That Angry Joe interview was legendary. Major Nelson tried to deflect Joe's assertions by attacking his credibility, a terrible debate strategy. When Joe says "You can disable the DRM, it's easy," Major Nelson refuses to actually address the issue and asks "Are you on the development team?" The truth is Joe is 100% correct and he knows he's correct and so does Major Nelson. He doesn't have to be on the development team to know that it's easy for Microsoft to do this. Also, later in the interview Angry Joe asks about the legality of denying second hand game sales in certain countries to which Major Nelson replies "Are you a lawyer?" Again, it doesn't matter if Joe is a lawyer or not, it's a perfectly reasonable question to ask. Seriously, if you haven't watched this interview it's amazing, especially since Joe tries to act polite the whole way through and is treated so dismissively.

This is why I greatly respect most indie developers. They don’t have that good of a foothold in the industry as the big shots do. So when they make it big, it’s because they poured their time, creativity, and passion into their games. And you can feel that quality in their games. I hope this area of the gaming industry stays strong for years to come

i'm one of those 13 million who had a Wii U, i actually quite enjoyed the console for what it was but Nintendo definitely screwed up the marketing for that console
Yeah it was actually a great console with some pretty decent games on it, the marketing and name were the worst I've ever seen though. So many people even in gaming circles thought it was just a tablet for the Wii or just a refresh.
Very good video! I have some feedback though: when you were mentioning revenue numbers, sometimes they appeared on screen BEFORE you said them, while imo they should appear as you're mentioning them! For me, a European, English is a secondary language, definitely not my native and it's sometimes very hard to watch an English video when the visuals and narration don't quite match up!

Before I clicked on to watch this, at first I thought it was going to be literally about how big games are, as in, filesize/storage space...😅 But yeah, this turned out to be yet another VERY well presented in-depth video overall, and whilst sure there were still a lot of mentions of GTA/Rockstar/Take-Two, the main focus of the video itself wasn't on them for a change, but whilst still retaining that fantastic overall quality content we've come to enjoy!👍👏 You've really done a great job of showing the 'humble beginnings' of the Gaming Industry, to the current state of it today, along with a ton of success it's had, but the downfall of many things along the way, such as the likes of Maxis, Bullfrog, Westwood Studios, etc that EA basically killed/ruined😫 Also, nowadays I rarely if ever pre-order games, instead I buy 'new' games a full year or two after release for about half price or more, meaning I can buy multiple games for the same price as one single new release, as well as most of those games likely being fixed by that point later down the line, or at least in a far more playable state than release, such as Cyberpunk for example!👍 Another one being the recent GTA Trilogy "Definitive Edition" release, think I'll be holding off on that for a year or two, given it certainly is NOT worth the £55-60 scam they're currently pulling... even if it's three games in one, around £15-20 per game, the state of those games right now is more like £5 for ALL three... and that's being generous! I miss the days of buying games directly from a store and knowing that what you paid for is the FULL game ready to be played, compared to these microtranasction heavily monitised scams we're being given nowadays!🙄 Also, Physical releases will always be better than Digital, these 'discless' console versions should be put to an end/stop already, no disc drive = no sale as far as I'm concerned!
I preorderd three games till now. The Crew 2 because I was in closed Beta. Played for around 340hrs after release. So 0.3€ per Hour (100€ Gold Edition) Far Cry 5 for 90€ Gold Edition (100-150hrs) Approximatly 1€ per hour. Ace Combat 7 a series dear to my hearts for 150€ with DLC. Maybe 80hrs, but it was definitly worth it to me. Sadly the Fanmadep Esport did crumble in the conception, otherwise I surely would've tripled the time (as a competitor). No I dunno if Escape from Tarkov falls into the same vein as Game as a Service closed Beta and no Microtransactions, but for 35€ I got 340hrs to till, now, still rising. I won't talk about the money and time I put into World of Tanks, WoT and War Thunder.
Your videos deserve at least a million views. That not only benefits you but more people will know about the bullshit that is happening in the gaming industry and maybe, just maybe, from millions of views, something would change
I, of course, agree with you, but there is one thing you get wrong, and it's that the more the percentage of people who play video games increases, the stupider the average player gets, so they will eat up any garbage you throw at them and think it's great. That's why those types of business models work. It's not about companies being evil or greedy, it is about people being dumb.

Great documentary. Just one critique, you disrespected the king. Halo 2 is the game that really put video games on the map as a competitor to movies, having made $124 million in its first 24 hours and beating Pirates of the Caribbean for being the highest grossing release in entertainment history at the time.
I practically don't even really spend money on games anymore, because I have plenty of games already that can give me hours of enjoyment, like Garrys Mod, Platinumquest (which nobody has heard of) and the Jackbox Party Pack games. There are plenty of good games out there today, you just have to find them. If a game hasn't been released yet, don't pre order it, and don't buy it until you've seen gameplay from the final version. If a game is made by a company you don't like (such as EA) there's probably an alternative that's better in every way. Sadly though this comment wasn't early enough to gain any traction, so I guess nobody will hear my message.
Yeah, but that only works for single player only games though. You need player count for online stuff so it's extremely hard to find viable alternatives.

Okay I see some facts wrong that you put in the “Console Sales” chapter. The PS2 wasn’t the first 6th Generation Video Game Console. It was the Sega Dreamcast (Released November 27, 1998 in Japan. Released September 9, 1999 in North America). The Nintendo GameCube was released 2 months earlier ahead of the Microsoft Xbox (Released September 14, 2001 in North America). And you claim that SuperDisc, Sony’s first project for a video game console, happened in 1998. Well you’re a dead wrong conspiracy theorist if you think that. I could see this project happening with Nintendo going under the name SuperDisc around 1989 and going under the name PlayStation in 1991. Okay very sorry if I called you a dead wrong conspiracy theorist you must have mistaken 1989 for 1998 and that must have been typo on your part. After all, humans still make mistakes. Lol Phil Spencer stated when the Xbox Series X/S were launching that Sony and Nintendo aren’t competition, Amazon Luna and google stadia are. Sony hasn’t really been competition too Microsoft, in the recent years we’ve seen more people buying Xbox’s over PlayStation’s.

Dude, really? Kingdom come deliverance, Mafia, etc. do take time to make open world games that are well detailed. And then there's hugely underrated gems like distance, which barely gets talked about yet its as innovative as some of the best games like portal series. You don't need a open world or huge amounts of detail to make a good game. And then there's games that have a extensive modding scene like minecraft and skyrim. Even gta has this.
Great video, but I have some criticism. Excluding both sega and handhelds from console sales is missing a significant part of gaming history. Also, when discussing some of the most sold games, you counted ff7 under playstation studios, when square developed the title.

I'm only a little more than 7 minutes in and I already see the first error. The 1st console in the 6th generation was the Sega Dreamcast in 1998 in Japan & 1999 in the US. Also, at least so far, there is a noticable lack of Sega history here.
This honestly puts so much stuff into perspective. So much information and explained so well, accompanied by the amazing editing. Every second had my attention. This, was amazing
The biggest issue I have with this video, is the fact cyberpunk was hated on so much. They got THREATS from “taking too long” from its fans who wanted the game, even when they delayed the game multiple times before they knew it needed more work… and the game was still amazing for me on ps4, and once I got and played it on my ps5, one of the best games I’d ever played with basically no issues at all… I preordered the dlc for cyberpunk and can’t wait to play.
23:50 I personally preordered Forza Horizon 5 on steam after they did the lets go streams since they showcased gameplay and it looked pretty good and I was interested to that, forza horizon 4 was pretty good which I also played at launchday with gamepass and I wasn't disappointed I think its sad that you cant say that about every publisher tho
The gameplay on Forza games is always the same so that's easy, the maps for the Horizon ones are absolutelly insane and filled to the brim in details, but there's a thing that they do terribly, the cars themselves, there are some vehicle models that come from the X360 era, where they still didn't do photoscans of the vehicles, and didn't have fully modeled engine bays and interiors (you can notice this by the lights textures), and the customization is almost nonexistent. So yeah, is a game that won't dissapoint, but in the same way a CoD does if you like that style.

Wouldn't you want you money into something that not only brings you entertainment but know that it's was worth your money as well?... I mean we put in so much money into our consoles and PCs that the games we play aren't even done or pushed out so quickly that it's a buggy mess altogether...

MW was fun to me and yeah it had it's fair share of bugs and glitches, but MAN at least it was playable at launch. cold war was a joke. and don't even get me started on Vanguard.

I think EA is fiddling the numbers when it comes to Madden and their titles generally. I'm not saying Madden doesnt sell disappointingly well, but they seem to take into account free copies they give away via social media which if you look, easily number in the thousands, and that the game goes on sale almost immediately. Without these tactics I believe they'd need to report major downturns in their sales and this needs to be looked into and reported on more.
This got me so interested that I took 30 minutes out of my time to watch this instead of doing my homework just to fall into the trap of microtransactions tomorrow.

Also, nowadays I rarely if ever pre-order games, instead I buy 'new' games a full year or two after release for about half price or more, meaning I can buy multiple games for the same price as one single new release, as well as most of those games likely being fixed by that point later down the line, or at least in a far more playable state than release, such as Cyberpunk for example!👍 Another one being the recent GTA Trilogy "Definitive Edition" release, think I'll be holding off on that for a year or two, given it certainly is NOT worth the £55-60 scam they're currently pulling... even if it's three games in one, around £15-20 per game, the state of those games right now is more like £5 for ALL three... and that's being generous! I miss the days of buying games directly from a store and knowing that what you paid for is the FULL game ready to be played, compared to these microtranasction heavily monitised scams we're being given nowadays!🙄 Also, Physical releases will always be better than Digital, these 'discless' console versions should be put to an end/stop already, no disc drive = no sale as far as I'm concerned!

Ace Combat 7 a series dear to my hearts for 150€ with DLC.
Maybe 80hrs, but it was definitly worth it to me. Sadly the Fanmadep Esport did crumble in the conception, otherwise I surely would've tripled the time (as a competitor).
No I dunno if Escape from Tarkov falls into the same vein as Game as a Service closed Beta and no Microtransactions, but for 35€ I got 340hrs to till, now, still rising.
I won't talk about the money and time I put into World of Tanks, WoT and War Thunder.

I, of course, agree with you, but there is one thing you get wrong, and it's that the more the percentage of people who play video games increases, the stupider the average player gets, so they will eat up any garbage you throw at them and think it's great. That's why those types of business models work. It's not about companies being evil or greedy, it is about people being dumb.
The companies just take advantage of what the majority of people will buy.

I practically don't even really spend money on games anymore, because I have plenty of games already that can give me hours of enjoyment, like Garrys Mod, Platinumquest (which nobody has heard of) and the Jackbox Party Pack games. There are plenty of good games out there today, you just have to find them. If a game hasn't been released yet, don't pre order it, and don't buy it until you've seen gameplay from the final version. If a game is made by a company you don't like (such as EA) there's probably an alternative that's better in every way. Sadly though this comment wasn't early enough to gain any traction, so I guess nobody will hear my message.

I could see this project happening with Nintendo going under the name SuperDisc around 1989 and going under the name PlayStation in 1991. Lol Phil Spencer stated when the Xbox Series X/S were launching that Sony and Nintendo aren’t competition, Amazon Luna and google stadia are. Sony hasn’t really been competition too Microsoft, in the recent years we’ve seen more people buying Xbox’s over PlayStation’s.

And then there's hugely underrated gems like distance, which barely gets talked about yet its as innovative as some of the best games like portal series. You don't need a open world or huge amounts of detail to make a good game.

I'm only a little more than 7 minutes in and I already see the first error. The 1st console in the 6th generation was the Sega Dreamcast in 1998 in Japan & 1999 in the US. Also, at least so far, there is a noticable lack of Sega history here.

Great video. Loved the editing. Curious as to why handheld consoles are omitted (Game Boy, DS, PSP) but mobile games are mentioned.
The biggest issue I have with this video, is the fact cyberpunk was hated on so much. They got THREATS from “taking too long” from its fans who wanted the game, even when they delayed the game multiple times before they knew it needed more work… and the game was still amazing for me on ps4, and once I got and played it on my ps5, one of the best games I’d ever played with basically no issues at all… I preordered the dlc for cyberpunk and can’t wait to play.

I personally preordered Forza Horizon 5 on steam after they did the lets go streams since they showcased gameplay and it looked pretty good and I was interested
to that, forza horizon 4 was pretty good which I also played at launchday with gamepass and I wasn't disappointed
I think its sad that you cant say that about every publisher tho
The gameplay on Forza games is always the same so that's easy, the maps for the Horizon ones are absolutelly insane and filled to the brim in details, but there's a thing that they do terribly, the cars themselves, there are some vehicle models that come from the X360 era, where they still didn't do photoscans of the vehicles, and didn't have fully modeled engine bays and interiors (you can notice this by the lights textures), and the customization is almost nonexistent.
So yeah, is a game that won't dissapoint, but in the same way a CoD does if you like that style.
but at the same time, the release date caused most cars lacking exterior modifications in favor of the newly introduced ones

23:11 It doesn't matter if it's literally the same game every year, the little kids are still going to get their parents to buy the games for them lol. it's the same thing with COD, same game but just in a slightly different setting and usually having a huge dip in quality compared to the game before it. literally that's what happened with Cold War. MW was fun to me and yeah it had it's fair share of bugs and glitches, but MAN at least it was playable at launch. cold war was a joke. and don't even get me started on Vanguard.

I think EA is fiddling the numbers when it comes to Madden and their titles generally. I'm not saying Madden doesnt sell disappointingly well, but they seem to take into account free copies they give away via social media which if you look, easily number in the thousands, and that the game goes on sale almost immediately. Without these tactics I believe they'd need to report major downturns in their sales and this needs to be looked into and reported on more.
Ubisoft plays it safe. They only release what has worked in the past with only a couple of tweaks.
