    Y'know, I was ready to disagree with you on Cell, but... Actually, he IS pretty bland in the original story. He's got some hilarious lines in the games since (he's hands-down the funniest character in both Xenoverse and FighterZ), but I think these days when people remember Cell they're retroactively applying his wit from those games and the TeamFourStar portrayal to canon when it's not really there.

    • @Trunks1stApprentice

      People also tend to look at what Cell represents, what he causes for the characters, and hold him up based off of that.
      Cell was created by the Red Ribbon Army, a villainous group from Goku's past. He was constructed from the cells of both heroes and villains from the past, possessing their techniques. In particular, Piccolo and Freeza are the biggest influence on his biology, while Vegeta and Piccolo are the biggest influences on his personality.
      Goku is forced to bond with Gohan through training. Piccolo has to close the gap between him and God. The death of Trunks causes Vegeta to begin going down a more compassionate path. And ultimately, it takes Gohan ascending beyond Super Saiyan, Goku sacrificing himself with no intention of return, and Vegeta actively contributing to saving the very planet he tried to destroy to win the day.
      People get caught up in all of those thematic and somewhat retroactively applied details without actually looking at Cell objectively. As in, because of all of those details they get caught up in, he's not really his own character. Just a bunch of other characters blended together on the frappé setting to make an obstacle for the heroes to overcome.

    Some folks treat Cell’s forms as separate characters, but I always saw it as just him getting closer to the complete him he wanted to be, more comfortable with himself, for lack of a better description.
    On that note, I, like a lot of people, used to dislike Cell’s sudden “I’m gonna destroy everything if you lose” shift, especially since I’m sure our protags would show up to fight him regardless, but over the years I’ve brushed it off as “meh. He’s got Frieza’s DNA, of course he’s unreasonably evil”. And his moments of smug superiority and charm, however few they may be, are enough to make him entertaining to me...I think. It’s been a while. THAT SAID, I think I would’ve greatly preferred it if his goals went in a more unique direction, but we get what we get. And Toriyama’s gotta have dat villain bc this arc has taken forever to settle on one
    Also I always liked how easygoing Goku was during this part, making the characters and audience wonder what he’s thinking; after hearing Cell is stronger than him, has he given up and just wants to enjoy the days he has left? Has he gone insane? Does he have some trick up his sleeve?
    Obviously we know now, but I have comments to save for later. Until next time, keep up the good work! ^^

    My problem with the "bulky muscles = speed decrease" issue is in regards to Freeza. His final form starts off very sleek and lean, but once he goes full power, he bulks up to ridiculous levels similar to how Trunks and Vegeta do here. However, he suffers no speed drop. If anything, he's faster than he was before. His issue isn't with speed, it's with stamina, as he can't last very long in a fight. While I do like the idea Goku presents in this arc about the detriment of being too bulky, I feel that Freeza makes that whole point null and void.

    About Vegeta having the extra bulked out form but not using it, didn't he get bigger while charging up his final flash? Maybe not anywhere near as big as Trunks, but maybe enough to still suggest he was aware of the transformation and just hadn't practiced it enough to go all the way. Even if not, couldn't it still stand that even if Trunks really did discover it first, Vegeta still took notice, scoffed at how useless it was and so never bothered training to do it himself.
    As for excessively big muscles suddenly being a bad thing, maybe it's just me but that seemed to fit with past examples. When it comes to Piccolo's giant form or the Saiyan ape form, they don't just bulk out, they massively increase their height too and so retain evenly distributed body features. By contrast the only other examples of bulking out like what Trunks did have been Roshi and Frieza. Roshi only ever used the form when charging an attack but not for fighting, while Frieza loses his fight to a less bulked out Goku albeit the explanation then being stamina drain.

      I mean, Zarbon got bigger when he transformed too, and his speed increased instead of decreasing. The issue is there doesn't seem to be any definitive threshold for when muscle or body mass has increased so much that any given person is necessarily slower. Without any real way to identify or measure such a condition, the issue as it's put forth in the Cell Arc feels arbitrary and random, and we're kinda left to guess at why some characters get slower while others don't, in order to make sense of that lack of clarity.

    When it comes to characters getting giant and keeping their speed I always thought that was different to getting SWOLE and their speed lowering. Because as Giants they're basically just evenly scaling their bodies up, their proportions are still as they should be. But the Muscles in the smaller form where they aren't scaling evenly...probably are weighing more or are stiffer so they can't match speed.
    And the matter of "What's the difference between Cell and Saiyan-Frieza Saga with huge muscles" artwise, that to me is a matter of that was the kind of art in battle manga during those years like JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (part 3) or Hokuto no Ken (which ended in '88) and it makes sense. And in that same vein Cell Saga happened when YuYu Hakusho was coming out and JJBA's art style starting to get slimmer. So being CHUNK was sorta silly. Toriyama despite being old fashioned and set to a specific style still sorta tried to line up with his contemporaries. I MIGHT BE WRONG THOUGH, THAT'S JUST MY THEORY.
    Appreciate the Jiren slam. Fun Fact: Apparently Jiren was supposed to be a super over the top even more JUSTICE minded good boy than Toppo, just straight up a fucking Superman parody...but then Toriyama told Toei and Toyotaro he should be a stoic lonewolf badass with a traumatic past cause he thought it'd be cool. Though I suppose the argument is whether he expresses them with as much interest as the characters he's based upon and if he brings enough unique good character to the table. I always thought the 'Saiyan DNA' battle instinct is what motivated Cell to propose a Tournament (as much as I know Lance isn't thrilled with Saiyans suddenly having a greater desire to fight as mentioned in his Freeza Part 3 video).

    Thank you!!!! I missed ya so much, Lance!!! A new DBD episode is just what I needed in the middle of all my school work.
    Anyway, as for some of the things in the video, I also always wondered why big muscles are now a bad thing, but I feel like the most rational explanation would be that, even tho the characters have been taking more and more steroids as time went on, the manga makes it very clear that SSJ grade 3 is far beyond the most jacked they’ve ever gotten, so to me it makes sense that such an extreme would cause them to lose speed.
    Cell to me never struck me as a very interesting antagonist, and the fact that he had no motivation for being evil after achieving his perfect form is probably the biggest reason behind that. If the plan to get revenge of Goku had continued then this issue might’ve been resolved, but overall Cell needed a better long term goal for him to logically remain as the villain of the arc.
    One difference of this “perfect SSJ” that quite honestly goes for everyone after this point, is the shape of the hair. Before this SSJ hair was drawn with really sharp, triangular shapes with little to no lines indicating the rest of the hair strands, with some exemptions mind you. Here however we see Toriyama progressively add more detail and rounder shapes to SSJ hair, before it became extreme in the Boo arc. Which is surprising, since he’s famous for always going for the easier route. I do like the old hair better, but it’s a nice evolution nonetheless.
    That’s all I have to say. Looking forward to the next one!

  • @animefan77
    @animefan77 5 лет назад +3

    8:44- I think a point is greatly missed when discussing Cell once he achieves perfection. Cell himself describes himself as not in it for being a conqueror out to achieve immortality, out of boredom with nothing else better with the added bonus of getting immortality like Vegeta or destroying for the sake of it like Demon King Piccolo. He's the villain that actually achieved his goal and now has to decide then what- sure the faces distorted in despair pleases him- but that's not his end goal. He wants to test the power he's spent the entire arc to acquire in order to see if his purpose as the perfect warrior was justified. It's a defined character that subtly becomes more prominent with each Android absorption until it's the thing that embodies his character. He's the narcissistic showman wanting to prove his strength and power- not......well, depends on which kind of Buu is at any point of the arc as the latter changes personality and attributes to absurd degrees.

    I do like how Goku thinks of a way to better utilize Super Sayain. Instead of just powering up for the sake of power. That would be far better had it not been forgotten later on in this very arc. As then we get a new Super Sayain form anyway. Which apparently was the right way to overcome Super Sayain. In the case of Cell he had a relatable goal to improve himself. Albeit not in a way we would obviously. Now he doesn't know what to do so he dicks around for 9 days. Then would destroy the planet even though it defeats the purpose of him testing his strength. Since he would do that what is stopping him from doing at this point? I also do find it ironic and funny that this arc ties very little tp the RR arc. Even though the premise of this arc is the revenge of it's mad scientist. Who even he himself doesn't do much before being killed. Hell not even Goku the one it is directed at does really anything in this arc. He is even less active in this arc than he was in the Freeza arc. That is really saying something. You would think the main character would have something to do throughout the arc. Instead of only at the end of the arc. Two arcs in a roll.

    • @EmeralBookwise
      @EmeralBookwise 5 лет назад +2

      I'd say the lesson wasn't really forgotten until the Majin arc. The form commonly known as Super Saiyan 2 now was originally more so just Gohan at full power, the rage boost he's always gotten since way back against Raditz combined with Super Saiyan. It wasn't really until the next arc that it truly became its own distinct form so that Goku and Vegeta could also have it.

    • @spartanq7781
      @spartanq7781 5 лет назад +5

      @@EmeralBookwise Yea I didn't like how it is just a another Super Sayain form later on. It is litterly explained as a such just to shoehorn Super Sayain 3. A form that accomplishes absolutely nothing. I would prefer it if Super Sayain had one form that gets powered up. In a similar fashion to how they would become stronger in their base form. It would make it far more believable that the non Sayains can keep up. Instead of being soldy outclassed with no chance. It is a grievous misuse of those characters.

    The "big muscles bad" thing wasn't an issue with the Giant Namekian form or the Great Ape form because their entire bodies grew in size while Future Trunks still has the same skeletal structure. It doesn't make sense that they can grow big (conservation of mass) but that is how it works in their world.
    The thing is that Goku is the smartest fighter in the Dragon Ball series. However to do this, they made everyone else a lot dumber. This becomes even more of an issue when Goku becomes a lot dumber in DBS. The Buu arc proved that Goku knew what was a kiss and Vegeta knew that Goku knows what a kiss is.

    After listening to what you said about Cell, I find your assessment of his pulling ideas and beats from previous villains to be accurate and I agree that because of this he doesn't have much of an identity on his own. But I think this is the point and I think it works pretty well. He gets his perfect form and has all this smug arrogance just like Frieza and Vegeta, and the confidence of Goku and Piccolo when they are assured of their skills, but when he gets in over his head he freaks out just like Frieza and Vegeta. He's a melting pot of behaviors, reactions, abilities, and techniques. Think of how difficult that must be to control, even if you want to be the most calm level headed guy, you have Frieza, Cold, Vegeta, and Piccolo cells inside you affecting your behavior.
    I think its cool that he gets to the point of seeming like in inverse of Goku, like a dark reflection, but then later we see that it's merely a facade when he's in control and when he's not, his true self comes out. I also like how this sets up a dynamic of Goku vs Gohan, their philosophies. Its like right here AT was warring with himself on what direction to take DB. Cell and Goku representing the old way and Gohan representing a new take, a new style of hero who isn't a battle maniac like Goku and all the others who also compose Cells DNA. We see that eventually he chose to stick with Goku, but for a time, DB had entered into brand new territory with its new protagonist.

    • @BelartWright
      @BelartWright 5 лет назад

      The Goku vs Gohan stuff is shown in many ways. First is the fact that Goku isnt strong enough to defeat Cell. This is a clear passing of the torch moment. Then AT goes out of his way to say that Goku, through his battle maniac tendencies tends to recklessly cause more destruction, to even those he loves. Its like he's saying through this, that Goku's way won't work anymore. The end of the arc, literally comes down to this, Goku finds himself to be a dangerous influence on the planet, attracting all sorts of all-powerful ne'er-do-wells so he decides to stay dead.
      The second aspect of Goku vs. Gohan comes down to the Cell vs. Gohan fight. Cell, being a dark inverse of Goku at this point, revels in testing his skills against powerful opponents and with Goku teasing Gohan's strength, he pulls out all the stops to get his dream opponent. Just like Goku, all he cares about is the thrill of a good fight, at least that's what he presents. But Gohan just isn't like that. He represents a different philosophy. The philosophy of a pacifist, taking up arms only when they or those they love are threatened. That is the Gohan philosophy and the philosophy of what DB might have become if he continued as MC.

    Something I realized is that most of the Games, Stories that aren't related to the manga or Fan mangas tried to do something Cell's character.
    Let me explain this (if you're curious to see about it).
    - You have Xenoverse and FighterZ with Cell's funny dialogues and roasts to other characters like Nappa
    - In Dragon Ball Multiverse ummmm, maybe just the interactions Cell has with the Z warriors and other villains which are kinda interesting imo
    And... *prepare for a walltext*
    *Dragon Ball SuperSonic Warriors 1* (My favorite one honestly)
    A what-if story about Gohan not being able to transform.
    During the days before Cell games. Cell manages to meet Dr Gero.
    The Cell games happens like in the original story until the part where Cell wants Gohan to get in rage, but doesn't happen so he defeats everyone, then he realizes there's no meaning of being Perfect if there's no one to fight. So only thing he has in mind is to keep his promise and summons more Cells junior to spread the terror... He decides to sleep to wait for an worth opponent.
    Then the buu saga happens.
    Cell has a fight with Buu and he accepts Buu is stronger... but he still wins, and gets the conclusion that if there's someone stronger than him which came from Space, then he could find other great opponents. he destroys earth and explores the universe for challenge that could test the perfection of his body.
    (I don't want to mention others because most of them use this story as a reference, a base)
    About Dragon ball Abridged uhhhhhh... I didn't watch it yet tho I heard its Cell is better than the original.
