This is one of the songs that defined CCR in the early years. Good sultry bluesy rock
CCR is just awesome. I love the blues! John Lee Hooker, Joan Osbourne, Zach Williams (Chain Breaker), Status Quo (Spinning Wheel Blues). Oh yeah. More 🥰
Dale Hawkins, known as the father of swamp rock, first recorded and had a hit with this in 1957. While the CCR originals are all phenomenal, so are their covers like this, Cottonfields, Midnight Special, Hello Mary Lou, Heard It Through the Grapevine, I Put A Spell On You, etc.
Love MIdnight Special but have to include Down on the Corner
I have the original from Dale Hawkins 45rpm.
Preach brother
@@scottromer8584Down on the corner isn’t a cover tho. This post was about their covers.
proud mary
The first time I heard this song was in Danang Vietnam in 1969. A friend came into my hooch at About 7:00 am and tells me he found a new song on the jukebox in the EM club that I needed to hear. So we went on down and put some coins in the machine and listened to it about 6 times in a row.
In 67 I was in the EM club in Catania Sicily and the band played this every night. And some nights they had a burlesque type dancer. So pretty and I had a crush on her. Time of the ship USS Liberty and the Six Day War in the mideast. They played at the base theater "The Good The Bad and The Ugly" every day, saw it 13 times in a row.... many more since then. 🤠
From one Vietnam vet to another, "Welcome Home Brother". I was just north of you, Phu Bai (US. Army / 596th Signal Co. 1970).
em club?
John Fogerty's label colleague Merl Saunders heard this on the car radio when he was on tour. He didn't know about Creedence's new band name but he knew John's singing voice. So he was like, "I dunno who this Creedence is, but that's John singing it!"
@mikal0457 em for Enlisted Men's club
This song is such a groove. It’s criminal that this short version even exists. You really need to listen to the complete version, because it’s so great to get fully immersed in this tune.
Yeah, should have played the original, I knew from the length of the video it was not the best version, reactors do this to Slow Ride, too, they are either unaware or don't research enough but it is what it is.
The short version was made so it could be played on AM radio, same as The Doors 'Light my Fire' , Iron Butterfly 'In a Gadda Da Vida, Led Zepplin 'Whole lot of Love' ELP 'Fanfare for a Common Man' to name a few. Years and years of playing tunes that were 3min 30 sec and when they were released you would hear the tune at least once an hour if not more for as long it was on the charts. Playing anything on AM radio over 4 mins was almost uncalled for. FM, at least here in Southern Ontario , was mainly classical music in the early 70's and was until 74-77 that FM stations started playing rock. And unlike the FM stations of today, stations would play 15+ min tunes or entire album sides
Yes! Just like when they listened to the shortened My Sharona… I darn near flipped! I hope y’all get to listen to the full version some day. It’s even more greatness than what you got the experience. 👍
If these guys want some CCR blues, they need to hear "Penthouse Pauper" or "Tombstone Shadow."
@@ContrarianCorner I’ve always been partial to Graveyard Train.
Can’t go wrong with CCR. This song has really grown on me over the years. Recommend if you haven’t yet: Fortunate Son, Have you ever seen the rain, Traveling Band, Up around the Bend. So many good songs in catalog.
My favorite song of theirs is fortunate son
They may have done that bot don't quote me. I know they did Bad Moon Rising
They love CCR so they've done quite a bit from them. They did do Fortunate Son already, but not the other two so hopefully they see this. :)
Just search their channel, they`ve already done several of those🙂
All their stuff is great. I like Green River
CCR had their own sound that no one ever duplicated and never made a bad song. Each one is worthy and awesome.
Also, the full-length version has some of John Fogerty's best guitar work.
John Fogerty created that sound - he WAS that sound.
[ he was later sued by a record company for sounding too much like himself - He won.
Interesting story].
📻🙂
@@jeffking4176 Yep, the only artist ever sued for plagiarizing himself. Thankfully the judge thought it was a s stupid as we do,
Never heard a drummer anywhere who can cover this beat.
@@jeffking4176 CCR was great don't forget the other band member's they were there too
Back in the day the engineers made more use of the two channels of stereo. Can't beat CCR. Have a Trippy Tuesday!!
CCR was basically a hits factory in the late 60s/early 70s. Glad you hit this one. Wish you had hit the 8½ minute full version - funkier/bluesier. Cheers....
This song always gave me a Steppenwolf vibe for some reason. It's a great guitar riff on a killer bass line. ☮🤎🎶
Not Steppenwolf, Howlin Wolf
Jay & Amber, you'll love their "Sweet Hitch Hiker" and "Travelin' Band" !!!
Travelin' Band is 2:10 banger, so do both songs at the same time!!
I had Sweet Hitchhiker in a 45 when I was a kid, I can't remember what the B side was. How about Up Around The Bend, with Run Through The Jungle for the B side (I have that 45 now).
@@kraig7777 they did Run Through The Jungle 4 weeks ago, but have not done Up Around The Bend. I still have the Proud Mary 45 with Born On The Bayou as the B side.
Who'll Stop The Rain would be my vote.
“Long As I Can See The Light” will take you to church, and has a great sax solo! It’s a gospel vibe. If you want blues check out their cover of “I Put A Spell On You”, great guitar!!
"I put a spell on you" is pure fire
They reacted to I Put A Spell On You around Halloween last year.
You know it Randy. The sax in that song is killer.
"Penthouse Pauper" is straight up 12-bar blues and kicks a$$! Same with "Tombstone Shadow."
This was THE BAND at clubs, party’s and on the radio when I was young in the late 60’s. Nobody sounded like CCR!
CCR Greatest Hits goes with me on all road trips. Absolutely love this band!
Love this song, the long version was played at soooo many parties and dances. Just a great song they did…😎🍺
it's played a lot because it's simple to play. and easy to dance to.
@@Hobodeluxe960 Never heard a drummer who could do it.
@@RideAcrossTheRiveryou must mean couldn't. either that or you need to get out more.
@@Hobodeluxe960 Two dozen drummers I've played with and none of them could do that pattern. Never saw a bar band drummer who could do that either.
@@RideAcrossTheRiversimple backbeat. a lot of drummers have trouble playing 8th notes with the left foot is probably why. count goes 1 AND 2 And 3 AND 4 and 1 .....hh with the lf on the 1 ,2,3,4 kick on the ANDS
First album. Love um
I USED TO WAKE MY WIFE UP WITH THIS SONG. I WOULD SING IT TO HER EACH MORNING SHE WANTED TO GET UP EARLY. SHE SAYS IT LET HER KNOW I LOVED HER. I STILL DO IT ON OCCASION AFTER 40 YEARS OF BEING TOGETHER.
Remember a friend dancing to this song. Strong memories with this one. CCR was everywhere..... such a popular band, even here in Melbourne, Australia.
I was in Melbourne back in the 90's, for work cool place.
@@catmanflorida2839 yes it is:)
This song was used in a big way in the Vietnam movie "Apocalypse Now"... can't hear it now without thinking about that scene.
I had a 200lb black Bull Mastiff named Suzie Q 1998-2010 ✌💖☮
I remember being stationed in Singapore (New Zealand army) in the mid 80's. This was the go to song to play for the bar girls to dance too! We had a lot of Vietnam vets still in our army in those days, it was like reliving their R&R days in Bangkok ... We'd play these songs for the girls in Thailand to dance too, great days.
I like the reverb effect they put on the audio in this song. It reminds me of listening to an old radio.
The funny thing is that CCR had lots of bluesy music. For more of that, try these tracks: "The Working Man", "Get Down Woman", "Penthouse Pauper", "Tombstone Shadow", "Feelin' Blue", and "Graveyard Train". Those are straight-up bluesy. And for Amber, this groovy sound is all over their deeper cuts. For CCR with a bit of psych influence, check out "Gloomy" and "Walk on the Water". You will not be disappointed by any of these tracks. And please, always look for the full-length tracks. "Suzie Q" is really over 8 minutes long, and if you loved the guitar on the shorter version, you'll really love it on the longer version where they really stretch the jam out.
This is such a great song, but in January 1971 this song was on the radio as my mom pulled into the funeral home of my dads funeral.... I had just turned 9 two weeks earlier.... Even though it always brings this memory to my immediate attention it always gives me a big SMILE.... Thanks you two 🙏❤️
Down 👏 By 👏 The 👏 River by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. You guys would love it.
Did you ever hear that by Buddy Miles Express?
@@andrewbrimmer1797 I haven't.
One of my favorite songs! The long version (= Part 1 & Part 2) has even more of those great shredding sounds! I usually tidy my house on CCR's long songs. "Suzie Q", "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "Keep On Chooglin", "Graveyard Train", "Ramble Tamble", "Effigy". I collect everything that doesn't belong in that room and put it back in its right place while enjoying the music of CCR!
Not enough ppl telling them about the long full version.
Jay and Amber, you should revisit this song. The album version actually goes on for another few minutes with lots of guitar soloing. Susie Q and I Put A Spell On You were as close to psychedelia as CCR got. For good down and dirty CCR blues you should check out Get Down Woman.
This song was their first big hit and the only Top 40 hit not written by John Fogerty. Reached number 10 in Canada. all good.
I have a core memory of this song from childhood around maybe 1978. I lived in Charlton, MA and our driveway was all broken and full of holes and dirt. There were some black-eyed susans growing in them and this song popped into my head making me happy because my mother’s name is Susan. It’s silly, but I ALWAYS think of that when the song or the flower comes to my attention.
That's sweet.
I’m sorry! I’m not familiar with that type of flower! Is that only native to the U.S.?
@@wendyryder2708Yes, it is. It’s a very sturdy plant with narrow, bright yellow petals and a large dark central bulb. I recall they are kind of woody in the stem and hard to pick.
An all-time FAVORITE! There was actually a dance that went with this song, too. ❤
EDIT: The "sound" you mentioned is to replicate singing through a megaphone like singers did in the 1920's & 30's. In fact, the dance I mentioned above was a little bit "flapper-like".
“Long as I can see the light” and “midnight special” and “someday never comes” was my top 3 songs from CCR! All the songs are awesome but these 3 have a special place and time in my life! Great song and great reaction!
YO, The Midnight Special TV show was good also! I liked them both.
Even mentioning “Someday never comes” makes you a boss! My all time favorite CCR song! 1. Someday never comes 2. Born on the bayou 3. Green River.
Alright my babies..... Looks like we're going way back.... Creedence Clearwater Revival are a great band and have put their mark on music history ‼️💯🔥🤘🏼😎🤘🏼
This is a good one. I’ll always remember the scene in Apocalypse Now when they played this. It was surreal.
Travelin Band by CCR, that's the one you guys are going to love!
CCR!!! 👍🏼💯🙌🏼
Jay and Amber you guys rock, made me smile to see john fogerty 🔥✌️
Another good CCR song and love how you reacted. Sure wish you’d come around to “Ramble Tamble.” You haven’t heard Fogerty at his best until you have listened to his blistering solo on this song. Oh, well, maybe next time.
Great song, but I think his guitar on 'Keep on Chooglin' is better. How about Penthouse Pauper? Another killer guitar. Nobody mentions that one.
Bought this on a 45rpm in 1968....still have it somewhere I think.
This was CCR's foray into the "psychedelia" sound.
I'll listen to CCR any time. More, please.
I love their songs, bad moon rising, fortunate son, their version of heard it through the grapevine, looking out my door, who'll stop the rain, up around the bend
They are so good. Growing up with their albums playing brings back memories of the good times. Still blows my mind; they have the most number two songs for a band never having a number one song. I know every album of theirs was in our home and playing on the player.
I agree. CCR is fantastic! This song has such a cool bluesy vibe. Because of that bluesy feel, as I watched Jordan and Amber react to this song, I thought of a blues artist I think they should check out - Jonny Lang. I think they would totally connect with his songs like Hit the Ground Runnin' and Lie to Me. Who else thinks they would vibe with Jonny Lang?
They were really only from '67-'72, which is amazing in itself - and so many refer to them in the present tense.
@@kurtpflegl9724 They would...I saw Lang, Live, he opened for Aerosmith on their Nine Lives Tour. Even bought his CD afterward.
@@Roh_Echt That's awesome! I've seen Jonny Lang twice now, but both times were in more recent years. I saw him once in Vegas around 2011 or so, and then in California like five years ago. Both times he put on a phenomenal show. I love the way he changes the songs when he does them live. What did you like about his live show? Also, what is the first song you would suggest for Jordan and Amber to listen to from Lang?
Hey guys thanks for hitting up my favorite band of all time again. There is a much longer version to this song you should check out with a lot more instrumental solo with a psychedelic twist. Some more great ones to check out, Travlin' Band, Ramble Tamble, Pagan Baby, Long as I Can See the light, Up Around the Bend.
"Ramble Tamble"
@@h.w.hilton6819 right I messed up
I vote for "Lookin Out My Backdoor". I light hearted short song.
@@bryanwhitton1784 they already did that one
@@donnacorey5682 Cool. Long time subscriber. I guess my memory isn't as good as it once was. Well, I know it isn't. 😉
This song by CCR was used in Apocalypse Now, iconic Vietnam movie.
This was their remake of an earlier song. They definitely tinkered with the stereo sound on this song. This was kinda the sound at that time.
This was CCR's first national hit reaching #11 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. This was just before they adopted the more swampy sound of their later records. This was originally written and recorded by Dale Hawkins in the 50's.
That is the 45 version side 1 side 2 is part 2. I was hoping you picked the full album version but if you don't know then you don't know. Lol You can't go wrong with CCR. Heard It Through The Grapevine is another long but great one...if you haven't reacted to yet.
Grew up with CCR, My dad’s favorite band! I knew every song growing up in the 1980’s! Born in 1972. CCR is from California and recorded all of their swamp rock Louisiana songs having never stepped foot in Cajun Country!
Love them!
They have so many more sounds than this that you guys haven't heard yet. But this was off that first debut album, again one of the great debut albums. You guys would love anything off of it. But definitely check out Penthouse Pauper.
It's a storytelling thing with a punchline at the end, but it's in the style of older Blues. On the other hand, it's incredibly funky, and the guitar work on it just slashes. His voice is incredible. It's filled with blues and soul and it's so biting.
I love everything about this song and I remember when I heard it in high school and I had had two of their later albums but I'd never had this one although I knew a couple songs from it. I went out and bought the vinyl this and start playing it and I just loved it so much. Especially this song.
And you didn't comment on it, but to me my favorite part of this in a lot of ways is that bass guitar line. It's the interplay between all four of the elements that gives it that groovy feel that still sounds like Creedence.
This song was in the movie "Apocalypse Now."
In the Army, back in 69.....me and my buddies cruising in my new Firebird. 8 track cranked and blast'in CCR. All the tracks were great.....but Choog'lin was our favorite. In 3 weeks.....we all got our orders. That was the last time we were all together....and young. CCR still brings back good memories.
I heard it from the Grapevine.
Killer song. CCR smashes it.
When this song came on at a party, out came the “smokes” and everyone fell back into the music. The long version was definitely the most popular. But several other songs by Led Zep, Steppenwolf and others were on that soundtrack of our lives.
When I was younger, (I’m 32), there was a 90’s tv Disney movie called Susie Q, played by Kimberly the pink Power Ranger from the original US show, Power Rangers. This song by CCR, as you can imagine, was it’s theme song.
The CCR recording of Susie Q is a cover of the Dale Hawkins recording from 1957. That version charted at #27.
Bands back then were expected to mix it up a bit musically. Not like today's one trick ponies. One of the reasons I still listen to all that old stuff.
You'll have to listen to the extended version of this song and "Heard it Thru the Grapevine"! Fogerty's guitar work REALLY stands out in these versions!!
The line bass of CCR always awesome!!!!!! Stu Cook is a master 👍
Glad you mentioned Stu. Always seems to me that people think John Fogerty IS CCR and neglect Stu, Tom Fogerty and Doug Clifford. Cheers....
The recording equipment was evolving with the music and producers and engineers are the unsung magic behind so many recordings. The 60's and 70's used a lot of panning between channels and I can't understand why it's not still used much.
Susy Q was the song that put them on the radar....the rest is history. Please consider the following songs: Bootleg, Bootleg, Ramble Tamble, Before you accuse me (So Bluesy)
My Dad's favorite group. My Parents saw them a lot back in the 60s. As well as Janis, Jimi,Santana and The Grateful Dead in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
Like Jeff Campbell said Dale Hawkins was the first to record this song, and he wrote the lyrics, but the music and the iconic guitar licks were written and performed by James Burton, who was only 15 years old!!
As a session guitarist, James went on to play guitar on so many records, it's probably in the hundreds.
I know you've heard him. He is Elvis's guitar player on the live version of "Suspicious Minds" and the rest of the Live in Vegas album. He played with a lot of big name stars, Jerry Lee Lewis and Emmylou Harris to name a couple.
Dang I just LOVE CCR.. Grew up with my Dad playing them and that's where I got my love of their music from and continued into adulthood for me!! Their swampy bluesy sound I'm in love with.. One band I wouldve love to see live..
The best rendition/scene of Susie Q is in the "Movie Apocalypse Now," The River Concert, Terrifying, but, it actually happened just as shown.
A couple years ago a couple of us were skiing when my partner fell and cracked her tibia. Ski patrol got her down to their center, with me following shortly thereafter. I parked outside and left the car running with a CCR Greatest Hits CD running. thinking that it would be only a few minutes before we left. Shortly after I arrived, they wanted something that was out in the car, and the youngest of the patrol ladies went out to get it. It took her a half-hour to finally come back, with her eyes wide open. "Who is that band playing in your car? They are incredible!!".
And a new CCR fanatic was born that afternoon..... :)
He just got started! There is WAY more to the Solo so look for Suzi 2!
The second verse is sung by Tom Fogerty their voices were very similar
I wondered when yall was gonna do Suzy Q. This is my favorite CCR song. I wanted to hear the whole song. But this was awesome.
Recommend "Someday Never Comes", anyone with kids MUST listen to the story of this song!!!! Time is fleeting and your kids will grow so fast you will be amazed. So many CCR songs are iconic but my favorites are "Someday Never Comes" and "Lodi".
Always love songs that adjusted sound to each speaker, a sampler platter for the ears...just to taste tease your mind with sound.
For me, Suzie Q is forever associated with the USO Playboy bunnies scene in Apocalypse Now. Trippy!
I first heard the long version at a music fest other than Woodstock in '69. It went on and on and on.......I loved it.
Love the whole left chanel, right chanel effect through this song
This was the radio version of Suzie Q. You need to check out the original version on their debut album. Longer guitar solo.
A great song about a hostess snack! 😂
My favorite CCR song.
Summer 1968. It was a great time for music. This one especially.
Yessss! Love this song and their version of Heard it through the grapevine.” My 2 favorites of theirs- 🙂 I love the funky grooves - 💝💙👍
This song brings me back to my teens. It's as awesome now as it was then. Thanks for this and I love you guys.
Back in those days for any song longer than 4 min. Would have a Shorter AM radio version released as a 45 RPM SINGLE, for the TOP 40 of the Week! True History!
This song is a (great) cover to a late 50s song written for listeners to dance the Stroll. It is exactly how to relax while still moving to the beat.
Now you almost have to listen to a song by Susie Quatro. She just had her birthday about a week ago. She had a lot of hit songs. And some wery popular reffs.
John Fogerty original member of the band is touring in the UK at the moment, he wrote many of their prolific songs, and has been fighting the record companies for years for the copyright to them, this January he succeeded, another band to check out Wishbone Ash, tracks to check, The King will Come, Sometime World, and Blowin Free, all of the Album which is an Iconic masterpiece in a lot of people’s eyes Argus. 🤘🎸😎💀✊
I danced barefoot at a lot of bon fires barefoot to this song in the 70s! Thanks for the reminders!!! Wonderful memories! We had a great time back then...
I'm 69 and have been listening to this song since I was 17 yesterday old. I've never thought of it before, but I think when his voice switch, that it was because he was acting like he was on the phone talking to her.
The long version is almost 15 minutes. They only played the short version on AM radio, and the long version was played on FM stereo radio for all the stoned people back in 1969.
When I grew up in Detroit in the fifties, Susie Q was the name of a restaurant that my family to go to once in a while. There were nine in our family so we didn’t go there often. It was across the street from a church we would attend sometimes that wasn’t our parish church. We got so excited when dad said we were going to that church because we knew we would go to Susie Q afterwards for fish and chips!
OMG! Susie Q! This totally reminds me of my childhood, my mother had a 45 of this song, that is a vinyl 45 record… I played it a lot when I was young!! Loved it❤Great memories !! Thanks for the reaction!👏👏👏
I heard them in San Jose practicing in the 60s before they were famous. They were called The Gollywogs. Love me some CCR
Love CCR. One of the greatest groups. Green River. Run through the jungle (chilling when you realize it’s about being in the Viet Nam jungle during the war). Born on the bayou. Bad moon rising. Covers like Midnight special, Cotton fields, Hello Mary Lou. The list is long my friends.
It's that analog sound from that era.
It's so rich, you get bathed in it. I love when bands manipulate the levels.
There was definitely a sonic touch of The Doors in some of the tones and vibe. It's such a perfectly conceived, produced, and executed music by CCR.
Watching you both get immersed in the music,
your dance moves, Jay you were the base to Amber's treble. So glad you both like the song.
Actually, that's technically "Suzie Q, Part 1". The full song runs 8.37 on the album, so they just chopped it in half for the single; turn it over and the song continues.
John just turned 78. I'm always aware of his birthday, since it's mine, too. (Thankfully, a bit of while until 78 for me.) Also on the same day, Ms. Gladys Knight, Colbie Caillat, and the great session bassist, Leland Sklar. We just need a drummer and we could get a band going. (I can't keep the beat, though, so don't ask me.)
Creedence! Now STRYPER!
This was done as a USO Show song in the movie Apocalypse Now. It's another Vietnam Era song popular with the GIs.
I love how you love this music.
Ever and always my favorite Okies.
Jay, I can't believe you didn't pickup on that heavy bass line that underscored and carried the whole song!!
We wore out several discs of that song in jukeboxes in Pizza Planets all over OKC in the late ‘60’s.
Great song.
Ahhh, some hippie jam.
Finally! I have suggested this song several times. It is my favorite CCR song.
This song will always remind me of the movie "Apocalypse Now."
Awesome cover by Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids in that movie (they played the band in that scene as well)!
