I heavily considered naming this episode "Coola 2: Electric Boogaloo," but I didn't for two reasons. I thought maybe that joke was overplayed. Also, I remembered when I named an episode "Freeza Tennis," RUclips slathered the video in tennis ads. I was afraid if I named this "Electric Boogaloo," I'd bring in a whole bunch of confused Breakin' fans! =P

Two fantastic quotes in this episode:
12:42 "It doesn't ruin the scene by a long shot, but it does frustratingly thwart perfection."
19:02 "The characters have been largely reduced to interchangeable action figures being lined up to punch each other."

The worst part about this movie is the blatant Super Saiyan wank that goes into it. Piccolo has fused with God, hence the apparent need for Dende taking his place, but Piccolo is worthlessly weak in this movie, outclassed by basic Super Saiyans. Piccolo should have been on the frontlines of this film, and this was probably his last time to really shine.

@Sun Wu-Entai 90 Fairly certain that reason this happened is because Cooler kinda started to attack Goku. Remember Goku is the only one Cooler really gives a shit about.

      @misterbadguy7325 2 года назад +3

I suspect it's because at that time, it wasn't quite clear how strong a post-fusion Piccolo was. As Mistare points out, this movie came out right in the middle of Piccolo's kinda-inconclusive fight with Imperfect Cell, which makes it hard to use to gauge his strength--hell, at the time they were storyboarding and animating the film, the fight might not even have started yet. And they assumed that Piccolo's fusion with Kami couldn't possibly boost him up that much.

If there's one thing I hate about Dragon Ball post-Frieza, it's how every villain just doesn't die because they have regeneration. In the case of Cell, I'm only really bothered by it during the Cell Games considering he specifically said that he had his nucleus in his head and could regenerate if it survived. But Goku blows up his head and then he fully self-destructs his body and the nucleus still survives?
But as annoying as that was, it's still a far-cry better than "And then Buu survived just because." seventeen times in a row.

    • @Aplesedjr

  • @ChrisPeteG
    @ChrisPeteG 3 года назад +11

I think this also falls into that realm of....the filmmakers trying to 'make something set into the future of the anime'.....like with 2-4 where they assumed 'everyone will get back to earth without anything too crazy happening'....I think this was being made under an assumption of "this androids and Cell stuff will get sorted out before too long without anything too crazy happening"
And so while movie 2-4 could put the characters back on Earth, and have the characters that were dead be alive, they could NOT predict how long they would be on Namek, Goku going full on SS, and then him staying off Earth for a period of time.
With this movie...they could say 'look, Goku and Vegeta are both SS, and we have been TOLD that Dende will take over as Guardian...so it is set just some point after this Androids and Cell stuff'....they could NOT predict how prolonged the Cell Arc would be, that Gohan would get another age-up with the Hyperbolic Time Chamber...and that Gohan would reach SS and that levels beyond SS would happen.
Just another example of the filmmakers probably TRYING to talk to Toriyama about things that would happen, trying to incorporate that into their film with the hopes that their movie could take place "soon after the current manga arc resolves" only for Toriyama to have the arc drag on and introduce even more concepts that make the movie impossible to fit.

2:49 This comes from the fact that the nerds only know the out-of-order release dates of the movies in the US and don't pay attention to when these things originally came out in Japan. Here in the US, this movie came out in 2002, long after Majin Buu had been introduced in the DBZ episodes airing on Toonami. When I actually looked up the release date of this movie and correlated it with the airdates of the TV series and the release of the Manga, I was shocked. And this explains why Gohan still has long hair and wasn't a Super Saiyan yet.

It's interesting to see another on of the Frieza's species, if only to get to learn more about them, and how even amongst "the bad guys" there can be some divide and differing views. It's just that, Coola's 15 minutes of fame have long since passed and the franchise doesn't seem interested in doing anything with him. Hell, we never even saw him properly interact with Frieza, which could've potentially been the best and most interesting part of giving Frieza a brother in the first place.

I mean, we do see him give Coola the final blow but we've also seen Vegeta saving Goku twice in this movie : at his "debut" and for the climax too ! Hell, he's even using a freaking kienzan against the giant original Coola's shape to help Goku just right before it allowed him to give his final blow to the main villain...but just like he said in the end, and it's the only time it does in a movie, without Vegeta, he would have died, because Metal Coola would have killed him and all his friends would have died too, probably killed by the robot clones army, as a matter of fact...so henceforth, Vegeta kinda' saved freakin' everybody in this god damn of a movie (sort of) !

I always thought that the Japanese title spoiled the surprise of more Coolers. Meanwhile Return of Cooler is just very plain. Watching DBZ from an outside perspective is intriguing or observing the fan base in general. Personally, I'm curious in what made Broly popular in the 1st place in the U.S. fanbase. I don't think there's any real proof of him being considered "the strongest" or "best" villain even by mundane standards. I just don't understand how he got this reputation to be treated as a fan favorite. I can see visual appeal but not so much for his actual character. It's gonna be awhile before you tackle that film & the new one but I'll patiently wait.

I think what distinguishes Broly as a movie villain is that he's not only a Saiyan, but a Super Saiyan. The Legendary Super Saiyan, at that. It brings about an interesting idea: that the legend can be interpreted two ways. Goku ascended to become a Super Saiyan through his own efforts. Broly was the destined Super Saiyan-a living legend and the pinnacle of what it means to be a prodigy. Those concepts are interesting to think about.
I think the fact that Z was the first DB material to be dubbed and become popular in America/Canada is also important to consider. Not relative to Ball, but relative to Z itself. I don't know if there's a name for it, but people usually find the middle of a series to be the most interesting enjoyment-wise because of various concepts being introduced and coming into play. Beginnings and endings are usually more narrative-weighted, or are at least seen that way generally. I think that's part of the reason why the Saiyan Arc is so overlooked: it's the start of Z, and people starting the DB series at Z aren't so invested in the universe yet. When all the Saiyan lore is introduced by the middle of the series and the series is grounded (again, from the western perspective), the story is at its peak. That means Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta aren't too appreciated as villains, while a Saiyan like Broly is. He's up-to-date with the protagonists' accomplishments when he appears, and more.
Finally, what needs to be remembered is that it's not only the English fans that love the energetic, testosterone-inducing fighting. That appeals to males universally, which is why Broly's been a fan favourite in Japan (the world, I expect) for a full decade before his movies were dubbed in English. The action in the movie was unlike any other expect Movie 7 (Super Android 13), and no one genuinely cares about that villain expect for how hard he punched Goku that one time. It was a whole new level of curbstomping with five superpowers we've grown to love by this point trying to take down this behemoth, and continuously failing and trying again until they succeeded. Despite how it turned out narratively, it's hard to deny the appeal of it as a big action setpiece.
This was a chaotic blurb but I hope it makes sense.

Considering what the hype centered around in the 90s, Broly essentially as their fanfic on the big screen. A buff, evil Super Saiyan stronger than Goku with a new color and new transformation that is better and beats up everyone for most of the movie, he had a sad childhood, he's huge now and screams a lot like how everyone else does, but he's much stronger. He is called legendary to make him sound cool and he survived and conveniently escaped planet Vegeta just before it blew up.

It's not just the states. There is a reason he's being rebooted in the new movie. He's super popular in Japan too. I know Japanese fans that dont remember Slug, Cooler, Bojack, ext. Yet you mention Broly and they get excited and find him cool.

Man, Cooler is my favorite villain design wise (particularly his final form) and while his first introduction I enjoy more (dude, that english dub has drowning pool for so much of its soundtrack...damn what a guilty pleasure) this movie holds a very special place in my heart. I remember as a kid seeing this on tv and just being pumped pretty much through my entire childhood- the music, the pacing, the tension. I sort of would have liked to see Goku and Vegeta getting demolished by a thousand meta coolers but there is merit to it ending there with them powering up and cutting to the end.
Thanks for that enlightening little tidbit about Dende; thats pretty neat that he was the god of earth long before he was even in the manga.

You keep talking about how there's no way to make these movies work in the context of the main series, but I'M ABOUT TO BLOW YOUR MIIIIND!!!
The DBZ movies from the start up to and including the first appearance of Broly are clearly all fever dreams that Goku is having while suffering from the heart virus.
EZ. It explains all the problems like where they fit into the timeline, the fact that characters have various appearances not consistent with the powers and abilities of where they should be in the timeline, the fact that the movie plots are always rehashes of characters or story elements found in the main series... It all makes sense! Also this movie specifically was the reason why Goku immediately went to grab Dende as soon as he realized Earth needed a new god: He had a dream about Dende being god, and decided that would just work.
LOL what a dumb and probably actually genius theory.

This was the first time I was able to watch anything from the anime, as this came out on Toonami the first weekend my family had access to Cartoon Network. I was aware of the series due to a couple of friends giving poor descriptions of it, and one of them getting the first Budokai game.
This movie blew my mind. I was 9 mind you, and the only Japanese animated shows I had seen up to this point, were Pokemon and Digimon. Both not exactly shows known for frenetic movement and animation quality. The fight between Goku, Vegeta and Meta Coola was unlike anything I'd ever seen, bar none.
Regardless of this movie's quality, I can't say for certain if I'd be the Dragon Ball fan I am today, if I had not seen this when I did.

Keep in mind, I've seen all the DBZ movies around the second half of the Buu arc was airing in France. After the Gogeta movie and Tapion movie which were the first ones I saw. In fact, before those I didn't even know there were DBZ movies at all.
Metal Coola was one of my favorites. I loved the designs of both the army of metal coolas looking like something out of Terminator 2 and the "real" core coola being a nightmarish mess of wires and electronic stuff put together seemingly at random to form an image that sorta looked like the original guy. I think you nailed why I love this movie too. I was a teenager and already had been a Dragon Ball fan all my life and while I adore the characters and their relationships,, most of my enjoyment came from the fighting. Especially in DBZ. Started with that first Tenkaichi Budokai with Goku VS Jackie Chun but, while DB had it's humour and a lot of adventure, it was still the fighting and stuff that I appreciated the most.
And that fight with the one metal coola was just SO cool... that is, if you know who Goku and Vegeta are.

I just always in my head rewrote the history, usually by forgetting Dende was in this movie at all, or by when watching somehow fudging the dates as thinking the manga was way ahead of where it was at the point this actually came out. So weird. My assumption is definitely 3, but it could definite 1 or 2. One day I would hope we find out.

If your third hypothesis is true, that would mean that Toriyama had already planned to make Dende the new God. And I refuse to believe that Toriyama did ever plan anything in advance, ha ha I'm pretty shure he came up with the idea of Dende beeing the new god the same day he had to draw that chapter: "So, I'm gonna make Mr. Popo the new God of earth...oh, wait. That little namekian kid's still alive. Lets make him the new god".

Ironically this movie was pretty good. Granted it had flaws but coora (as japan calls him) could of beaten them all pretty easily; if he didn't have that raging moment at the end and maybe even got his body back. One thing I always noticed is, in DBZ Ultimate Tenkaichi and never after, you fought a giant Coora; the same one that raged at the end.
Why we have never seen more of giant wired coora is a mystery as he looks pretty terrifying and just imagine if he did get his body; he'd be the size of an oozaru. Although the cloning thing did feel like it came out of nowhere; now we never know how frieza's race (calling it changlings) reproduce, but wouldn't it be amazing if the race could reproduce by cloning instead of having generic Mcguffin come out to power him up?
Just feels like they have to and did copy frieza for a movie.

It's Coola in Japan. It's just the way they pronounce it that makes it sound like "Coora," due to the nature of how 'L' and 'R' sounds work in their language. Technically, "Coora" isn't a wrong transliteration of what they say, but because the name is pun on the word "Cooler," it's very clearly intended to be "Coola."

This movie was probably supposed to be after the cell arc before it was the cell arc, which would explain why they have Dende as god (and super saiyan Vegeta - would that reveal have happened in time for the animation staff to put the movie together?). Then the delays of rewriting around cell, and possibly around 16-18 before him, slowed the manga to the point that Dende was a massive spoiler, and also meant that at the time the movie was supposed to fit in, Gohan had been through a second redesign and gained a major new form, and Goku was dead. Maybe this is from that middle timeline where Trunks went back in time, successfully stopped Gero's plan, and then got killed by Cell when he went home?
