Great tips on a great camera. Excellent demonstration on the simple use of shooting wide open. It’s such a simple truth and one of the many things that set Leica apart from nearly everyone else.
Hola Thorsten, Im looking for a lightweight camera to take to some remote parts of Alaska to shoot walruses & whales. I assume that I’ll have to crop quite a few of my photos to get those close-ups, and I’m concerned that I’ll lose some of the sharpness. Would you recommend the Q3 for wilderness photography? Thank you
I would recommend it because it is easy to carry. As for sharpness, you can in fact crop to 75mm and 90mm and have razor sharp pictures. The lens was designed for it.
hey thorsten... you dont have to start each of your video introducing yourself man... your fan specially me, are well aware of who you are, and plus it sounds funny man... one thing i always say.. you are the main reason why i love leica camera!
Great video thanks, I have just took the plunge and ordered the Q3, will get it tomorrow, can't wait. Thank you for the presets and keep up the good work.
Outstanding. Just got my Q3. Have been using the Leica LUX app on my iphone 15 pro max, which I will always have on me, but I'm in my learning curve for now. Great video, and thank you Thorston.
Great video my biggest issue with the Q3 is the focusing. I’m coming from a Sony focussing so I’m struggling to get proper focus was wondering if you have some tips on focus settings for moving subjects to keep them in focus
I read your book on composition and it really gave me an appreciation for black and white photography. I never dreamed I would want to create black and white photos. I enjoyed everything else in your book too. Now I just need to learn how to use light (soft light) for capturing images. I really need help in that department.
Okay, I tried the Q3... but it's not for me. What I want when I photograph is to compose my picture at capture, not by cropping afterwards. So I need a compact with Zoom AND excellent lens quality (as good as the sum micron 28mm f1,7 ??). What would you recommend?
I don't really have any recommendation. Recently Layla wanted a color zoom camera, and where do you find one that is simple and compact. I am still looking 🙂
Excellent education. I just took up photography as a retirement hobby. I learn so much from your videos. Thank you for taking the time to make them. A Leica, particularly the Q3, is my dream camera. Unfortunately they are a little out of my reach on a retirement income at the moment. Will save my extra dollars and save for one in the future.
i love your photos. stunning visual par excellence. I know i won't be able to get the same results if i get the Leica even if i have been shooting for some time. Respect to you, master. Will follow for your inspiration.
A 1.7 m43 lenses hast the picture impression of a 3.4 lens for full frame. If you want a similar look, like the Q3 with 1.7, you need a 0.85 lens - which not exist.
@@KeAiFu ? - I think you are referring to depth of field equivalence? Quality of the bokeh is more important than the amount imo. M43 is more than capable of shallow depth of field with the right lenses. And let’s be honest, shallow depth of field is overplayed, every newby photographer shoots everything wide open. It’s a little fatiguing tbh.
Yes, they designed it for size of camera, versatility, and with the vision that you can crop the image. One day, maybe, a 50mm or 35mm version will come.
Two reasons probably: first it was easier to design 28mm optics f1.4 for this size and quality in a compact camera. Second is the fact that you can easily crop for 35mm and still get away with more than enough resolution for large prints because the lens is of such high quality
"c'est moins chirurgical et plus naturel" 😍 (Leica Q3 it's less surgical and more natural). Je suis d'accord, et c'est vrai que Sony est TRÈS doué en matière d'autofocus. Tout le monde dans l’industrie de la photo les envie et essaie de comprendre COMMENT ils le font.
First thing to know that sensor size does not have anything ro do with sensor size. It is one of the first statements in this video which is inacurate.
I like it when he uses the term "the Leica look". There is no such thing. You can't tell from a photo online, in the newspaper or in a magazine which camera the photo was shot with. 😉
People pick brands for their tech and hybrid functions, shoot specifically to maximize dynamic range in post, use super clinical glass, twiddle sliders in Lightroom for hours, etc. Then hop in the comments after looking at a lo-res photo compressed by social media on their cellphone and say there's no "Leica look." Brilliant.
Not quite true, different brands have different looks. Regarding color, sharpness and tone. I was a Master Printer back in the film days and I most definitely could see a difference between Leica, Hasselblad, Nikon, Canon and Pentax. Now, it’s all based on sensors and pixels but each company still tweaks their sensors to achieve their “look”. If you can’t see this then, maybe you should stick to using your cellphone. 😊
Actually, pretty much 80% of all reviewers mentioned the Leica look because the camera itself is not really what does it it’s the lens. The lens is incredible. I’ve had a lot more time to spend with it now and I totally see the difference between this and my old Sony stuff. .

Great video, I have a Sony A7IV and all of its best lenses up to 20K gear, but my Leica Q3 never leaves my sight, I go everywhere with it. I love it.
Hi Thorsten, what hood are you using for the Q3? I love how it makes it stand perfectly

Half the Q3 users use manual focus. Try it, I like the certainty and planning that goes into that. As fast as Auto Focus once you get it.
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard that’s what I’ve been liking about. This thing is the auto focus, but I’m getting there with manual slowly.
How cool, I've never tested the "finger aperture blades" trick before, it works!
Excellent explanation.
An insight into creativity and how to control your art!
Thank you Thorsten.
I love my Q2 Monochrom!
Any tips for keeping multiple people in focus if they are slightly off the same plane ? Is the key smaller aperture ?
I am still waiting for the Q3 test sample files on your website!
Will check, they have be updated now.
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard thanks!
Thanks Thorsten! I am always learning new things about my Q! 📷

Strålende video, som altid, Thorsten. Der mangler audio fra 10:08 til 10:50?
Ja, det er en nu ting, billeder som eksempler. Men du har ret, det kan opfattest som at lyden mangler.

hoping Leica will come with a Q3 Monochrom soon
They will, but it will take be while 🙂
has anybody figured out how to set the camera up that AE is not locked via shutterbutton half press while using AF/S mode ( p.117 Q3 manual )
Hi, I guess much of what you expressed about Q3 holds true for Q2 as well....
Yes, all you can do with Leica Q3 you can do with Leica Q2 and the original Leica Q from 2015.
Would you agree that 50 mm is closer to reality for portraits than 28 mm?
The Panasonic Leica 15mm f1.7 is a brilliant alternative for M43, for those of us budget conscious!
