I didn't know anyone was left in the world that didn't know this song? The fact that you said it sounds like a rock classic is actually great praise to Tom Petty as a song writer. I don't remember when I first heard it, but I do remember that I liked it from the start.

Tom Petty's whole career is a testament to his song writing. While most bands have to change their style with the times, he made a 40 year career out of rock and roll. Only other band I can think of that did that was The Rolling Stones. It was clearly due to Tom's excellent writing.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers were a great American rock band formed in 1976. They had a lot of great hits such as "Refugee", "Runnin' Down A Dream", "The Waiting", "Learning To Fly", "American Girl", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Don't Do Me Like That", "You Got Lucky", "Change Of Heart", "I Need To Know", "Listen To Her Heart" etc. In 1989 Petty went solo & had quite a few hits such as "I Won't Back Down", "Free Fallin'", "A Face In The Crowd", "Yer So Bad etc. He was also part of the supergroup "Travelling Willburys" in 1988.

So glad you picked this "Earlier live performance" with Howie playing bass and singing harmony with Tom (Tom loved Howie's singing voice). I saw "The Who" in Denver about a year & a half ago. They had Mike Campbell (Tom Petty's lead guitarist) and his band as the opening act. He played a number of songs and then did a couple Tom Petty songs. During the second one he walked to the side of the stage in tears. He missed Tom so much. The band just sort of filled in for him. My son & I both cried a bit.

Every great Tom Petty song has a deep sadness behind it. He's a bad boy who isn't sorry he broke her heart, and he's... free... but... free falling. The guitar progression jst hangs in the air, weightless. If you want another song with the same feel, listen to "Mary Jane's Last Dance." Just achingly beautiful.

I was on holiday in Gran Canaria in 1989 (I think) and i heard a song in a bar "Running Down A Dream" and I loved it and had to ask the DJ who was singing it and he showed me the Full Moon Fever album, Tom Petty. I bought it as soon as I got home and loved it. Free Fallin was just one of the classics on that album. RIP Tom!

He's from Gainesville, FL. My high school American history & economics teacher, Rick Rucker, was in a band with Tom Petty when they were in high school. After high school Me. Rucker went to college & Tom went to L.A. . Tom Petty never forgot where he came from. Whenever in Florida the 2 of them would get together. I can remember pictures of them together in our Vanguard High yearbook

Tom Petty grew up in Gainesville Florida home of the Gators. To this day at all University of Florida Home games they play Tom's song 'xI Won't Back Down'. And about the tree, Tom at one time worked as a groundskeeper at UF and allegedly planted a tree though he claims that wasn't where he planted his tree, with a wink.

Free Falling is of my favorites of his, along with Refugee, which you should definitely check out! I have always strongly identified with this song, in a way that is very close to the literal meaning but slightly different. There is that feeling that you get when a relationship that was so good for so long ultimately goes wrong for whatever reasons, and it finally ends, mostly driven by one party or the other, or both together.
For me, there is a heartache and a wistfulness in the idea of suddenly being in free fall the way it comes off in the chorus. But simultaneously it gives this feeling of liberation. You are at once sad and know you're going to miss this person terribly, but there is also a sense of relief and that your life is opening up once again to go do new things and grow as a person.

Celebrity deaths don't usually get to me. But when Tom Petty died, I mourned him like I would a friend. His music has been on every playlist I've ever made just as it was on every mix tape I ever recorded off of the radio back in the 80s! The only death that hit me as hard was Prince. 💔
You should really do the official videos though. He had some VERY unique visuals. My favorite was " Mary Jane's last Dance" VERY dark yet funny video starring actress Michelle Pfeiffer.❤

Many years ago, I was studying voice with the great vocal maestro Ron Anderson, who taught Axl Rose, Cris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Kiss, Steve Perry and just about everyone else in rock and pop music. I had just followed Axl into Ron's studio for a lesson that day. Ron said "Axl is singing this new Tom Petty song with Tom tonight, and it's really weird...something about vampires on Ventura Boulevard." I think that was either at the American Music Awards or Grammys, but in any case, Axl and Tom killed it that night...and rock history was made...you are correct young lady, a rock classic.

That was the MTV Video Music Awards in 1989 (or maybe 90). I remember it well as I was about 11 at the time and I was super excited for the final act of the VMAs. I was quickly disappointed then when Tom Petty was announced and he began playing Free Fallin'. I didn't know that song that well then and certainly didn't appreciate the music as I do now. But then Axl Rose starts strutting out and singing it like it's a Guns N' Roses song and I completely lost it.
I still love that version of this song, but I also really love the original too.

Tom and I share a birthday, one year apart and he’s always been one of my favorites. Back in 2017, my daughter who is a huge Stevie Nicks fan, and her boyfriend who is a huge Tom Petty fan, saw that they were both playing a concert in London in July of that year. They decided to get tickets and plan a week-long London vacation around it. They said it was absolutely the best show they had seen. Less than 3 months later Tom passed away and they are forever grateful that they made that trip. Check out Yer So Bad (the official video) some time. It’s very Wilburyesque, and one of the most humorous music videos you will ever watch.

Saw him in the late 90s and it was so smoky in the stadium that you could barely see the stage and when Last Dance With Mary Jane started, I've never seen so many people light a joint at the same time before

Just came across this video and subscribed. Hope you react to more Tom Petty! Also I'm so glad you picked this particular performance. Way back in the early '90s this concert was on late night TV, and I had set my VCR to record it (yes, that old). I became obsessed with it and Tom's music so every time I see clips from it, I just get nostalgic.

Love your exuberance while you are listening to 'new music to you'. As a child of the 60s I wish that I could re-capture that again. Don't get me wrong, there are people making really great music now. Keep on enjoying!! Thanks for this reaction video. Peace.
Britt, a little edit here. I came back when I saw you have not reviewed the late 1970s band 'Heart'. Please give a listen/look at their song 'Barracuda' performed live. Here is the RUclips title search: Heart - "Barracuda" (1977)

My girl, Britt... This is a song about a boy meeting a girl and maybe he got a phone number or maybe a day to meet. This is all about the celebration of human connection. Like when you ask the girl out and she just straight says yes! Now I'm freeeeeeee... freeeee-fallin! It's the greatest of feelings when you approach a girl (or someone you love -- I don't want to be attached to the gay haters) and they see in you what you saw in them. It's fantastic. You feel like you're free... free fallin'. Just my take on a classic.
