Obviously not Canon Material, but the videogame Dragon Ball Z Tenkaichi 3 has a Mount Paozu stage that includes BOTH houses in it. The old Toei House is located on top of the mountain while the new Toriyama House is located at the foot. Because of bad memory I always assumed that in Canon Chichi and Gohan simply moved to a new house at a more accessible location.

Goku's house: "and this! is to go! EVEN FURTHER BEYOND!!!"
In all honestly, I'm very surprised they didn't use this as filler opportunity, considering they've been using everything as an opportunity for filler expansion: a Red Ribbon Army recap, the saiyan transformation triggers, development of off-screen character relationships, training, they even kept consistent on the driver's license thing! A "moving out" or "remodelling" filler scene is kind of a no-brainer. Maybe Chi-chi was tired of their house being so far removed from everything else, maybe she wanted to move closer to the city to buy groceries or facilitate Gohan's studies, or maybe Goku accidentally destroyed it, not used to his power yet. There's a lot of excuses and potential interactions for a remodelling/moving out filler episode and I'm sad that they went with SSJ3 Son House instead

I hella agree man. Theyve made filler episodes of everything possible. This would actually be a pretty cool episode if it was about them remodeling and building an addition on the house. Could be filled with goofy jokes, angry Chi-Chi's, and base form Goku. I mention base Goku because i favor episodes where he interacts with others more than fighting. But yea man this would be an awesome filler episode idea for sure💯

I think the reason the driving episode is so beloved is that it's self indulgently fun. It's not a quality filler episode adding to the lore or fleshing out ideas the manga couldn't realistically spend space going into much, if at all. Rather, it's that kind of episode you can easily go back to and watch without having any commitment to see more episodes to get a payoff. It's just a stand out stand alone enjoyable episode.
Also, for long time viewers it was nice to see a slapstick version of the long gone rivalry Goku and Piccolo had.

    • @purerage7963
      @purerage7963 2 года назад +16

    • @papawedge7396

It also helps that the characters involved aren't what DBZ anime filler usually has for comedy relief, like Oolong, Muten Roshi, or Kaioh and his pets, it makes Piccolo and Goku the butt of the joke, so it feels special because of a serious character like Piccolo being ridiculed like that, and Goku at this point in the story is so busy being the "hero guy" that he is barely allowed to be dumb and charming, so having him be the center of the comedy is also a good change of pace.

I think the car race is so loved because it screams “I’m Filler.” But was still very good and fun to watch (especially for Goku & Piccolo fans)
Vegeta’s and Bulma’s interactions were far more subtle and honestly if you didn’t read the manga you wouldn’t know that it was filler. You’d probably say it wasn’t.
So there’s two types of good filler, pure fun character interactions with slice of life stuff & filler so good that it builds up the story to the point you can’t tell it wasn’t part of the original story.

as for why, i personally like to think that just like with that one scene with chichi, goku and gohan may have accidentally wrecked the house a lot during the 3 year training, and all the renovations it went through eventually gave it the toriyama design (unless, y'know, we actually see the toei design after the 3 year skip in which case, ignore this idea).

You ignored the elephant in the room with the driver's incense thing:
    1. Toriyama drew a picture of Chi-chi driving a car with Goku and Chi-chi in wedding clothes.
    2. Chi-chi was clearly seen driving a car to Kame House in the Saiyan arc.
    3. In the Garlic Jr. saga, the Son family was shown to have an airplane in their garage
Simply, Chi-chi should already have a car AND be able to drive it, so this whole thing makes no sense. There's an inconsistency with cars as well, Japan is a right-hand-drive country where driver's seats are typically on the right side of cars, but Toriyama always draws cars as left-hand-drive. In the driver's license episode, the cars are right-hand-drive.

    • @MistareFusion
      @MistareFusion  3 года назад +45

I don't think it's appropriate or fair in most cases to count title page images as part of the story. Were that the case, Goku could drive literally anything since so many of them are Goku on vehicles, not to mention all of the other outlandish and incompatible things title pages present.
Outside of that, yes, you are correct that Chichi has been shown to be able to drive, and, as I point out later in the episode, Toriyama's version of their house has a car parked outside. That said, since we had only seen Chichi drive prior to this, I think there is a degree of fairness in her wanting Goku to learn that skill. Yes, it is a bit of an oddity that she is shown to have to walk home from grocery shopping. That the conflict is predicated on that is certainly an inconsistency. But given everything else I had (and still have to) talk about, it just didn't feel worth it to me to get deeper into it than I already was.

Toriyama came up with the "Dragon Ball Z" name. When asked why he added the "Z" he simply said "Because nothing will come after this." Intially Toei Animation was simply going to call it "Gohan's Big Adventure" or something along those lines. Heck, the work in progress images of what would become Dragon Ball Z Episode 1 still had "Gohan's Big Adventure" written on them.
Afterwards, he was still involved with the anime to some extent and even suggested ideas and things to the anime staff. So he did pay attention, that attention just simply reduced after the Freeza Saga. He even designed the characters of East King Kai and Grand Kaio. Heck, for the movies he even made a detailed art for Broly.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the scene where Vegeta goes Super Saiyan for the first time. Whereas Toriyama made it so that the transformation happened completely off-screen, in the anime, we actually get to see a flashback to when that happened. They easily could've gotten the cheap route and just make Vegeta go Super Saiyan when fighting Turles or some new lame filler villain, but instead, his transformation is quite unlike anything we've seen from other Saiyans: he doesn't transform because he gets furious at an enemy, he transforms because he gets furious at HIMSELF for his own perceived weakness and inability to keep up with Kakarotto. I've always thought this was really fantastic and profound, this really helps emphasize who Vegeta is as a character and also showcase that his crippling insecurity combined with his stern self-discipline might actually aid him instead of harming him when put to productive use. Absolutely one of my favorite anime additions

    • @MistareFusion

I always thought this was kind of punching down, because it was clear Toriyama wasn't going to bring Roshi back into relevancy any time soon at that point, so anime rubbing it in everyone's face feels somewhat sad.

Perhaps it's my own fault for saying "Capsule-style house" or whatever I said here rather than simply "dome-shaped" because, while I was only describing the shape, the former implies some form of Capsule functionality. There is no reason to assume any of these can revert to Capsules, no evidence at all. As such, while it's certainly possible within the world, asserting so would not be using demonstrable knowledge but pure speculation. We see rounded architecture all over the Dragon World in buildings we never see reduced to particles (including the Capsule Corporation headquarters itself), while we see houses not at all in that architectural style that do have Capsule functionality. I honestly thought I would have to wait until you finished the manga version of the Buu arc. Seeing switch here, made me excited! So, thank you for this and all future videos of this arc and later Buu arc videos.

Getting with Vegeta is the best thing that happened to Bulma (at least as a concept). Personally, I couldn't stand her bitching and being mean to people who 9/10 times didn't deserve it. Vegeta, even at his tamest, is still an ass who deserves a bit of yelling and forces Bulma into the role of a grown-up. And it's done without making Vegeta look bad either.
I would go as far as say that Bulma is the only character in Dragon Ball Super that I consider an unquestionable improvement over the original series. She's useful and intelligent but still entitled and bossy enough to be flawed and entertaining.

Now that I think about it I'm surprised you didn't mention it at the last DBD TV, but another thing I really enjoyed about the anime is that they added the touch of Piccolo ordering Vegeta to stop when attacking Gohan. While I'm not entirely sure it was intentional, the change not only made Piccolo's power-up feel less wasted as he was the person virtually in charge of protecting the Earth, but also made Vegeta not conquering the planet make more sense.

Even if it makes no sense, the first nightmare with goku and 17/18 is horrifying and chilling enough that it makes up for the logic. I mean they come in, kill chi chi and gohan, and iirc trunks as well, while goku isn’t even able to do anything to stop them, even as his family is being killed in front of him. And then they hover over him, ready to kill him, and we’ll…I don’t think I need to explain why the concept of seeing someone about to kill you but having physically no way to stop it is horrifying. So yeah the emotions of the scene make up for the logic.

wonder if the thing of this "driver license episode" be considered "best filler ever" have some influence of what people consider filler...
back then, I didn't have idea about the need of those episodes to buy some time, so the mangá, could release more chapters, and they have more content to adapt...
so, first time I heard the word "filler" in the anime context, I thought was specifically about those episodes where the characters engage in activits that have absolutely nothing to do with the main plot (like a side quest in video-games)...
maybe the fillers with Vegeta are so well integrate with the story, and the development of his future relationship with Bulma, that some people didn't even seen as fillers initially
just thought, because I didn't, XD ... only after I knew how fillers really works, I start to notice some things I didn't know were fillers, actually were

Actually, that's probably why Toriyama initially did it (or because it's easier to draw), but yeah, there's a lot of miscommunication.

I actually like that idea of yours! Chi-Chi taking her boys to a cooking class probably Would have been a great filler ep! And what's more, Chi-Chi dragging Goku & Gohan with her would probably be funny there! Perhaps Chi-Chi's gripe on why she's dragging them to learn to cook should be: "We never spend time as a family and I'm getting sick of making meals for you!" I think at first, disasters would be abound but in the end, Goku & Gohan pass with flying colors and make a great meal yet things are pyrrhic as Chi-Chi is left to do all the dishes while Goku & Gohan sneak off to train! (Maybe Gohan uses his homework hastle as an excuse to get out of cleaning up!)

The original manga is divided into 42 vol. It took me around an hour to read each vol. So reading the manga took me only approx 43 hrs ....Just so you now.
Or you could watch all 60 eps of DBZ Abridged which would take you only about 12 hrs.

After getting a bit burned by the length of the Frieza fight, and my mother complaining about the violence in the cartoons I was watching during the mornings. (despite the fact that my mother also watched the news every morning that also included the 9/11 attacks that happened in 2001 a year later after she yelled at me during the Frieza arc I was trying to watch)
It was the Goku and Piccolo driving episode that got me back into watching Dragon Ball Z again after a short boycott my mother forced me into.
I was a teenager at the time, and my mother didn't want me to be a violent person, but thankfully I saw through the BS that the news media was trying to feed into her and rebelled by watching the anime on morning TV I wanted to watch again.
Thus the Goku and Piccolo driving episode restored my interest into the Dragon Ball series and perfect timing for the Android and Cell arcs.

A lot of the filler in the Cell arc is why I say the filler in Z was honestly good. The Vegeta and Bulma filler really does a good job convincing you that both people could fall for the other. Where as the manga really just seems like they get together for shits and giggles. Also Vegeta's turmoil is something I actually liked about his character. I never really likde Vegeta, I hated him more as the series went on but I truly think this part of his character was so interesting. Vegeta is literally number 3 in terms of the saiyans. He's leagues stronger than anyone he knew in his race and is somewhat comparable to Freeza. Yet he still feels so inferior because he can't seem to get this one transformation. His continuous struggle to get super saiyan but to no avail really feels relatable in ways. Then seeing that he got Super saiyan as he just let everything go and him achieving the form only happened when he became tired of having to live with the weight of trying to be number 1. It's one of the only times Vegeta actually captivated me and I wasn't like "I hope Goku slaps him out of this scene." Then he kinda fell off after that point but you know for a time I actually enjoyed Vegeta.
