FWIW, I made the mistake of buying both the Leica grip and the Leica thumb support. I find the thumb support alone works great, without adding bulk or the complication of accessing battery and SD card. (Also, the Q2M grip is better than the Q3 grip because the release is quicker.)

That grip looks so premium and comfortable to hold. I have a generic grip on my Q2 from Amazon and it feels so cheap and out of place on the Q2. Great video as always Alex.

I love RRS gear, too, but I wish they had a modular option so I could get just the base plate and grip.
I was seriously considering to get this smallrig grip... wow, luckily I came across this video. Which designer/team actually thought that using that brass colour actually matches the Q3?

Thanks for such a helpful and detailed review, Alex. I was just about to hit "Place your order" on Amazon, and figured I'd see if there were any reviews. Now that I see that it's not just plain black I'm reconsidering. (Color wasn't so obvious difference wasn't as obvious to me from the product photos.) I love the look and feel of the Leica M11 grip and I wish they'd just do one exactly like for the Q3!
I think I'm gonna hold out for the new Helium Design Labs He3 grip, which is really pricey, but ticks a ton of boxes.

Agree with you on small rig grips being the best. I got those q3 grip last week and echo the same things. The grip is beefy, almost too big… but I can’t get why they didn’t match the top plate color. It’s nearly perfect but that’s such a let down. I’m keeping mine for now but also use the jjc grip which is significantly smaller but nice in its own right.
I definitely won’t buy this grip for my Q3 because I want it to be entirely black. With the Smallrig grip attached your camera looks somewhat like a ‘my first Sony’ kit to me. So I either need the original Leica grip or even shop for the metal grip from JJC. Thanks for showing it to us though!
I prefer IDS. It is less bulky.
Alex, following your recommendation I ordered the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for my Q3. I have been unable to attach it to camera. Do the Leica key-rings need to be removed? In your video you are using the loops rather than key-rings.
The grip goes over the Leica key ring.
@@ABarrera Must you remove the strap and the rings, then affix the grip and then reattach the rings and the strap? Wish the manufacturer supplied illustrations.

How does the Smallrig grip compare with the IDS grip that was your previous best Q3 grip. The Smallrig looks substantially bigger & bulkier.
The smallrig is bigger by a lot, and provides a beefier grip. The IDS is still a great option if you want something small.

I am puzzled by the criticism of titanium finish of the grip, while using a loud silver lens hood and thumb grip on a black camera. Just can't understand the logic. Surely, you should ask for a titanium finish hood and thumb grip from Leica ?
I don’t have the brass or silver accessories and the titanium on the smallrig grip still really annoys me
