I adopted a senior cat who'd been brought into a shelter as a stray. I have never known a more affectionate and loving cat. We only had him for two years before he passed, but we provided so much love for eachother during that time. Miss him every day ♡

That is an awesome commitment! I was born into a family with a senior cat (he was 8-11 years older than me, I think), and I also miss him every day. He passed some months after turning 21.
I'd love to adopt one day, never buy! I do want to provide a home to the cat that needs it most, and that includes senior cats. Do you have any tips for adopting a senior kitty? Is it a good idea to get a senior as a first-time owner? Please share your experience and expertise =)

@@thedolphinqueen9921 , with a senior cat, if the shelter did the neuter, that is a red flag. I had thousands of dollars in urinary tract problem cost, come, because they had neutered an adult cat, and not done it right (maybe expecting he was not adoptable, using the surgery as training, for a new doctor or something. ) . We had him over a decade, so he had a good life: but his getting 'stopped-up' every other year was ... not convenient. I think he was full grown, and less than 3 when we adopted, so not 'senior'.

I’m an accidental cat mom...I found my kitten meowing in a trash can while coming back from work. I just picked her up on a reflex & brought her home. No preparation & absolutely no idea...I didn’t even know I was a cat person. I’ve grown up with dogs. 6 years down the line I can’t believe I’ve never had a kitty before. Now I’m rescuing kitties & being a rather tiresome kitty advocate, much to the amusement of my friends.

Jackson reinforces the truth about being prepared financially. I have seen many situations where yes, food, water, litter is afforded..but when a medical issue comes up..no $$$, either because no pet insurance is financially doable, or no extra $$$ set aside under that mattress. Lives have been lost. At least be able to take your pets for an annual exam every year. Oh, and be able to get flea/tick meds too. I can't afford a kitty properly because of this vital requirement. Until I can, no adoption. I am glad Jackson addressed this right out of the gate.

Thank you for being so responsible. I did an internship at a vet once and a family came in with a cat that had run away and gotten her leg stuck in a fence. It was really bad. They had to choose between amputation and euthanasia. The cost for the amputation was pretty high, somewhere between 1000€ and 2000€ I think. The dad felt they should put the cat down, that the cost was too high and it wasn't worth it to have a disabled cat. But the child and mother were heartbroken and crying. Luckily this story had a happy ending and they agreed to the amputation with a payment plan over 12 months, but this really gave me a reality check. If that had been my cat, I would've had to put her down. Costs can always come up, unexpectedly and in large amounts, so again, thank you for being so responsible

Easy to say, but this isn't allowed during quarantine. You have to choose from profiles at most, if not all, shelters right now. Also, a cat acts much different at home than they do at a shelter. Some cats are very shy at first, but become very loving once they trust you.

My boy Fredward sorta hitched a ride on my dad's friends truck all the way from Florida, to North Central Iowa, and conveniently escaped out the window onto my dad's acreage property just a couple weeks before I came to visit. And he just kept rubbing up against me and sitting with me when I was outside and I'm like.... Awww...! He thinks I am his friend....!! So I had a week or two to think it over and im like, "welp! This is life now!" And so he hitched a ride with me all the way from Iowa to Colorado! It was a looooong time adjustment, he was very used to being a friendly outdoor cat, and he still really misses outside, but jacksons videos were REALLY a life saver!! For the first few months I had him he would NOT LET ME SLEEP!!! I was almost considering rehoming him, but jacksons videos really gave me some great insight on how to meet my boy half way! So now he has a cat tree by the window, and giving him a specific space to look out the windows around the house was a big help, so he can watch them birds!! He's got interactive toys that can tire him out (that feather wand is INCREDIBLE) also when I got him he was SO FLIPPIN FAT HE WAS LIKE 19 POUNDS I KID YOU NOT!!!! But now I'm feeding him wet food twice a day and he's like 16 or 17 pounds now with regular play, and hopefully still going down with regular play. Still trying to get him comfortable in a harness and a backpack because he loves outside so much. It's been a huge journey but he can give me high fives now! 😃 Hopefully progress will continue! And I'm considering getting him a friend in the future to help keep him company.

If you are allergic, get a short hair, because when the summer kicks in the long hair type sheds way too much, which on me gives me slight allergies in the summer only.

We adopted my grandmother’s cat when she died a couple years ago. It was already 18 at the time and was very scared of kids, which I just happened to classify as. He died a couple of months later, if not weeks if I remember correctly, but in those days, he was the most affectionate and lovable old baby I ever could have wanted.

3 days ago since my Simba died from a tumor and heavy disease I was devastated. I searched for his pictures and heard a cry across my window, I went out on the street and saw baby kitty girl crying for help. Of course, I had to call her Nala, and today we made our first vetenarian visit ♥ No joke, this really happened. I even gave her back to neighbours and they asked me to take care of her, to that I couldn't say no.

I completely agree with you. I adopted a 10.5 year old domestic cat about 2 months ago. I couldn't have asked for a better companion. From the moment I met him in the shelter he immediately jumped on my lap and made himself comfortable. I took him right home and within four hours he was strutting around like my apartment was his. I love this guy so much!

I'm adopting a 7 year old shy little lady who's never lived along side humans before. I'm not expecting any miracles here, but if I'll be able to give her a little scratch behind her ear at some point in the future I'll be absolutely thrilled. I'm mostly hoping that I'll be able to provide her with a safe home for the rest of her life :) And in return I'll get some company in my flat as I live my little life.

About cat energy: I adopted my cat 11 years ago from a friend's house/farm. They had a litter of 5, three of which were females. I wasn't allowed a male (don't ask me, idk either) so I had to pick one of the three girls. They all had very different energy. One of them was really scared and hiding the entire time, one was super sweet and cuddly, she wanted to be picked up and was purring in my sister's lab through the entire process. My family urged me to pick that one. But I didn't. I didn't care because I had already decided. When we first arrived, the third little girl was drinking some milk with her brother and she dipped her paw in and shook it so her brother got all wet. She spent the entire time running around like crazy, jumping on things and the only attention she gave us was scratching at our legs. I immediately fell in love and took her home, with my family a bit disappointed. She was high energy for about 7 years, hunting, jumping at people, always up on the table. Now she's more relaxed and let's everyone pet her. I have no regrets, I love that cat to death.

We are bringing in two kittens in a couple of weeks. Our last cat passed away at 1.5 years old from an unknown respiratory illness. It was terrible to watch her suffer. She passed on her own terms, which I was very glad for because she melted into a nervous puddle when she went to the vet.
We are hoping we can provide a home to these kittens for a very long time to come, and I am refreshing my mind on how to introduce new cats to their forever home. Very excited for our new arrivals.

I met a kitten on Saturday and thought I was sold, then met another on Sunday and he immediately began purring for me and rubbed on my arm and basically adopted me. He wasn’t my first choice (the adoption page listed him as female too) but as soon as I met him I knew he was the one. I spent an hour with the first kitten, trying to get to know her, and only ten minutes before I made my decision with my boy now. Best decision I ever made, and my first kitten!

my 3rd adopted cat came home 4 days ago....we are making progress over here. :)
told the shelter to show me the most difficult cats they had, regardless of age, gender, coloring or race. my only rule was that the new family member must be on similar wave length as my 2nd adopted cat, who is a very shy girl and a perfect scardy cat.
my 1st adopted cat and love of my life, was 10 when we met, one kidney and chronic cough.
the finance thing is spot on though. I took out a loan to cover all of her medical cost when she had cancer.
my beautiful cat is gone for 3 years now but the loan I still pay off.
I have no regrets at all and would do it again in a heart beat. yet the money aspect is definitely deadly important.
yet in the end of the day we have had 6 beautiful years together, which is priceless to me, because she is one the best thing I have ever done! I miss her every day. :)

We foster cats so that they don’t have to go into shelters and I’ve often given the new furrparents some of your tips and refer them to your channel for other stuff. Your channel is great! Our current foster found a hidey hole that I hadn’t picked up while closing unders and it took me three weeks before she’d come out. She now comes to me when I call her (or hears my voice). She struggles with my boyfriend though (his really tall, and has a deep booming voice), but we usually use our fosters’ comfort around him as signal that they’re ready to be adopted.

We (me and my roommate) didn't adopt a cat but we rescued a cat: a week ago we found a deaf, disoriented cat in the woods (on the active train tracks!), and we took him home. We hung the posters around, and the owner was found but she said that she was looking for a new home for him anyway as she was moving out soon, and the cat can stay with us. So now we have a cat! He is a white british shorthair (he has an actual pedigree) and today (21.06) is his 6th birthday! Last week I took him to the vet for check up and FIV/FELV tests (they came out negative!) and next week we're gonna go for vaccinations. Crazy how fate works, but now Szynka is at our place and we're looking forward for many more years with him (and maybe another cat so he doesn't feel alone when we're at work, but that's future plans :')). Thank you Jackson! Most of my cat knowledge comes from your shows, videos and books, you are a wonderful person, Szynka sends you purrs :)

I just adopted my 7th cat lol. We named his Jack Jack. I tried adopting a kitten off a “Facebook Rescue”. SMDH. Never again. I’ve fostered dozens of animals and this woman angered me. She lied about everything. He was sick off his ass. Bloody stools. Malnourished. Cold body temps. Lethargic. Low blood sugars. I tried and tried to save him, and spent hundreds on him at the vet, But he died in my arms a few hrs later gasping for air. I recommend 100% going to a shelter. I found a beautiful male Snowshoe Siamese, 17 weeks old, Fully vetted. Microchipped, neutered, dewormed, flea meds etc. for like $25. He’s a little love bug and completes our large cat family circle of crazies. 🎉💋

Good summary. I recently processed a study and what was striking me is the health insurance part. As you well mentioned, you literally can insure everything with the right plan. What i found is that most breed specific diseases are excluded from the general policy provided. I would recommend to everyone adopting a cat doing also the research on these breed specific diseases and think about including it in the policy (or as you mentioned, stuck the money into the pillow to get prepared). 🙂

How scary for her to be out there with no defenses. She was black with filth and when I took to cleaning her, she was a beautiful white Persian. I don't know how long she was living outside but we had 12 beautiful years and she was definitely the key to unlocking my heart! She slept on my pillow every night and would bring me gifts. He was just about 8 months old at the time. He adjusted well (meaning we adjusted well). He's just about three years old now. The shelter told us that he had been abandoned in a city park, and someone brought him into the shelter. He had been there just a couple of weeks when he chose us. I never really asessed any of their personalities, but all but one were great from the start. One hadn't been socialized properly and was crazy with energy to the point where some days I could barely stand it, but when he got to be about 6 months old he mellowed out considerably and developed a wonderful personality. I also before I got my 2 year old cat took in my great grandma’s elderly cat when she passed away the cat was 19 and she was the sweetest most attention loving cat I ever met I had her for about a year before she passed and she left the biggest impression on me of what a cat can truly be like.

When I held my baby girl for the first time it just clicked. She has feline leukemia and she had been at that shelter for a month after being transferred from a different shelter. Once I got her home she took less than 8 hours to get used to my studio apt and jump up onto the bed with me. God I love her so much

I adopted a cat during this quarantine!!! A furever family member ❤️ I can now look back at the quarantine moving forward and see good in it because I got to reconnect with my family and seal the deal on bringing in a whole new fluffy member of it! 😃

My husband found a kitty at 5am this morning and couldn't let it go to the shelter. Vet appointment in a few days but here we are..a 2 year old Japanese Chin and this one.
I haven't had a kitten since a teenager and now I'm learning on a fly!
    Thanks for these videos!

I adopted a bengal that was 12 weeks old. He never had any health problems and had as much energy as a normal kitten, even when he was 14. It was just crazy to me that he never had any health problems. He passed away one night and that was it.

I’m in the UK. We have a 9yo cat, rescued as a kitten (8 months). Totally agree with point one: GET INSURANCE! Luckily we did and at around 5yo he was diagnosed with a heart murmur. It costs a lot and (predictably) our premiums went up as a result but the insurance pays 80% of our costs. If we didn’t have insurance we would have still looked after him; he’s our little boy, but we are thankful for it every time he goes to the vet. 😻
Like Jackson, I don’t want to discourage anyone from adopting; it’s a beautiful feeling knowing you have helped an animal in need, but be realistic about your finances and be prepared.
