Ever since I was a very little girl, my dream cat was solid black with avocado green eyes. I grew up with a wonderful, amazing black spaniel type dog for almost 18 years, but wasn't allowed to have a cat. Then, many years later, one hot August night, I was walking my current dog, when I heard the most pitiful mewing. I put Katie, my dog back in the apartment, grabbed a flashlight, thinking a kitten must be stuck up a tree. Nope, a young black cat was at my upstairs neighbor's door, crying his heart out. I said: "What's the matter baby, won't they let you in?" Next thing I know, a blur of cat runs down the balcony, down the stairs, and launches himself into my arms, snuggles in, and starts purring like a motor boat! Surprise! My heart melted completely, my brain said you can't have a cat, you already have a dog and a cockatiel! So, that night I fixed him a bed in a box with cat food I had on hand for the cat at work, and some cool water under the stairs near my apartment. That had to do for then, but not forever, since you don't look a cat you had wanted for 45 years, in the face and say no...I did some inquiring to make sure he didn't belong to someone. Turned out the poor guy had been kicked out of a car on the opposite side of the complex 3 weeks before. He had been searching for just that special new Momma at every single door, receiving food and water along the way, until that truly magical moment when we came together. I considered him an incredibly special gift from God, one I had been waiting so many years for! He met my car after work the next day, and he became my sweetest little boy, sleeping in my lap most of the evening, purring contently. I tried many different names, but when I said "Salem" he looked at me and smiled! 😮😊❤ Next day, while he got checked over at my vet's office, they found out he had already been neutered, blood tests were all fine, updated his vaccines, Revolution drops, etc. and I got cat supplies, toys, and stuff- I gleefully gave myself a "kitten shower!" We got to spend 13 glorious but way too short years together. He, my dog, and cockatiel were all good friends- no worries there! My green-eyed, short-haired, solid black cat 🐈‍⬛️, turned out to be the sweetest, most caring, loving cat that ever was made, he never, ever scratched me or gave "love bites." He slept close every night. I guess the most magical gift he still gives me even 10 years after his passing, is that he will visit me in the night to bring me love and comfort, especially when I need it. I know that people who know black cats know they can do this when they really love you ❤. The visits are not as common as they were at first, but I can see, hear, and feel him- it gives me joy and I have no doubt at all who will be jumping in my arms, purring like a motor boat when I finally join my human and animal family in Heaven! God bless you and yours!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
P.S. the illustrated children's book about Salem's Adventures will eventually be appearing everywhere they sell books 📚 LOL someday!!!

I adopted a black cat four years ago and my grandma, who is now 99, started telling me all about the black cats she used to have and how they were the most promiscuous 🤣🤣 I have no idea where she got that, but she had me rolling.

    • @walterfechter8080
      @walterfechter8080 10 месяцев назад +26

@@errantwinds-up8uu I had to laugh at what your grandma said about black cats being "the most promiscuous." All cats have their little "quirks" as we humans do. I don't know about my black cats being "promiscuous," but they certainly were mischievous, sweet and charming. In Scotland, a tradition was that a newly married husband gave his new wife a black cat for good luck. All of my grandmother's black cats brought her good luck. Strangely enough, my gran's black cats knew when German bombers were approaching London even before the air raid sirens started. Shortly after The Blitz began, my grandmother moved from London to Bromley (Kent) with all her belongings (including her cats). My gran and her cats were relatively safe there. Cats: it seems; have a sixth sense that is akin to the supernatural. With care. Cheers -- W

When my mom and I went to a shelter a few years ago we were looking for a young kitten to adopt, and there was this 8 year old black kitty named Charlie who looked sad and wasn't interacting with anybody. We found out he had been at the shelter the longest and no one wanted him, so we got him and he is the happiest boy. His previous owners abandoned him so he has separation anxiety so I'm basically his emotional support human. We also ended up adopting a tuxedo kitten with ADHD to keep him company so he isn't as anxious anymore. They're both the best kitties ever.

I always got positive reviews from landlords when I needed to move. What my landlords didn't know is I only said I had 3 black cats when in reality I had six. It dawned on me that only I could tell the difference between my babies. And my cats tended to not be all in one spot at one time. This worked well for me.

A young stray black cat - about 6 months old, walked into my yard one day. He never let me get closer than about 15 feet. So, I just went about my business in the yard for the afternoon and he watched. I would speak to him, but he would not speak back ;-) When I finally called it a day and went into the house. When I came back into my family room I was surprised to find that the little black cat had climbed onto the deck and was looking through the screen door. I opened the screen door, he walked in and he never left. 20 years I had him. One of the best pets I have ever had. Beautiful black coat, black paws, black nose - sleek like a panther and extremely affectionate and loyal right to he very end. Black cats are GREAT. 🙂🙂👍👍

She had been brought into a Los Angeles County animal shelter branch, then taken to south Orange County adoption fairs, and subsequently to the adoption fair at Petco in Anaheim, the city where I live. I have several cats, so I'm not prepared to adopt at the drop of a hat. The day I saw Queenie, I promised her that if no one adopted her, I would by a specific date. I began saving up for her, and the day before that date, I walked out of that Petco with my special black cat girl.

It makes my blood boil how discriminatory we are not just against people of other color, but towards animals or certain colors.
It was a black shelter cat that turned me into a cat lover. He was SO gentle and was the perfect buddy for me to learn how to hold a cat, and start to enjoy the company of a cat. He never scratched, never hissed, he was basically like a pillow. No matter what you try to do with him - lift him, hold him like a baby, put him on your shoulder, he's just calm and collected. I wanted to adopt him but he passed before I was able to move into a pet-friendly apartment.
I now do TNR on my own as well as work with street feeders in other cities. I have my own 6 cats and have managed to make cat people out of my 4 family members, and they're now caring for 7 cats. And all that because of an encounter with a black cat 5 years ago.
Had it been a calico or a ginger that I first interacted with (more sassy personalities), who knows?
my parents now have 2 black cats, mom and son. But mom doesn't like her own son lol. Son is a timid scaredy boy and mom is as loyal as a dog, following my mom wherever she goes and screaming at her when she thinks my mom has gone past the "safe" zone lol
All the black cats I've interacted with have been gentle individuals. ALL OF THEM. So I really don't understand the bias. It must be because of discrimination based on looks. It sucks. Humans suck.

I have 5 cats, and everyone always remarks on the black cat, Darryl. The other one, Mr. B, is more of an outdoor adventurous type. The two of them together gang up on my female cats (two tabbies and a torty). I don't think it's serious. More like a dysfunctional family. They always greet each other with nose kisses before starting in with the hissing and chasing. Mr. B has white paws. He likes to lie down on something black (like a suitcase or a garbage bag). He'll tuck in his white paws and he becomes invisible. Never a dull moment.

I adopted two black cats that were abandoned.
When I went to look for cats, black was not the colour I had in mind, but these two were so cute and tiny that they melted my heart.
I had those cats for over 13 years, they completely changed my mind about black cats.

Way back in 2005 when I was 19 years old, I had gone through a mental health crisis and was hospitalized for suicidal behavior. My therapist suggested I adopt a pet as part of my therapy plan, she thought it would be good for me to focus my time and energy on caring for something.
I was living with my parents at the time and was a bit limited on what type of pet I could adopt. I went to the nearest shelter and was looking around at the animals there, I was pretty certain that I was going to adopt a cat, they've been a major part of my family life throughout my childhood.
At the shelter the staff showed me the litters of kittens they had, they said they go quickly so recommended I pick one out sooner rather than later. In one of the rooms they had a solid black cat and a solid white kitten. I asked if it was a mother cat and her kitten and they said no, they both were kittens and unrelated but had similar temperaments so they were paired together.
The black one was a boy and he was huge, despite them estimating that he was only 5 months old. The staff at the shelter said the little white girl kitten would likely be adopted soon but that he was unlikely to be adopted because he was so big and black, and would likely be euthanized. So, needless to say, I adopted him and he lived a pampered and lavish indoor lifestyle for about thirteen years before passing from treatment resistant urinary tract issues.
In terms of how people treat cats here in the midwest part of the USA, many people see them as uncontrolled pests, no matter what color they are. Young men especially tend to find joy in running them over when possible, or shooting them, as if it is some kind of game. They would never do such things to dogs and would think it criminal, yet their bias keeps them from seeing their own barbaric behavior.
Feral cat populations are certainly a problem, no one is arguing against that, but there are more humane ways to controlling populations and controlling the spread of diseases between those populations than using cruelty and violence. For example there is a local vet clinic that will vaccinate, spay, or neuter any feral cat you can trap and bring in at a low cost.

I had a black cat and I was her only human. 9 pounds of pure fury. Her mom was a black domestic shorthair and her father was a feral black Persian mix. Never backed down to anything. Lived to be 22, traveled the US, lived in Germany for 15 months, Colorado, Texas, Florida and Wyoming. My son got a cat that looked just like her with an even worse attitude. I love black cats and they have wonderful personalities and are so affectionate. There was a family of black cats who were strays in our neighborhood that we rescued and we had the older father cat, his daughter and a son. We could tell by their affection with each other that they were very close. The oldest was starting to have some gray hairs in his fur. His daughter, Bev, we brought in first because she was pregnant. Next came her father Magic and as soon as he came in the door, he ran to Bev and started washing her head. They were always together. Salem had been with Magic, and we were able to bring him in the next day in the humane trap. So, all cats went to the vet, Magic was already "fixed", so apparently he was an abandoned cat, Bev had her kittens and we kept 3 and our vet adopted out the other 3 at his adoption center. Salem was neutered and Bev spayed, once she was done nursing. And the 3 kittens, Socks, Saffron and Sage were all spay/neutered. That had been many years ago, and Saffron is the last surviving cat of the family. All the cats lived long lives, but Sage died the youngest at 12, due to cancer. They were all wonderful cats and very affectionate.

I heard about Persian Rescue Service , which had a stunning 3 yr old black Persian. I was told he failed the 1st 2 placements, but decided to take risk. My environment was very different from other placements, I’m a retired Senior, I lived alone with no other pets. I am also intrigued by witches and black cats. I’ll never forget first holding the cat and how he snuggled up, purring and rubbing his cheek against mine😂❤. He is the friendliest cat ever! He will greet visitors, sit and observe conversation, and even engage with company. He is very clean, housebroken critter.

I was owned by 2 black cats. Best cats i ever knew in my life. They grew up in the country to a loving mother till they were around 3 months old. Being siblings (1 male/1 female) - they taught each other how to wrestle, fight and respect. Big puss and little puss were their names. The male - being a wonderer - charismatic and confident rogue - you'd often find him lying in the middle of the side-walk, scamming pats from passerby pedestrians. The female - very much a homely cat. Often felt early in the morning, sneaking next to your legs on while you sleep. Or under the blankets, soaking up that warmth.

I've always been more of a dog person, but due to my work schedule, getting a cat seemed like a better choice. My black and white cat chose me. She rubbed up on me constantly in the adoption center's cattery. I made sure she was on hold for me until I could pick her up. She now naps on me twice a day and sleeps by my head at night.
I have never lived with an animal that didn't have at least half their fur colour as black and I absolutely love that fact. Now it's a life long goal.

A little over a year ago, we suddenly lost a Siamese to pancreatitis. We went through and tried many of the "Rescue" groups, and the filtering process was disheartening. So we found a Siamese (we like their talkative nature) at a not-so-close county shelter. As we arrived for our appointment, a young family was leaving with the Siamese we went to visit. Not wanting to abandon the search, we went to visit other candidates. There was one, a large, adult, black, male that latched on to us, and was talking to us at every turn. He was in no way what we were looking for (non Siamese, big, male, adult, and black), but over the past year, he has proven to be the best companion I've had in my 60+ years of having cats... Only downside, he's hard to photograph...

We have had 5 black cats since the first one in 1976. Our black cat Linus is lean and lanky and, if he's awake, he's talking! He hasn't been genetically tested and he was picked up as a stray, so we have no idea what his parentage is but we're thinking there is some Siamese in his background. I agree that photographing a black cat is difficult but I have had a little success. What works for me is not using the flash but having good light coming from further away behind me.

To be clear, most of the time, it's far harder to shoot a black subject, indoors, in low light, w/o a flash, than say a light colored subject... Add to that, cellphones have only recently started to attempt to address the topic, so most "candid" shots are... well less than "good enough" IMO. My neighborhood has had a huge spike in the feral colony since 2020; people have turned their cats out, many literally moving/ leaving them behind to fend for themselves, it is heartbreaking. It is my experience that the other color cats are adopted & the beautiful black kittens are left behind.. we've literally placed 30+ kittens and only 1 black kitten. Ending with me foster-failing.. & then they live with me forever ♡ .. hence my herd growth in last four years. There is a small band of neighbors who catch, fix & home those we are able. But it is an uphill battle to feed & watch over so many - indoors & outdoors. Our shelters do not take cats.. so very thankful to those who open their hearts, homes & finances to help out!

She gave me a black kitten when I was young. He lived to be twenty and died when I was in my mid-twenties. He had been with me for most of my life. The loss was devastating. People who don't have pets don't understand the bonding on both sides, between human and animal. Pets are companions. They're friends. They aren't "just an animal", as is the attitude of many who can't appreciate the gifts that animals are to us, usually because they've never experienced the companionship a pet provides. Yes, when you have to have one put down for some reason, it really, REALLY hurts! It's losing a loved one, just as the death of a beloved person is losing a loved one. I've cried many times when veterinarians have told me their is nothing they can do for my cat, and the kindest thing is to have him euthanized. Yes, it's the right thing to do in some cases, but golly, that DOESN'T make it any easier!
Do cats go to heaven? Why not? It's certainly possible, and I think a loving God understands how happy our companion animals make us, and would include our continued relationship with our pets as part of the rich love and total bliss we would have there. It's up to God, of course, but in heaven we would need nothing and want for nothing, so I believe that means our pets shall be there for us. Just my belief, but it's heartfelt.

The female Onyx is our naughtiest cat but she is also so sweet. The male Obsidian is our nose licker and is also very sweet.

When our black cat, Murphy, was an outdoor cat, he contracted ring worm. Ring worm is not a worm at all but rather a mite infestation. I dosed him with oral Ivermectin and it cured him. His hair grew back and he was no longer tired and sick, he became healthy and beautiful. Please read my comments about Murphy in former comments.

Only problem I had with my black cat..when she was around 15 or so she started sleeping in random places, like the middle of the living room floor, or right in the doorway or hallway. My house was kind of dark with dark carpeting..at night when we'd be walking around our house we had to really look for her. We all walked around her and let her sleep. Sometimes I'd put a white sock or something next to her so my kids wouldn't miss her😂 (as she got old she didn't want to be picked up and moved).

I am in animal rescuer/ foster and I currently have three black cat fosters. The more I foster the more I realize how amazing black cats are. They are truly my favorite now, and the fact that they have this horrible stigma is literally heartbreaking. And yes in fact it is true that they are the most euthanized and harder to adopt color in cats. I’ve unfortunately had kittens that have grown up to be for adults with no interest for anyone to adopt them. So I encourage you if you were wanting to adopt a kitten, adopt a black cat they Will truly change your life. I currently have five black cats that are my personal cats and I love them beyond words.

Mine found me as a kitten, I was feeding her outside and providing a safe space for her to eat and stay. After about a week she decided to follow me inside the house and 2 years later she's a happy and healthy indoor black cat. I absolutely love her and the fact that she chose me makes me feel so special. Cats are a gift to us all and are amazing!

I love black cats. Unfortunately a lot of the outside black cats that we have had did disappear at young ages😢 as compared to the other ones. Playing with a black cat is so much fun because in my experience, they jump higher and uncontrollably than other cats we’ve had. Which has lead to some hilarious playtime. I love cats so much!

My daughter and her roommate bought rabbits off of a breeder and was given a black cat because they were getting rid if the left-over kittens after selling what they could.😢
He is a huge cat at 12 months old and still growing. He is chill and loves his people.
He walks on a leash with a harness, goes camping and even paddle boarding.
He plays a little too hard with the other cats. He can't help himself. He is enthusiastic about everything!❤

Our black cat (Ben..Handsome Ben) is 14 years old. We are a family of 3 and wouldn't be without him. A few years ago he disappeared for 3 months. He returned from the woods a bit wild. But the reunion was awesome. He has always been an indoor and outdoor cat. He wouldn't have survived 3 months in the woods without his claws! He came back to us a bit wild but eventually settled back to his routines with us (my husband and I). We are truly a little family. I would not have chosen a black cat but we are so glad we ended up with Benny Boy.
