Exactly the same with me. My cat was a 3 month old kitten when my wife and I brought him home, and in no time (approximately 10 minutes) he was strutting around the place like he'd never been away.
Our 16-year old cat died two months ago. I tried to see if no cats in the house would improve my home air quality and I found that having a cat around for company is in my DNA and I don't think I can go much longer without a cat.
When I brought my cat home and let her out of the box she just sat down on my legs, wanted some cuddles and fell asleep soon 💗 Later she explored everything of course. But first some cuddles 😊
I got my shelter kitty Rori just as she turned 8. She hid in my closet the first day. But it wasn't private so she found my storage room. Which was perfect for her. I fixed it up and that was her place. It was the 3rd day she came out, when I sat down to watch t.v. And she ran and jumped up in my lap. Every night since that's her fav thing. She now has 6 other hidden little cat beds she likes. She doesn't meow, or climb up on anything. And she sleeps on my legs every night. I must be a sound sleeper
When I got my first kitten, she hid under the couch. I didn't try to pull her out but simply had a string that I moved around the couch and she came out after an 10 minutes, and she got used to me. In the evening, she slept next to me on The couch. Took her another 2 days to not be afraid of my mum who did not spend time with her at all. So effort and loving encouragement goes a long way with kitties :)
Just got a cat from the shelter and this explains a lot. Now I know that her behavior is normal and to expect it to possibly last for 2 weeks. Thanks!!
I just adopted a 2 year old calico a few days ago and she's the cutest thing everrr! Now she chills in my bed and her own bed, which she didn't even want to step on the first night xD great video!
I wish I knew this earlier. I adopted beautiful cat yesterday, and immediately he went under heavy living room couch. Spent hours there. My mom and I dragged him out, and he hid inside popup pillow for a while, then in the middle of the night ran under the couch again. Has not left since! He is alive, as I peaked under.
This really helped. My new cat has been nervous about leaving her acclimation room and I thought it was taking too long. But really it has only been a couple of days. Now that I know that's normal, I can chill. Thank you!
Just came back from the humane society in my town. Tomorrow I bring home my first cat. I'm really nervous and excited, thanks for making such a fun and simple video about the process! :)
I’m going to get my 3rd rescue today.. she’s a 1 yr old that was found with 3 tiny babies and a shoulder broke in 3 places... I’ve got 2 other rescues.. 1 is old n only wants to be left alone.. n then there’s the baby.. found her tiny 6 months ago... I’m so excited I have my bedroom ready for her n it will be a slow introduction.. got 2 old dogs to that love cats so no issues there .. but they will all know a new kitty will be in moms room
Just adopted a senior citizen tabby cat - he is 10 years old. I just opened his kennel and like you said, he just ran straight under my bed. I left him food, water, a litter-box and a bed. Hopefully I can earn his trust, thankfully my computer is in my room aswell so I can do research about this while he's under my bed.
I have re-homed 6 stray/feral cats with no problems. Now this 7th stray doesn’t like ANYONE but me. I can’t keep her though. I’m trying the third home today. Wish me luck. The last two homes she just hid under the couch, hissed and tried to scratch the people for two weeks. The both asked me to come get her. With me she is all cuddles and purring. She is like two different cats.
I've adopted a kitten today he's only been introduced to one room and has only been in his crate and under my bed he's used the litter box but not yet eaten or drank water I'm trying to let him do things on his own but what do I do if he still won't eat or drink
Same thing as mine now... I just bought an exotic shorthair... he drank a little water but he won’t eat and he hides under the bed. He’s in my guest room and ima jus leave him in there until he ready to come out. He meows a lot too when he’s alone in there but I go check on him and pet him
@@thescene7147 Hey! It's been about 2 weeks with our little baby now and she has completely warmed up and began loving my fiance and I about 4 days into having her! She kneads on both of us in the morning to wake us up and isn't shy to invite herself into bed with us every night. Didn't take her very long to warm up to us after I offered to my hand under the bed to pet her about 4 hours after bringing her home for the first time. Would love to hear an update about your little girl and how introducing yourself went!
Just got a cat from a shelter today. He is 8 months old. Quite big cat. He is hiding currently, as everything is new to him XD Placed a big paper bag on the floor if he wants to play, also placed fresh water and chunks. Hope he likes the place!
When we got a new cat or cats (twice during my childhood, and twice during my adulthood) we just put him down as soon as we got him home, showed him where the food and litter box was, and let him explore on his own for a while. We never set up a separate room for them. I never heard of doing that until now. My cats were a little skittish at first, but they settled in nicely after a day or two, no separation needed. When we moved to a new house our cat was a little spooked at first, she spent the first day hiding in a closet, but she was fine after that. Cats adapt quickly. Again, we didn't set up a different room for her when we moved, she had already been living with us for 3 years.
My parents are adopting two cats named Hinge and Yoda. Very excited, as we lost our cat Chloe almost two years ago. I wanted to watch this to help them be comfortable in my room if they ever want to come upstairs. I'm not putting a litterbox and food in my room but a few toys and enough space to lay around is nice. Thankfully they're both short haired and i'm not allergic!
I have a question. I just rescued a 7 yr old rehomed kitty. She’s very sweet and I want to start off on the right paw. Is there a video that gives an example of how to set up a routine that includes mealtimes, play time, potty time (?), bedtime? I have a willing kitty but don’t know how to train her. Please help.Thank you!
This was helpful! I just adopted my first cat and shes a super shy 4 year old tortoiseshell. Shes been hiding in her carrier the entire time so im picking out a name while i try to give her some space
We got two new cats today from animal shelter . One of them has been running around the house all day and night . But they won’t come to us yet . Can’t wait . 😀
We adopted two cats over a week ago. The female stopped hiding after 3 days and is socialising with us. The male cat we have only seen three times as he is in hiding and runs off if we see him. We are feeding him under the couch where he hides. We so want to meet him but we know this could take a long time the home told us.

Oof
Dude, this made me laugh big time 🤣
she does
The cat was like wait a minute you tricked me, I'm still at the shelter 😢
;c
Noooo :(
Just an FYI - I think she meant to say sprinkle CATNIP not Cat Litter on the scratching post. Great video for newbies.
too late, now i have cat litter all over the place! thanks humane society... got any other "usefull" tips.
MrGuitarHack 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Imagine if you mixed catnip into cat litter hahaha
You saved the day! ThankS!

You rock, cgrscott!
I don't see cats as a great factor for changing air quality.
When I brought my cat home and let her out of the box she just sat down on my legs, wanted some cuddles and fell asleep soon 💗

The cat is so flipping cute.

EXACTLY!
Agreed!
Give my dog both
I was thinking that lol
Depends on the animal, mine hates wet food
I recently adopted a kitten, and was given pretty much this exact same advice. I was lucky as it only took a few days for my kitten to settle in.

my cat was just like roaming around once i put her down and literally felt comfortable already..
Well my tomcat clawed his way out of the cardboard box and ended up sleeping on my lap when I was driving home after adopting him.
i usually start of with putting them in the litterbox right away and let them roam as they like from there so they know where to pee and poop.
Do you have the instructions on how to build that cat tower thingy with the PVC pipe? I would love to put one like that together for my cats.
I had a new cat who stayed under couch for 5 days before coming out when I was present.
Getting one for my son next week I'm so excited

When you transport a carrier or a box in your car ALWAYS attach the handle to a seat belt.
So if I let my new cat chill in my room what do I do if I want to move everything to the living room for example moving the litter box to the bathroom and food bowls to the kitchen
"This cat works right out of the box" :)
I am adopting a cat tomorrow. I was wondering how long I should keep the cat in its "comfort space?" Should I keep the door closed?

Dont force your cat when they are scared...common sense. They will only get more scared of you

What happens when your cat stops eating from being in a new environment? How do you encourage them to eat?
