I learned as a teenager that trapping cats against their wishes, even just to express affection, is the best way to ensure that they hate snuggling. When I got older, I made a point of always allowing my cat to leave when it wanted, and have thus consistently found that cats that know they can leave whenever they wish like to snuggle the most, and are least likely to want to leave.
I've been a Registered Veterinary Technician for 53 years. I must tell you, this is probably the best video on cats on the internet!! There was not one detail I could argue against. You were precise on what not to do, and explained why very clearly so that even new cat owners would understand. I have to give you a big five (10) Paws up for this!! 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
My Vet told me it was okay to pick up my tuxedo cat by the scruff of the neck because she refuses to let anyone pick her up normally. She was a homeless kitten that I found in my backyard. I gave her a forever home & got her fixed when she was old enough. She is very loveable, but SHE WILL NOT LET YOU PICK HER UP! I don't have to pick her up by the scruff of the neck very often, but when I do, it comes in handy!
@TheSleepingonit They get it dirty by using it as a face cleaning source. After eating, you might see them going straight for the water bowl, not to drink (at first) but to wash off any remaining food bits. That's why most fountains have a filter pack on them, it catches these bits so they don't return to fresh water. You DO have to clean those fountains at a frequency that doesn't overload the filter.
I never forced my cat to cuddle with me. Whenever she wanted to leave, I let her go. Now I have a velcro cat. She jumps up on my lap and stays there as long as I let her. She follows me around the house a lot too. Preferring to be in same room I'm in. 😊
When we got our cat i was told she would never be a lap cat. This child will NOT leave me alone. She sleeps with me, sits on my lap when im at my desk, sits on my lap when im watching TV, brushes between my legs when im brushing my teeth. She doesnt even like it when I close the door to use the bathroom. Sits outside and yells.
@@schneecoraxx8689It could be The Type of cat you have. Our deceased cat (Tippy) was a Tuxedo and acted more like a dog. At Night he would visit everyone's bedroom and make sure all was well. Our Guarddog ❤
We had a 1950's night light. A single LED bulb (smaller than a pea). One night there were no stars and the moon wasn't up. Hubby reached over and took the night light out of the outlet. I told him he had to put it back in because cats can't see in total darkness they need some light for their eyes to magnify it. He said no they can see just fine. I told him no they can't. Just then there was a THUNK!!!! My cat was walking from the bed to the window sill and fell to the floor. I said " I TOLD YOU SO!!" Only three times in my life time(I'm 65)has the been such PERFECT TIMING!!!!
It's true that cats can't see in total darkness, but it's actually quite difficult to get a room dark enough that a cat can't see, especially in the modern day. There are so many LEDs it's hard to cover them all. My bedroom in the basement of my house is all blacked out. I have black out curtains over black out blinds in the window, and I've gone around and taped over every LED light I can find. But still, if I wake up in the middle of the night, my eyes are adjusted to the dark to the point I can see quite well. I can't see a thing when I go to bed. But as you sleep your eyes adjust to the dark. There are just a couple of LED lights that put off so little light that I can't even find them unless I get up in the middle of the night. And if that's enough light for me to see when my eyes are well adjusted, it's plenty of light for a cat, who can see far better than me in the dark. I've never seen it get dark enough that my cats struggle to see.
now if vets behaved like actural doctor rather than money grabbing machines........we would be prone to care more about what those working for them claim.

I’m not a cat person. Rescued dogs all my life; I’m 68. Somehow I’ve now got two young cats. Two totally different personalities. Ones a love bug, the other does not want me to initiate petting. One sleeps a lot, the other would rather play than sleep. One is smarter than hell, the other needs a helluva lot of coaxing to learn anything. This video is quite helpful. Thank you
Whether it's A Cat or Dog, in your Life it makes life worth living cats have been my support mentally all my life, but I wasn't a Dog person until I meet someone who had a Dog he's breed was heinz 57 and he was the most loving fella you could wish to meet, dear old Charlie my he rest in peace.😢🐶
My cat loves your voice. As I watch the video she listened attentively and even came over to sniff the phone, which she usually only does if she recognizes the voice of a beloved friend or family member. She paid no attention to the commercials, but every time the video started again her ears perked up.
I have had cats my entire life. My first would wait for me at the end of our road to come home from school. It has been my considerable experience with my cats that they all have their own personalities and just like humans don't like to be forced to do things they don't want to do. However, with love and affection, their different personalities thrive, and they show us under these circumstances their likes, dislikes, and attitude. Some love cuddles, and some show their love less demonstratively, but love you no less. One of my cats thought my singing meant I was in pain (yes, I'm that bad). Even as she got old, she would struggle to get off her comfy spot to check on me. She never left my side when I had a miscarriage. Some like to play, and some don't. It's been my experience that they know the difference between a toy and prey, probably because animals sense fear. Cats are intelligent, loving, and affectionate, and all have their own little personalities.
I’ve had several cats over my adult years. Almost all these issues I have just naturally adhered to. I get angry when I see ppl who can’t read their cats signals. I had one that wanted to be aggressive toward me. Ironically it was my last of the many I had. He would swipe at me scratch me and bite. I started wearing suede driving gloves at the times and places he did it. Then if he bit or scratched me I’d gently bop him on the forehead and say “you don’t bite your mommy.” Watching cats you will see the head bop is what cats will do to warn other cats. They usually do not extend their claws at first. This worked well. I also did J. Galaxy’s suggestion to slowly close my eyes and wait until the cat copies me. I did this over and over with an aggressive cat of one of my patients that would attack me while making the clients bed. Soon the cat was laying down next to me on the floor and playing with its toys and me. Cats give you so many signs when they are having different feelings.
Hey can you give me some suggestion please? My cat bites me so much at night even in my face. And she becomes too much hyper at night.. My sister is afraid of this behaviour of my cat and I also feel stressed when she acts like that.. What should I do? I'm a new cat owner so I'm asking for help from you
When she becomes crazy, me and my sister cannot help putting her in other room.. But then, she tries to come at our room again and again.. If we allow her to come, she starts biting us and running all over the room.. Sometimes, I feel so frustrated because of her behaviour
@@niharikaniru13 Im not a cat expert but I have had 15 cats in my life as a kid and adult. All of them stray cats we adopted. It sounds like your cat likely is doing everything at night because the day was boring. Play with your cat, tire her out, provide puzzles and things to do. Provide a window for her to look out and watch birds, make sure she gets activity during the day. If you work all day everyday maybe hire someone to come spend and hour playing with her whole you are at work. If she is a kitten unfortunely this is something they do regardless for a bit as kittens and all my cat grew out of it once I developed and kept to a routine. Cats like routines like dogs. Even maybe consider taking your cat out into a safe area like a patio or back years in a harness...to get some entertainment.
Everyone on here with their "funny" cats videos need to see this. Too many people pick their grown cats up by the neck. I say something when I see it but usually just get yelled at by half the comments. I'll still do it in hopes that someone actually doesn't know it's harmful and stops.
The “harmless cute funny”Instagram videos my boyfriend sends me are so horrific involving pets & animals in general. The amount of harmful treatment happening out there & getting spread around the internet seriously horrifies me, & if you find comments of ppl calling attention to why it’s problematic, all the retaliating comments are absolutely disgusting😔
People these days can be nasty and enjoy hating on others. These cowardly demoniacs know that they don't have to look you in the eye when they're making their comments from the comfort of their smelly easy chairs that are held together with duct tape. Don't let them discourage you.
Most of the "funny" cat videos I see are straight up cat abuse. Im sorry people harassed you for pointing out the truth. Sadly, most people dont care enough about animals to treat them with dignity
This video with such vital information should have a MILLION Likes. Why aren't people understanding or willing to do these sensible right things is mind boggling.
I understand completely what you’re saying. I was strict, dog person, or dog lady ☺️ my daughter, came home one day and handed me a female “Maine Coon “cat. When we first got her, she was an angry, angry cat, attacking everyone and hiding under beds or any place she could find. I knew nothing about cats ,though that’s not true. I had one cat before ,who ran away as, she passed me as I opened the door. I didn’t know where To start to help her find a place in our home. I found out that there was, After questioning ,other cats in her last home who abused her terribly. I think a reasonable reason is they don't know. I mean how tf is everyone gonna assume too many toys would make a cat depressed? They don't exactly tell us
I have always made sure to clean out my cats' bowls and replace the water twice per week. After this video I will make sure to do it more often. I grew up with dogs but in my later years I have been adopted by several cats. I have 2 inside. One since she was a kitten and the other I took in from the street at about 10 yrs old. That one is my shadow and goes everywhere I do. I also have 3 ferals outside I take care of. They are getting braver by the day as now 2 of them will come in my door with I open it to go out and feed them. I am now a certified cat lady and love every minute of it.
Changing water in bowls is usually done everyday.. Everyday is the norm and that's what we do for our cats and figus as well as the water we keep for the street kitties outside..
The best cats come as rescues, they are more willing to give love when they feel loved, and can become very loving, loyal and trusting. ❤ You are blessed!
This is an excellent video. As a cat owner for over for over 30 years, I have learned most of this already! But I am going to share, as everyone should know this. Huge paws up!
I just trimmed my Tony’s nails, and brushed his fur. He usually sleeps with me but is in his bed downstairs; looking at me like I’d done him harm. Poor baby, I was gentle but he just doesn’t like it. I gave him lots of treats in between the trimming and brushing… 🤷♀️
I remember being about 10 years old when I saw a neighbor's young child (4-5 years) picking up a cat totally wrong. I went over and taught her to support kitty's butt and chest while picking up the cat. I'm not even sure how I knew, but I was so proud of myself and her for listening. 😂😂😂
I've never had my own cat, but for several years I lived in a rooming house with cats. One of them was very independent and, in fact, he seemed to believe that he was a human trapped in some unfortunate lifestyle where he had to eat cat food out of a bowl with cats, use a litter box that cats used, look other humans in their shins instead of in their eyes. When I first met him, he only allowed a couple of people to even touch him, and only his official human could pick him up. Well, it seemed to me that Mister Cat was missing out on some essential elements of life, so I simply wouldn't take "no" for an answer from him. To pick him up, I used what to me was common sense and the way I thought I would want to be picked up if I were a cat -- just as described in the video! At first, Mister Cat went rigid, but once he was up eye to eye with the rest of his "fellow humans", serious purring began. I walked around the house backward so he could see where we were going over my shoulder. From that moment forward, Mister Cat was the bestest buddy. He would come to my room to get me if he needed something and his official human wasn't around, because all he had to do was meow once and I understood what he was telling me about -- did he want to go outside, was the food dish empty, was the water dish empty, did he want to play, did he just want some company for a while, did he want me to pick him up and walk him backwards around the house again. If I had not instinctively known the correct way to lift a cat, I may have ruined any chance of experiencing such an enriching cross-species friendship, for both myself and for Mister Cat -- although if he could still be here today, he would probably wonder what I mean by "cross-species". 😉
It comes naturally i adopted a wild cat about 5-6 days ago and i feel like i know everything but I don't know but I just feel like it i know some things but i do😂
Veterinary medicine professional here- This is one of very few lists of these things that is precisely accurate and it lists common misconceptions that aren't talked about often enough like: scruffing (this can and does often cause irreversible, tragic injury and it ends their lives, stop doing it), spraying with water and expecting them to react as a human would, forcing them to be held or kept somewhere even if you have good intentions. Along with everything else listed in this video, these tips are all valuable and spot on. Well done!
please, enlightn me "oh wise one", the fuck else am I supposed to do when I catch my cats doing shit they aren't supposed to? I don't smack them, I hate yelling because i know thats not doing anything but scaring them, the fuck else are you supposed to do when your cat is ripping open new loaves of bread 20 mintues after eating a can of soft food to themselves, or scratching furniture.
About a handful of years ago, i subscribed to a cat magazine from a vet school. In that magazine shocked me: All the fabric softeners that we folks have used are affecting cat's thyroid levels. The chemicals in fire retardant blanklets, carpets, clothes, bedding, etc. There are blanklets for example that one can get without the added chemicals. The article went onto say, thats why there is an increase of hyperthyroidism in animals. I immediately stopped all my luquid, sheet fabric softeners in my clothes n in THEIR BLANKLETS..ANYTHING THEY SIT ON FOR PADDING. I JUST TAKE OUT OF THE DRYER WHILE IT HAS TURNED OFF, IMMEDIATELY AND FLICK THE LINEN, BLANKETS ON THE INSIDE OF DOOR TO REMOVE STATIC CLING. I KNOW HOW CATS CAN SUFFER FROM HYPERTHYROIDISM BC 2 HAVE DIED FROM IT EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE ON MEDICINE. HOPE THIS HELPS YOUR CATS.
You can use white vinegar in your rinse cycle, helps remove detergent residue and I think reducing static. Not a huge amount. My herd sheds about a cat a month, so static is not a friend!
I swear to my friends I am not a cat person but I am so wrong , after I owe 3 dogs , now I switch to cat, I regret not having a cat on early age of my life. Cats are an amazing animal , I now have 3 cats and I love them so much. I missed them when I am out , each of them have a different personality for sure.
This is true! They each have distinct personalities! I have 5 now inside, and 1 outside. I enjoy watching their interactions with each other! The more you love them, the more they love you! I too, always preferred my dogs.. I didn't really grow close to my cats until recent years after my last dog passed away. They keep me company and keep me going! I'm 69 and there's days i probably wouldn't get up if they weren't all sitting there, looking at me like, "well, it's about time!" ❤😂💦 😼😽😺😸😻💙
Interesting about the fresh water!!! I believe this goes for giving water for all your pets and children. I think it's good to scrub that water bowl every day or two with a little bit of soap to remove that slimy feeling that you feel after the bowls been used for a couple of days.
It's much better to buy a fountain for them I have six and was constantly dumping out n cleaning n filling the water bowl all day long . I actually would buy 4-5 cases of water a month for them. I was told about fountains b I bought one and they love it. .they get washed in their water bowl n would play in it too n it was causing constant messes .. now I buy one case of water a month n they now have a stainless steel fountain that they love. The filter n sponge catches all the hair n other stuff and refilling it constantly is so easy ... It's the best thing I've ever found..
You still have to clean a fountain just as often lmao the point of them is so your car is enticed to drink more water because they thing running water is fresher @@debbienikyniky
@@juniormondonos I recently bought separate water and food bowls for both my cats because at least one of them would get food in their water every day. Didn't change anything, still happens.
I thought I was doing pretty well with my babies, but I was able to learn a few things from this video. We absolutely need more playtime and I have to stop free feeding.
The tip about the laser pointer and leading them to where you've left the cat a prize for their natural effort to hunt and eat.I love it! Kitty will too!!❤ Thank you! All great tips!! Appreciated!!🎉
15: I have found that, with patience, building trust, and a bond, my cats LOVE being held like a baby, they relax, love being scratched around the face and ears....they feel secure and happy.
Yeah not all these points are accurate - certainly not for every cat. I totally agree on that one, my last cat loved to be cradled for a few minutes at a time. She also loved to have her face pet, to the point I could just mooshface her and she'd be eating it up. Silly thing. I miss her so much. 💔
As a cat mommy, I have realized how incredibly intelligent cats are. With dogs, if they’re doing something you want them to stop doing, you have to startle them to make any impact. But cats are so highly intelligent they understand our vocal communications. All I do is have a conversation and explain a few times like you would expect on a toddler and my cats will adjust their own behavior accordingly. ❤
This video makes me realize I’m a good cat owner for a first time pet owner. There’s a couple things I should change like laser pointer I’ve given him a small treat after, but I’ll start doing the toy thing too. Love this video
I totally agree with you! When my cat was alive, when I left the house, I left a light for him. But, a Russian "friend" who is overly conceited laughed at me, because she believed that cats could see everything in the darkness. She's so stupid. Cats can see things in a dim environment better than humans, but this doesn't mean that they don't need any light!
I miss my cat she just passed away. She would sleep in bed with me every night. My sister adopted her when she was a baby and I ended up keeping her for her whole life. I want to adopt a new kitty but my parents moved in to my house while they are getting their home remodeled and so I have to wait till they move back out. When they do I am going to the shelter to adopt a new kitty.
Did you get your kitty yet? My girl of 15 years passed away and I was broken. Have you considered adopting an older cat? I've adopted an 11 year old girl, it's not easy but hardly anyone wants a cat who is not a kitten and older cats are euthanased, it's horrible.
@@amethystfeathers7324 no i just got to wait till my parents move into their new house but yeah the reason i wanted a kitty this time is cuz the only two times ive had cats ive just adopted adult ones ive randomly come across. I just kinda want a baby this time that would last like many many years. Also never had a small kitty before.
This was an Informative video ! Thank you. We need a similar video for dog owners ! The key thing I would say to dog owners is : WALK YOUR DOG !! OFTEN !! They become sad and lethargic when they don’t get to socialize and WALK ! I’ve seen SO MANY dog owners who never walk their dogs. There should be a law !
i have this small problem and i can deal with it i know i can but there's a lot of ups and downs, i always feel the need to hug my cat when i just think about cats, or him, if i see him or i imagine unrealistic sad scenarios where he's hurt badly and wants help and i just can't stop wanting to show him my physical affection and im so clingy, of course not always, i hold myself back a lot but jeez even watching cat videos really makes me want to kiss his lil forehead and paws and hug him and make him feel loved, goddamn it i feel like a clingy mother i think the reason is that im the type of person who needs to express my love through physical touch like hugs and caresses and these days im so skeptical of everybody and i feel like only my cat would never ever betray me so in my brain its safe to display my love to him without feeling vulnerable or annoying, well yes i feel guilty sometimes so i chill down and let him walk up to me instead but then i don't understand where all of this is from, im never tired of my cat and its never enough hes just so precious and i must stop writing before cuteness overload happens again, i swear hes doing it on purpose
To be honest, I haven’t followed these rules the best, but I’m going to take better care of my cat. She deserves it. Also, the petting to hard thing makes sense, but my cat is often aggressive about rubbing her face on my hands. She presses really hard sometimes. Also, I know a lot of cats are very independent, but mine has to be around me constantly other than when she’s sleeping. She lays on my desk when I’m working or tries to share my office chair with me. When I sit or lay on my bed, she gets up and move right next to me. I usually wake up with her on top of me. I guess the point is not to force them to do anything. I never force her to be next to me. Sometimes she’s a little too clingy, but I really can’t complain. Anyway, great video. Thank you
My cats are a year and a half old. They love the laser pointer to the point that one of them pick it up so we can play. They know I'm controlling the laser but still love chasing it. Till they get bored.
My cat got so use to seeing mice in my house, he made friends with one of them. I heard a noise, and turned around to see a mouse eating out of his dish, and my cat was sitting next to him, watching. Lol!
It's also really important to know that every cat can have a more unique personality then just how playful they are, some "deeper" things than changing toys often (like even some instincts) can be the exact opposite for your cat
I agree. My current cat doesn't do most of the things my previous cats did. She doesn't like climbing up high, or getting in boxes and bags, or getting on the bed while the sheets are being changed. She meets me at the door and rolls over. We joke that she was a dog in a previous life. 😂 Cats are each very distinct personalities, and if we pay close attention we can figure out their preferences. She's a great pet though, and I wouldn't trade our relationship for the world!
5:37 I am really happy that you included this part about hownto pick up and not to use the scruff of there neck!! I see people do that and I always cringe at it. I barked at my sister for picking up my cat like that. I feel like my kitty isn't happy enough. So I plan to deploy some of these points.
We are looking after a friend's cat at present and he came to us in a really stressed condition. Regularising his feeding etc has made an immense difference, but he still attacks your leg, claws and biting when you walk away. We keep trying. !! 😾🐱
Last night I was thinking, cats are far more emotional than most people realize. It is very odd that this video showed up for me when it did though, even though I do watch a lot of cat videos. Not educational stuff like this though. But there is a lot I learned, so bravo. Now if only I could figure out why my cat meows so much when outside, while I'm outside with him.
I had a cat that would jump on the bed and get a pretty hard massage every night. If it was too much, she could have got away and jumped off the bed. But this kitty enjoyed it so much. She asked for that massage every night before I would fall asleep. She was my favorite little buddy. Acted more like a dog that a cat! ❤
@@marlenelindsey7638 the best idea - also has a filter so water us clean, filtered constantly - and moving! Which cats prefer. I have one ib my bedroom and it gives off a gentle light at night too. Win win! 😼💕
What great advice! I’ve had cats all my life (60+ years). Some of these took me many years to understand. New cat guardians! Read carefully and learn. You’ll have healthier, happier and friendlier cats. One additional advice ( unless I missed it) - cat food dishes should be flat - like a small platter. This is healthier for a cat’s whiskers. They’re very sensitive.
Cats also prefer their food and water be separated, as they are in the wild. And they love to find a glass of water somewhere they aren't expecting it. ❤
Thanks for sharing this @Feline Fanatics. Being a Cat Lover 😻 I've had many Cats throughout my 58 years, and I was always blessed with such caring playful (Good Kitties) "that never bit me or scratched me or attack me." And most of them loved to be held and petted and groomed, too. My last Momma Cat loved being held like a "Baby," and she even allowed me to dress her up for "Halloween." I was always showing my Cats lots of Love and Affection, and I was always Playing with them, that they were always so "Frisky and Playful" even into their older years... And they always loved being wherever I was (that if I was outside doing gardening or planting things, they would hang around me and jump into the freshly dugged dirt hole, and one of them loved sitting in my planter pots "killing off my plants." But I didn't scold her... And my Cats loved taking "Daily & Nightly Walks" with me (that my Neighbors had asked me how I trained my Cats to take Walks with Me) but I told them: "I didn't train them, they just love to be wherever I'm at... My last "Momma Cat" was so protective of Me, that if another Cat from our street walked into my yard, my "Momma Cat" would chase them away... But she was such a caring Kitty "that if another Male Cat pooped in my yard (and you know how most Tom Cats won't cover up their business to leave his scent behind to mark his territory), but my "Momma Cat," would always go over and cover up that Tom Cat's poop pile... 😸 "Hee-Hee." But I loved how my silly playful Cats would always inspect and check out what I was doing (especially, whenever I was outside putting out "Holiday Decorations," and my silly playful Cats would always have to rub up against all my outdoor decorations, to let me know that my "Holiday Decorations" passed their approval "but I know my Cats were rubbing their scent on things, too." 😸 "Hee-Hee." But it was too cute how my silly playful Cats would even jump up on the house roof "to play with my "Christmas Snowflake Icicle Lights," while I was trying to hang them up on the roof... I so miss all my beloved Cats (who are all up in "Kitty Heaven"). But someday I'll get me another Cat or two... 🐱🐱
The first time I saw someone use a laser pointer with a cat - it was cute at first, and the cat seemed to be having fun - but a very short time into it, I started to perceive it as "teasing" - and I could tell the cat thought so too. She just suddenly stopped and walked into a corner and started agitatedly cleaning her paws with her back to us. I said, "Oh, she's getting frustrated!" and my friend stopped and looked at me and realized it was true. There was no possible follow-through for the cat. She put the laser pointer away and only used it occasionally after that. Pointing it at a toy for the cat to pounce on is a great idea! But, personally, I won't use one at all. It's a game the cat can never win.
Hope this isn't a repeat, but my comment disappeared. The laser pointer was a HUGE fail with one of my 6-yr old boy cats. It just took him moments to see the pointer in my hand, and it was all he would look at. And I was even ready to set up a treat for the end of the play session.
Yea, my older male does really play, doesn't like lasers especially. My younger male,he will play w ANYTHING!! But he gets bored VERY easily!@@marykayhiggins8434
I taught my boy to love kisses of the head, and body hinge. When he was a kitten, I’d count to 3 and put him down when petting. After he learned he was free to leave, he relaxed and lets me cuddle whenever I want-as long as I respect his freedom when he’s ready to get down. And keep his tail free while offering body support. He’s a lover!
All great advice. My cat will come sit on me maybe once a day for 20 minutes. Most of the time he just wants to be near me not necessarily being petted.
Excellent video. This should be given to anyone adopting a cat 🐈⬛!!! So many people mistreat cats because they haven’t learned about them. Cats are so special and such a pleasure to share space with. Unlike dogs, you have to earn a cat’s affection and love. You hurt them……they don’t forget. 😿 I Have 4 and I love them all and they love me ❤❤❤❤❤❤
My cat loves the shallow clam shell bowl I use for his water. He can lap from the edge and so it gives him a good idea where the water is in relation to his face.
We've taken in cats who were aggressive who down the line turned kind and sweet with us. My mom also recently took in my brother's cats since he moved and the apartment wouldn't allow more than 1 animal, the change from one cat in particular with a nasty attitude was astounding and now I know why. I was afraid I was "breaking my cat's heart" but turns out my mom and I do a lot of things right lol. It's also weird cause now I look back at older friends who didn't like cats, and I see the way they have treated them, it's no wonder they didn't like the cats - the cats never liked them! lol.
This is something that new cat owners need to listen to, but I leave food out for my cats constantly, but if I ever see that they're getting fat that will stop. My cats hardly ever meow to me, they talk to me in Cat talk, the best I can describe it is chirping. Love on your Cat and your Cat will love you. And yes, do not, I repeat, do not rough play with your Kitty, because you will regret it, this is one reason why men hate Cats, they want to get rough with them, and then wind up with the cat whooping their ass.
NO NO NO. Free feeding is so bad and not just cuz they can get fat. Cats aren’t grazing animals, at least get a timed auto feeder since you use dry food plz.
My neighbor played rough with his kitten, basically mishandling her. Now, when he wants someone to cat sit, she plays aggressively, and this makes them want to avoid her.

My cat wants his litter box cleaned after every pee or poop. He hates the laser pointer. He figured out right away it was something he was never going to catch. He looked at me like, "You really think I'm falling for that." Threw it away.
Thank you! I had a cat that I loved ❤ her so much! She would put one paw on each of each my shoulders, then would put her head and give me a nudge. She would pure while doing me the whole time. I would give her a little nuge back when she did this, a little Love Nudge ❤
Thank you for this excellent video ! 😺 You cover so much I think it's possibly the best one I've seen. The clips of different kitties are wonderful, they're all unique and beautiful!😽
Thank you so much for the kind words! 😺 I'm thrilled you enjoyed the video and found it helpful. Those kitties sure know how to steal the show with their unique charm! 😽❤
thankyou SO much for talking about the laser toys - i wish they would get rid of them. my father played with his cat and would wear her out - he thought it was funny that she would jump way up the wall to not get anything. She had a heart attack when she was only 5 years old. I hate the things.
AGREED! Especially, STOP being lazy, using lasers (which irreparably damage all retinas). Animals are observably Frustrated. ALL ARE COMMON MISTAKES of longtime cat lovers, owners and health professionals!
@@Sharon-f3jI only recently learned about it, but at the same time she could have been in the upstairs sound asleep and I had had those in a drawer and if I touched it or picked it up to move it I would turn around and she would be right beside me meowing ready to go at it, and she only seemed annoyed when the battery would die.
Laser is frustrating for cats as they can never actually catch the light..they are highly intelligent animals they need mental ans physical stimulus.. failing to catch or touch the light frustrates them... small paper balls are more entertaining for them .. they can touch them .. play around with them like a soccer player
The laser phase lasted all of 5 minutes. He pretty soon realized that the laser was being controlled by my had and thereafter started attacking that when the laser came on.
My cat grew up around my nephews and niece, she started copying baby behaviour. Now I have to hold her like a baby. These rules I find from my cat is that are for a cat you control as a pet you have VS a cat that lives in your home
I agree that this video is genius! Please tell all your feline parents and friends to watch!! I am particularly sensitive as I lost two out of three of my cats in as many months!! I am sooo affectionate, but from now on I will pay attention to the detailed cat sensitivities discussed on this video. Thanks for showing us how to be wonderful cat-attuned parents!
Memories of my mother bringing home a dog that had been brought up with cats, sadly our resident cat wasnt aware of this and blew up to three times the size, hissing viciously as the poor dog tried not to look. After many years of the cat beating the crap out of the long suffering dog, they came to an uneasy truce, the cat snoozing on the dogs back, but lashing its nose when it moved due to cramp... And you thought your life was miserable.
Thank you for this information, very helpful now that i’m a cat parent , since i’m grew up taking care of dogs . Now i have adopted so many cats , learned so much . 👍
After my son moved out, I changed the litterbox. I observed one of my cats attempting to use the old one and he backed out, cringing and wrinkling his nose. I threw the whole box away and got a smaller one. I've been doing my best to clean it more often. I use metal dishes and two pottery dishes to feed my cats. I also wash them. After their morning meal, I pick up the dishes and at give them clean dishes for dinner. One of my cats loves snacking. He nips me when he wants a snack.
I broke my cat's heart when I took him to the vet. They took him away from me and tortured him. When they brought him back to me, he was mad and scared. He died as soon as I picked him up. I was in no position to react. I am dependent on a small town to live. I have to walk on eggshells all the time to survive. I miss him terribly. I cry for him a lot. My depression is a lot worse now.
@lorrieanneswan6509 I am so sorry! That sounds like such an awful experience. I bet you miss your boy very much! He is still with you... He is part of your soul! Sending love!
My 14 year old cat does not play too much and she always has food out she also shows me her belly at times for me to rub it. She also let me pet it if I want to out of the blue. I do wake her up at times to pet her and then she’s rest as she purrs. If my arm is near her paws and legs she will kneed me as she rest and purr too. She also sticks to me like glue. She also comes when I call. Happy too because she knows she gets petted and be around me.
My cat understands where the laser comes from and he brings me the laser pointer when he wants to play. I can't imagine he would do that if he didn't like it.
Okay holding them like a baby is def a personality trait. My young one LOVES to lay like this. She also loves to lay on her back & stretch (exposes her tummy constantly). I don't put her in these pos's, she does it herself.
I literally leave nightlights on and even cartoons on all day so they don't have to focus on every little sound ♡ I hold my cats in the most loving way. I hold them securely with my hand under their hind paws.. I think. Now I have to check. All I know is its proper, holding their butt. Im a good cat mom.. I have learned some through all the videos I watch but it mainly gives me a pat on the back because im already doing everything naturally correctly ♡ I didn't always though. I only had one cat, one litter box for 8 years. My daughter brought a tiny kitten home and the 2 did share a litter box, no problem.. I clean it every day, often twice. My cats do not mind. I now have 7 cats. 4 were from an abandoned litter under my shed of the house we just moved into. One is a disabled kitten we rescued. We have 3 litter boxes, 7 cats. I know its not enough but they only really use 2 out of 3. I am still going to get more. Im actually looking now.
You sound like an amazing cat mom! 😻 Leaving nightlights and cartoons on is such a sweet idea to keep them comfy. Holding them securely with a hand under their hind paws is perfect. 😊 And wow, seven cats! You're doing a fantastic job managing all of them, especially with the litter boxes. Adding more sounds like a good plan, but it’s clear you’re already doing a great job. ❤️🐾
So happy this is on here to teach people. 🙏 I’ve had animals all my life and respect and proper love and care comes naturally to me for our beautiful fur babies. ❤ Every one should think the same way before taking on an animal. Thanks again xxx
Id say most of this is accurate and great info! Exept my baby Ghost loves belly/chest rubs and nearly falls asleep when I hold him like a baby. He flops an arm out, shuts his eyes, and purrs and purrs. He flops over for me to rub his chest when its bed time too ❤
It’s hard to believe some (ignorant) people do any of these things. They are not in tune with their beautiful companion. This is just intuitive - most of it anyway and all of it to me. So relieved to learn I do none of these. Upsets me to see when people who know no better do some of these things. Great video :)
I literally just saw a thread on Facebook and people were arguing the fact that their cats did understand punishment like this One girl admitted that she spanked her cat when it ran across the highway nd I said your cat absolutely does not know. I mean maybe if you catch it in that very second but not even ten seconds later. You cannot control cats. You can keep them indoors.
@@Jamie-y8e haha cats are the best. I want a maine coon so bad ♡ One of my cats gets highly jealous. Always has since she was a kitten. She glares at me if I dont feed her first, pet her first.
On the subject of the toys I would say that quality not quantity is the key. Maybe 3 or 4 that they really enjoy and get plenty of fun out of, rather than having a dozen where you're cat simply isn't interested in half of them. So, take your time and choose their toys carefully. Good luck.
I adopted a cat from the road. It was fun how she became from wild to always being around me. I was upset when I had to leave her alone. She couldn't understand why I couldn't leave the door open so either she had to stay in the garden or in the house. Sure that gave her stress.
I feed my cats at any time they want to eat, and that's pretty often, but since they feed from the same plate, it's really small meals each time. However, twice a day, they get some roast chicken, cat treats, sticks, and biscuits. They know once I've had my morning coffee and go into the bedroom to get dressed, its treat time. They are sitting waiting for me outside the door. When 5 pm. comes around, they will get restless, and if I'm not aware of the time, they will tap me with their paws because its treat time again
They are greedy, spoilt narcissistic freaks. The more you feed the more they will eat..as a good vet, stop feeding loads different things, they will have you wrapped around their fingers..stick. To 1 type food.dry kibble best & feed -1-2 times a day
5-6 small meals throughout the day is actually better than two large meals (especially for neutered males.) it encourages them to urinate more often which reduces the likelihood of crystals in their urine/UTI's.

I got my cat a kitty water fountain and as soon as I turned it on kitty zoomed straight for it. I got plenty o cuddles later.
@@RobertWalker560587 so cute!
I use that too, came with a light on it, not sure how spring water got the filter dirty though
They Don last long either
They LOVE that fresh water! They really love a fountain.
I never forced my cat to cuddle with me. Whenever she wanted to leave, I let her go. Now I have a velcro cat. She jumps up on my lap and stays there as long as I let her. She follows me around the house a lot too. Preferring to be in same room I'm in. 😊
That's funny. The vet I used to work for had a client with a cat named Velcro, because he stuck to her so. 😅
I said " I TOLD YOU SO!!" Only three times in my life time(I'm 65)has the been such PERFECT TIMING!!!!
lol that’s so funny. I’m glad you were immediately proven right
What were the other two?
😮
The Dunning-Kruegger Effect in full display.
As a vet tech for 30 years, this is excellent information that I wish every cat parent would know!
Thank you .

Thank you
Sounds like one cat has you trained perfectly! 🤣

It's probably just playtime for her, especially if she's quite young.
If you cannot read your cat's signals, instinctively, go and get a dog!

Im not a cat expert but I have had 15 cats in my life as a kid and adult.
Yes biofilm I change it twice a day. It has to be rubbed out just just dumped and filled up again
Changing water in bowls is usually done everyday.. Everyday is the norm and that's what we do for our cats and figus as well as the water we keep for the street kitties outside..

We always had cats for pets because my Dad just loved them. I can remember my Dad teaching/showing me how to pick up a cat as a young girl.

Veterinary medicine professional here- This is one of very few lists of these things that is precisely accurate and it lists common misconceptions that aren't talked about often enough like:
scruffing (this can and does often cause irreversible, tragic injury and it ends their lives, stop doing it),
spraying with water and expecting them to react as a human would,
forcing them to be held or kept somewhere even if you have good intentions.
Along with everything else listed in this video, these tips are all valuable and spot on.
Well done!
So accurate. Also do not pull tail. Miss puss will not do what supposed to do if you spray them.

please, enlightn me "oh wise one", the fuck else am I supposed to do when I catch my cats doing shit they aren't supposed to? I don't smack them, I hate yelling because i know thats not doing anything but scaring them, the fuck else are you supposed to do when your cat is ripping open new loaves of bread 20 mintues after eating a can of soft food to themselves, or scratching furniture.
P.S. - I have 7 cats
Thanks for sharing I never knew that
You can use white vinegar in your rinse cycle, helps remove detergent residue and I think reducing static.
Not a huge amount.
My herd sheds about a cat a month, so static is not a friend!
Thank you. I never heard of this problem before.
Oh my gosh. I never knew!
We have already been trying to go as chemical free as possible.
But poor kitties! Even the blankets arnt safe!
I swear to my friends I am not a cat person but I am so wrong , after I owe 3 dogs , now I switch to cat, I regret not having a cat on early age of my life. This is true! They each have distinct personalities!

Interesting about the fresh water!!! I believe this goes for giving water for all your pets and children.
I think it's good to scrub that water bowl every day or two with a little bit of soap to remove that slimy feeling that you feel after the bowls been used for a couple of days.
It seems to build up super fast in hot weather 🤢yuk
Yup, get rid of the slime. Also change the water as soon as there are any food particles floating in the water.
Kitty will too!!❤
Thank you! All great tips!! Appreciated!!🎉
There were studies that showed cats were getting frustrated and then actually depressed from lazer pointers without rewards after! 😢
I love the fact that the narrator used the term "cat parent" and not the words "owner" ❤.
@ravipeiris4388 We know who owns who. I have 8 rescue cats and it's like running a nursery school!
Stop infantilizing cats and treating them as little humans. You're not respecting Rule #1. You're not its parent, you're its owner. Period.
@@BouitazDogs have owners, cats have staff. Fact.
It's stupid
I also like the term "cat guardian" per Jackson Galaxy.

Oh no. I hope you get over it okay...
Condoleances for your sweet cat. I hope you will find a new furry friend as soon as possible
And your parents should not be in the way to get a new cat. Tell them to stay in the other room is they don't like your new kitten
My persian cat is such a gentleman, he's always so calm and loving and always a good boy ❤

i have this small problem and i can deal with it i know i can but there's a lot of ups and downs, i always feel the need to
hug my cat when i just think about cats, or him, if i see him or i imagine unrealistic sad scenarios where he's hurt badly and wants help and i just can't stop wanting to show him my physical affection and im so clingy, of course not always, i hold myself back a lot but jeez even watching cat videos really makes me want to kiss his lil forehead and paws and hug him and make him feel loved, goddamn it i feel like a clingy mother
i think the reason is that im the type of person who needs to express my love through physical touch like hugs and caresses and these days im so skeptical of everybody and i feel like only my cat would never ever betray me so in my brain its safe to display my love to him without feeling vulnerable or annoying, well yes i feel guilty sometimes so i chill down and let him walk up to me instead but then i don't understand where all of this is from, im never tired of my cat and its never enough
hes just so precious and i must stop writing before cuteness overload happens again, i swear hes doing it on purpose
don't eat catnip
@ i am clean since today morning i promise
update: not anymore
Mine is obsessed with it, I sorta wish I had never show it to her
My cat got so use to seeing mice in my house, he made friends with one of them. I heard a noise, and turned around to see a mouse eating out of his dish, and my cat was sitting next to him, watching. Lol!
I love kitties SO MUCH.
I just cannot get enough!
Almost spot on but the holding, butt to elbow resting on arm head in my palm, they love that if they feel secure/protected.
Great channel. I have six cats myself, they're all related and live inside. It's such a joy to have them in my life.
We are looking after a friend's cat at present and he came to us in a really stressed condition. Regularising his feeding etc has made an immense difference, but he still attacks your leg, claws and biting when you walk away. We keep trying. !! 😾🐱
Jumping at your leg can mean it wants to play. Maybe try that?
All GREAT tips for owning a healthy well adjusted kitty. Thanks for the lessons!
Genuinely pleasantly surprised to find all the info here correct and well explained for those new to feline care.

My cat tells me when he wants fresh water. He stands by his water dish and looks at me. I always wash his water dish.
@@marlenelindsey7638 the best idea - also has a filter so water us clean, filtered constantly - and moving! Which cats prefer. I have one ib my bedroom and it gives off a gentle light at night too. Win win! 😼💕
absolutely- twice a day at least... more if anything gets into the water
How old was your cat(s) when you introduced them to the water fountain? Did you do anything special to entice them to use it? Any advice appreciated.
❤😂
😿 I Have 4 and I love them all and they love me ❤❤❤❤❤❤
"Cats are fiercely independent"
Please tell that to my cat.
Ditto 😂
Absolutely
oh I bet your cat already knows but just chooses to let you believe what you believe so it doesn't have to do sh*t. XD
I love my cats to bits. ❤
Now, when he wants someone to cat sit, she plays aggressively, and this makes them want to avoid her.

thankyou SO much for talking about the laser toys - i wish they would get rid of them. my father played with his cat and would wear her out - he thought it was funny that she would jump way up the wall to not get anything.
Thank you for letting me know about lasers i don't have one now but i have in the past.
Their eyes will be fine if you don't point it at them
Laser is frustrating for cats as they can never actually catch the light..they are highly intelligent animals they need mental ans physical stimulus.. failing to catch or touch the light frustrates them... small paper balls are more entertaining for them .. they can touch them .. play around with them like a soccer player
The laser phase lasted all of 5 minutes. He pretty soon realized that the laser was being controlled by my had and thereafter started attacking that when the laser came on.
My cat grew up around my nephews and niece, she started copying baby behaviour. Now I have to hold her like a baby.
These rules I find from my cat is that are for a cat you control as a pet you have VS a cat that lives in your home
definitely going to try the one with playing before feeding! other pointers feel natural to me being an experienced cat owner. that one is a new idea
Thank you for this vid. Still learning to be a better cat dad. Will be changing litter and bowls way more regularly now
I agree that this video is genius!
😢 sorry to hear that...I pray for your wellbeing ❤
This will help me to take care of my cat in a better way, thank you!
My cat understands where the laser comes from and he brings me the laser pointer when he wants to play. I can't imagine he would do that if he didn't like it.
This is the best cat video I've seen online.

I've had cats for many years, but this video is the best I've seen about understanding cats. Thank you!
I always hide little treats around the house then have them chase the Lazer pointer to the treat.
My cat forces me to pet him violently, he walks himself into my hands aggressively asking for more lol
These things may or may not apply to every cat.
Im glad to learn that my cat is probably not sad.
My cats prefered to use the same same litterbox. don't ask why, i have no idea... Good video.

2:27 😅😊😅
You're spot on. No spanking ever. I literally had to suck up to Scooby my Maine Coon after looking at him wrong....😂😂😂not kidding
@@Jamie-y8e haha cats are the best. I want a maine coon so bad ♡ One of my cats gets highly jealous. Always has since she was a kitten. She glares at me if I dont feed her first, pet her first.

No , we cat owners believe you. We've all been there!
My own cat gives me his belly many times in a run of a day. 😸 😸 😸 ❤ ❤ ❤.
1:01 ( I have never even thought of using a laser! )
My kitties are grazers too
😊😊
They are greedy, spoilt narcissistic freaks. The more you feed the more they will eat..as a good vet, stop feeding loads different things, they will have you wrapped around their fingers..stick. To 1 type food.dry kibble best & feed -1-2 times a day
5-6 small meals throughout the day is actually better than two large meals (especially for neutered males.) it encourages them to urinate more often which reduces the likelihood of crystals in their urine/UTI's.
