Mahindra Pik Up Automatic: Is it worth it?

  • Earlier this year, Mahindra introduced a new 6-speed speed automatic transmission to its Pik Up bakkie range. According to Mahindra SA chief executive Rajesh Gupta, the move was prompted by “overwhelming demand for an automatic transmission” and the Indian manufacturer will undoubtedly be hoping to build on the impressive growth it achieved in the local market in 2019.
The Pik Up S11 automatic is offered in 4x2 and 4x4 guises and should appeal to buyers looking for value and convenience in the lower end of the double-cab market. In this video, Cars.co.za journalist, Gero Lilleike, went playing in the mud with the Pik Up 4x4 automatic. Is it any good? Watch the video to find out!

Wow! I didn’t know Mahindra made Scorpio based pickup for International market. Personally, I was never really a fan of Scorpio which is the SUV version of this pickup but it’s the most popular economic choice in India for people looking to buy a rugged SUV. In fact, Scorpio in India is unpopular for goons’ or politicians’ ride who nobody would like to mess with. You see a Scorpio in your rear view mirror and the next thing you do is to given them a clean pass. They don’t care about all the damage to the car because it’s part are cheap and available on every road side garages. Eh! Never really liked this car/SUV. Never really liked the brand as well even though they are making some better and reliable products after acquiring Ssangyong. Basically, all their reliable products are just rebadged Ssangyong model. XUV-300 is a rebadged Ssangyong Tivoli and Alturas is a rebadged Ssangyong Rexton. There’s nothing about Mahindra in those two models.

Hate to say it, but this does look like the cheapest pickup you can buy. Mahindra, I realize is no General Motors, but if they expect to be taken seriously they need to get a sense for determining the difference between cheap and inexpensive. Given a choice, customers for ANY consumer good chose inexpensive over cheap by a vast margin.
