  • Thanks for checking out this latest review featuring American Gardens Clay and Amity Texture Spray from Shear Revival! For those that want a little background: Amity is the company’s Prestyler texture spray offering a light hold and matte finish. It’s also infused with Kaolin clay for more texture.
American Gardens, once a vegan oil-based Pomade, returns as a proper aloe/water-based texture clay. This is the strongest, most matte, and driest product in the line.

    American Gardens Product Comparisons:
Shear Revival Northern Lights Matte Paste: Ah, the inevitable question, "What makes American Gardens different from Northern Lights?". American Gardens: Strong hold, dry, tons of texture, and gritty finish. Northern Lights: Medium to firm hold, not as dry, less-gritty texture, and can be used for neat or loose hairstyles.
O'Douds Dry Wax: Another popular comparison request. Dry Wax: Strong hold, natural (not matte) finish, meant for loose or neat hairstyles, piecy yet smooth texture. American Gardens: Similar level of hold, proper matte finish, grittier texture, more volume, and less versatile.
Root and Muddle Matte Clay: Similar hold strength, but Root and Muddle has a much smoother consistency, is easier to apply, and is a bit stronger than American Gardens. It also has a smoother, less gritty finish as well.

I love shear revival. But this is the first product that disappointed me. It is SO dry. And it felt like weak hold and control. But all there other products are amazing.

So this is dryer than grey ghost, because I personally think grey ghost is difficult to apply to my hair.

So Matt from TDM style mentioned in his review that the directions on American Gardens actually specifies that it should be used like a prestyler, in towel dried or damp hair! What do you think about that?

Faraz Rahman it really doesn’t matter. It works just fine the way I used it.
