Thorsten : My man ... do not drop lovely camera .... I am Rollie and Leica film fan , the Monochrome in M11 / or Q 2-3 is a body ( tool ) of light I have used for for it's clear deep contrast and crisp reproduction and interpretation , of Light. I thank you for all of the years , of sharing knowledge and light , with me. Christophe
In my case I transitioned from M series cameras to the Q2M. Due to nerve damage in my left land, manual focusing became too much of a challenge and I was missing too many shots. Zone focusing is not something that resonates with me especially after such a heavy investment in Leica glass. My last M camera was the M9 Monochrom, but after getting the Q2M, I decided to let it go. I sold it. The Q2M has become my primary camera, and I love the rich tones I get from it. For all other photography that might require different focal length lenses, I use a Sony A7RIII. Down the road an SL series camera may be in the cards but thus far the bulky size has been a deterrent for me.
Wilfred : your thoughts are salient and true , I also at my age , have issues carrying " weight " in gear , and at 63 years find solid reliable investments ...the best tools for light capture.
I use my Q2 for event video and photography. absolutely enough and so versatile. Even the internal mic records usable audio. Sold a lot of cameras and lenses I used before for events before. the Q2 is amazing if you want to work lite, focus on story and want to interact with people.
Hello Thorsten, I just found your YT channel and I love watching you videos even though I don’t own nor have the funds for a Leica camera. I have something similar though. I have the new Fuji X-100 VI. I suspect Fuji copied the Leica Q2 concept except in an APS-C format; a fixed 35mm f2 full frame equivalent, 40mpx with all the Fuji film simulations including several mono sims. Understandably it doesn’t have the f1.7 full frame bokeh though. I have recently acquired an interest in architectural photography so shooting in mono (JPEG) is excellent In eliminating the distractions of colour. The RAW files in the computer however are in colour which can be superb in low evening light; almost mono. Keep up the excellent videos. Best wishes from UK.
I got my first Leica, the Q2M, last summer. People soon told I’d be getting another Leica soon. Now I have an MP black paint. It’s true. It’s a gateway drug.
I don't own any Leica but love hearing you speak. you are very knowledgable about photography. I have tried the Sl2 and S and both are really a joy to use. I have an assistant that loves Leica to death. Great cameras.
I had the M6 in the film days, then Q-P, M10-P, M9, M240, Q2M, M10-D, M10M, and SL2, in that order. All for my 20 M lenses. Just bought your ventilated shade for my 50 mm Summilux black chrome.
If only I had the funds for one of these 😣 I do, however, set my Sony to B+W mode when shooting street - I try to view the light as much as my subject and colour can be a distraction in that respect. I should add, I don’t always leave the images in B+W during the edit but I know my light/contrast comes out better regardless.
I have the SL2 with several lenses. I would love an SL2 in black and white so I could use the same lenses. I have the first Q so I know what its advantages are. Do you know if Leica will come out with a black and white version of te SL2 or SL2-s?
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard because I’ve had a Q2M for a month and naturally have watched all Q2M videos, and my guy Thorsten hadn’t talked about this camera yet and so I was patiently waiting! 🤙🏼
Interesting advice to have it in aperture priority and just use iso 200 or 3200. But why not auto iso? This camera is an iso monster, so at least you can protect your shutter speeds (for those with trembling hands). Thanks for your video!
For me, AUTO iso introduces unwanted changes to y settings. You can use AUTO iso, and many does, but then you have to be able to adjust exposure with he thumb wheel. (What I do is set ISO and aperture, and then I only have to deal with shutter speed to get the exposure I want).
I wish the review focused more on the key selling point of this camera - the black and white sensor and how does it set it apart from colour cameras in terms of the output image. Enthusiast cameras shoot B&W too and can be as simple or complex as you want them to be.
I'm not sure if I missed something but I was looking to see whether the *quality* of the B&W images out of a Monochrom are better in some way. All I heard was that it is easier. Could you mention something about the quality of the output, as I'd rather get a regular Q2 and just convert to black and white in Post Processing if there is no *quality advantage* with the Monochrom.
Q2 Monochrom has no Bayer filter (the RGB filter in front of the photo receptors) so it accepts about 1 stop more light and has better low-light capabilities. You will not be able to change the "mix" of RGB that goes into the final B&W output like you can in post production with the regular Q2 though.
Wow.. What a great timing for me.. It was just last night that I saw a mint used condition q2m for $4000. I've been looking to get a new camera and is about to buy canon r6 with L lens. I'm actually partially colorblind. Often when I edited my raw pictures, my wife would say that the color look awful. I was really sad but there's nothing I could do. So I used a fuji camera at one point just so that I can apply their FILM SIMULATION, and never edit. In the end though I feel no connection to the camera and sold it. I've owned leica m240 with 50 summicron and 28 summicron but I sold it again due to my family and my wife family demanded a quick turnaround photos to be shared to social media when we have a family events. And with leica m I have to edit first from DNG and often the colors isn't satisfactory for some. I feel like the leica q2m will satisfy me a lot. Removing all the burden and distractions of colors. However, I feel selfish if I shoot in B&W since no one but me can appreciate monochrom. Even my wife said to me that she preferred color since she grew up in B&W film era and it reminded her of her young and tough days growing up. So should I be selfish? Or should I be a people pleaser..? I wish I'm not in this position.. Btw, how much uniqueness will I lose out if I choose to buy leica q2 and make it monochrom rather than buying leica q2 monochrom? Cheers for great and informative video again Thorsten 🙏🙏
Hi Thorsten, Thanks for all the great videos. I'm researching my first Leica camera. I'm looking at the Q2 or M9. You say that if one buys the Q2, they'll be dreaming about the M camera or switch to it before long. Would this be the case for the M9? If I were to buy the Q2 and then wanted to upgrade, would it be worth looking at the M9 or should I look at the M10 or M11? Are you talking about the creative potential of the M series or technical or both? Because the Q2 seems like a camera that one can use professionally (I'm not a professional yet), and very creatively for a long time and get as much out of as any of the M series cameras...Please could you be more specific on why I'd be wanting to jump to an M? Thank you.
I don’t think b&w is better, but I can understand why pro photographers in the past preferred using it. Developing your own film and creating your own prints gives you more control over the end product. I liked how I could use my hands to selectively lighten and darken different areas on the print under the enlarger.
I wish Leica make some other focal length Q series (especially monochrom but not only). I wish for a 40/50mm with crop at 75 and 90. That would be perfect for me. Otherwise, I'd love a L mount monochrom SL.
It's likely they will. It has to be fixed lens because it's leaf shutter. People often dream of a Leica Q with interchangeable lenses, but that would require a shutter. But I would think they would one day make a 35mm or 50mm Leica Q, maybe both. We'll see.
@@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard A Leica Q with interchangeable lenses make no real sense yes. Leica has the SL and CL for that... I will prefer a full frame camera in a CL size body (with stacked sensor, so no need for a mechanical shutter) and L mount of course.
@@artmaltman In Leica M the rangefinder focusing has an overlapping image to match with the full frame. In manual focusing with the Q2 Monochrom, the EVF zooms into the image so you can see the detail and see when is is crisp and in focus. You can also add red outline that shows the sharp edges (but I avoid this as the red outline covers the details you would else focus till are crisp and clear; I prefer to use my eyes to see when it is in focus, rather than having an red outline tell me when it is in focus).

They need to have a round viewfinder on there like an M or SL. The EVF is too large and gets scratched and damaged too easy
Not a bad idea.
How does lack of phase detection autofocus affect you as a Leica owner?
Not at all, really. Half of Leica Q users set it to manual focus also.
