
This whole album, "Full Moon Fever" is chock full of hits. Not only did Jeff Lynne co-write and produce; but George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jim Keltner (from The Travelling Wilburys) also make appearances on the album. I did not set out on a road trip for 30 years without starting on this song (track 5 on the album) and then resetting to the beginning and playing it all the way through. A fun thing to hear on the CD version of the album (which came out in 1989 when CDs were still relatively new) is the message that plays after this song--Tom Petty speaking--"Hello CD listeners. We've come to the point in this album where those listing on tape or record will have to stand up--or sit down--and turn over the record or tape. In fairness to those listeners we'll now take a few seconds before we begin side two...[pause]...Thank you. Now here's side two."
You all stand out by doing this together. Love your channel…thanks for doing my favorite Tom Petty Jam! I used to play this song loud when I got the Chopper on Call of Duty! Lol
Note that this song is not by Petty and the Heartbreakers (although it was later performed at Heartbreakers concerts),,,,it is from Petty's solo album, Full Moon Fever, produced by Jeff Lynne (of ELO and Traveling Wilburys). The song was cowritten by Petty, Lynne, and Mike Campbell of the Heartbreakers, and the personnel on it are Tom Petty - lead and backing vocals, 6 and 12 string acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, tambourine, handclaps; Mike Campbell - lead guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, slide guitar, Dobro, keyboards; Jeff Lynne - bass guitar, rhythm guitar, guitar synthesizer, piano, keyboards, backing vocals, handclaps; and Phil Jones - drums, percussion. Other members of the Heartbreakers, as well as the Wilburys, appear on some other tracks on the album, but not this one.
Tom was my first musical love! Saw him a bunch of times with the Heartbreakers at arenas, but I'll bever forget how lucky I was to see him with Mudcrutch at a much smaller venue-- the only time I could actually see HIM, instead of a tiny dot far away on the stage, or on the screen.
I have listened to this song easily 100+ times in my life and never seen the video before. The artistry gives me a "Heavy Metal/Scooby Doo" feel, am I the only one? I am shocked you guys didn't catch the "King Kong" segment of his dreamscape.
Ya'll need to add "The Postman" to your movie list. Tom Petty makes an appearance in it, playing himself. It stars Kevin Costner, kinda out there, but I liked it.
The first time I saw this video it reminded me of "Yellow Submarine" and "Heavy Metal". Definitely a song to blast on the car sound system as you head down the road.
The album this is from Tom Petty without the Heartbreakers it's tom petty, jeff lynne, george harrison who both sing background vocals and play guitar and ringo from the Beatles on drums
I recommend "Into the Great Wide Open." It's a great story song about a rock star named Eddie - and Johnny Depp plays Eddie in the music video, plus Faye Dunaway and Chynna Phillips (Wilson Phillips) make appearances in the video as well. It's one of my favorites!
There is a video of a young Tom Petty doing a live version of a song called "A Little Bit of Soul" made popular by a 60's group called The Music Explosion. I think you'll enjoy the "Hippie Vibe".
Great job Squad! Here’s a suggestion. In this song, Tom sings about having the radio on, and he and Del were singing little runaway. He’s referencing a great song by Del Shannon called “Runaway” (1961). Tom Petty was a big fan of Del Shannon, and righteously so! You should react to some Del. He’s got some great tunes in his catalog.
I've known this song since it came out, but I've never seen this video before. I think it actually takes away from enjoyment of the song. I feel the same way about some of his other videos. A lot of times, music videos were done that didn't necessarily have anything to do with the song or the lyrics, but instead were based on a crazy idea from the director or the artists themselves.
Great album. Tom does a great cover of The Byrds song "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" on this album Full Moon Fever. The Byrds and Bob Dylan were big influences on Tom. The Byrds and Dylan changed Rock in 1965 by electrifying Folk music and creating the Folk Rock and Country Rock genres.
My understanding is this song was inspired by Tom's drive from Florida to California to audition for a recording contract.. so he was literally running down his dream....
The line at the beginning "me and Del were singing little runaway" is a reference to Tom singing along as the song Runaway by Del Shannon plays on the radio while he's driving. Runaway is an absolute classic pop song from 1961. Definitely worth a listen to.
Thank you guys for getting to this!!! This song is meant to be played loud in your car with your foot on the gas!!!
Indeed!
Absolutely agree -- One of the best road trip songs of all time!
Been there, Done that, got the tickets to prove it.
Oh Hell to the Yes!!
100% fact!
I love this -- at the beginning, Tom says, "Me and Del were singing . . . little runaway." He's referring to Del Shannon's song, "Runaway," playing on the car radio. A classic 1961 song.
And a good personal friend of Tom's. Them singing together in the car is something that surely actually happened.
Del was supposed to take Roy Orbison's place in the Wilburys, but he too died unexpectedly.
The wilburys covered Del Shannon's Runaway , outstanding
I'm surprised they missed it, since they reviewed "Runaway" three months ago.
Thanks captain obvious
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That" "American Girl" and "Refugee"!!! Great early Tom Petty songs.
And 100 others. Lol
You nailed it. I love all those songs!!!
I love those, and also She's a Woman in Love, and I Need to Know
@@cjonesufc They have not done anything from his 'Damn The Torpedoes' album! They've done 7 Petty songs now, and "Breakdown" is the only early one.
@tessmagetessera6141 good choice. they've done Mary Jane's Last Dance. This their 7th Petty song.
Mike Campbell (no known relation) is an incredibly underrated guitarist. His solos are always good and always fit the song.
I read somewhere that the end of the song goes on so long because Mike's solo was fire and Tom didn't want to fade out early.
Top 25 all time…The Dirty Knobs are INCREDIBLE, Mike’s band
Yes, we just saw The Dirty Knobs with The Who a few months Go. Mike and his band were great!! and of course The Who

Jeff Lynne helped write this tune, did production, played a lot of instruments and added vocals.

This is the best driving song I have ever heard, when this track came out in the 90’s.

Been following Tom since the Mudcrutch days…..his concert’s never disappoint sure do miss him
Tom was my first musical love!

His music will live on forever
Ya'll need to add "The Postman" to your movie list. Tom Petty makes an appearance in it, playing himself. It stars Kevin Costner, kinda out there, but I liked it.
I love that you shared this, one of my faves from Tom Petty. Their song "Refugee" was a huge early hit, especially in Australia, back in the day! ❣
"You got Lucky" 🔥🔥🔥
My favorite Petty song.

The first time I saw this video it reminded me of "Yellow Submarine" and "Heavy Metal". Definitely a song to blast on the car sound system as you head down the road.
I saw Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers backing Bob Dylan in 1986...Wonderful combination...
I think Refugee is my favorite Tom Petty song. It is worth a listen.
The album this is from Tom Petty without the Heartbreakers it's tom petty, jeff lynne, george harrison who both sing background vocals and play guitar and ringo from the Beatles on drums

RIP Tom. A great musician and story teller.
One of my favorite songs by the late, great Tom Petty.
Blew My Speakers Out…bought the cassette, popped it in, sittin’ in traffic. Blew. Them. Out!

Funny thing you may or may not know, Tom and Del were actual friends in real life. Tom added that line just to make his friend Del happy.

Always respected Tom Petty but about 14 years ago he did a public radio interview and realized his true stature as a songwriter.
One of my favourites! Great song!!
The line at the beginning "me and Del were singing little runaway" is a reference to Tom singing along as the song Runaway by Del Shannon plays on the radio while he's driving. Runaway is an absolute classic pop song from 1961. Definitely worth a listen to.
Funny thing you may or may not know, Tom and Del were actual friends in real life. Tom added that line just to make his friend Del happy.
