I miss the simpler time, when you just had to pop in the game CD and you could play the game as much as you want, even if you didn’t have internet.
Now, it’s become so invasive that even a normal singleplayer game can require you internet access for some reason. These decisions aren’t good for the companies doing it in the long run - because it’ll fuel hatred and even bigger demand for piracy, which would bring them even less money than if they’d invest in the logistics for physical disk media production of their games.

Refund policies are highly frustrating compared to physical media. I bought a game on steam a couple months ago, forgot about and and never played it. I noticed it in my library last week, and said "Aw heck, I haven't played this and I probably won't in the future" so I decided to try and refund it. Even with not even a second of playtime, they denied my refund because it had been more than 14 days, which seems like a small window. What if I bought the game on sale, didn't get a chance to play it and by the by time I realized the game was a pile of hot garbage, it'd be too late for a refund? It's just stupid, because if it was physical media I'd at least be able to sell it and get *something* back. Now I'm just stuck with a game I have no intentions of playing. Most of us (and those I work with) don't really have conscious awareness of digital privacy or data collection as a primary concern. Could be because almost every service they use inundates the same license agreement to them, and just shuts them out otherwise, or just information overload apathy.

"Licensed, not sold" actually means that you can't sell copies of your copy, it doesn't mean that you don't own your copy. Legally talking, we do own the games bought digitally, but in practice most of the time we have to use workaround methods to actually own them like circumventing or removing DRM by using a cracked executable (Steamless for the Steam's case although that's developer's choice to use SteamStub since there some games that do not use it, GOG sells DRM-free copies so there's nothing to crack) and jailbreaking the consoles to be able to run backup copies (doesn't apply to Xbox One and Series since it'll likely never be cracked). As for selling and lending, how do you sell/lend a "used game copy" if the offer is infinite?

    • @BlueRaptorNightFury
      @BlueRaptorNightFury 10 месяцев назад +1

Yeah, I remember watching Ross' video on why he believes games as a service are fraud (The same guy who did Freeman's mind), he brought up a user by the name of Delicieuxz on the Linus Tech Tips forum that pretty much explained and mentioned how the "You don't own the games you bought" is a myth and/or corporate propaganda.
This whole saying may have worsened cause many AAA companies would rather make a product that is live-service always-online only, instead of a traditional game, there for it's not really a owned game since it'd get shut down without warning sometimes since the product is more of a provided service than a game.
Games like Black Ops 2, GTA V, Halo (all Bungie). These are traditional games, but then you have Fortnite, the newer Call of Dutys (Maybe?), Halo Infinite. These are more of Live-service games cause they are built around a service-model rather than a standard game model. It can be understandable that people would feel like they don't own anything when so much of gaming now-a-days is predicting that the next big game coming out is just another Live-service game with a unknown death-timer.
At least games like Baulder's Gate 3 keeps some hope in the gaming market. But sadly we'd need more games with the same quality and standards.

First of all, these animations are impressive. I don't know how long these videos take, but that's beautiful. If you're of a certain age, you probably saw all of this coming 20+ years ago when they started selling discs with broken or outright missing games that required online access to download, and I wasn't about to pay the console manufacturers money to have online access that should have been free since I was already paying for my own internet service. To this day, I've never finished that Lego Star Wars game I have for the OG XBox because it had a game breaking bug that I can't download or apply a patch for. I stopped buying consoles and thus their games at that point and they can go fornicate themselves.

I don't know what it's like in other countries but weirdly in Australia it's far cheaper to buy games at a store on disc then on the Microsoft/Playstation store. New games are usually between 90-110 AUD in a physical store while online they are currently 125 AUD which is insane considering it is far cheaper to not have to produce and distribute physical discs.

    1. Dude, you HAVE to put these videos on your resume or something, you’d be like, *AMAZING* at an animation marketing job!
    2. Yeah, a problem I had with Starfield was that the game costed a hundred dollars to get early access, and I couldn’t even play the game on PC because it said I need a ‘higher graphics card’ booooo! I got a refund but, still man, still.
    3. It really sucks that the Xbox 360 store is shutting down, I never bought any games aside from dlcs for gta 5 and red dead redemption, but if that means the Avatar Store goes down too, man, that would suck, so many cool Minecraft, gta 5, red dead redemption and just other casual avatar clothes down the drain
    4. It really is going to suck for consumers if every triple A game in 2030 is going to be over 100, there’s a limit, for games ok, and I think that limit should stop with Red Dead Redemption 2’s price, 60, dollars.
    5. Yeah, I agree for once with this 2:58 Once, I bought South Park: The Fractured but whole, which I played on my friend’ computer which wasn’t used for gaming computers, and it really wasn’t working well, but unfortunately, because I played it for more than an hour or two, I couldn’t return it, which was so unpleasant and awful cause I had to play it in a lower graphics mode or else the game would constantly crash, and it crashed a lot of times! Yeah, there should definitely be a change in the refund system.
Great work as always Dark Space/ Ocean!

Nothing about your experiences are invalid, but the second point you listed is a 'problem' with the customizability of a computer. Simply put, your computer did not have the strength. You are not the one at fault here in my opinion, I believe platforms should be more open to the layman about the power of their rig. But what you describe is a problem with your computer; too little power. Increased via a better GPU. there was nothing more that could really be realistically done on Bethesda's part besides cutting down the graphics and scope of the game. That's just how it is in the space.

The biggest reason they're moving away from physical copies is to avoid people buying games second-hand or just barrowing from each other. They don't see a cent of that second-hand money which they don't like. This is why storefronts like GOG are SO IMPORTANT. You may not be getting a physical copy anymore, but what you do get when you buy a game on GOG is complete access to an offline installer for the game. Which is the next best thing. Just download the offline installer and store it on a portable drive and boom, about as much ownership of a digital game as you're going to get in this age. And, of course, there's always high seas installers as well for games that absolutely MUST have their DRM, but still have to wait on them.

Best example is Just Cause 3. It is an exclusively single player game but it forces you to wait through a loading screen every time you disconnect from the internet.

Tbh, Steam's refund policy never bothered me much. I've bought, tried, and refunded many games and they always do as long as it's within their criteria.
I do wish you had more than 2 weeks but I can understand how they don't want people taking advantage and finishing a game and then refunding or refunding a long time down the line so they force a deadline.
Because as opposed to a brick and mortar store, it takes no effort to return something digitally. That's the whole system around rebates for instance, you can rely more on the money the more inconvenient it is for the consumer to get it back.
Playstation's is terrible bc you can't even test the game. A game doesn't have to be "broken" to still be terrible or have had false advertising.
Not letting you even test the product is pretty scummy.

Especially when Sony and Microsoft are updating system software with a virus malware bug stopping some physical games from working intentionally forcing users to buy digital games

As someone who always buys physical, i dont plan to ever go digital only anytime soon. Will always love physically owning my game rather than basically renting it on server's.

I wish renting games digitally was a thing. I'd rent a single player game for a weekend and beat it and never play it ever again. I used to be able to do this with physical games in the old days but rentals arent a thing anymore.

As a steelbook collector the reason I don't collect game steelbooks is because there is no disc. I only collect movie steelbooks and most of the time it's 2 discs and a digital code. Or 3 discs and sometimes even 4 discs and a digital code.

One thing that deserves a mention here:
Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Future Redeemed (aka the ending of the Xenoblade series) is digital-only, meaning there is no physical release. (and even if Nintendo were to release a XBC3 complete edition, it will just be a normal cart without the DLC, all the DLC content, Future Redeemed included will just be a code on a piece of paper)
Meaning that, if Nintendo were to one day declare the Xenoblade Chronicles series to be a tax write-off (like what Warner did to Final Space), Future Redeemed (the ending of the Klaus saga) and the whole Xenoblade series as a whole will be unobtainable to future generations.
Meaning that the only way to experience the Xenoblade Chronicles series in 2042 is through old Let’s Play videos, if the game(s) are already installed on a old Switch, buying expensive physical copies or getting character skin mods for GTA 5 (or GTA 6), Left 4 Dead 2 and GMod.

The switch files of the dlc are already backed up since the first model of the switch is easily hackable. So in a couple of decadea, the dlc will be playable on hacked switches and on emulators.

I tried to buy Insomniacs Spiderman 2 Collectors Edition but I had trouble trying to get into their website store. I went to buy it on Amazon but I couldn't find it, I tried to buy the Deluxe Edition and I couldn't find it so in the end I ended up pre-ordering the standard. I was bummed but at least I had a copy. Now that I know about the Collectors having no disc and Deluxe Edition not having a physical copy I am so glad I went with the base game. I saved myself from theft and I saved hundreds of pounds. Even Insomniac cant escape the clutches of corporate greed.

I buy games on PSN sometimes because it’s on sale for less than $10. But high value games I always buy physically because I plan on replaying them for many years to come without any problems.

On the issue of refunds, I pre-ordered GT7 (digital) being a life-long fan of the series. Seeing the dissatisfied reviews upon its release, I requested a refund from Sony figuring I’d wait until it was on sale to pick it back up. Sony initially declined a refund stating I’d downloaded and played the game already. I had absolutely done NEITHER!! They eventually caved but made it apparent they were doing me some sort of favor returning my money since I’d never requested a refund before. I have not since and will never again pre-order a digital console game after that stunt they tried to pull! It also left such a bad impression I still haven’t repurchased GT7, even on sale for over half off.
