The adult cat/female's maternal instincts have kicked in. The kitten wasn't "covered in her saliva", she was CLEANING him! The fact that she wasn't the least bit hesitant/stand-offish, but was trying to move in quickly and then "take him to a place that felt safe/comforting" should tell you something.
Yup. They did need to feed the kitten because adoptive mom couldn't, but all they had to do was make her a nest where she felt safe and let her have the baby other than the feedings. The feedings could've been done in the nesting box so mom felt safe. The panting at 9:40 made me sick. This poor cat is 10/10 stressed over the situation. They weren't handling this well at all.

The baby can lick her or his breasts like a baby did to my male cat before. Milk is already given by human but baby needs a lot of things not just milk. He or she can lick her belly in order to get baby pee

Come on, he made a cat nest for them. Fed the kitten and helped it relieve itself daily. Obviously he was worried the big cat would attack at first. It may have looked rough, but the kitty was totally fine. Spoiled at that.
My grandson found a Siamese kitten in a parking lot outside his work. He was a lovely boy. He bonded with my adult male cat. He adopted kitty and took care of him. Slept with him while hugging him. It was beautiful. Taught him to use litter box etc. they are still close and kitten Selkie has grown to a sweet 1 year old.

A couple years ago I rescued an abandoned kitten who was 10 days old. He looked EXACTLY like this kitten except he didn't have a tail and his ears were white. I kept him over the weekend and fed him and everything else, and fortunately found a nursing mother who ended up accepting him so he got a new family. Even though I only had him for 3 days, I still miss that little guy. He went over 24 hours without eating and still made it. He would sleep on my chest most of the time and you always knew when he was going to fall asleep because he would start licking his paws. He was so cute. His little clickety purr was the most adorable thing ever.
Been where you're many times. Allow your cat to be close as you fed the baby. Grown cat will "burp" the baby for you before and after feeding. Your grown kitty is a kitty "mama" and your the human mama. You can all be close as a family taking care f the baby. Enjoy and hand fed babies are special!

While there are occasional cases of false or pseudopregnancy in cats when they lactate, this occurs when the female cat goes into a heat cycle and ovulates but does not become pregnant unless that is but still cannot produce milk but of course that she can protect the kitten but cannot give him milk that it.
Give her the kitten she has accepted it as her own she will naturally produce milk and give it the love it needs she will teach it everything it needs to to live

Looks like my "resident" female cat when I brought home 3 (3 wk) old kittens. She would not leave them alone, tried to take them away and lick them to death, slept on top of their playpen at night to be near them and if they cried she would jump up and try to find them and take care of them. At first, she was a bit rough but over time she became like their big sister or mother!

Stressed me out that person shoving white cat quite roughly I might add 😢 including excessive panting and yawning from stress they put white cat thru a serious situation because that amount of panting was not good !
