Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Here Comes My Girl", "Don't Do Me Like That" "American Girl" and "Refugee"!!! More early Petty!!
Breakdown !!
Whenever I hear American Girl all I can think of is Silence of the Lambs.
“Learning to Fly”
Yes, Here Comes My Girl !! excellent song
Indeed. You said it all ;)
(I also like "Love is a long long road")
This song has a fascinating back story which may help explain the oddity of it. So Jimmy Iovine (Tom's producer on a few album's) was producing a solo album for Stevie Nicks. He called Tom and asked him if he knew of any new good song writers. Tom told him that he really like this guy Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics, so Jimmy got Dave to come down and work with Stevie. Dave showed up with the chorus of the song "don't come around here no more" to this Indian style sound, and Stevie loved it, but was pitching a fit that she wanted Tom to come write the rest of the lyrics. Tom flew out to New York, came in wrote the lyrics, and left with the song. BTW, Dave Stewart is the guy with the hookah on the mushroom in the video.
You forgot the part where Dave probably slept with her. Then in the morning heard her throwing Joe Walsh, who she'd broken up with the night before, out of her house and she said "Don't come around here no more".
@@fletchbundy Just 2 days ago I watched a RUclips video by Professor of Rock where he talked about all of this. Turns out... Stevie slept with just about every male involved with this song at one point or another... That's Rock'n'Roll I guess.
I had also heard that Stevie was always hanging around and showing up while tom was recording and they were getting annoyed at Stevie because she was getting stalkerish.
I think a lot of the "weird" factor comes from Dave Stewart. Didn't he produce this?
Wasn't Stevie dating an Eagle and was over heard telling them don't come around here no more and that's what inspired the song?
This was a collaboration with the Eurythmics. The female backing vocal tracks are Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart is on the sitar. When you see Alice screaming as they're carving her up like a cake, that's Annie's voice.
No kidding I never knew that. Now I hear Annie’s voice
Annie Lennox does not sing background vocals on this song. The background vocalists are Marilyn Martin, Stephanie Spruill, and Sharon Celani.
Definitely not her voice
Yeah, Dave Stewart co-wrote and co-produced the track and he played sitar on it but it doesn't feature Annie Lennox on backing vocals.
I like how people know Dave Stewart is involved, and they automatically assume it’s a collaboration between Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Eurythmics. 😅
Apparently this song... And the entire album... Was such a departure for Tom that the label fought him on it. But he felt it was important to keep growing musically and kept fighting. Turned into one of their biggest hits.
When I heard the news that Tom had passed I actually cried and I'm not a cheese puff. He was the voice of my adolescent and teen years.🙏
I had the same reaction when I heard of David Crosby's death! I cried sporadically for a couple days. Still feeling pretty weepy. End of an era I guess, incredibly grateful that their music will bring us pleasure until we die.
Hit to me hard too.
The same thing happened to me when Chris Cornell passed. RIP to the amazing artists we love. You are all dearly missed.
Strangely, his passing hit me hardest of all... Prince, Bowie: all enormous. Not sure who will cut me even deeper... Lydon?
Excellent choice.. Tom will always be timeless... the backstory on this one is.. Stevie Nicks had the idea for this song with help from Dave Stewart (Eurythmics)... she passed the idea onto Tom ... and he turned it into what you hear...
Annie Lennox is singing the female backing vocal in this tune.
A bit more backstory is don't come around here no more was what Dave Stewart heard Stevie tell her then boyfriend Joe Walsh during an argument. Get out and don't come around here no more.
And that's Dave Lennox as the hookah smoking caterpillar
@@laurathornton1456 I take it you mean Dave Stewart
Yes... this song has an INTERESTING backstory! Dave Stewart, Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh, etc. The Professor of Rock has a great video about it.
The song is terrific and the video is as iconic as they come.
The story behind this song is crazy!
This was written mostly by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics, based on an encounter with..... Stevie Nicks! There is even rumor she sang some of the backup vocals, but with no credit.
Anyways! So in the heyday of the Eurythmics, when Sweet dreams are made of this was huge, after a show, Dave Stewart is walking backstage and Stevie Nicks is standing in a doorway. Dave didn't know who she was, just that he thought she was hot and wanted to get to know her.
So, they get to talking, she invites him back to her place with some other people. While Stevie and them are in the bathroom doing il legalities LOL he walks around checking out the place, eventually falling asleep on Stevie's bed.
He said he woke around 3am to the sound of rustling, looked up, and Stevie is trying on different Victorian outfits in front of him. So cut to the chase, they hooked up.
Next morning, before he can get out of there, who shows up knocking at her door.... None other than Joe Walsh (Eagles). Who Stevie had just broken up with only a day and a half before! Joe is there to get his stuff. Dave is inside wondering how the heck he got himself into this situation.
SO....... Stevie, to get Joe to go away, knowing she can't let him in, begins screaming, DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE, GET OUT OF HERE, GO AWAY, DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE!!!
Dave Stewart took that line, and eventually created the song. He then teamed up with Tom Petty eventually to release the song.
The rock and roll life was crazy!!
Dave did present the song idea to Stevie, but she came up with different lyrics, and apparently got mad at some point when it didn't fit was Dave was thinking for the song. So she was aware of what the true reference was.

Here is the link the the full story. The Professor of Rock has some great stuff on behind he scenes knowledge, interviews, and history especially 70s through 90s rock.
I was hoping you would do this one. Great collaboration with hookah smoking caterpillar Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics on electric sitar. It's his quirky production that really makes this song. One of my favorite Petty songs.
You can clearly hear Stevie’s voice in parts of the background
MTV wore this out. It was quite stunning in its creativity, just beautifully done...
I ate it up every time like so many jelly beans
@@brt5273 Oh, yes! Every time...
The thing about Tom Petty is the fact that he was a good sport about making music videos and went all in - he and the band. And he was like that through his whole career. I can respect that.
His lesser known duet with Stevie Nicks,”Insider” is still my favorite. They were really good friends and I adore her.
Insider is such an amazing song. It is way up there on my list of favorite Petty songs.
This song almost never gets covered by reactors, yet I think it's Tom Petty's best. I remember the first time I watched it was on MuchMusic (in Canada) at about 2am. I was in the basement by myself and the entire house was silent and dark. Then this came on and totally blew me away. Been a favorite tune and video ever since.
The song itself was based almost verbatim on an argument Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics overheard when Stevie Nicks was throwing her former lover, Joe Walsh, out of the house during a party.
Oh, and Stewart was the hookah smoking caterpillar at the very beginning.
One of my favorite Tom Petty songs!!!! Such a calm diss song ❤. Another favorite is “You Got Lucky”
This song was very controversial when it came out in 1985. The cake cutting scene was considered an act of violence against women. The media made a real big deal about it. It turned out to be widely considered one of Tom Petty’s best songs. I agree! It’s definitely one of my favorites.
If you think this video is controversial try his video for Mary Janes last dance haha .
crubullying before woke was a thing
Petty responded to that saying it wasn't violence against women but violence against cake.
@@BoondockRoberts It wasn't even chocolate cake...
Yeah this is EASILY my favorite song by Tom Petty...
Tom Petty has alot of great songs. R.I.P. Tom Petty.
The hookah pipe smoking character is the caterpillar and is played by Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.
“What a trip man”. Well said Amber. So true. Always loved this one.
Song was inspired by Stevie Nicks and Joe Walsh. Thank you so much for doing this one cause I've been trying to remember which song came from that encounter.
Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics is smoking the hookah. He co-wrote and produced the song.
The Dave Stewart influence on this album is tremendous…
My FAVORITE!!! I always loved the video, even though it creeped me out as a kid, but I'm a huge Alice in Wonderland fan so I thought this video perfectly captured the wacky, surreal, weird, eccentric, and curious vibe of the story of Alice - and this song is so DOPE!!! It's a perfect pairing!!! Other songs to check out: Runnin' Down a Dream, Learning to Fly, Wildflowers, and You Wreck Me!!! Love you guys, keep smiling!! 😎😎😎
This is probably my favorite music video of the 1980s. I loved it as a young child and still love it now. Amber is right, definitely Alice In Wonderland on shrooms/acid.
This song and "Learning To Fly" are my favorite songs from Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers.
Tom Petty is AMAZING!!! So many bangers!! But like Jay said, there's something about this track!! It's my favorite one also!! Mary Jane's Last Dance a close second!!🤘🏻
Have had the luck to see Tom a few times. He is so missed. Wife and I cried when we lost him. I've driven a road trip listening all most only Tom Petty, great fun. Running Down a Dream, banger. Thanks again.
Yep! Running Down a Dream!
I was a child of the 80's and I watched MTV every chance I got. I loved Tom Petty's videos so much, but this is one of my favorites.
The Waiting is my favorite Tom Petty song, but then again you can't go wrong with any of them.
I was always in love with Tom Petty. Major league in LOVE. I cried so hard for weeks after he passed and still tear up. Music will never be the same. We lost one of the greatest artists of our time that day.
It's pretty great watching someone get a fresh take on something I take for granted. The production on this song is top notch.
You've got to react to "Running Down A Dream". Also his early work with the Heartbreakers like "Refugee" "American Girl".
Yep! Running Down a Dream!
I’m going to keep saying it. “The Waiting” is a great song from Petty. A must review
Love this song and video. One of my childhood favorite videos from the MTV days. Tom has an awesome voice and the backup singers were killing it too. Great reaction. ❤️❤️
Ms Stevie Nicks in backing vocals
@@eviekelpie1 Nope. She did do some work with TP and the Heartbreakers, and was the source of the title phrase and inspiration for the song (and was first offered the song before Tom did it, but turned it down), but she doesn't sing on this.
@@keithosmond5730 thx. Always thought she did
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers "YOU GOT LUCKY" is my favorite ever ❤️❤️
"Free Falling" is another awesome Tom Petty song. I sure miss Tom. :(
I miss him too :( A lot of legends are leaving us sadly, I'm guessing you were a teen then?
"Here Comes My Girl", "American Girl" & "Listen To Her Heart" are the best of Tom Petty to me!
RIP Tom, you are the mad hatter.
I love Tom Petty. I took my children to see him in concert on his last tour just a few months before he passed away. It was a real shock when he passed.
He and Dylan were fans of one another and they even toured together at one point in the 80s.
Check out "Learning to Fly," "The Last DJ," "You Got Lucky," "Listen to Her Heart," "The Waiting," "Even the Losers," "Refugee," and "American Girl" plus his other duet with Stevie Nicks, "Insider."
"Insider" is sooooo good! Those harmonies! Love the live performance, as well! I really liked "Fault Lines" from 2014's Hypnotic Eye.....unfortunately, the last Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers album.
When I first saw this video on MTV I was amazed. Great song and visuals. What a trip!
Jay's improving depth of music appreciation is impressive.
He's growing more and more every day. Amber is just naturally receptive to a wide variety of sounds.
So what if his taste doesn't impress you?!?!? I'm giving your comment thumbs down and screw those who gave it thumbs up!!
@@steelionx9255 said nothing about his taste.
Ah yes. The Age of MTV. I remember specifically remembering for the World Premiere of this video on MTV because they ran an ad almost every half hour for a week before they debuted it. So by the time it happened, EVERYBODY tuned in to check it out and yeah...it's weird at first...but if you listen to it a few times, it really sticks in your head. GREAT video!
This was mainly done for MTV, Tom had an album released that wasn't as big as Damn The Torpedos (Southern Accent) and thought this would boost publicity, keep his name up high in the ranks. Plus it looked like it would be fun.
Time to add Tom Petty to that wall behind you! He's the most amazing singer and songwriter ever!
Tom Petty had some of the most memorable videos of the 80s, with this one probably topping the list. This is also my favorite song of his, and if you want to see another great video of his, check out Jamming Me.
A GREAT song that often gets overlooked in his catalog.
I dont remember if you did it yet but another great song of his is RUNNING DOWN A DREAM!!! YOU GUYS WILL LOVE IT!!!
Yep! Running Down a Dream!
Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics wrote the song, inspired by him overhearing Stevie Nicks tell her new ex Joe Walsh, "Don't come around here no more!" which echoed in Stewart's head and inspired Stewart to write the song. Stewart and his producer recruited Petty for the demo to offer the song to Nicks to sing but she wasn't interested. Everyone liked the demo with Petty, so they did it up proper for Petty's Southern Accents album.
I’m older than dirt so I remember when this premiered on MTV. It was an EVENT. They used to hype premieres for big artists and this one was worth all the hype. My brother and I saw this and when it was done, we were like “WTH did we just see?” So NATURALLY every time it was on, we watched to see the little details we missed the first time….
Tom Petty was the best... unique is the word. I was so sad when I learned he died...
I saw Tom Petty in concert twice and this was the final song both times. The theatrical event was awesome.
This video is still brilliant after all these years! I was a kid when this came up, and still love it!
Love the use of sitar.
The arresting visual images in this video are reminiscent of those in the video for "You Might Think" by The Cars. MTV really gave 80s bands a veritable playground for such. And it was awesome, ha. This song actually had to grow on me, but once it did, I loved it. Now it's one of my favorites from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
Love Jay's weird, confused/concerned look at the end when they're "cutting the cake" 😂 Classic!
This has always been my favorite Tom Petty song, I love it!! :)
Listen to Her Heart is a very underrated Tom Petty song. One of my favorites!
When my son was a little kid, and the music video would come up, he'd bust a gut when TP burped.😆
The song was co-written by David Stewart of Eurhythmics, about a one night stand he had with Stevie Nicks, when her ex, Joe Walsh, came back to the house and she told him , "Don't come around here no more,"
Great song and this video was so cool back in the day. This is an entire TRIP. Love the uniqueness of the lyrics and music. It shows a different side to Tom Petty and his brilliance as an artist.
I was at a Tom Petty concert in Atlanta the year the Braves beat the Twins in the world series. He came downstairs from the open sky in his Mad Hatters costume. When he hit the stage and the song ended, he gave the current score and the Braves were ahead. Everybody joined in chanting, don't come around here no more, "to the Twins fans". Awesome.
One great thing about being a Gator fan is at the beginning of the 4th Quarter of a Gator football game hearing 95,000 Gator fans singing I Won't Back Down in tribute to Tom Petty. Tom was a local Gainesville boy and everybody who went to UF in the 70s remembers Tom playing at local bars on weekends. The Saturday after Tom passed away they played "I won't back down" over the PA system and 90,000 fans joined in. It has since became a tradition at Gator games.
I think this is the coolest new tradition in college football, and I'm a Kentucky fan
I’m a Noles guy; but I gotta say that’s really wholesome
That is the only reason to like the Gators 🤷
Love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers! My favorite song is "Breakdown". Give that one a try. I'm sure you're both going to really like it.
Just a massively influential song and video. Tom and his talent are missed, but we will always have this.
I bonded with my son mostly through music. I started taking him to concerts at about 12 I believe. He liked KORN, ROB ZOMBIE, took him to Ozfest several times. We have seen Roger Waters, AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Def Leppard, Poison, Rush, Jethro Tull, Red Hot Chili Pepers, Metalica, Steely Dan, Papa Roach, Journey & many more. Now I'm 68 and he is 38 and him and his wife are taking me to see Greta Van Fleet in March. Great times.
Saw Tom Petty back in the day....what a awesome concert that was!
When MTV actually showed music videos, was fun to see them!
Or the opposite: the person WAS wanted, but so emotionally dangerous, swirling up feelings he's trying to get over. Tom's vocal delivery is amazing: unique tones, textures, and vowel/consonant shapes...
Yeah really... this song was about coming to grips with a finally-ended, probably toxic relationship. Seeing it finally with clear eyes and resolve.
Dig in and you'll find these great nuggets in the goldmine Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers mined in for decades.
YOU GOT LUCKY,
JAMMIN' ME,
WOMAN IN LOVE,
and RUNNING DOWN A DREAM are but a few of valuable sounds and treasure found in the years they were together. It is a shame that Tom is no longer with us, but the sound he and the band deposited in our music collection is priceless. Enjoy
One of my favorites of his and I used to wait for this video to come on MTV. It was such a cool video❤️❤️. Thanks for the great memory!
This song was actually a Stevie nicks song. She asked Tom to help her figure out how to sing it and ended up giving him the song
HANDS DOWN my All Time Favorite Tom Petty Song! with RUNNING DOWN A DREAM a Close Second
Yep! Running Down a Dream!
Tom angel, genious
Love watching how you all have grown and now you speak expertly on music. Kudos.
I have always loved the other-worldly, swirling feel this song embodies. There are so many subtle things going on at the margins, every time I listen I hear something new buried in the mix somewhere.
One of those songs that doesn't sound like anything else. I love these unique vibe tunes. There were quite a few in the 70's, 80's & 90's.
Tom Petty - You Got Lucky - Don't Do Me Like That - American Girl - Refuge (Are a Must Hear)
Ok, I know you guys like music that tells a story, so you have to listen to tom pettys into the great wide open. It's my personal fav and I know you guys will love it. It's right up your alley!
Tom Petty's live version of Break Down is a must!
One of my favorite Tom petty songs. I saw this pop up in my notifications and I had to come see this video 100%.
RIP TOM PETTY!!! WE MISS YOU!!! THANKS FOR THE MUSIC!!! 👍😃❣️😃👍
You can't go wrong with Tom Petty. One of my favorite musicians.
"Dont Come Around HereNo More" was inspired by Tom Pett6y visiting Stevie Nicks and her telling her then boyfriend, Don Henley, "Dont come around here no more"! That was the inspiration for this song.
If you like this you must try Last Dance with Mary Jane or You Don't Know How I Feel. Both must be seen with the video for full impact. Tom had many friends in the industry and was a great collaborator. Shocked when we lost him and he is missed.
Please do Tom's "Running Down A Dream"! Classic riff and guitar solo.🎸🎶
Yep! Running Down a Dream!
I absolutely LOVE this song. I was a kid the first time I heard this song and I didn't know that it was about his addiction but I love the song. It struck me because I was thinking about my stepmother that my father ill-advisedly married.
I also love Free Fallin, Refugee, You Got Lucky, so many more.
It really had nothing to do with his addiction and was written for Stevie Nicks. Look up interviews and even Wikipedia about the song. It was based on one statement as she dumped her boyfriend Joe Walsh as she was heard by the co-writer “don’t come around here no more” as she kicks him out.
This video won the very first MTV Video Music Award for special effects even though it had no special effects.
Two women involved in this song are legends! Check out Stevie Nicks "Has Anyone Ever written anything for you" and Annie Lennox "Cold" for Female Friday 🔥❤️
OMG...this song put such a Spell me. I just Love Love Love this Song..
"Running down a dream" is a banger!
Yep! Running Down a Dream!
Oh man! Can't go wrong with Tom Petty! Great artist! You got lucky and refugee are my favorite songs!
This song was written by Dave Stewart from the Eurythemics (Sweet Dreams are made of this) for Stevie Nicks, but she didn't want it, and suggested Tom.
Dave is the Chesire Cat in the video.
Those back round singers made it even more amazing!
This was my go to song about my physically abusive step-father when I was a kid.
It spoke for me when I didn't have a voice.
I still tear up all these decades later when I hear it.
WOE IS ME!
LOL!
❤
65 degrees in south Florida. A bit chilly 😂haha.
Tom petty was of the coolest people ever, he was all about the music, he rarely did interviews.
This video and this song...I'm not a Tom Petty fan, can take him or lose him, but this song gets cranked every time.
Jay don't worry about the movie/s Alice in Wonderland, check out the book. Written very strangely but that's because Carroll had secret meanings for a lot of what he wrote in there.
GOD....I want my MTV back!!! Miss those good ole days of watching videos all day and jammin out to all these great songs!!! Forget Saturday morning cartoons.....when we hit our teenage years it was MTV all day long.
This was released during the height of New Wave and Tom Petty hated they had to change their rock sound to stay current during that time period. I still think this era of music from them was fantastic.
If Tom said that, he must have been paranoid. Maybe, it was just his label. The height of New Wave was around 1981, and this song came out in 1985. The Power Station and John Mellencamp, were topping the charts, and the last big wave was the New Romantic Movement, which reached it's peak with Duran Duran's Arena, in 1984. From 1985 until about 1991, the airwaves were dominated by pop and hair metal. Prince, Madonna, Tears for Fears, Level 42, Van Halen, Bon Jovi and Mellencamp. Stuff like that. Tom fit right in. His record label must have been ignorant.
@@jimiewilliams7623 New Wave peaked in 83 and Tom did say that in a 90's interview. He explained synthesizer New Wave music was so predominate during that time that they had to adapt their sound to stay current, but it didn't last long so they were able to shift back to their conventional sound.
This was always a great jam live! Miss Tom so much.
I liked Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland. Ya'll should react to it.
I'd forgotten all about this song, and I love it. Thank you for bringing back memories!
