I've seen a few people question the use of the term " Woke. " To be woke means to be alert to injustice in society. These "Saint's" make a huge speech on the roof about poor paying jobs, managers, and general "injustices" for their generation. So I feel that It's very much an accurate use of the word. I don't agree that it's disingenuous or ignorant. I actually think the term has taken on a life of its own, and people have many different understandings of the term. This isn't a political stance, the term "woke" is being used to describe the characters and writing. They seem focused on pandering to a specific group or type of younger people. The type that doesn't wear a shirt 24/7 yet has headphones around the neck at all times- spitting out quirky dialogue that's pretty bland and hipster-esk. As someone in the comments said: This whole game feels like the embodiment of "pat yourself on the back" and "participation trophies".

I get that its shit, dont get me wrong, but 3 was bearable. 4 was just awful and they seem to slide off a cliff of quality after that, at least those had competent game design back then, even if they were awful. Volition sucks.
You seem to be a millennial complaining about millennials, which newsflash, isn't restricted to millennials, it's generational.
Because parents, and their parents believed that fearing a non-existent god and that "hard work" means "being beaten for doing absolutely nothing wrong", and everything that should be seen as "bad" good and vice versa. I mean, is it bad that civil rights happened? The Bible/Torah/Quran says so, even if they'll change the words to those books to make it "more accessible". We just need to understand that our morality, ethics, beliefs will die with us, unless you indoctrinate people, which is proven to be illegal for governments, cults, but not the "religions", "schools", "workplaces", or "news networks".
It's not even just bad for the Saints Row franchise, this game failing has probably proved to Rockstar that they can do whatever they want with GTA because there isn't really any competition

@@lgk9589 It was just cringy to me, seems like they're trying to target college-aged people, but don't have any on the team; any jokes they make come off as weird and unnatural when they try to be relatable. That's at least how it came off to me, I just hated a lot of the dialogue.

What sucks is that a “millennial power fantasy” kinda worked in Watch Dogs 2. But that’s because WD2 doesn’t pretend that the characters are hard edge badass gangsters and instead portrays them as… well millennial kids that fight dudes with bad memes and goofy humor.
It fits because the game realizes that you can have relatable characters but you have put effort into making them realistic and likable.
It was 2016 back then, Watch Dogs 2 is 100 times better and less cringe moments than the Saints Woke Reboot
Also it took place in San Francisco so the millenial goofiness was to be expected
Watchdogs 2 was great as the characters were interesting and they were "good guys" trying to make the world a better place. I played the game in stealth mode and tried not to kill anyone. It seemed to fit with the main character and his dialogue. The new Saints Row writing is like oil and water. They wanted characters you could like and relate to. So the gang are "good guys" that take toys to the orphanage and complain about worker exploitation. And then they are killing countless "good guy" policemen and women and innocent Marshall security workers. It is totally jarring and stops any kind of realism or immersion into the story. It's not a drama story, not a comedy, not a parody of popular movies, it is just a total bland mess. A 10 year old could write a more interesting, convincing and immersive story.

Watchdogs 2 was trash. This only highlights how far people’s standards have fallen that it’s considered a good game by anyone even though I’m pretty sure you’re in the minority.
This just makes me miss older open world games like Sleeping Dogs and Saints Row 2 even more. I feel like the subgenre of open-world crime games is fucking dead.

I feel like this game is not written by decent writers, but just the devs themselves who just so happen to be politically correct, chronically online and socially inept nerds who need to touch grass.
A real far cry from Rockstar getting advice from actual gangbangers.
Because most likely the writers have the same personality as the characters they wrote and probably live in an echo chamber so no one will tell them their writing sucks.
The weird thing is that, I don't even think it's millennial or gen Z. To quote Yahtzee, they gentrified gangster culture. They turned it into hustle culture but we use guns. Part of the insanity of old Saints is that they are unashamedly gangbangers, even after all is said and done.
And speaking of that, I'd prefer that the series ended with SR4. Cos at that point, there was nowhere left to go. Certainly not in terms of stakes. And it felt like a celebration of the series, with shedloads of fanservice, using its premise to do shit that it wouldn't be able to in earlier games.
My point is, Saints Row '22 is unnecessary. It feels more like Embracer or THQ Nordic or whoever owns the license saw money on the table and wanted to market the game to people like me (I'm technically Gen Z). Except it failed on all fronts. Like, this is a game I'm gonna see on plenty of Worst Of lists, without any caveats.
Yeah it turns out to be a skin deep lip service of various cultures.
That's is kinda the issue with the franchise, being further and further from straight gangster culture into a pop culture melting pot.
But at least 3/4/GoH is still have some meat on them, while the reboot just go "ha ha student loan let's kill these whacky archetypes" and not elaborate on it.
@RiverDream It's not so much that there are no good writers. It's that good writers know when a story should end. Bad writers keep going into perpetuity.
There is demand for a classic style Saints Row game. It was a good time for a reboot, it just needed good direction and sense of vision. Getting back to the basics with a fleshed out world, open ended story, well written characters and in depth customization.
Put virtually any fan of the first three games in charge of determining the vision of SR 2022, and we wouldve almost certainly gotten a better title.

GTA 4 was dark, grounded yet a parody on American Culture and Mafia while SR2 was a serious gang story with lot of goofy stuff to do in fictional city.. SR and GTA could have been DC and Marvel for Crime games.. But journalists and some people couldn't stop themselves from whining about SR being a GTA rip-off.. That's why they changed the direction of the game in SRTT, not because they couldn't compete..

I agree with the points you said in this video. Honestly, most games in this day and age are like cash grabs and only for money making. I can’t give these big companies any excuses, since they are the most experienced in the whole gaming industry.
It’s always these games that make me say that the 6 to Early 8th generations of gaming was better.
Back in the day, games were made to generate revenue too. The difference is the games had to actually be GOOD to sell. There's a reason why San Andreas is the best selling game on the PS2 and still has the most content of any GTA game made. 20 years later and the developers expect the game to sell based on name recognition alone with no attention paid to quality.

It's felt so fresh and to have finally a game without any major problems.
Once consoles got well established internet connectivity, about the time the ps3 came out and made the Xbox 360 get a huge online overhaul on its home screen, that's when gaming really started to fall apart.
The main problem I have is how much potential it had storywise. There could have been a really compelling story about college age people forced into crime to get by, and deciding to become part time gangsters. They could start out the game as these hipster gen z types, but actually make a point with that. Have something big happen (bigger that crashing Neena’s dumbass car) and have them realize what they’ve really gotten into. Then they drop that shit and become actual Saints.
I figured that by the end you'd be somehow betrayed by your friends because they figured you became too dangerous, and you had the chance to kill them. It'd change the main character from a hipster gen z to a cold, ruthless crime boss that doesn't keep friends, only subordinates. That'd been a story I'd have enjoyed instead.
No they couldn’t. That storyline doesn’t work in any universe except a Pixar movie for kids.

Loved the original and the prequel, Before The Storm, but 2 got way too woke. The plot itself was horrendous with the game starting with a cop pulling a gun on two teens fist fighting and the father of one kid gets gunned down for calmly talking the cop down. The kids runaway on a journey to Mexico to escape bad America. Absolutely baffling

The devs really said society has a different feeling about the gang and hip hop culture so they took this direction. Like gang and hip hop culture is having a popularity boom its mainstream! The bling bling rap and gritty hard-core gang shit would thrive now more than it did in 2006-2008 because people love that shit.

Especially the southwestern location could've really amped that up with desert shootouts, use Marshall to interfere with drug activities and truly being a militia for hire and have the corruption element there, hell even adding conflicts with gangs and police. They could've added an activity to have crooked cops on the side of the saints a reversed fuzz scenario. The ball was dropped severely because they wanted to pander to people that can't handle some criticism. Look at their community manager they are catering to that type of person and volition is filled with uncreative sheep.

"spinning opp blocks", or "hitting licks", or handle having to "beat a charge" every now and then. it'd probably look a lot like GTA 5 but with everything looking a bit more modern. but it would have been better than whatever this was.

This game is ironically the same thing that Saints Row 2 was being critical of. You had a villain that consisted of a evil corporation that was trying to gentrify Stilwater and this game basically looks like the result of that gentrification process by Ultor
The weapon wheel not slowing down time or stopping gameplay is intentional. This was a feature in Saints Row 1, 2 and The Third. In Saint’s Row 4, older fans didn’t like how the wheel stopped gameplay, so I imagine volition made it not affect gameplay to correct that complaint
Yeah some of his gameplay complaints are stupid. He prefers yee yee ass cover systems over crouching, says melee combat is worse but forgets how garbage it was in GTA V, and ammo scarcity is a bad thing?
This is also something he said that I don’t agree with. The weapon wheel never stopped time, and it doesn’t even in GTA online, so that’s a total non issue. There’s way better complaints to make.

Yes GTA V have pretty basic mele combat, but at the same time the game actually gives you an option to deck, block, kick, punch. It's not garbage, just basic. And in the saints row mele is just one button... and you can just hold it to kill enemy... Because for some reason devs hate smashing one button for few times to perform attacks.

People contribute SR2 as "Lightning in a bottle" but I see it as a two visions working in harmony. The Boss is VERY serious when it comes to building the Saints up as the strongest gang in Stillwater but is able to let his/her hair down to do random acts around the city. So, you get this combination of badass when it comes to business but jokester when it comes to play. The writing really helps with that because the Boss doesn't play around with his/her lieutenants (Carlos, Pierce, Shaundi) while their talking about how to bring other gangs down but will do an odd job with a sense of levity while trying to build their respect.
Plus instead of Letting Carlos suffer, he sacrifice him to exact revenge on Brotherhood.
I would've loved a Remake of SR1 that added activities and mechanics from SR2 and TT (while maintaining SR1 mechanics) with updated graphics still faithfully following the 90-00s aesthetic, gleaming bling, and ill-fitting clothing. A time capsule of Wu-tang Clan, spinner rims, sagging pants and side ways pistols.
Even though holding your gun sideways ruins your aim.

Hey Dark Space, if you want to check out a game with great driving physics you should check out Enthusia Professional Racing. It's a racing game that was published by Konami on the PS2. It's quite the hidden gem.
I can't even forgive some of the 'buggy' mechanics in this game.
When they did happen (rarely) in the previous games such as SR2 / SR3, it was often pretty funny.
Make that aspect consistent, along with a brand new floppy story, annoying characters, and irritating writing, and you have a recipe for disaster... 😪

Saints row has always been my favorite gaming series of all time, 1st game in the series - 4th game, now seeing this it did an absolute 180 and completely tarnished what once was to me. This gave me real depression.
This really is heartbreaking considering the OG team that made the original Saints Row games left and the ones that stayed tarnished the series.

I feel like they were tying to play it too safe on this game and didn’t try to revert back to how the first two games were. It could of been a whole lot better had they just combined the things from the first two into the reboot as far as the open world goes and make the NPC’s actually feel like they’re living with their own personalties, The amount of detail that the NPC’s do in SR2 is really cool to see. both games either way have their own unique features
Considering that games like MW2019 and Destroy All Humans have moments that are not in the "too safe" category, that does raise questions.
Games like Detroit: Become Human and Watch Dogs 2 are other contenders to be noted, as well. Even Death Stranding.
