- Dragon Ball Dissection December concludes with a double look at Trunks's hellish past, which is also the future. Toriyama had his go in the manga, and six months later Toei adapted it into the TV series. What's the difference? And which is better?

My personal favorite part of the special is when Trunks slams his fists down right after becoming a Super Saiyan. It’s like he’s frustrated at how, after working so hard to become a Super Saiyan, he could only reach it by losing his best friend and mentor. It feels really dramatic and encapsulates the entire flood of emotions in Trunks’ head.
THIS. It's probably one of the best ironic fates twist I've ever seen on TV. Such a strong emotional moment, for both the audience (that likes Gohan and grew up with him) and are seen the origin of a fan favorite, Future Trunks.
The Trunks Special does what I feel the franchise hasn't been able to do since the end of the Cell arc, which is build up and doing tension correctly. It wasn't afraid to allow the protagonists to fail, to feel bad, to feel stuck at where they were, to be humiliated, to be afraid, to be self-righteous but realistically get crushed by the bravodo not being enough to change the gap. There was no crutches like those annoying rage-boosts, and in old DB the transformations were not this all powerful, invincibility mode, and the characters acted much more appropriately to threats than they do now. It just feels much more like a real story of struggle that you do not get at all in Super where the writing seems to deny actual character development through ongoing struggle.
It's like when Goku first transforms into Super Saiyan that's the original concept, of losing someone dear to you and let that anger fuel your transformation.
That's why the first Super Saiyan is the best Super Saiyan.

One of the best series in RUclips.
The thing that disappoints me the most is that you have a story that's absolutely well-crafted here, with Trunks' loss, how that affects him, what he does to deal with that loss, and how he ultimately comes back and deals with the Androids. It's a pretty tight story that ends on the hopeful note that maybe Trunks can one day help the future get fixed. And then Zeno just deletes the timeline, because fuck you.
Trunks was made just to suffer apparently.
Honestly another reason why I don't consider DBS as anything but a what if series that doesn't effect the story of Dragonball.
@@dekaritheprofessor2631 finally.. I find someone that agree with that.. The Zamasu arc and it's ending is one of the worst Dragon Ball related stuff I have the displeasure of watching/reading.
The only Way of Fixing the Zamasu arc is:
Everyone is Dead and went to the Afterlife
Zeno deletes only the Living World
give Trunks a way to travel there!

I loved the Trunks TV special, they truly improved on the manga counterpart in almost every conceivable way. They took a rushed manga chapter and expanded on it- giving Future Gohan a fleshed out character and Trunks a sympathetic backstory. You truly get to see Trunks' journey, which gives him a much more dynamic personality. And the animation in this special was glorious, especially in the rain Trunks Super Saiyan transformation scene.
But also, all the other scenes, the broken glass, the sunset, etc. I actually disagree regarding it being an improvement about not showing the Gohan final fight, I feel that conveying his desperation fighting two opponents at once in the rainstorm was an amazing moment.

Here’s something I’d like to say about the Trunks Arc in Super, I know we’re long ways from that but I find it a missed opportunity that Future Trunks doesn’t interact with Goten, I would of liked to of seen Future Trunks lament that he never had a friend his age growing up along with Goten disappointed that he doesn’t exist in Trunks’s Timeline
That is a excellent idea. Dragon Ball Super though is a disappointing series with tons of missed opportunities.

My favorite video of yours my friend! The HOT story is arguably the greatest db story to date in my opinion. However I strongly feel that the script for Trunks story was mutual.Toriyama summarized what he and Toei agreed upon and they then expanded it. Aozi Kaze No Hope for the win!

Personally, I liked Gohan's character, they captured him pretty well how he would react to such a hellish future. Why would Gohan turn out the same as in the "main timeline"?
He doesn't complain about it. He just states there different.
He never questioned that bud.
I will say, Future Gohan is much better handled as his own character than the main Gohan was.
The time travel element adds a rather amusing element to the power level discussion. See, everyone is constantly improving, so that means that Trunks is actually a mid-tier fighter in his timeline. However, he goes back in time and appears to be a God simply because he's facing off against opponents from the past. If Yamcha from dragon ball Super were to hop in a time machine, he'd appear God-like to anyone in the Freiza storylines or before. That seems absurd, and this special seems to be the only time DB ever seems to comment on this.
Because it is absurd, Yamcha and any other human has no business being that strong in Super, humans have limits but the series needs an excuse to serve the narrative and so I'm sure Lance would excuse it because narrative is more important than power scaling. Unfortunately, while I agree, a bad power system can really ruin your narrative
@@pascalsimioli6777 Isn't that just serving the author his own medicine? He already badly designed everything so that everyone but a few fleeting "prodigies" are the only thing that ever matters. Even then, how often do the "other prodigies" ever matter afterwards (Piccolo, Buu)? Whooptiedo that the humans grew so much in power so quickly, so did everyone else at the drop of a hat. The power system was already a mess with terrible ramifications, Super only applied all the problems to everyone else without getting rid of the prior consequences (the dominance of Goku and Vegeta, even above anyone with Golden Hair).

The power system was already ruined by the time the Ginyu's arrived and the power system ruined the narrative by making most of DBZ a tennis game where only the strongest guy matters at any given moment. When your setting is broken, you change it.

I just got to the Roshi part. Of course, Super makes us retroactively question why Roshi wasn't training to take the Androids out himself. The Roshi of the future had more time to train than the Roshi in Super and if Super is any indication, Roshi could likely solo one of the Androids with Mafuba while Trunks kept the other one busy. Gotta love retcons!
Belart Wright Occult Gaming In all honesty, none of it makes sense because you would think that Gohan would be strong enough to easily beat them after like 20 years of training.
The worst part is that it was stated that the present timeline androids are stronger than the future ones, which makes it more confusing as to how Gohan, the guy with all this potential, isn’t able to take them down after 20 years.
But hey, it’s a good story so it’s not that big of a deal if you ask me.

For instance, we now know that the Androids are mostly biological and that they can get massively stronger with training. In #17's case, with some sort of non-disruptive earthbound training method he was able to get to levels those in Z could only dream of, as the meme goes, by ranging parks. So why is future #17 still considered weak after constantly fighting with Super Saiyans and terrorizing humans on what appears to be a constant basis? And yeah, low tier Gohan is weird too. But I guess its because he has no one to help him bring his potential out since Goku didn't get the chance to figure out the next evolution to Super Saiyan. Gohan is a power level prodigy, but not a martial artist or fighting genius so it makes sense why he never figured out anything past Super Saiyan, though yeah, he'd likely be stronger especially if we include Super lore.
the artificial humans have no ki, how would he find them? would the mafuba even work if they have no discernable ki to sense?
@@jonmahashintina The same way Gohan and Trunks find them, waiting until they cause destruction then using the radio. Likely, they would eventually find him since they seem so hellbent on wiping out civilization so it''d be more of a self defense measure.

This is the perfect way to cap off 2018. This t.v. special is so well made. The dub pissed me off this needs a redub. The animation is spectacular. This and the Bardock special are unique in how there is no happy ending. These t.v. specials are far better than any of the Z movies indubitly. Toei did this justice. Though Trunk's timeline still doesn't make sense to me. I can't wait for Dragon Ball dissection 2019 to kick off. I've been here since the Cell arc part 8 like a lot of others. I'm glad I stumbled into this series.

I thought Trunks Special English dub was good.
As deeply flawed as the dub for the Trunks special is, it did at least get one key moment right, which is the scene in which #17 and #18 are explaining why they kill people to Trunks. It’s a shame the rest of the dub couldn’t be like that, but it at least puts it above the dub of the Bardock special.
@@dragonbleid5690 All of it. It has been nigh on two decades. Yet Baba hasn't brought any of the dead dragon team members back for a day. They could use the Namekian dragon balls. Kaio could just tell them where new Namek is. He was the one who told them where the original one was. Despite it being out of his jurisdiction. Blooma and Dr. Brief could build a new spaceship in that time span. Blooma does make a freaking time machine after all. It also makes no sense that in all that time Gohan doesn't ever surpass the artificial humans. It has been almost twenty years! What has been doing? In the main timeline he trained for only a year with Goku and far surpasses perfect Cell. That is why this timeline doesn't make any sense.

Thanks for another year of DBD December, Mistare! This end of an year has been so chaotic for me now that I've started my internship at the hospital, but being able to expect a weekly DBD has really given me some to look forward to every week, as dumb as this might sound.

Future Gohan is my favorite Gohan. I love the interesting dialouge he has with some of the present timeline characters. For example when he defeats Kid Trunks he says "Live in happiness Trunks". Or how happy he is when he sees Piccolo again.
Speaking of interesting Game Dialouge i love it when Kid and Adult Goku Interact with each other in BT 3! And Also (Mid) Goku and Future Gohan: What is it Gohan? You Look Sad!

Dang, me and the Trunks animated special came into the world on the same day, haha. I never knew that.
Knowing Toriyama, I can't tell if he didn't show Gohans fight for the sake of the "story" and to have an impact or because he was being lazy.
Pretty sure its the latter.
If you really know Toriyama you don't even consider the former option.
We've come from a time where absolute despair, the pain of a loss so great it could never leave your heart or mind, was necessary to achieve great power....to the point where simple training will allow you to access heights untold.
Truly, Goten becoming a Super Saiyan was the worst thing :(
He is a prodigy, not everyone needs to achieve SSJ by anger in the same way. Remember what Vegeta says about half earthlings?

Trunks' Story being bare bones is what made me look into analyzations of the manga. Around that time is when I found your series via Kanzenshuu which began on my birthday :D
Despite there being many DB Yters you're the one I've stuck with through the years due the research and heart you put in to backup your videos. Your willingness to accept corrections, actually acknowledge the series' stereotypes and listen to issues fans have has also been a breath of fresh air.

I remember as a kid, I really wanted Toei to come out with a special revolving around the former Kaio and their fight against Bibbiddi and Majin Buu. It would have been interesting to see how the Kaoshin we see in the main series handled the responsibility of suddenly become supreme leader of the universe after his mentor is absorbed. Sadly it didn't happen.

_I appreciate the specia/one-shot It actually gives us an insight on the the devastation of the future, make the Androids more of a deadly threat than they have been shown I'm the past, and give Trunks more development. Honestly I kinda have to agree that it was probably two-way who had the idea for the Trunks special first and Toriyama just added it in the manga before the Anime's release. I can't picture him, a gag Mangaka coming up with a story like this on his own._

Thank you for your amazing work over the whole year. Your DBD videos are something special to me that I always have time to sit down for. They remind me of moments I loved and why I loved them, make me re-evaluate characters and teach me stuff I didn't know about the series on the way. It's just so much fun to listen to you, you're somehow really good at pointing out just why a scene or design element works or doesn't work and you're able to draw connections everywhere, I love that.
You're putting emotions into words and that's a hard thing to do. Keep up the awesome work!!

This movie special along with the Bardock special are two of the greatest pieces of work in DBZ. I have to come back to these two every now and then when I really want to be overwhelmed with emotion. After all these years and having gotten rid of most my Dragon Ball VHS tapes I still kept those two because they hold a very special place in my heart that just brings me back to when I was still a kid and watched them for the first time.

Unpopular Opinion (among unbiased lads), but I really liked the dub.
ESPECIALLY THE DREAM THEATER TRACKS.
And Prelude-Slaughter's usage over Gohan's death scene was S++ in my book.
Dream Theater has awesome music in general, so yeah lol. But the Japanese score is awesome too, and arguably more thematically appropriate. Yet Dream Theater somehow works really well with DBZ lol.
Oh good. I'm not the only one totally weirded out by Bruce Timm's obsession with making Batgirl and Batman bone.

You don't have the biggest channel, but you should. I sing the praises of DBD to every Dragon Ball fan I know. It's been satisfying to watch your subscribers go up as the years have gone by. My fiance is a massive dub fan girl, but I'm slowly winning her over. I discovered Dragon Ball Dissection back in January of 2015 and have probably watched these more then a dozen times over since. The closer it gets to december, the more excited I get for that DBD goodness. I know getting these done in time to release one every week for five weeks straight, with no dip in quality of the presentation or the breadth of information to digest, must really take it out of you. Thank you for that, it's nice to have something I'm truly interested in to distract from the stress of the season. Enjoy a well deserved break and have a happy new year!

About the special i loooooooooooooooooove the scene of everybody dying, as a kid that fucked my mind xD seeing that even Yajirobe tried and was murdered broke my heart... i love the music too, gets perfect with each move... i simply love it.

Really cool video! I'm a huge DBZ fan, but I really appreciate how you come at the story from all these different angles! It's awesome seeing more than just "what happened", but also the fact you take the time to piece together the context behind certain story decisions!
I mean, hell; I didn't used to like Yamcha, but your episode on him and Trunks (who probably *is* my favorite character) really changed my opinion of him, and made me question how things could've played out if they hadn't completely wasted him as a character.
On that note, I have a question; while it's definitely too late to suddenly make Bulma and Yamcha "work out", do you think there's anything that could be done to improve the storytelling there? For example, if they retconned it to having Bulma break up with Yamcha because she felt he was too needy (something that could easily be done via a new dub in the anime)? Or even that he stopped pushing himself, and Bulma wanted someone with more ambition (leading her to Vegeta)?
On that note, even as much as I dig Trunks, I've still never quite been sold on Vegeta and Bulma as a couple. It was necessary to make Trunks happen, I suppose, but part of me feels like that would have been better off as a "what-if" scenario exclusive to Future Trunks' timeline (ie. Yamcha gets killed early, Vegeta lives long enough to get together with Bulma in the his timeline, but none of that happens in ours).
One of my favorite videos by far. Trunks the Story is my least favorite chapter in the original 42 volumes of the manga so seeing you tear it down is all kinds of satisfying.
I’m surprised that you didn’t mention that Gohan could have split the Senzu in half and healed his arm and healed Trunks. Goku is shown splitting the Senzu twice in the series and it works just as well.
But regardless, a great year for DBD and I hope you have a happy new year.

10:54- The red irises make this creepy- in fact, all of the androids would be even creepier if they were icy blue until the moment that they're administering the killing blow, in which point their irises became red. It would really highlight the nightmare fuel.

had History of Trunks on VHS as a kid and watched it so many times. That lead to Trunks and Gohan being my favourite of the main cast

Awesome timing with TFS release wraping up Trunks story. For me the Trunks TV special is one of my favorite DB related materials EVER, his transformation scene is my second favorite transformation in the series and my third favorite scene in the whole franchise
